A treadmill workout session is a great way to complete your exercise training when the weather is atrocious. Running outside along trails and local streets is always more interesting than pounding the treadmill down at the local gym, but if it is icy or wet, or you want to do a multi sport workout, a treadmill session is ideal. The best way to make the most of your treadmill workout session is to plan it in advance and have a clear idea of what you are trying to achieve. Plenty of people happily spend thirty minutes jogging at an easy pace while watching MTV on the gym television, but if you have more serious training aspirations, this time would be better spent following a more defined treadmill training session. Before you begin a treadmill workout, make sure you have everything you will need within easy reach. Treadmill training sessions are likely to make you sweat more due to the increased humidity levels in a gym environment, so a handy bottle of water or sports drink is essential. A towel is also useful for wiping the sweat from your face. In order to replicate the wind resistance that you experience when you run outdoors, you need to set the treadmill to an incline of 1 or 2. It is also helpful to work out your normal training speeds in advance, unless you are planning on training to perceived effort. Just remember, running on a treadmill usually feels harder because your core body temperature heats up faster when you are indoors. A treadmill workout session should be no different to any other workout in format. You need to incorporate a warm up and cool down, just like you would outdoors. Ideally, allow around ten minutes at an easy pace before you increase the speed. You might even prefer to walk at a brisk pace for a short time before you begin running. Once your legs have warmed up, you can begin your planned session. Treadmills are ideal for speed sessions as you can set the treadmill to an exact speed and run for the designated time. The machine takes the guesswork out of the session and you know exactly how long, or how far, you need to run. You might discover that running at speed feels considerably harder than it would outside, but this is normal. Outside your pace naturally slows down at intervals, whereas on a treadmill, you are forced to stick to the same pace whether you like it or not. Another useful session on a treadmill is a hill session. By increasing the incline at increments, you can enjoy an intense workout. You can choose to run hill intervals and recover by reducing the incline between intervals, or you can do a pyramid session by steadily increasing the incline over half or one minute intervals, until you reach the maximum incline you can manage. At this point, you begin reducing the incline in the same fashion, until you have brought it back to 1 or 2 again.


This is quite a challenging workout, so it should only be completed once a week. However you wish to tackle a treadmill workout session, just make sure you position yourself in front of a television that is showing something interesting.
