FOREWORD First she broke the sentence; now she has broken the sequence. Very well, she has every right to do both these things if she does them not for the sake of breaking, but for the sake of creating. BETHANY RUSH FALMOUTH UNIVERSIT Y

-VW Hello! My name is Beth and I am a second year student at Falmouth University. As a designer my intention is to constantly explore the interconnection of words and visual imagery, not just as a means of communication, but as a way to convey an intricate narrative. Thank you for taking the time to look through my work, I hope you enjoy it.

MOVING IMAGE ONE WEEK

On March 28th, 1941, shortly after the dawn of the Second World War, author Virginia Woolf filled her overcoat pockets with rocks and walked into the river behind her house. In her wake she left a letter - her last piece of writing - to husband, Leonard. These final words were made public and in turn, she was met with hurrendous judgement, particularly from a woman named Kathleen Hicks. Hicks stated that Woolf had no right to take her own life when men were giving their lives selflessly for the greater good of the country. She saw it an an insult to those left at home, to the people who were ‘hiding their agony of mind, suffering bravely and carrying on unselfishly’. She concludes by imploring people to rethink any sympathy towards ‘this sort of “I cannot carry on”’. To add further controversy to this extremely frustrating melting pot, Leonard was provoked to compile a rebuttal in an attempt to claw back some semblance of truth, for his and Virginia’s sake. However, despite being so clear in his response, Leonard’s letter too was taken out of context. Published under the already misleading headline “I Cannot Carry On”, the article continue to replace the phrase ‘those terrible times’ with ‘these terrible times’, changing the meaning entirely. Thus infuriatingly, not only was Woolf ’s original letter misquoted, but this famous “I cannot carry on” is a phrase that had been entirely coined by the media and existed only to present Woolf ’s suicide as an act of cowardice rather than a personal tragedy. This continued in the press for over a year.

I decided to focus on the themes of permeation and fragmentation when developing an idea to carry forward. After working closely with these two terms, I came to conclusion that I wanted to reflect on the contrast between the fluid, stream-ofconsciousness style of Woolf ’s writing, and the disjointed nature of her mind in her final years, as well and the diverging opinions of the public and the press.

I thought it apt to consider Woolf ’s writing as a methodology, so I decided to use water - a trope that featured in almost all of Woolf ’s writing - as a medium that would physically distort the narrative I was trying to portray. As the reading goes on, the water moves more and more rapidly, making it harder to read the intended message.

FOR FUTURE REFERENCE *

T YPOGRAPHIC PUBLICATION SIX WEEKS

Ellen Lupton, in her essay ‘The Designer as Producer’ discusses the importance of designers being in control of their own verbal literacy in order to give them confidence to work with, and as, editors. Fundamentally, she believes that language can help to infuse the act of making with the act of thinking. This dissertation journal - a compendium of ten critical essays and additional writings - is a publication looking to promote writing and prove its value within in the arts. Each dissertation is a publication in its own right and exists to reflect each author’s most pointed opinions. When brought together as a collective, alongside articles from external contributors, every writer’s authorial voice remains distinctive and varied, all whilst being sympathetic to the over-arching system.

To connect the structure to the title, For Future Reference*, I decided to differentiate the layouts of certain sections and typeset them in a way which makes them most suitable for the time spent reading, and the style in which it is read. This meant that each dissertation was set into its own book with a larger point size and wider margins, while the supporting writing and citations are intergrated into a magazine layout with bold title pages, allowing the reader to cross-reference between the two.

NEW SEASON, NEW DIMENSION

ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN FOUR WEEKS

07722239313

The premise of this project was to inject a little more of what ballet is like today into the Royal Opera House’s advertising stratergy. The Royal Ballet is one of the most prestigious ballet companies in the world, leaving the public with the impression that ballet is only for the wealthy and upper class. With this in mind I wanted to demonstrate that ballet is not something that can be contained within such a rigorous archaic frame, but as an artform that is both permeable and adaptable; a spectrum as oposed to flat colour. In order to reach a wider audience, ballet needed to be broken down and reassembled into something familiar, but all the more enticing.

THE SOLITARY BEE FOUNDATION

BRAND CREATION SIX WEEKS

The wonderful thing about words is that often, they paint a picture in the mind without the need of any visual stimuli. Poetry in particular employs techniques that radiate emotive potency which is exactly why I wanted to base my entire brand and advertising campaign around it. While audiences have long been aware of the plight of bee, they have also become climatised to it. To reawaken the public to this issue, the scheme will start with a scattering of gold-foiled, hand embellished posters set up in public spaces. From these posters, consumers are then lead to The Solitary Bee Foundation website where they can sign up to recieve an information pack and letter writing set in the mail. This pack includes everything that somebody would need to write a letter to their local MP emploring them to take action, as well as a ‘blank’ poster and gold pen. Once the letter has been sent, participants are encouraged to embellish the poster with their handwriting and display it in a public space. As more action is taken to save the solitary bees, the number of posters around towns and cities will increase and hopefully, the solitary bee population will increase alongside them.

THE TAINTED TOUCH

NARRATIVE FOUR WEEKS

07722239313

On December 21st 2016, my aunty, uncle and cousins had to abandon their sailboat and home in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. They were at the beginning of their journey around the world when their rudder completely disintergrated. With repair attempts being continually thwarted they were forced to abandon ship and be rescued by another sailboat. They had been keeping a blog to update their family and friends about their adventure, but after the accident the Daily Mail caught on and published an article online despite my family ignoring their request. As expected from this website, the artcile was met ignorance and malice.

Initially, the reader is presented with two narratives: one glaringly obvious and the other a little more difficult to find. At first, the book appears to be completely blank, however once the reader has thumbed through it with inky hands, the story is simaltaneously revealed and concealed as the book is rendered blacker and blacker. Thus, the reader represents the media and it’s ability to turn something with innocent intentions into a sensationalised, fabricated version of the truth. to read the full story, click here.
