Designing and Manufacturing World-Class Respiratory Protection industry. Ivan’s son Per substantiated the organisation’s worth by responding to the increased demand with the conceptualisation of further products. His expertise within the field of peranatomy of the human body made it possible to create a contemporary protective mask based on an anatomic design using rubber.

Sundström Safety was founded back in 1926 by a forwardthinking mining engineer who identified a gap in the market for respiratory protection products. The innovating Ivan Sundström Sr. recognised that breathing difficulty - experienced whilst working in mines contaminated by unhealthy air - was a major issue that needed to be addressed and set to developing an effective solution. The result was the world’s first ergonomic face mask, designed to protect the eyes and lungs of those working within the mining

In this day and age, the company is pleased to offer an extensive range of solutions in the form of half/full face masks, accessories, filters, fan units, face pieces, accessories, filters, compressed air filters, compressed air fed respiratory devices and escape hoods. “We supply every kind of respiratory protection other than self-contained breathing apparatus,” explained Tony Smith, Sales Manager UK & Ireland of Sundström Safety Services Ltd. “Our work revolves around coming up with different ways to offer the best level of comfort we can. We look at making the best

protection possible, considering important aspects appreciated by the end user such as wearability, robustness and quality – providing products that both the operator and employer would want to use.” The range is suitable for a whole crosssection of clients working within various sectors. Although predominantly used within asbestos applications and heavy industries, Sundström has proven a brand most popular with relevance in pretty much every environment (from pharmaceutical and steel to engineering). The Swedish company, which employs a total of 100 team members, will be celebrating its 90th anniversary this year and is pleased to have remained true to the ongoing Sundström philosophy of quality modes of protection and consistent product development. “Having been employed at Arco (our major UK distributor) prior to Sundström, I have noticed a few changes since I began working here three years ago,” Tony concluded. “One major difference is that the company has become far more operationally efficient and streamlined, proactively developing innovative products that no one else offers. As well as my role in sales I spend my time training people on how to use the equipment whilst making sure they are kept fully informed about the legislative requirements involved and the implications of not using the apparatus. “Going forward we want to become better known in the

UK by increasing our market share and offering the best level of comfort and protection we possibly can to the British industry. We want to reiterate that we are here to help people: there are so many health & safety legislations around but as specialists we have the knowledge that will assist workers greatly in terms of protection during laborious activity. As a very ethical company our main aim is to ensure that individuals can breathe easily and that there are no issues with their lungs.”

The original York Railway Station was built within the City Walls, adjacent to where the current station now stands. Opened in 1839 by the North Midland Railway, the structure only served trains to and from the south and the northern coalfields. However by 1873, as more passenger and goods lines were built into York, a larger station, from which trains could gain access from all directions, was needed. Opening in 1877, the New York Station took three years to rebuild. Designed by the North Eastern Railway’s architect Thomas Prosser, the

Today, the structure still impresses. Serving the busy East Coast mainline route, primarily between Glasgow Aberdeen, Edinburgh and London it is also a vital cross-route link between Glasgow, Manchester and Liverpool. The station currently copes with around 800 trains and thousands of passengers each week. With so many passengers using the station, the extended platforms, which project out from the original arched structure, are as busy as ever. The platform surfaces have been designed to gently slope inward away from the track so any surface water naturally drains towards their centre. Effective drainage of these roofed and un-roofed ‘outer’ areas was a major safety consideration.

company’s tough recycled PolyethylenePolypropylene (PE-PP), all fitted with Class C 250 ductile iron ‘heel-safe’ gratings finished in a Black anti-oxidisation coating. As each one metre unit only weighs just over 6kg, including the grating, contractor C. Spencer Limited was impressed with the ease and speed of installing the channels as all the units used easily complied with manual lifting regulations. Suprion scale inhibitors Hard water as a result of dissolved mineral salts naturally occurring in the majority of water supplies may result in short term potentially expensive and inconvenient, essential maintenance or premature equipment replacement as a result of accumulated scale deposits, or a potential health hazard by providing the areas and nutrients where bacteria can colonise and some form of hard water treatment now an integral part of Building Regulations. Traditional Salt based ion-exchange water softening or some of the more recent innovative media processes are the only guaranteed protection since the hardness salts are permanently removed at ‘point of treatment’. These systems however require space, capital investment, after sales service and management. There may also be logistical and/or practical issues in providing untreated bypasses for potable applications, particularly in commercial situations – albeit essential in conjunction with Laundry/Dishwashing Machines and/or steam generating/total evaporation processes. Selection from the numerous ‘conditioners’ can however be challenging and still remains contentious as a result of over enthusiastic sales claims, inappropriate applications or simply inferior technology and some are seriously expensive with microprocessors, programming, and

commissioning requirements. Systems now available will have wide ranging and varying operating parameters comprising hydro magnetic, electromagnetic, permanent magnetic, ultra-sonic, electric field, Electrostatic, Electrolytic, catalytic and so on, some have even used radio waves. All are however designed to maintain ‘mineral suspension’ and most effective when the water is constantly flowing. There are numerous and more obvious wide ranging applications where water is heated and calcium precipitation occurs, but ICE-MAKERS have proved a particularly economic, practical and effective application since the internal areas provide the environmental conditions for bacteria to accumulate if not regularly maintained, de-scaled or appropriate treatment included to the feed water supply; artificially softened water should not be used as the sodium concentration is increased and non-compliant with PCVs (prescribed concentration levels) for potable supplies. Standard carbon filters will only remove dirt, rust, sediment taste and odour and the addition of polyphosphates will apply a film to internal waterways to inhibit scale formation, albeit not guaranteed. Reverse Osmosis (RO) will certainly prove effective, but not generally practical unless available from a central plant

and food grade resin based systems can prove extremely expensive to maintain a calcium free supply, especially in respect of single feed ‘self-flushing’ machines. converts into a super-fine finishing sander, bench grinder, sharpener, partial angle grinder, polish applicator and polisher.

The Flexidisc is a system based on an exciting 5” disc sander attachment which securely fits in your drill. A highly efficient flexible shaft eliminates vibration and gives full control when presented full face to the job surface, enabling fantastic finishes.

The ‘slap-on peel-off’ Velcro type discs are coated in a super-tough material called Corundum. The re-usable discs do the work of 100 conventional discs and can cope with a wide range of materials from soft plaster to iron. Because they generate little heat, they can even sand G.R.P. and old paint without melting the material.

The fast rotation gets sanding completed in a fraction of the time compared to conventional sanders. This multi-purpose tool

Using the ‘slap-on’ system, polish is easily applied using the foam sponge, whilst a polishing cap completes the job. DA & BE Murkin are also the sole importers of Le Tonkinois Varnish, manufactured the traditional way, using Linseed oil, Tung oil & natural resins. Cost-effective Mechanical Ventilation whether domestic or commercial, can benefit from MVHR, improving climate control whilst promoting energy efficiency. An increase in new builds brings new legislation and a surge in the demand for heat recovery products as building efficiency is improved. Buildings are becoming more airtight and consequently less fresh air can circulate. Since all buildings need a source of fresh air, the need for a MVHR unit has become obvious. Diagram 1 shows how a simple mechanical ventilation with heat recovery system facilitates effective ventilation in a domestic unit.

Working alongside our customers, Axair Fans can supply quality components for domestic and commercial heat recovery systems. Many systems feature two fans as shown in diagram 2, one to take out stale air and one to bring in fresh air.

The health issues caused by Silica dust (Silicosis) are a top priority for the HSE who are looking to reduce the worrying increasing number of sufferers. Quality Model-making for Quality Developments

Here at Building and Construction Review we are pleased to announce that Bennett Gynn Modelmaking has been recognised for its ongoing commitment to Product & Service Innovation. Bennett Gynn Modelmaking was established in 2013 by company directors and business partners Jonathan Bennett and Mark Gynn, who decided to team up and establish their own enterprise after working in the industry for a number of years. Leaving college in 2002, the pair were freelancers until they developed their own modelmaking service, operational out of a studio facility based in Rochester. The Kent-based workforce has been expanded with the employment of another two modelmakers and the team are renowned for their architectural capabilities, which have been expressly utilised by developers, designers, engineers and architects. Creating pieces for sales, marketing, planning, public consultation or investment, the commercial modelmaking company prides itself on its ability to fulfil exacting specifications whilst working on schemes of varying sizes and complexities.

Mark, who studied the craft to degree level, was keen to tell us more about the advantages of teaming up with Bennett Gynn Modelmaking: “We have a wealth of industry experience and stand out because we combine traditional forms of craftsmanship with the more modern techniques,” he commented. “We offer customers knowledge of woodwork and handiwork as well as laser cutting, 3D printing, moulding and spray finishing.” Addressing claims that modelmaking is a ‘dying art’, Mark insisted that architectural models are instead an important business tool that optimise the design process by better showing the context and impact of a proposed construction project. Other uses include marketing applications where models are produced in a larger form to provide an authentic representation of the finished building. Physical models create a more visual impact and act as a point of interest whilst conveying information that is critical for prospective purchasers and building developers. Whether using a

the strategic placement of a meticulously made model will drive sales in the right direction. “Our ethic revolves around providing a quality and reliable service,” Mark concluded. “We always reach deadlines set by our customers and ensure that all individuals are happy with the project delivered. Our aim is to expand steadily and keep moving with the times, developing our customer base whilst working on projects for new developments and embracing any new technologies that will affect the market.”

Every business, regardless of its size or whereabouts, can be presented with a cost-effective and suitably tailored solution that has been meticulously developed by an experienced and highly skilled professional with a refined knowledge of technology, printing and marketing. With ARC’s support, the customer can

Our ReconEyez system can be easily installed anywhere within a matter of minutes. Wireless and battery powered, ReconEyez provides hightech, military standard monitoring for an affordable price. They can then contact a response team or local police force when there is threat. This means intruders are recognised immediately, and crime is prevented. We also offer the highest standard of CCTV, access control and lone worker options. If you require a reliable and professional construction security presence, Envision can provide you with a service that will leave your site protected, materials safe and equipment out of harm’s way. Want the look of a bespoke build for your marketing suite or community project, but need the speed, convenience and value of prefabricated buildings? Then look no further.

Developers, designers and architects have to deal with a unique circumstance; selling extremely valuable products that don’t exist at the time of purchase, deals are often made on promises. Traditionally architects and developers

Brett Martin Profile Finder Streamlines Specification Process There are hundreds of manufacturers and thousands of profiles in use and it can be a difficult task to identify what has been used, especially on older buildings where the history is not known. “The Profile Finder is a massive advance on how we identify profiles and an incredibly useful tool for Brett Martin to be giving to the roofing and cladding industry,” said Michael.

Lighting News

Launched by Brett Martin Plastic Sheets, the new Profile Finder tool available on www.brettmartin.com will make specification of roofing and cladding sheet profiles simple, easy and efficient, ensuring contractors and specifiers find the ideal and up-todate match, whatever the project.

With a global reputation for quality and reliability developed over more than 50 years in the industry, Brett Martin’s on-going investment in the latest manufacturing technology, innovation and product development ensures that its products remain at the forefront of the industry.

With no limit to the number of profiles that can be added, this profile identification tool allows roofing and cladding contractors to input dimensions of an unknown profile – whether Polycarbonate or PVC sheets – and the Profile Finder will come up with the closest match to their dimensions. It will also display drawings of these matches with full dimensions.

By understanding the challenges of producing high quality, high volume polycarbonate, PVC and GRP rooflight, glazing and cladding solutions in the widest selection of profiles available, Brett Martin’s tried and tested products can meet the exact specifications of a wide and varied range of architecturally innovative and prestige projects across the globe - from airports to stadia, shopping malls to schools, factories to residential DIY projects.

Fast and simple to use, specifiers and installers can simply access the Profile Finder via their desktop, tablet or mobile device so there is no need to make multiple phone calls to identify the correct profile. Michael Johnson, Technical Services Manager at Brett Martin said: “All of the latest profile information can be accessed on our website. By inputting a few dimensions, a list of potentially thousands of profiles can be reduced to a more manageable list of a few likely candidates which can be investigated further.”

Brett Martin’s simple-to-use new Profile Finder is further testament to Brett Martin’s ability to create solutions that meet the industry’s growing need to improve efficiency, reduce costs and speed up project timelines with mobile solutions. “The Profile Finder is a very convenient way to specify the right profile and a time saver for specifiers wanting to increase productivity,” added Michael. The Profile Finder is available via the Brett Martin website at www.brettmartin.com

there is sensitive electronic equipment such as hospitals, TV studios and pharmaceutical manufacturing plants. Sikafloor supplied a seamless, rapid-apply, non-slip surface to ensure production at a Rolls Royce car assembly plant continued without interruption. Contractor, Zircon Flooring, was chosen to refurbish 14,000m2 of industrial flooring at the vehicle production site in Chichester, West Sussex. The client required a surface with a detailed, high-quality finish. With durability and low-maintenance among its many other benefits, Sikafloor’s high-quality resin system proved ideal for the project. To overcome random static charges which can affect sensitive electrical components and wreak havoc on a busy car production line, Sika provided its Sikafloor®-262AS, a two-part electrostatically conductive textured epoxy coating for the floor’s refurbishment. With good chemical and mechanical resistance, this slip-resistant flooring system is designed to deliver the ultimate in static control and has an excellent reputation in industries where

For the Rolls Royce project, Zircon prepared the concrete substrate by mechanically shotblasting and diamond-grinding the surface using dust-controlled methods to ensure plant operations elsewhere were not affected. Sikafloor®-161 primer was then applied, followed by Sikafloor®-263 SL multipurpose binder. With work starting in December and continuing during the festive period, 7,000m2 of existing floor had to be ground-off before relaying could start, with Zircon’s teams working throughout the night to ensure the project’s completion in readiness for the New Year and the site’s return to full operation. This sophisticated solution is both more user friendly and energy efficient than straight occupancy-sensing thermostats, which still need time to catch up and heat up, on arrival. With SmartGeo™, the 4iE and 4iE +Kit know when you are on your way home, no matter what change of plan, so you never come back to a cold house. Unlike standard geo-fencing thermostats, the smart part of SmartGeo™ learns your routines so it can set lower, more efficient levels when you are away longer - even close by - and still be up to temperature, as you arrive. Compatible with all major heating systems, the technology works for zoning, too. If employing multiple 4iE +Kit thermostats, SmartGeo™ learns when certain rooms are most likely to be used and optimises temperatures accordingly, rather than simply turning up all areas wastefully at once. Inta Launches ActivFlo Range of Water Conditioners New ceiling cassette improves installation, operation and efficiency Conforming to Part L building regulations, the WRAS-approved ActivFlo catalytic water conditioner is available with 15mm to 2” connections with a classleading 15 year warranty. For commercial installations, the ActivFlo Pro is available with connections from 22mm to 10” and boasts a lifetime warranty. ActivFlo Pro also features optional building management system (BMS) connectivity for remote monitoring and integration with smart building solutions.

British heating and plumbing product manufacturer Inta has introduced its ActivFlo range of domestic and commercial water conditioners to the market. With 60% of the UK being affected by hard water, there is a significant market for reliable and effective water conditioners. ActivFlo and ActivFlo Pro provide an efficient solution to hard water issues and limescale build-up without requiring the addition of a chemical limescale inhibitor, the removal of any waste product, or regular maintenance.

ActivFlo extends the service life and improves efficiency of heating equipment, as well as preventing costly equipment failure. The addition of an ActivFlo to an existing water system will also reduce existing limescale. Using a unique alloy that changes the chemical structure of limescale-forming calcium carbonate in water, ActivFlo converts calcite, a form of calcium carbonate that causes hard water, into aragonite. These aragonite crystals do not build up or form deposits and remain suspended in the water, flowing harmlessly through the system and eventually out to the drain. Created with installers in mind, ActivFlo’s clean ‘inline’ design allows for quick and easy installation in new build and retrofit applications. Its patented fitting system incorporates a collar at either end of the device, allowing it to be removed from an in-line installation without modification of the existing pipework.

Stuart Gizzi, managing director at Inta, said: “We’re excited to be bringing the ActivFlo range to the market for the first time. It uses proven technology to remove and prevent the build-up of limescale, and helps prevent blocked pipes and damaged components, while boosting efficiency and reducing environmental impact. In hard water areas, it will also help reduce stubborn deposits on taps and showers. “With no ongoing maintenance costs, it is a desirable option for installers looking for a reliable water conditioner that is a true fit-and-forget product. We’ve designed it be clean and simple, and have matched it with premium packaging and superb aftercare support. Such is our confidence in the range, we’re offering a 15 year warranty with the domestic ActivFlo, and a lifetime warranty and money-back guarantee with the commercial ActivFlo Pro.” www.intatec.co.uk

Latest Safety Innovation Adopted at High-Profile Site in London Nationwide Platforms’ latest innovation in safety, SkyScreen™, was recently introduced on the construction of London’s iconic Greenwich Peninsula Low Carbon Energy Centre by main contractor Kier, in order to minimise the risk of objects being dropped from the basket of an access platform when working at height. Designed by renowned sculpture and artist, Conrad Shawcross, the Energy Centre’s 48 metre chimney required 137 unique panels installing to create what Shawcross described as its ‘optic cloak.’ To ensure the panels were installed both safely and efficiently, a spider crane was placed at the

top of the building’s chimney and used to hoist the panels into position. One of Nationwide Platforms’ SX-180 boom lifts, fitted with SkyScreen™, was then used to assist with the fitting and installation. Due to the nature of the job, and the need to use tools and small fixings, the introduction of SkyScreen™ successfully minimised the risk of injury or damage caused by items accidently being dropped from height. Suitable for 6ft and 8ft platform basket sizes, the lightweight SkyScreen™ mesh fully encompasses the platform basket to provide protection from dropped objects, tools and materials down to 15mm in size. As well as retaining maximum visibility, it is also compatible with a range of other innovations such as the company’s material handling attachment SkyRak® and its secondary guarding device SkySiren® PCS™. Part of BlueSky Solution’s range of safety innovations, SkyScreen™ is readily available for hire throughout the UK. Pulsar light the way for Bowman Chilled Stores Bowman Chilled Stores in Spalding is a family run business which has been established for over 50 years. Over the years Mr and Mrs Bowman had a strong influence in large scale horticulture ranging from daffodils and vegetables to cereals. Mr Bowman decided to stop production and to convert existing buildings to refrigerated storage. This included the licence to store meat, fish and dairy produce. He decided to refurbish to industry leading standards to provide excellent services to his customers. The short lifespan of the existing 100 Metal Halide fittings were costing £1.200 a year to maintain and led to reduced light levels and production stoppages when light servicing and replacement

were taking place. Pulsar’s maintenance free LED lighting upgrade eradicated all of these issues and their associated costs. After visiting the site and preparing extensive light calculations, Pulsar Light created a scheme with the UniBay130 that dramatically reduced the running cost of the chilled storage units, and significantly improving on the existing light levels. The final scheme consisted of 104 x UniBay130W fittings with 80 CRI at 5000K including G90 glare control optics. The UniBay130 has multiple fixing options; Bowman’s chose our low profile bracket (F003), enabling them to fit all UniBay fittings flush to the ceiling, allowing more space for fork lift trucks as well as creating a more even light distribution. Pulsar’s lights reduced energy consumption by 70% and delivered a saving of £29,757 per year. In addition to paying less in electric bills, the improved light level readings were measured at over 500 Lux, creating a superb working environment, as quality of light is critical in storage areas dealing with fresh produce. www.pulsarlight.com

Sika Waterproof Roof Membrane Caps Shopping Centre’s Seasonal Showpiece SGK as the solution – a rapid-apply, best-cost performance bonded membrane.

Sika-Trocal helped save Christmas by supplying the durable, easy-to-apply waterproof roof system for a spectacular seasonal attraction. With the festive season fast approaching, KD Decoratives were the supplier to The Mall retail complex in Cribbs Causeway, Bristol, which required a new roof for the fairytale focal point of its alfresco ‘Winter Wonderland’ experience – a sparkling Santa’s castle. The sky blue, portable building replete with a 20ft turret has been installed at the Mall every Christmas for a number of years, but its existing roof had started to display signs of wear and tear. For retailers, the run-up to Christmas is their most profitable time of the year. It was essential, therefore, the Mall’s Winter Wonderland crowning glory was installed and fully-waterproofed as quickly and safely as possible in order to provide an additional draw for families and children. Flat roofing specialists, Single Ply Services, from Clevedon near Bristol, in conjunction with main contractors, KD Decoratives, specified Sika-Trocal

The castle consists of six modules which were re-roofed during an off-site operation which also involved the installation of Sika-Trocal SGK membrane. The modules were then weathered together onsite at the Mall. Suitable for both new build and refurbishment applications, in both warm roof and cold roof construction, the membrane provided the age-resistant, weatherproof covering to the modules’ metal deck. With the roof installed, the castle was transferred to the shopping centre where it was craned into its position then weathered together – the Mall’s outdoor car park. Single Ply Services had four days off site to install a new warm roof weathered with Sika-Trocal SGK and then just one day on site to fully-seal the roof’s connecting joints to ensure its weathertightness and readiness for Winter Wonderland’s grand opening. The fully-adhered Type SGK roofing membrane is approved by the British Board of Agrément (BBA) to have a life expectancy in excess of 35 years. It’s easy-to-apply properties ensured Winter Wonderland’s star attraction was completed in-line with the client’s strict deadline, whilst providing an aesthetically-pleasing finish to enhance the castle’s magical appeal for young visitors throughout the festive period. +44 (0)1707 394444
