OCTOBER 2016 ISSUE 1017

The Broadcaster “Missions exists because worship doesn’t.” I first read this quote in 2005 when reading the book Let the Nations Be Glad by John Piper. I was a part of a team getting ready to go on a short term missions trip led by Steve and Carol Hornbrook. I was honestly startled by this quote, “Missions exists because worship doesn’t.” I thought missions existed to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ through word and deed, through service and relationships. What did John Piper mean with the last part of the statement, “… because worship doesn’t?” I worship God, I see people worship God, what is he talking about? As I read on I started to understand a central concept which made the sentence make

sense. My summary of the concept is that God is worthy of worship by all the creatures He has made. When there are people who don’t know and therefore aren’t worshipping God, then it is not right. God is so great that everyone, everywhere should be worshipping Him. That would give Him glory and give everyone complete fulfillment as their heart and affections are set on God and not on themselves or the things of this world. With that understanding the statement, “Missions exists because worship doesn’t” started to come into clearer focus and understanding for me and changed my concept of missions. Yes, missions work involves sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ Continued on page 2.

through word and deed, through service and relationships, but the purpose of missions is to bring more worshippers to God that will worship Him in spirit and in truth. So, as a team we read that book and we prayed together and discussed what we were learning as we were in Ecuador meeting new people, as we were sharing the Gospel with our words, as we developed relationships with the sweet people there, as we helped with construction of a church, as we brought music instruction. Then me, as an individual, and we, as a team, started to understand this concept of the greatness of God and the purpose of bringing Him glory by bringing more worshippers to Him.

continue to reach out locally through South Side Mission, Peoria Rescue Mission and Child Evangelism Fellowship. We continue to reach students locally at Bradley and ICC through Bethany-sent staff and interns with PACM/CRU. We continue to do all of this to bring more worshippers to our great God because He is worthy. Some are in the field doing the daily work. Some are diligent in prayer for those in the field. Some are diligent in financially supporting those who are in the field. However, we are all called to be a part of this goal of bringing more worshippers to God, giving Him the glory due Him, because He alone is worthy.

“The purpose of missions is to bring more worshippers to God that will worship Him in spirit and in truth.”

It has now been 11 years since that mission trip. We now call missions, Global Outreach, which is good for many reasons. However, our purpose at Bethany remains the same. We continue to support Global Outreach Partners around the world. We continue to send out new Global Outreach Partners from Bethany. We continue to have short-term Global Outreach teams each year that come alongside our Partners. We

I encourage you to make plans to attend the events listed on pages 6-7, you will be blessed. You will also be an encouragement to those GO-Partners as they come and share about their ministries. You will learn how you can engage with them and pray for them as they seek to raise up worshipers of our great God in the U.S. and around the world. 
