Allergies and Chiropractic Care
Written by Heather Sefried, DC, Chiropractor, Expert Contributor and Owner of The Joint – Newtown Square
Countless people struggle with allergies each year. With fall approaching, we are in peak season for Ragweed-fueled allergies. Some people are affected so greatly by allergies that it prohibits them from enjoying any outdoor activity, and still leaves them dreading the sore throat, itchy eyes and/or runny nose they can pretty much count on, all symptoms of their allergic reaction. But to what? And why at this most beautiful time of the year?
In North America, ragweed plants have their greatest effect as an allergen during the fall season. One plant can produce up to a billion grains of pollen per season! Winds carry pollen from ragweed plants for hundreds of miles, creating a substantial effect this time of year. All the unpleasant symptoms are brought on by inflammatory reactions in our bodies, or more commonly referred to as histamine.
How do we combat allergies? The same way our bodies fight off any illness: with our immune system. That system is in place to combat foreign substances by using protective proteins, or antibodies, to keep us healthy and safe. This is where our nervous system comes in because it controls every function of the body, including our immune system. This is the most crucial system in the body because it controls our movement, how our organs function, and even how our body heals. All of those functions are possible because our nervous system feeds information to our brain.
When the body’s spine is misaligned, the nervous system cannot function properly because the information received by the brain is either incomplete or cut off entirely. This is the number one factor in the human body that interrupts the flow of information to the brain. Subluxation, or misalignment in the spine, weakens the immune system and causes it to function improperly. Because subluxation of the spine can be caused by our daily activities, it’s important to take care of our spine.
Chiropractic care is a natural way of addressing misalignment of the spine. Once your spine is regularly aligned, the proper flow of information to the brain is restored, and the immune system is strengthened.
