My other sponsorship goals for 2025 are also related to increasing our advertising Sponsors who are committed to supporting the residents of Newtown Township who are important to the success of their business. Dear Residents, 2025 January
Fr ie nd s & Ne igh
Coming into 2025, I set some new year goals for our hometown magazine. One goal was to secure a new Resident Feature Sponsor for our cover story of each new monthly issue. That goal has been achieved already, thanks to Finley Catering, the #1 venue caterer in the Philadelphia Region. Known for their upscale city venues, including the regal Union Trust in the historic district, the legendary Crystal Tea Room on the 9th floor of the Wanamaker Building, and The Ben at the Ben Franklin Hotel in Center City, Finley Catering is also at home in Newtown Square with their Ballroom at Ellis Preserve and Finley’s newest venue, The Ivy at Ellis Preserve. With Finley Catering hosting so many business events and family gatherings, becoming our Sponsor of the monthly Resident Feature was natural. Read about Finley Catering joining the Bringing People Together mission of our magazine and their sponsorship of our cover story Resident Feature this month about Peter and Judith Lake, and their story of Faith, Family and Service beginning on page 6.

I was fortunate to be invited to The Ivy’s grand opening event back in November. From the moment I stepped inside, I could see why anyone looking to book their wedding or event would want it to be there. In true Finley fashion, guests were treated to the absolute best drinks, appetizers, dinner, live music and entertainment. The event brought together family, neighbors, community leaders and business owners, who were able to tour the venue, enjoy each other’s company, dance the night away and congratulate the Finleys on another stunning success.

The Finleys are no strangers to our hometown. The Ballroom at Ellis Preserve, which opened in 2016, is Finley Catering’s fourth historical landmark and is a grand Greek revival facility with towering columns that honor the legacy of Charles Ellis. Returning to its roots, Finley Catering brought a new dimension to weddings and corporate clients in Newtown Square by combining culinary expertise and top-notch service with the idyllic grounds for an outdoor ceremony or cocktail hour, along with the state-of-theart grandiose Ballroom for wedding receptions and special events.

Finley Catering’s values and commitment to excellence have remained unchanged since 1976. Steve and Tom continue to strive for perfection in all aspects of their profession. They credit the success of Finley Catering to hard work, dedication to detail, exquisite cuisine and top-notch employees. Their accomplishments, small or large, have earned them a reputation that has resulted in notable weddings and corporate functions at their exclusive locations. On behalf of your Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors, we would like to extend a warm welcome and continued success in the new year. NS
Finley Catering has grown considerably over the last 45 years. Founder and CEO Steve Finley, teaming with his brother, Tom, has created an undeniable force in the area’s catering industry. It is a true family affair; Steve and Tom’s spouses, Carol and Trish, are integrally involved. Now, the next generation, Steve’s daughters, Michelle and Stephanie, and Tom’s son, Tommy, are working hard to make it a true family business. Finley Catering is proud to operate five impressive venues throughout Philadelphia and Newtown Square. In addition to The Ivy at Ellis Preserve and The Ballroom at Ellis Preserve, they provide Simply the Best for their guests at the Crystal Tea Room, Ballroom at the Ben and Union Trust in Philadelphia, each with its own unique story and charm. The Crystal Tea Room is situated in the heart of Philadelphia, just steps from City Hall. It is an elegant venue with a rich history, carved columns, an indoor conservatory and timeless decor. The Ballroom at the Ben is an iconic landmark known for its grand and luxurious ballroom space which is overlooked by its mezzanine level where cocktail hour is usually held. The Historic District of Philadelphia is home to Union Trust. Union Trust is one of the city’s chicest wedding and special event locations. It features soaring sixty-five-foot illuminated engraved ceilings, architecturally accented walls, multiple private rooms and a breathtaking wraparound mezzanine overlooking the whole site. Peter and Judith Lake: Faith, Family and Service
his month, Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors is pleased to introduce you to Peter and Judith Lake, who have called Newtown Square their beloved hometown for over 41 years! Peter hails from Syracuse, New York, where he lived with his parents and two sisters, Lois and Nina. He graduated from Nottingham High School, where he developed an interest in mechanical and architectural drawing. Peter continued his education at Oswego State University in New York, studying industrial arts education. Some years later, he attended Gordon College in Massachusetts, earning a degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis on teaching middle school students. After graduating, Peter set his sights on securing a teaching position. In 1983, he applied to Delaware County Christian School (DC) in Newtown Square and accepted an offer to teach 6th graders. This became his favorite age group in middle school, and he taught different subjects, including the Bible, language arts, creative writing and manners, which were the most important classes. During that time, Peter acquired his master’s degree in elementary education administration from Villanova University, but he enjoyed the classroom too much to consider an administrative position. Peter wore many hats at DC. After school, he coached middle school soccer and track and field. He also worked on campus grounds and did other jobs with the school maintenance team. Because the family lived on the campus, he was responsible for locking up at night. He retired from DC in 2010 after 30 years, but slowing down wasn’t part of his plan.
Judith is originally from Essex, Connecticut, where she grew up with her parents, her sister Sue and her brother Steve. She graduated from Williams School for Girls and Lasell College in Auburndale, Massachusetts. Her degree was in Retailing, but she got a job as a residential and business service representative for the New England Telephone Company in Boston before leaving for Scotland in the summer of 1970 and spending nearly four years overseas. “Once we moved to Newtown Square and our three sons were school-age, I worked for 33 years as the undergraduate admissions receptionist at Eastern University in St. Davids,” Judith said. “My position involved greeting students and parents Continued on page 10
The next step in his career was working as a lifeguard and swim instructor at the Suburban Seahawks Club in Newtown Square. After six years there, he taught at Bingham’s Aqua Motion & Mechanics, LLC (BAMM) in West Chester until 2023. He greatly enjoyed learning from Carolyn Bingham how to best teach swimming and water safety to children and young adults, especially those with physical needs and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) kids. It was rewarding for him to see so many people — young and old — improve over time in this most important life skill of swimming in the BAMM warm water pool. For one year, Peter also helped manage a local COVID testing site during the height of the pandemic. These days, you’ll find Peter working at the front desk at our PA State Representative, Lisa Borowski’s office. “I began working for Lisa in 2022 when she was first elected, and now that she recently won re-election, I am fortunate that I get to work with her for another two-year term,” Peter said. “I really enjoy helping people solve their state-related issues, imparting hope when I can.” Judith and Peter Lake enjoying Drexel Lodge Park

Resident Feature for their time visiting campus.” Judith added that early on, one of the professors referred to her as “the voice of Eastern” and that became how she was known around the school. Judith said she enjoyed engaging with and assisting people on the phone and in person. “I loved my work making people feel welcome, answering questions about Eastern, and introducing them to student tour guides and admissions counselors or faculty members on campus,” Judith explained. “Peter and I loved and valued the quality of education at both institutions so much that all three of our sons attended Delaware County Christian School and Eastern University.” Judith retired in 2019 and, just like her husband, had no plans to slow down. In November 2023, she published a book on Amazon that she wrote about life in her twenties. “My book is titled On the Road to Find Out ~ A 1970s Memoir by Judith Hopkins Lake,” she said. “It is about living in Edinburgh, Scotland for a year, then hitchhiking overland through many countries on the way to New Zealand -- only to be robbed in Afghanistan and being rescued by a Christian mission community.” Judith credits God and the kindness of many people for a dramatic change in her life. The book tells the story of a fascinating period in the 1970s when hundreds of Westerners took great risks and sometimes steps of faith "on the road to find out" on the hippie trail. On the Road to Find Out ends with a chapter about how Judith met Peter in Darien, CT, in 1975. “I was at St. Paul’s Church for bible study and prayer time,” Judith said. “As I was going down the aisle to leave, my friend from the choir, Nina, ran up to me saying she wanted me to meet her brother, Peter.” Judith and Peter introduced themselves, shook hands and parted ways. A few months later, Peter returned to St. Paul’s with his family for a service in honor of his father’s birthday. That was when Peter was approached by the organist, asking him to join the choir. “At that time in my life, I wasn’t too keen on regularly attending church, let alone joining a choir,” Peter said. “But when I returned home that night, I prayed about it and asked God to guide me.” Peter joined the choir and began to read the Bible. He and Judith began to see each other often at church, and their relationship grew. They had their first date on December 5th. “Peter took me to an old inn called The Three Bears Inn,” Judith recalled. “We

enjoyed wine before a roaring fireplace, followed by a romantic candlelit dinner.” Both Peter and Judith said that they felt a strong sense of God’s presence in their relationship. They were engaged in February 1976 and married on August 7th of that year in a church filled with their pastors, family and friends. The newlyweds spent their honeymoon on the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick, Canada, then settled down in Watertown, CT, where Peter worked as a youth minister for Christ Church and Youth for Christ for two years before returning to school at Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts. Before he graduated, Judith and Peter had three sons, and Judith was a stay-at-home mom for 10 years. Josh is Judith and Peter’s firstborn. He heads the science department at Pomfret School in Pomfret, CT. He operates the school’s observatory, where he won the National Geographic Amateur Astronomy Picture Award for a photo he took using the school’s telescope. Josh recently created a card deck called Codes Against

Their youngest son is Dan, the operations chief of a 400-unit apartment complex in Warminster. Dan also has two kids: Cole, 16, and Cali, 12. All six grandchildren get along famously, and we all love our family reunions. When the Lakes moved to Newtown Square, they lived for 20 years on the Delaware County Christian School property. For the first year, they lived in the barn that had been the kindergarten before DC moved the elementary school to the Alice Grimm School, which is now Stratford Friends School. From the barn, they moved to the carriage house, which was demolished to create another playing field. Lastly, they lived for several years in “The Mansion”—once the Strawbridge estate — before buying their first home. Peter and Judith began their home search and found the perfect place in a neighborhood near Gentile’s Market. “Our neighbors are super-friendly,” Peter said. “We are always outside walking the neighborhood, and we like to say we make connections at intersections.” Judith and Peter particularly enjoy hosting backyard gatherings with their friends and family and playing games with their grandchildren. Community service and connections are important to Peter and Judith. “Peter and I are long-time members at Springton Lake Presbyterian Church in Newtown Square,” Judith said. “I am the “welcome lady” at the end of services every Sunday, greeting newcomers and guests to the church. I also volunteer to edit our church newsletter and enjoy a weekly women’s Bible study that I occasionally help facilitate.” Judith also assists senior women with appointments or errands and sometimes a lunch out in town for a treat. Every Wednesday, she babysits their neighbor’s baby boy, who brings much joy. Peter helps out at church with parking and serves as vice-chair on the Newtown Township Parks and Recreation Board. He volunteers for the community, and Drexel Lodge Park has become a favorite place for them as a couple to unwind and enjoy a beautiful spot.

Tips For a Safe 2025
T
he holiday season is always a special time of year, but it seems to fly by so quickly. Between decorating, shopping and cooking, we often forget to take a moment for ourselves and find peace amid the busyness. Now that the New Year is upon us, it’s a perfect time to embrace new practices that can help bring more ease and calm into our daily lives in 2025 and beyond. Shopping Online When shopping online, protect your personal information by deleting your browser history after each purchase, especially when making banking transactions. Hackers can often access your data through your browsing history. Look for secure websites — these will have a lock symbol or the word “secure” in the browser address bar. Keep a list of your purchases to ensure everything arrives as expected.

Shopping in Stores When shopping in person, prioritize safety. Choose well-lit areas, park as close to the entrance as possible and stay aware of your surroundings. Always secure your packages in your car before engaging with anyone, and if you feel uncomfortable or suspect you’re being followed, go straight to a police station instead of heading home. Hiring a Contractor Engaging a contractor can be a stressful process, but taking a few extra steps can help ensure you find the right person for the job. Before giving anyone a deposit, check reviews on platforms like Angi, Yelp, the Better Business Bureau and Google. You can also verify their credentials through your local municipality or state website. Always request copies of their insurance and certifications to confirm they are properly licensed and insured. Custody Situations For parents navigating custody arrangements, open communication is key. It’s important to discuss plans with each other well in advance. If there is a custody order in place, keep it handy for easy reference, as it will outline specific dates, times and vacation periods that each parent should follow. By working together around these agreed-upon periods, both parents can plan family visits, social gatherings and special events in a way that minimizes stress for everyone involved. Remember, treat others the way you would like to be treated to create a harmonious co-parenting environment. As we embrace the New Year, remember that small actions can have a big impact on our well-being. A smile can go a long way— when you smile, others are likely to smile back. Wishing you a peaceful, safe and fulfilling year ahead! NS

O’Donnell Roofing Co. On to the Next 100 Years!
O
’Donnell Roofing Co. held a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by The Exton Region Chamber of Commerce at its newest location in Berwyn this past October to celebrate 100 years of family ownership. The celebration continued when family, friends, co-workers and clients gathered for a well-deserved anniversary bash at Paxon Hollow Country Club. The company, still strong and growing, has experienced many transitions over the past century. While much has changed, the family-owned and operated company says its values and commitments have stayed the same and have passed from generation to generation: quality workmanship, honest advice, a dedication to doing things right and putting the customer first. O’Donnell Roofing Co.’s reputation for professionalism and dependability goes back four generations and an entire century. Owner Kevin O’Donnell’s great-grandfather Clement Aloysius (C.A.) O’Donnell founded the company in West Philadelphia in 1924. C.A. was taught the roofing trade and started doing small repairs and installing new roofs with a Philadelphia roofing and sheet metal company. His ambition led him to become a skilled roofing mechanic and entrepreneur. Back then, C.A. didn’t just focus on roofing but also provided a number of other services to its customers. During the winter season, he serviced oil burners and owned a metal shop that fabricated roofing and heating materials.
Since the 1920s, both the roofing industry and the O’Donnell family business have seen significant changes. In the 1950s, Kevin’s grandfather, Clement Aloysius Jr., took the reins from his father and maintained the company’s values for nearly 30 years. He explored newer options in roofing and siding as a more cost-effective way to meet client’s needs and expanded the company’s service to the Philadelphia suburbs. Then, in the 1980s, Kevin’s father, Laurence (Larry), took on the executive management role. Larry renamed and incorporated O’Donnell Roofing Co. and expanded services to include commercial roofing and historic restoration. Several of Larry’s restoration projects garnered attention, including projects at Longwood Gardens, Merion train station and Pomona Hall in Camden, among others. “My dad’s work became the area’s premier standard for custom metal and restoration roofing,” said Kevin. Kevin was 12 years old when he began working with his dad and learning the business. He attributes that time spent with his dad to his strong work ethic. After graduating from Haverford High School, Kevin moved to Vermont to study Business Administration Management at the Community College of Vermont. Kevin enjoyed running a deli and skiing as much as possible during his college years. But, ultimately, he knew he’d want to return to Pennsylvania and decided to move back to Havertown to work with his dad again.

Kevin quickly became a journeyman roofer and job site foreman. A few years later, he began focusing on sales and the growth of the business. Larry eventually passed the torch to Kevin, who took full ownership of the company in 2017. The company has been growing rapidly ever since, going from five employees to 20+. Larry continues to be a project manager,
focusing on quality control, troubleshooting leaks and providing ongoing training to their installers and estimators. O’Donnell Roofing Co.’s training and production hub is located in Upper Darby, and they recently opened a Berwyn location for offices and a showroom. In addition to residential and commercial roofing services, O’Donnell Roofing Co. also offers siding, gutter and window installation, solar panels and many other custom home exterior options. Kevin said that not only are their staff experts in installation, but they are all hard-working and dependable. “From the sales staff, the managers to the roofing mechanics and installers, they’re happy and motivated, and that holds a lot of weight,” he said. In addition to being a valued valued Sponsor in Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors, Kevin and his team actively volunteer with and donate to our local sports teams, to our community and to charity organizations. “We appreciate the strength of our community, and we wouldn’t be who we are without our customers,” said Kevin. This past fall, Kevin and his team raised a significant amount of money for Unite for HER, a local non-profit organization supporting those affected by breast and ovarian cancers. They held a “Dink for Pink” pickleball tournament that well exceeded their fundraising goal. In addition to the tournament, O’Donnell Roofing Co. helps many other organizations throughout the year. They sponsored a family through Grands Stepping Up, a local nonprofit that helps grandparents who are raising their grandchildren, donated toys to the Delaware County Veterans Memorial Association, donated a new roof for a shed for the Newtown Square Petticoat League as well as sponsored quite a few youth baseball and softball organizations. Their generosity was also extended to sponsor two nonprofits in the first-ever Delco Gives Day, the Mighty MoJo’s Warriors Run in honor of Molly Joan, who fought fiercely for 44 days against Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) at CHOP before passing away in September 2021 and held a food drive for the Chester County Food Bank. That commitment to customers and the community has kept O’Donnell Roofing Co. in business for nearly 100 years. Over the past century, their mission to provide quality roofing services to their customers in a timely and professional manner hasn’t changed. Whether you are building a new house or renovating your current home, the exterior home will boost your curb appeal and show off your style. artin Luther King Day is ahead on January 20th, the same day our new president is inaugurated. Next month, we’ll celebrate Valentine’s Day. Some days are holidays celebrated by many; some even by an Act of Congress. Other days carry traditional awareness, curiously honored, like Groundhog Day. But what about all those other awareness days we learn about in news and entertainment media? They’re promoted as being on a national calendar but are far from our awareness until we’re reminded to observe some special day to hope for some cure or practice for better health or to honor relationships, places or good food.

January 2025
Some announced national days aim our mindfulness toward serious matters, while other national days declared with the same authority appear to intentionally ignite a joyful chuckle over the inanity of such intended observance even for one day. There seems to be a National “Whatever” Day for everything. In just the first week of January 2025 alone comes National… Drinking Straw Day, Spaghetti Day, Trivia Day, Whipped Cream Day, Cuddle Up Day and Bobblehead Day. And that’s just half of the declared National Days for just the first week of the first month of 2025. How can this be?!? What about a “National Bringing People Together Day?” Why not a Bringing People Together Month? No need. Because every day of every month, Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors is Bringing People Together through our unique brand of social-media-in-print, through our magazine delivered monthly into Newtown Square homes, and online at NewtownSquareMag.com. There may be no declared National Bringing People Together Day by some fee paid to land it on the National Day Calendar. There’s no need. The fees are paid every month by our business Sponsors, who show us just how much Bringing People Together is important to them, and how important Newtown Square residents are to the success of their business. Each one of our advertising Sponsors has chosen to use a portion of their limited marketing budget to serve us in Bringing People Together in Newtown Square by making our free hometown magazine possible. In this new year, whenever you read or hear about some National “Whatever” Day, let your first thought be that every day for Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors is a Bringing People Together Day because of the contribution to our community made by the businesses seen advertising on the pages of your hometown magazine. Whenever possible, with strong intention, choose to do business with them first, to honor their service to our community. It’s the kind of service you’ll never see coming from e-commerce websites and big-box stores. NS

Embracing the Joy of Learning in 2025
H
ave you ever held back from trying something new because you’re afraid you won’t be good at it? Maybe you’ve told yourself you’re not talented enough, experienced enough or that it’s just too late to start. The truth is, it’s never too late to try something new! Whether it’s learning to dance or tackling any other challenge, it’s always possible to grow, discover and find joy in the process. After all, the human brain is incredibly adaptable, and with time and practice, you are capable of learning new things. The idea that we are “too old” or “not capable enough” is a common barrier many of us face when thinking about starting something new. But the truth is, while we get in our own way with self-defeating thoughts, it turns out that our brains possess the ability to change, adapt and rewire themselves throughout life in response to experiences, learning and environmental factors. This concept is known as neuroplasticity, which means that the more we engage in an activity, the more our brain forms new connections. As a result, we grow, learn and improve — even in areas we may have previously thought were beyond our reach. Take dancing, for example. As a beginner, you might feel self-conscious about your lack of experience or coordination. Whatever your fears or worries might be, the beauty of dance lies in its ability to build new skills from the ground up. Each step, each movement and each class offers an opportunity for your brain
to adapt and strengthen. Over time, the awkwardness you might be feeling today will transform into muscle memory, rhythm and confidence. Dance or any form of physical activity is a fantastic way to boost mental and emotional well-being. Studies have shown that dancing reduces stress, improves mood and enhances cognitive function. It’s not just about mastering choreography— it’s about the joy of movement, the freedom of expression and the connection to your body and others. And who said anything about being perfect in anything you try? It comes down to being willing to start. And what better time than January to begin? As the new year rolls in, many of us feel inspired to make changes, set goals and take on new challenges. January offers a fresh start, an opportunity to embrace new beginnings, and the cold winter months provide an opportunity to focus on indoor activities that challenge and stimulate your mind. By taking that first initial step, you’ll find that the joy of learning something new isn’t just about acquiring a new skill, but about embracing the process of becoming. The more you push past your doubts, the more you’ll realize that you’re capable of far more than you ever imagined. NS

Marple Civic Youth’s Children’s Memorial Rose Garden
uring this season of good cheer, good deeds and generosity, we like to feature folks in our area who give their time, talents, energy and resources to those in need. Our community is undoubtedly filled with generous people who expect nothing in return other than knowing they make a difference in someone’s life. Our Marple Civic Youth (MCY) has proven time and time again that teens have the power to make a difference. Not only do they organize numerous successful community events, they learn valuable skills in the process. Most recently, this group of dedicated volunteers created, implemented and dedicated a beautiful Children’s Memorial Rose Garden, located at Veterans Memorial Park, and the Adult Legacy Tree Project—leaving a lasting mark on our community.
“We have a lot of folks to thank for their generosity,” Demetra noted. “Marple Township donated their labor to build the garden’s wooden frame and bridge, Home Depot donated the lumber and Martino Signs donated the wooden sign at the entrance and the plaques for each child.” MCY also received generous donations from Luciano’s Light Foundation, Matthew’s Moonlight Foundation and many families and businesses that wanted to show their support.
Remembering our children gone too soon
The project was the vision of Rachel D’Ambrosio, who serves as MCY’s Vice President. Rachel also took on the role of the group’s President of the Sustainability Committee, and her commitment to sustainability allowed her to think about ways to support not only our environment but our relationships within the community. Rachel’s mom, Demetra, is one of MCY’s parent advisors and explained how the idea for the garden came to be. “It began last February when our community was coming together to support the Petransky family after the sudden passing of their little boy, Benny,” she said. “The town was going Blue for Benny, which sparked a conversation about how amazing it is that our friends Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors
It also led Rachel to start thinking about how to come up with a project that could combine tangible sustainability practices while fostering a lasting legacy of community connection. “My vision for the Children’s Rose Garden was to create a dedicated space for families to honor and remember their child,” Rachel explained. “I wanted it to be a positive place where we could gather to remember our loved ones and celebrate them by continuing to say their names.” With the plan in place, MCY’s Sustainable Committee got to work. There were meetings with township officials to select the location, develop and submit building plans and secure approvals and permits. The committee then had to raise enough funds to build the garden and continue to work on plans to secure funds for future improvements, repairs and maintenance. They asked community members and local businesses for donations of time and money, which was well received.

and neighbors always show such strong support for families that have suffered losses.”
January 2025
The response from the community was overwhelming, not just from generous donors but from families who requested their loved one be included. “We had always intended for the garden to memorialize children, so we had to come up with another plan for the families who wanted their adult loved ones remembered,” Rachel said. “We decided to expand our sustainability initiative beyond Marple Newtown by purchasing legacy trees that are planted in our national forests.” Each family that has a tree planted in their loved one’s memory receives a keepsake certificate. The garden was completed this past fall, and a remembrance ceremony was held on October 20th. It was a beautiful day when families and friends gathered to honor those we’ve lost and to
offer comfort, hope and healing to grieving families. The program included words of remembrance from family members, meaningful music and songs, a memorial photo wall and a balloon release.
my family and other children, Lucas’s brother and sister, feel connected,” Tara added. “I am profoundly grateful to this group for giving us this opportunity to remember and honor Lucas.”
The O’Malley family was there to remember their Sweet Melissa, who passed away in April. “To be honest, as the day of the dedication was approaching, I was feeling hesitant,” explained Melissa’s mom, Missy. “However, the day was perfect, and the garden is in the most beautiful spot in Veterans Park. As I watched these kids who organized the garden and this ceremony, my hesitation changed into an amazing sense of hope. These kids were in it with us. They had tears. They empathized. We were all connected in that moment.” Missy added that being in Veterans Park was so perfect because many of the children being remembered grew up playing there. “Their laughter lived there, and now we have a space for all to remember them,” she said. “I can’t help but believe that the goodness in our children was reflected back to us that day in such a giving way. We are grateful.”
Melissa Shelly lost her son, Andrew in August 2017. She and her family attended the ceremony as well. “When any parent loses their child, one of our greatest fears is that people will forget about our son or daughter,” she explained. “As the years go by, people stop saying their names and avoid bringing them up, thinking it will cause us pain. It is exactly the opposite; we want to hear their names and share memories of our children.” Melissa feels that having this memorial garden in our community is such a gift because when people gather in the playground, walk the track or relax by the gazebo, they can enjoy this beautiful garden and see the children’s names. “I am so grateful that these young adults from the Marple Civic Youth Association took their time and energy to honor my son, Andrew, and all of the other local family’s children.”
Tara Gallo’s son, Lucas has a memorial plaque in the garden. “When I saw the Children’s Memorial Garden project being posted about back in the summer, it felt like fate. This year marks 10 years since we lost our son Lucas, and I had been looking for a way to honor him,” she said. “The MCY group thought of everything—the plaque, the quotes, the ceremony—it was all a beautiful tribute to our children.” Tara and her husband, Mike, said that one of the hardest parts of Lucas being stillborn is the isolation, feeling like you are the only ones who knew your child. This memorial garden was a way for this group of young people to honor their son and know that their family was not alone. “This park is where
A Holiday Service was held on the afternoon of December 22nd. It was open to Marple Newtown residents, and all were invited to participate by sharing the names of their loved ones so they could be honored during the service. The MCY members put up a beautiful tree in the garden, complete with ornaments provided by the committee. Thank you, Marple Civic Youth, for this beautiful rose garden and for your steadfast commitment to honoring our loved ones for many years to come. May they never be forgotten, and may we always say their names. Street Tree Initiative Is Underway
here is no doubt that the landscape of Newtown Square has changed dramatically over the last few years. And many will argue that there’s more hardscaping than landscaping going on these days. While the unprecedented growth of new housing developments and new businesses helps to support our local economy, there is also a lot of work being done to ensure our commitment to a positive impact on the environment through the protection, conservation, management, promotion and use of the finite natural resources located within the Township. This past August, Newtown Township, along with the Shade Tree Commission and the Environmental Advisory Council (EAC), announced a new initiative to increase the number of shade trees planted along our township’s streets within the right-of-way. And thanks to an impressive joint effort by these groups and the township’s Public Works Department, phase one of their Street Tree Program was rolled out on Saturday, November 9th. This multi-phase initiative is designed to increase the number of shade trees planted along our township’s streets. “Street trees can improve neighborhood esthetics and increase property values,” said Trish Adams, Chair of the Shade Tree Commission. “They also provide environmental benefits to the community by cooling hot pavement in the summer and helping to mitigate the effects of stormwater runoff.”
Volunteers were on hand to help homeowners plant their new trees 22
Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors
The committees began by gathering to pinpoint select neighborhoods in the township where street trees were most needed. In particular, the first phase was selected because of the need to place trees upland of Foxes Run, an important stream in our community. Other considerations are for areas where the tree canopy had been lost due to the Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive wood-boring beetle from Asia responsible for the death and decline of tens of millions of ash trees in North America. Sheila O’Sullivan-Feeney serves as Chair of the EAC. She explained, “For phase one, we offered the residents along Winding Way and Beechwood Roads the opportunity to receive a native tree for planting along their street.” Sheila added that this first "test" effort purposely took place in a relatively small area of the community so that the logistics could be worked out. The plan from there is to expand the program on a larger scale. Getting homeowners on board was a grassroots effort consisting of emailing residents, going door to door and mailing postcards. “We all worked really hard to reach out to our neighbors and educate them on the benefits of planting trees in their neighborhood,” Sheila explained. “The best part is that the cost of the trees themselves was covered under our initiative.” Residents were asked to contribute just $40 per tree to help offset supply costs and commit to providing care for the tree by watering it regularly

Planting trees can be dirty work!
for the first two years. Participating homeowners selected the tree they wanted to plant: poplar, birch, maple, oak, sycamore and dogwood. In all, 39 new street trees were planted in a well-coordinated effort by the Shade Tree Commission, the EAC and Newtown Township. The township provided 10"- 12" tall native shade trees, supplies such as stakes and ties, gator bags, deer protection and mulch, delivered the trees to each property, and assisted with preparing and planting at the site. Rob Vannicolo, Vice Chair of Shade Tree Commission and owner of Vannicolo Landscaping and Tree Service, was instrumental in this project. Rob and his crew pre~dug all the holes for the trees and assisted with planting as well.
Notable volunteers from our community were Dan Flynn of Flynn Tree Services, Carol Wagner, John Rice, Cindy Mehallow, Joe Pinto, Janet Krevenas and David Galluch. They dedicated their time and talents to this effort and deserve our thanks. Now that phase one is complete, the committee is busy planning phase two, Street Tree Plantings for 2025 Stay tuned! NS
Supervisors Leonard Altieri and Tina Roberts Lightcap were there to lend their helping hands. “I am grateful to be a part of this very important initiative,” Leonard said. “We are so appreciative of everyone who helped make this project possible.” Tina echoed Leonard’s sentiments. “Planting 39 trees in one day was a huge undertaking, but it was worth it,” she said. “We had so many volunteers from the EAC, the Shade Tree Commission, the township, local business owners and students from our Marple Newtown School District. It was a day that brought our community together and solidified our commitment to our neighborhoods.”

Scheduled Manufacturer Maintenance Is an Investment in Your Vehicle
egular maintenance is one of the most crucial aspects of vehicle ownership. While it may seem like an inconvenience or an unnecessary expense, adhering to your vehicle’s scheduled manufacturer maintenance is essential for ensuring its longevity, performance and safety. Preserving Vehicle Health and Preventing Major Repairs Your vehicle is a complex machine with many moving parts, each of which needs regular attention. Scheduled maintenance—such as oil changes, brake inspections, tire rotations and fluid checks— helps ensure that all systems are functioning correctly. By keeping up with these tasks, you can catch small issues before they turn into major problems, which could lead to costly repairs. For example, skipping an oil change could lead to engine wear and driveability issues.

Enhancing Safety Routine maintenance also plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of your vehicle. Tasks like brake pad replacements, tire rotations and suspension checks help maintain optimal vehicle handling and braking performance. Neglecting these checks can compromise the vehicle’s ability to respond in emergency situations, putting you and your passengers at risk. Furthermore, safety features like airbags and sensors may also need periodic updates or recalibrations to work correctly. Maintaining Vehicle Warranty Many vehicle manufacturers require that you follow a specific maintenance schedule in order to keep your warranty intact. Failing to meet these requirements could void your warranty, leaving you financially responsible for any repairs or replacements that would otherwise be covered. Staying on top of scheduled maintenance ensures you’re eligible for warranty claims if something goes wrong. Maximizing Resale Value A well-maintained vehicle retains its value much better than one with a history of neglect. Prospective buyers will be more likely to trust a car with a documented history of regular maintenance. Keeping detailed records of all services performed also off helps “A little thetotop” show that the vehicle was cared for properly.

In short, scheduled manufacturer maintenance is an investment in your vehicle’s performance, safety and long-term value. By following the recommended maintenance schedule, you’ll ensure your vehicle runs smoothly for years to come. NS

Stay Safe: Practicing
Everyday Situational Awareness
I
n today’s fast-paced world, many of us navigate daily life on autopilot. By practicing situational awareness, we can not only prevent potential threats but also stay confident and prepared in any environment. What Is Situational Awareness? Situational awareness means being aware of what’s happening around you and understanding how it could impact your safety. It’s not about living in fear but about staying alert and prepared. While law enforcement and security professionals often rely on this skill, it’s equally valuable for everyday citizens. Practical Tips for Everyday Situational Awareness Here are simple, actionable ways to enhance your awareness during daily activities: Walk with Purpose and Confidence When walking in public places like parking lots or shopping centers, keep your head up and walk with confidence. Predators often target individuals who seem distracted or unsure of themselves. Put the Phone Away Scrolling through your phone or engaging in a deep conversation while walking diminishes your awareness. Keep your phone in your pocket or bag and focus on your environment. Pay Attention to Who’s Around You Notice people in your vicinity. Are they acting unusually? Do they seem out of place? Trust your instincts if something feels off and adjust your path or behavior accordingly. Use Mirrors and Reflective Surfaces In parking lots or other areas where visibility might be limited, use reflective surfaces like car windows or store mirrors to check who’s behind you without turning around. Listen to Your Surroundings Avoid wearing headphones in environments where you need to stay alert. Your hearing is a critical sense for detecting unexpected movements or noises. Scan for Exits and Safe Zones When entering a building, take a moment to identify exits, security personnel or well-lit areas where you could seek help if needed. The Parking Lot Scenario A parking lot is a prime example of a place where situational awareness is crucial. Before walking to your car, have your keys ready and avoid fumbling in your bag. Take a quick glance around and
under your vehicle before getting in, ensuring no one is lurking nearby. As you approach, check for people sitting in nearby cars or lingering in the area. If you sense something is off, set off your car alarm using your key fob. The noise will likely deter anyone with bad intentions and draw attention to the area. Don’t hesitate to return to the store or ask for assistance if you feel unsafe. Building Good Habits Situational awareness isn’t about paranoia—it’s about forming habits that keep you safer. By staying present and alert, you’ll not only enhance your safety but also gain confidence in navigating any situation. Stay aware, stay safe!

How Winter Affects Your Plumbing
s temperatures drop during the winter months, homeowners face a unique set of challenges when it comes to their plumbing systems. Cold weather can put extra strain on pipes, fixtures and water supply lines, potentially leading to costly repairs and water damage. Understanding how winter affects your plumbing— and how to prevent problems— can save you from the headaches of frozen or burst pipes. Frozen Pipes One of the most common and damaging winter plumbing problems is frozen pipes. When water inside pipes freezes, it expands, creating pressure that can cause the pipes to crack or burst. This is especially a concern for pipes in uninsulated areas such as basements, attics or exterior walls. Once thawed, a burst pipe can lead to significant water damage and expensive repairs. Prevention Tip: Insulate vulnerable pipes, especially those in colder areas of the home, with foam sleeves or heat tape. Keep cabinets open in the kitchen and bathroom to allow warm air to circulate around pipes. Allow faucets to drip slowly when temperatures are at their lowest, which can help prevent freezing.
Increased Water Usage During winter, people tend to use more hot water for showers, baths and heating, putting added strain on water heaters. Additionally, if you’re using a fireplace or space heaters, your indoor humidity levels can drop, leading to drier air and increased water consumption to maintain comfort. Prevention Tip: Regularly maintain your water heater to ensure it operates efficiently. Consider installing a timer or upgrading to an energy-efficient model to handle the increased demand. Clogged Drains from Ice and Snow Winter storms can lead to ice buildup in exterior drains, causing water to back up and clog pipes. Snow and ice can also block gutters, leading to overflow that might enter your plumbing system and cause issues like leaks or pipe damage. Prevention Tip: Keep gutters clear of debris, and ensure that downspouts direct water away from the foundation of your home. Consider installing freeze-proof outdoor faucets and drain covers to prevent ice buildup. By taking proactive measures, you can protect your plumbing system from the harsh effects of winter and avoid costly repairs, ensuring a safe, functional home throughout the season. NS

Creating the Ultimate Winter Ambiance with a Cozy Gas Fireplace
s winter’s chill sets in, there’s no better way to transform your home into a warm and inviting retreat than with a cozy gas fireplace. Combining the charm of a traditional fire with the convenience of modern technology, a gas fireplace creates the perfect ambiance for cold winter evenings. One of the main benefits of a gas fireplace is its ability to provide instant warmth and comfort with just the flip of a switch or push of a button. Unlike wood-burning fireplaces that require time to build a fire and regular maintenance, a gas unit offers consistent heat with minimal effort. Whether you’re curling up with a book, enjoying a cup of cocoa or entertaining guests, the cozy glow of a gas fire can set the mood for any occasion. For the ultimate winter ambiance, consider integrating your gas fireplace with your home’s decor. Sleek, modern designs with clean lines can complement minimalist interiors, while more traditional models with stone surrounds add a rustic charm. You can also experiment with different fuels—such as logs, pebbles or crystals—to enhance the visual appeal of the flames and create a focal point in the room. Ambient lighting is key when setting the mood for winter relaxation. Many gas fireplaces feature adjustable flames, allowing you to control the intensity of the fire based on the time of day
or your desired atmosphere. Pair the fireplace with soft, dim lighting or candles to create a cozy, intimate environment that invites relaxation. Another great way to amplify the ambiance of your cozy winter retreat is by thoughtfully adding winter-inspired accessories that engage both the visual and tactile senses. These elements not only enhance comfort but also contribute to the overall aesthetic of your space, creating a layered, inviting environment. Plush throws, faux fur cushions and woolen rugs can enhance the feel of comfort in your space, while a well-placed winter-themed painting or decorative element can elevate the seasonal feel. A gas fireplace not only keeps you warm but also brings a sense of tranquility to your home. Whether you’re watching the snow fall outside or enjoying a quiet evening in, the soft crackling of the flames—combined with the gentle warmth—makes a gas fireplace the perfect companion for wintertime relaxation. ports have long been a powerful tool for bringing people together. Unfortunately, athletes with disabilities can face significant challenges in accessing competitive play. But The Marple Unified basketball team is proving that every player deserves a shot at greatness. Thanks to a dedicated group of coaches and volunteers, Marple’s Unified basketball team kicked off its first season this past fall. Not only did players learn skills and improve their physical health, most importantly, they had fun. “It was so rewarding to see both the players and volunteers have fun on the court,” said Joe Chilberti, coach and founder of the team. “It brought a smile to my face.” Unified Sports was created by the Special Olympics more than 20 years ago to foster an inclusive culture that extends beyond playing fields and gymnasiums. For athletes with intellectual and physical disabilities, being included in a team and achieving success in a sport can significantly boost their self-esteem and confidence. “It was great to see some of the players form friendships with classmates they may not see at school,” Joe added. Joe’s mom, Liz, said that not only do the athletes feel like winners, so do their parents. “To see your kids put on their uniforms and get a chance to play on a varsity team is really special,” she added. disabilities, fostering new friendships and social networks. It creates an inclusive experience where athletes with and without disabilities train and compete together. Athletes with disabilities (known as Unified athletes) are paired with athletes without disabilities (referred to as partners) to create balanced teams that work together for a common objective. Joe learned about Unified Sports through some friends from neighboring schools Radnor and Haverford. A freshman at Marple Newtown High School (MNHS) and an active member of several clubs including track, football, lacrosse and the Best Buddies club, Joe was looking for a way to give back to the community. “There were already some established teams in Delaware County, so this sounded like a perfect fit,” he said. “I wanted to give my classmates of all abilities a shot at competitive sport.” By recruiting some fellow students to volunteer and getting the word out to athletes, they formed a team comprised of an equal number of athletes and partners, all middle or high school students in the Marple Newtown community. The Unified league runs on donations and fundraising so there is no cost for families to join. Marple Unified played weekly Saturday games at The Haverford School for boys against schools such as Springfield, Radnor and Haverford with the end of season playoffs at Radnor, Haverford, Springfield and Strath Haven high schools. Thanks to the generosity of the Marple Recreation Center, the team was able to hold weekly practices in their gym. Joe explained that most of the rules are the same, but traveling and fouls aren’t called. “The rules are looser,” he said. “It’s more about making connections and having a whole lot of fun.”

For the Unified partners, they get to experience the satisfaction of contributing to the success of the team and witnessing the growth of their Unified teammates. ”It really allowed people to get to know each other better and strengthened friendships,” Joe recalled. Congrats to all of the players and volunteers and thank you for Bringing People Together in the Marple Newtown community! Joe and his team look forward to returning next fall and he also plans to start a Unified Handball team this April. Stay tuned!
