ABOUT ME In my opinion, landscape architecture is a bridge connecting human and nature. As urbanisation requires a highly sustainable human-nature relationship in modern cities while our landscape is not very environmental-friendly, I feel a sense of responsibility in my efforts. The site construction of healthy ecological space needs more macro-thinking and professional knowledge than geometry as the driving force of design. My early education backgrounds includes the art class of Tsinghua High School and the science class of Beijing No.4 High School, which laid a good foundation of both art and engineering for me. With my enthusiasm of beauty and nature, I believe I will be a capable landscape architect, a profession that requires a comprehensive knowledge. The four projects in my portfolio focus on human mental health demands, ecological conservation, educational environment and cultural heritage independently. For Synaesthesia Garden, I was inspired by my best friend in junior high school, who suffered from major depression disorder and made a successful recovery later. Refine City Destination with the largest scale of the site gave me the biggest challenge of site analysis and plan design, where I learned to balance beauty and practicability and grasp the scale. Seasonal Immersion is a playful project aiming to add vitality to the campus, and it carries affection for my university, the first modern university in China. Museum of City Momento is a short poem for my hometown Beijing, and it is an educational project which emphasises the importance of environmental protection through forms of arts. As my project progresses, I learned some marvelous design concepts of landscape projects such as the the Eden Project in Cornwall, the Nostalgia Design in Beijing and Exchange Square in Manchester. My idols are Martha Schwartz and Kongjian Yu, and I will forge to get closer to these outstanding seniors.

SYNAESTHESIA GARDEN

Healing Landscape Design / 2020.07 - 2020.10 Studies have shown that the healing landscape plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation of patients, especially for patients with depression. By 2020, depression has become the second major disease in the world. However, as the country with the largest number of depressed patients, China is only in its infancy in relevant treatment. In addition, the healing landscape of Chinese hospitals is extremely scarce. The target of this project is to transform the surrounding environment of Xianyue Hospital in Xiamen city, Fujian Province, and to create a medical landscape that is conducive to the rehabilitation of depressed patients. By reorganizing the publicity and privacy of the current space, this project establishes a synesthetic garden space which includes vision, hearing, touch and smell, in order to provide a better treatment experience and rehabilitation environment for depressed patients.

PROPORTION OF SUICIDE DUE TO DEPRESSION IN THE WORLD, 2019

PROPORTION OF DEPRESSED PATIENTS WITH EFFICTIVE TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSIS IN CHINA, 2019

BASIC DATA OF DEPRESSION

Patients with depression have a variety of complex psychological symptoms and physical symptoms such as pain and weakness. In the process of diagnosis and treatment, depressed patients are in high risk of a recurrence of depression,thus resisting treatment or reducing the curative effect. On the one hand, patients with depression are extremely sensitive to the external environment, so they need a variety of private space. On the other hand, they also need relatively public space to socialise and enjoy the sunshine, which is conducive to recovery.

PROGRAM & ZONING

EXISTING PROBLEMS

The site is located at Xianyue Hospital in Xiamen City, Fujian Province. Fujian Province is one of the provinces with the highest proportion of patients with major depression disorder in China. Xianyue Hospital is currently the most advanced hospital for the treatment of depression in Xiamen City.

BLOCKED PUBLIC SPACE

UNATTRACTIVE SEMI-PRIVATE SPACE

INDEFINITE PRIVATE SPACE WITH RUBBISH ACCUMULATION The site has many existing problems with a lack of proper design and functional zoning. For example, public space is blocked by randomly parked private cars; private space is unfriendly with garbage accumulation and poor planting; the outdoor space lacks multi-sensory atmosphere. DESIGN CONCEPT With a design concept of “synesthesia garden”, the planting design can create synesthesia experience in vision, touch, smell and taste. In terms of vision, the colours of angiosperm, flowering plants provide colourful garden landscapes, such as the pink of chorisia speciosa, the powdery purple of lavender, and the bright yellow of Taiwanese acacia. Visual stimulation can fully activate the mind of depressed patients. In terms of smell, aromatic plants with different flowering periods bloom successively throughout the year. In terms of touch, the fountain pools on the south side provide interactions with water, and plants provide delicate texture. In terms of taste, the fruits of plants such as mango trees can provide the sweet stimulation of taste buds.

Through plant arrangement and the utilization of height difference, the south side of the site is divided into semi-public space, semi-private space and private space, so as to meet the need for activity experience with different levels of privacy and interaction. The pocket space for outdoor psychological consultation and the garden level on the north side are equipped with comfortable seats, inviting people to enjoy a leisurely afternoon. Besides, the garden encourages patients to interact with nature through activities such as gardening and fruit picking, which help them to rebuild a connection with the outside world.

REDEFINE THE DESTINATION Waterfront Space Planning / 2020.03 - 2020.06

The project is located at the former site of Shiweitang Railway Station and Shiweitang Wharf in Liwan District, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, China. As a key area for innovation in Guangzhou, Liwan District has multiple functions, including transportation, industry, residence, commerce and ecological maintenance. This site lies on the junction of four major railway stations in the east, south, west and north of Guangzhou, and is adjacent to the Pearl River. The design creates a unique urban waterfront landscape with integrated functions of wetlands restoration, flood detention and industrial site conservation.

LOCATION

WATERSHED The water body by this site belongs to the lower reaches of the Pearl River, where the pollution accumulation is serious. The site is located in the largest secondary drinking water source of Pearl River, and is adjacent to the only primary drinking water source in the Pearl River Basin and the Pearl River section; the latter is an important shipping route. There are more than 10 wharfs in use within a radius of five kilometers, among which the Shiweitang Wharf inside the site has a history of 71 years.

STRATEGY 02 A soft river bank containing natural ecology is built in the internal area of the site, and a human-friendly wetland water purification system is equipped, so as to improve the ecological function and stormwater treatment technology of the Pearl River Shweitang Basin.

SITE INTRODUCTION

EXISTING PROBLEM 1. The decrease of transportation business puts forklifts and cranes in danger of lying idle. However, they still occupy the site and cause congestion;

2. Lack of attractive planting around the railway; bare mud and abandoned trains lack vigour and vitality;

3. Overgrown weeds grow on the railway track, which is unsightly and unwelcome to people;

4. The walls are poorly managed and covered with random graffiti.

SEASONAL IMMERSION

Campus Landscape Design / 2019.07 - 2019.10 Beiyangyuan Campus of Tianjin University is located in the suburb of Tianjin, which is 14 miles from the city centre. With less manual intervention and rich natural resources, this area is the habitat of many small wildlife. This campus is newly built in 2015, and it is the second campus of Tianjin University. Because of the step-bystep construction strategy and the priority development of the east area, outdoor activities on campus are relatively monotonous. Considering both students’ demand for a wider range of outdoor activities and the local climate characteristics with four distinct seasons, this project aims to create seasonal landscape with ecological and flexible campus space.

DESIGN GENERATION The generation process of my design is divided into three steps. Firstly, the wetland and its surrounding greenland are arranged in due west of the Youth Lake. Secondly, the activity areas are designed around the natural green belt. Lastly, the islands are connected, forming a passage running through the site. The triple superimposition of “green&blue network” “activity islands” and “public loop” creates a unite landscape system with harmonious coexistence of man and nature on campus.

Spring - Outdoor Theatre

Autumn - Campus Farm

Spring is the perfect season for an outdoor concert. The woodland theatre is adjacent to the southern side of the wetland waters. The terraced subsidence terrain and the enclosure of Platanus orientalis form a relatively independent space where students can practice musical instruments, read books and hold small outdoor concerts all year round, especially in spring and autumn when the climate is pleasant.

In autumn, farmland and orchard on the northernmost side of the site will have a bumper harvest. They not only provide field research conditions for students of related majors, but also encourage students to enjoy fruit picking. Jogging on the running track, students will have a panoramic view of the fertile farmland on the left side and the lakeside wetland on the right side. To take a rest, students can explore the pocket space for group activities.

Summer - Campus Wetland

Winter - Skating Rink

Summer is the most active season of the wetland system. This wetland receives and purifies the rainwater collected from roads and greenland around. It also provides an ideal habitat for wildlife such as waterfowls, fish and insects and a drinking water source for squirrels, stray cats and dogs. The vitality of wetland attracts students to explore nature and develop hobbies such as photography and wildlife observation.

In winter, the sub-zero temperatures will produce enough ice for safe skating on the wetland. Students can go through the wooden platform to step on the ice, and explore the fun of ice skating. Large birds such as swans and bar-headed geese can be spotted enjoying sunlight nearby. The viewing tower provides a visual focus on the opposite side, attracting students to cross the ice and place themselves in the golden reeds.

MUSEUM CASE STUDY

MASTERPLAN

Most of the exhibition space in the 183 existing museums is indoor in Beijing. Among these museums, 31 of them are national museums and the rest are local museums. However, there is no special museum in Beijing focusing on the issue of urban planning, urban development and the future prospect of the city.

This square is conceived as an urban museum which intertwines entertainment with educational significance. It is composed of the shape of flowing water and a huge map collage of Beijing. It is divided into two floors to realise a vertical utilisation of the space: the first floor resembles the flowing curve, and the second floor is a rectangular overlapping square with tempered glass, functioning as the tour path. The square can be roughly divided into five areas: the entrance, the main square, No.1 outdoor exhibition space, No.2 outdoor exhibition space and exit space. The large area of the square is landscaped into a modern rectangle, which is consistent with the second floor of the square. The small planted area corresponds to the long river lines on the ground floor, as if small oases in the long river of history.

2-Central Square On the second floor of the main square, the boundary of the square glass walkway is painted in Chinese red, which symbolises China’s spiritual totem. Inside the rectangle, there are concave-down squares in Chinese red and hollow square columns. The main square is an open public area for visiting. The glass walkway is embedded with virtual reality technology. When visitors step on some specific points, the walkway will sense the arrival of visitors, and display the historical stories of the city at the corresponding location through both smartphones and virtual screens. In the centre of the square, a sunken rain garden in the shape of a huge map of Beijing reminds people of the importance of water resources and modern environmental protection technologies. Rainwater on the hard pavement of the square is directed into it and seep down effectively. The pavilion in the shape of water stream on the square provides a shadow for a nice rest.
