INTRODUCTION


A BO UT MI RICE is a gourmet ready-to-eat rice created for life on the go. Enjoy the tantalizing flavors of Japan with each curated flavor crafted with quality ingredients for a satisfying meal to fuel you throughout the day. MI RICE provides a healthy and epicurean alternative to fast food and is the perfect size to throw in a bag for a satisfying meal or quick snack.

This book documents my design and thought process in designing “MI RICE� from initial brainstorming to the final packaging and brand identity.

BAMBOO Not only is bamboo culturally relevant to the history of rice in asian cultures as it was used as a cooking and eating vessel, it’s structure gives it an excellent carrying capacity, making it an excellent packaging material. Inspired by the structural shape of bamboo, MI RICE’s packaging is modeled to fold out into a cylindrical shape.

SALVINA MOLESTA Since instant rice contains a lot of moisture, a packaging material that is water proof at least for the inside is crucial. Salvina Molesta is a waterproof coating that can be used for packaging. Since it was not an easily accesible product, I substituted it for 100 lb card stock layered with mod podge, a non-toxic, water-resistant top coat to coat the inside of my packaging.

GECKO TOES Gecko Toes are made up of pads with numerous hairs that creates tractition much like velcro. Similarly, I used the same concept of adhesion and emulated the velcro like quality with glue dots to create a resealable packaging for MI RICE and created an opening that could be folded and rolled down and sealed .


BAMBOO WHAT IT IS

Bamboo is a tall woody plant that is part of the grass family with various traditional uses. The structure of bamboo consists of sturdy hollow stems connected together at cross sections. It is the fastest growing plant in the world and can grow over 90cm a day.

PROPERTIES

The fibers of bamboo are found to be a naturally resistant and resilient fiber due to their long, fiber-reinforcing composites. These mesh of fibers create a strong resilient material that resists compressing and bending. Bamboo fibers are naturally tough and have an excellent carrying capacity. When bamboo is harvested, new shoots will continue to grow without a need for additional planting and cultivation making bamboo a renewable resource.

DESIGN APPLICATION

Due to its structure, bamboo is an optimal medium for building structures and packaging materials. Due to its renewability, bamboo is not only an ideal material to use but also a sustainable resource that can be quickly replenished and recycled.

SALVINA MOLESTA WHAT IT IS

The Salvina Molesta otherwise known as a floating fern is a weed that clogs up waterways in various parts of the Americas and Australia. It has eggbeater-shaped (whisk) hairs that store air which keeps the weed afloat on a watery surface.

PROPERTIES

In addition to having dense egg-beater shaped hairs, the tips of these hairs are sticky and hydrophobic. The ferns float on top of the water surface in large clumps. The Salvina Molesta is very sustainable since it is actually a problematic hazard in pipes and other waterways.

DESIGN APPLICATION

Together, the salvina molesta’s ability to trap air and affinity towards water keep the weed afloat. The unique egg-beater shaped hairs can be used to create a new waterproof material that can be used industrially and commercially. The waterproof coating could be especially useful in creating packaging for foods that are sensitive to moisture.

GECKO TOES WHAT IT IS

Gecko toes have pads covered with layers called lamellae. Lamellae are covered with tiny hairs otherwise known as setae. Each of these hairs splits into numerous branches with spatula shaped tips.

PROPERTIES

The large number of branches creates a vast amount of surface area which creates a very strong adhesive force. The tiny hairs are made of b-Keratin which is a natural and versatile substance that not only can stick onto any surface but also detach without leaving a trace

DESIGN APPLICATION

This sticky residue from gecko toes could be used as a sustainable adhesive in product packaging. This adhesive can be re-used without the need to an opposing side like Velcro. It would be extremely useful in storing bags of food that need to be resealed.

LOGO

In the beginning, I was very inspired by the deep Asian cultural tradition and history behind a bowl of rice. I wanted to create a logo that is clean and modern but grounded in its cultural heritage. I was particularly inspired by ancient Chinese ink stamps and modeled my logo to emulate the look and feel of a traditional stamp. To emulate the stamp I added a “stamp” texture to soften the sterile quality of the vector shapes in the logo. ¬

MI RICE’s name originates from the Chinese character for rice which is pronounced “mi” (like me). Since MI RICE is directed to a diverse audience I wanted to keep the name versatile and not too culturally specific, hence the addition of the word “rice”. Additionally “MI” when pronounced aloud can be used and understood interchangeably as “me” implicating the customizable aspect of MI RICE and it’s convenience to consumers.

After coming up with a central concept for MI RICE as a brand I explored various aspects of the stamp concept. It was a challenge to incorporate both a very modern type and a artistic rendering of a traditional Chinese character into one cohesive and harmonious logo.

Since the final logo has many different components, it does not size down well. For any logo use smaller than the height of 1.5 inches a typographic logo will be used. Although the typographic logo does not include a stamped texture, the stamp-like quality is achieved through a thin white border which is another notable characteristic of stamps.

Although I created many iterations of the initial logo, the original logo was the one I chose to use as my final. In comparison to the intermediate logos, the final logo is simpler with a minimal use of other designs to make the name “MI RICE” and the Chinese character stand out. The final logo features an artistic rendering of the Chinese character for rice “mi” with the brand name on the right side in a standard 2-column format seen in many traditional Chinese seals. A dark teal was chosen in place of the traditional red to streamline the logo and keep it versatile and modern.

There are two main colors used for MI RICE shown in the first column. The first color ( dark blue) will be used primarily for the logo. The second column of colors reveals the palette for the four different flavors MI RICE offers.

The design of the letter focuses on simplicity, only focusing on the key branding elements such as the logo and stamped graphic. The back of the letter is always CMYK (88,62,62,63) with a full bleed overlay of the stamp graphic. BRANDING DIRECTION For branding applications, MI RICE utilizes strong tag-lines with bold, simple typography for a bold statement. Since branding is targeting a young, modern consumer with a busy lifestyle, the marketing style reflects the target market by being minimal and concise.

ADVERTISEMENTS For billboards and advertisements, a minimalist typographic approach is taken to capture the viewer’s attention. Slogans such as “just me, mi rice, and I” are used in high traffic areas to leave a lasting impression and give more exposure to the brand “MI RICE”.

MI RICE’s website retains the brand’s minimalist approach and is both simple and user-friendly. Anyone who is interested in learning more about MI RICE’s product and/or the company can visit http://www.mirice.om to learn more. MI RICE will not have an app but there is a mobile adaptation of the desktop website that is very user-friendly and simple to use to make information about MI RICE more accesible.


MERCHANDISE T-Shirts with catchy slogans using the brand’s name “MI RICE” may be sold. T-Shirts can also be given away during promotions and events to gain more exposure and popularity.

PACKAGING


SKETCHES

Taking biomimicry literally, initially MI RICE was to be packaged in a real bamboo tube with a label sleeve around it. Since rice was cooked in bamboo in ancient China, bamboo seemed to be the logical biomimicry in which to model the packaging after.

ITERATIONS Moving away from an actual bamboo tube, the new iterations began to emulate the structural shape of bamboo with added functionality of foldable packaging. The packaging evolved into an octogon based paper tube that can be microwaved and a waterproof material inspired by salvina molesta that allows the packaging to be flexible.

Inspired by the structural qualities of bamboo, initial ideas were to package MI RICE into bamboo tubes as not only to mimic nature but also as a historical reference. Eventually, the packaging was designed into a folded sack that expands into a cylinder to be a more practical solution for an on-the-go product that is marketed as convenient and instant.

Structurally, MI RICE’s packaging is minimally designed to fit on one sheet of paper with zero scrap waste during construction. There are four sides to the sack that all have creases down the center creating eight sides and allowing the packaging to “inflate” and become a bowl once opened. The bottom is created by strips folded into one another on the bottom for simple construction with zero waste and structural stability. The chopstick holders are cut from extra strips of paper on the bottom strip of the layout. Dimensions: 8.5 x 11 inches ( not real packaging colors)

The final layout is designed on a 8.5 x11 sheet of paper designed to be assembled into a portable fold top sack that is sealed with chopsticks. The chopsticks can be used as a clamp to reseal the package once opened. Moreover, the chopsticks add to the convenience factor of MI RICE by providing a utensil incorporated into the packaging for immedeate consumption. Once heated and opened, the packaging expands into more of a cylindrical shape and acts as a bowl to eat out from.

To make MI RICE stand out among the sea of products, MI RICE’s labeling design focuses on creating a label that complements the logo while giving the brand a more fun and modern vibe. The use of colors with their respective illustrations for each flavor not only makes the packaging more eye-catching but also makes it understandable for the consumer to distinguish the flavor. Even though the main color of the logo is replaced, the graphics throughout the packaging are the same and still effectively maintain a cohesive brand identity.

ASSEMBLY The final packaging was printed on 100lb cardstock in place water-proof packaging made from salvina molesta. The front panels are slightly curved while the side panels are creased to fold in. When opened the front and back panels expand when the side panels are popped out. There are perforation marks on the side to further fold out the packaging for easier access. The resealable material from gecko toes is emulated through the use of glue dots at the mouth of the package.

The components of the final packaging include, reusable chopsticks, recyclable chopstick holders on both ends of the packaging to hold the chopsticks in place and the recyclable pouch for the product.

INTRODUCTION MI RICE is intended to introduce a simple and common preparation of rice in Asian cultures to a western audience. MI RICE is convenient gourmet instant rice that is perfect for a busy on-the-go lifestyle. It is great alternative to fast food and processed instant food. The designer is responsible for creating a strong brand identity and graphic standard for MI RICE while also researching the best packaging style and materials to be utilized.

PROBLEM

METHODOLOGY YEAR ONE : LOCAL GROCERS MI RICE will first be distributing to local grocers on the west coast. MI RICE sale associates will be providing samples and promotional materials such as t-shirts to consumers during the first week of distribution in each grocery market. The MI RICE team will consist of sales associates, chefs, and factory workers. In the infant stage, MI RICE will rely heavily on the power of social media to gain popularity and presence in the industry.

STATEMENT

MI RICE offers a healthy alternative to the plethora of processed, fast food in the market today. MI RICE is a convenient on-the-go meal or a satisfying quick meal at home. With wholesome organic ingredients and two vegan flavors, MI RICE caters to a wide variety of diets and promotes a healthy lifestyle even for those who are always on the go. Instead of resorting to fast foods filled with all sorts of processed ingredients, the goal is to choose MI RICE.

EVALUATION In order to track our progress closely and guarantee that we hit all our objectives, MI RICE will be holding weekly meetings to discuss progress and the next step to take. Each team (sales, marketing, product development, logistics) will each prepare a report and a suggestion for the next step forward at every meeting. To get data from our consumers, surveys will be given out by the sales associates during promotional schedules and posted on MI RICE’s social media sites. The data collected will be evaluated by our logistics and statistics team all of whom have a strong business background and will help MI RICE determine the nest best step to take in order to stay on track.

YEAR TWO : GROCERY CHAINS + ONLINE STORE By the second year, MI RICE will have shelf space on major retailers such as Whole Foods and Sprouts. Mi RICE will fit right into this sector as it offers a wholesome delicious meal ready in minimal time. Due to popular demand, MI RICE will launch their online store and make MI RICE commercially available online. In order to be able to sustain an online store, MI RICE will enlarge their factory facilities and hire a team to manage the online store and online distribution.

YEAR THREE: WIDE DISTRIBUTION + LINE EXPANSION

MI RICE’s first objective will be gaining shelf space on small local groceries in its first year. As the brand builds and the product becomes more popular, MI RICE hopes to be able to distribute to larger chain grocers, aiming especially for the “health-food” and higher end grocers such as Whole Foods by the end of the second year. By the end of the second year we hope to hit most of the west coast’s specialty grocery stores and expand our line by making MI RICE available online. In MI RICE’s third year, new flavors will be released based on two years of consumer feedback and MI RICE will be made available at college campuses to offer a healthful alternative to fast food.

The next goal is to further distribute to college campuses such as UC Davis, where MI RICE could be carried at café’s in the campus as a healthful alternative. MI RICE provides convenient wholesome food that will sustain college students through their hectic schedules. To target campuses, MI RICE will send sale representatives to potential campuses that stress healthy, sustainable eating such as UC Davis. As the company stabilizes and lays a strong foundation, there is enough feedback from the consumers that chefs at MI RICE can create new flavors that cater to consumer tastes.

MI RICE is confident that our gourmet instant rice will be well received especially with a rise of more health-conscious consumers. MI RICE transforms what is commonly thought of as a side dish into the base of a meal by incorporating flavorful unique ingredients. Based on ample research, we are confident that MI RICE will be a successful niche in the market that will stand out against the other instant foods that are highly processed. While we have big dreams for MI RICE, we realize that our approach should be gradual therefore MI RICE will be distributed locally on the west coast before branching out to larger franchises like Whole Foods. This ensures we have enough time to build a stable foundation for the business and a strong company culture to support our growth corporately. Overall MI RICE looks forward to promoting a healthy lifestyle in the midst of a busy schedule by providing a convenient pre-cooked meal of rice and wholesome flavors that will satisfy your taste buds.
