Design From the Floor Up

by Expert Contributor Jim Casar of Carpet Warehouse

Most homeowners enjoy watching fixer-upper type home makeover shows from time to time. One of the most crucial times to read, watch and click on every bit of information you can find on your particular makeover project is when you are at the beginning.

So, where do you go when you’re starting from scratch with a new room or a whole house? Designers often say it’s best to design from the floor up, which means to select the floor first, and then work on the rest to coordinate and unify. For most homeowners’ needs, there are five basic categories of floor coverings to consider.

Area Rugs:

When considering the use of area rugs, think of the floor as the canvas, and the area rugs are the art. Layering is one of the hottest trends right now. Even if you already have flooring, such as hardwood or wall-to-wall carpeting, a scatter rug or runner will highlight, accent and add design interest.

Carpet:

When choosing floor coverings for some bedrooms and other upstairs rooms, carpet makes a room feel finished and comfortable. There are many choices when it comes to carpet so you should be able to find the exact fit and look you want. From the color, the look, the fiber type and pattern, the look you want can be targeted to the exact carpet you need.

Laminate:

While adapting to changing circumstances recently, living spaces have taken on new functions and purposes. Work, school, play and life are now converging at home more than ever before. You need a floor that’s durable enough to handle your new lifestyle but beautiful enough to be something you like looking at all day such as the newest generation of laminated wood flooring.

Luxury Vinyl:

The next decade of interior decor trends is expected to usher in styles that encourage bold and creative ideas as well as happiness and wellness at home. The past few years have been all about a clean, almost sterile look filled with whites and grays. But trends are moving toward a decade filled with bold personality. All of this means that luxury vinyl flooring is often the perfect choice to reflect who you are.

Hardwood:

No matter what your favorite top design trend is, you can find a hardwood flooring to suit your taste perfectly. With natural characteristics, knots and grains, along with the new wider, longer plank formats hardwoods will continue to provide maximum wood appeal. The cool natural color palette of soft white, beige and gray will enhance modern room scenes across the board. Ultra-matte finishes with light brushing will bring out the character that everyone craves.
