MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

President James Owen

W

hat an exciting time for QPS sportsmen and women. On May the 19th the Firies have laid down a stair climbing challenge to the QPS and have even started trash talking us. They have bought a trophy and without a step being taken are claiming the bragging rights. If you want to take up the challenge in the Climb for the cure contact me and I will help find you a team. Just as exciting are the forthcoming Queensland Police and Emergency Services Games coming up in September of this year. We will be running all of our usual events and once again Super Saturday will be up and running. We will have all the sporting events, the jumping castle, the rock climbing wall, sno-cones the kids triathlon and much, much more. This will be a great day out for the entire family. When entries open don’t hesitate. Finally we are already starting our planning

for the Queensland attendance at the 2014 Australasian Police and Emergency Games being held in March 2014 at Melbourne. This promises to be a great event, take a holiday, take the family, get fit and have fun. We will help organise team uniforms, travel, accommodation and transport to and from your events. I can’t wait for all of these events, hopefully I will see many of you and your families there too. All the best.

James Owen President Qld Police Sporting Association

Message From The Games Manager It’s Games Time again

T

he Queensland Police and Emergency Services Games are on again. They are scheduled from 21st to 28th September 2013 and majority of sports are being held around the Brisbane area. With 40 sports on offer, there is definitely something for everyone. 2013 will also see the introduction of two new sports, table tennis and Oztag, and the return of the adult Triathlon and Aquathon. You can compete in individual events or organise your workmates or family and register in one of the many team events including beach volleyball, netball, soccer, basketball or hockey. This year the Qld Police Academy will again host ‘Super Saturday’ on the 21st September 2013. Some of the events conducted on this day include Aquathon, Basketball, Bench Press, Touch football, Oztag, Greatest Athlete and Martial Arts to name a few. This provides an opportunity to compete in more than one sport or cheer on your friends. Touch Football will also be conducted in Townsville for our Northern competitors.

The games are open to all current serving and retired Police, Ambulance, Fire, Customs, Corrections and other Law Enforcement and Emergency Service employees and their immediate families. So come along and have some fun and healthy competition. Registrations will open in July. Further details and a full list of sports will be available shortly on our newly developed website. For more information, contact Rebecca Dale on 0424 152 229 or email Dale.RebeccaE@police.qld.gov.au.

Clay Target Shooting Clay Target Shooting

E

ighteen shooters from the Queensland Police Clay Target Club (QPCTC) travelled to the nation’s capital in March 2013 to compete in the Australasian Police and Services National Skeet and Trap Championships (the Nationals). The Nationals, which were shot over three days on 22, 23 and 24 March, attracted a field of more than ninety shooters from most Australian states to contest the 2013 event. The competition is conducted in two sections: a Police and Services section (for police, emergency and military services) and a Civilian section and this year’s event saw many shooters in both groups.

both sections of the Nationals. The QPCTC is a committed promoter of junior shooting throughout Queensland and sponsors Junior High Gun events in at least 9 clubs across the state, to encourage and properly train junior shooters.

The QPCTC members, who include current and former Police officers and staff members from across the state and also a number of club sponsors, were able to compete across the entire range of events in

In the Nationals, a medal is awarded for each grade winner in both Police (and Services) and also for the civilian shooters. In addition, a ‘sash’ is awarded to the best shooter in each event.

7

Clay Target Cont.. All the Nationals events were shot over 50 targets, with the exception of the last event (Champion of Champions) which was shot out of a total of 60 targets. The Queenslanders arrived in town a couple of days before the event so they could do a bit of sightseeing and more importantly, visit the National Police Memorial. For most of the team it was their first visit to this very important memorial and everyone had a moment of quiet reflection at that very distinctive memorial. The team also visited the Australian War Memorial and were once again reminded of the ultimate sacrifice made by many Australians in past and current conflicts. The Nationals got underway on Friday 22 March on a cool, windy and drizzly morning after a spectacular overnight electrical storm, with the first event being the ever challenging 50 targets of Skeet. Unfortunately the team didn’t start off too well (too much ‘sightseeing’ the previous night perhaps) and none of the team made it to the winner’s podium. Nevertheless, Steve Steenstrup (Sgt, Dog Squad) scored the team’s best with 44/50.

The second event saw the competitors back on the skeet fields for the difficult 25 pair skeet doubles. Like all skeet events, only one shot is allowed at each target, but in doubles a shooter is presented with two targets each time. The varying winds and light drizzle made it hard for all those present and low scores were shot across the board, with very few worth bragging about. However, Brian “Wingy” Murison (Sgt Rockhampton) started the medal count for the team, collecting 2nd in C grade with a respectable 43/50. The first day of competition finished with the first trap event of the Nationals, the 50 target handicap which is shot, depending on a shooters grade, at anything from 15 to 25 metres back from the trap house. Don Mabbutt (Insp. MSR) convincingly out-shot the rest of the Queenslanders (and just about everyone else) with a commanding display of handicap trap shooting under the windy conditions. Don finished off the event in a shoot off for overall second, beating local favourite and AFP officer, Matt Dwyer in the process. (Editor note – I think I know who wrote the article)

9

Clay Target Cont.. D

ay two, Saturday, dawned sunny and fine and started with the shooters lining up for the popular 50 target Double Barrel, which is where a ‘possible’ 50/50 is nearly always needed to be competitive. Richard Wilde (AO2 Upper Mt Gravatt) got them all and lined up for the shoot off with 8 other shooters for the overall prize in the Police and Services section. He gave a very good account of himself and pulled through to secure 2nd in AA grade. In B grade, team members Don Mabbutt and Dean Baird (QFRS, Southport) both topped the Police and Services section and entered a three way shoot off for 1st and 2nd in the grade. Don was quickly out of contention, but Dean persevered for an eventual well deserved 2nd place.

is a three shooter team event decided from prenominated teams. The Queenslanders won the trophy this year for the first time since 2010, with team members Richard Wilde, Don Mabbutt and Steve Steenstrup beating all the other teams and collecting the sashes and trophy in a well deserved and long overdue win for Queensland. 50 targets of Single Barrel was the 2nd event of the day and this difficult match quickly sorted out the shooters with 1st in AA Grade going to Viv Nolan (retired, Toowoomba) after a closely contested shoot off. Jim Molloy also hit the mark with 43/50 in A grade, which put him into a 4 way shoot off for the grade. Despite a good start, Jim didn’t last the distance though and didn’t make it to the end.

Jim Molloy (team sponsor, Cloncurry), shot a very respectably 49/50 in the Civilian section in A grade, but unfortunately was beaten in a three way shoot off, after coming in behind the other two shooters.

B grader Chris Lawson (Det.S/C, Kingaroy CIB), also made his way to the podium for 1st in B grade after shooting a very competitive 47/50 shot under the very windy conditions encountered during the afternoon.

The Double Barrel event also forms the basis for the highly contested Australian National Police Trapshooting Team Championship, which

Saturday afternoon’s presentations saw even more prizes going north of the border, with the Queenslanders winning all three prizes in the raffle,

11

Clay Target Cont.. Steenstrup who shot 97/100 to win the event outright and take the sash. Vic Tipman then made it to the podium again for first in AA grade after a exciting three way shoot off against Glen ‘Wal’ Durrie (ret. Gympie) and another shooter after an initial score of 96/100. Then Tim Misson cleaned up in A grade with an unbeaten 94/100 to complete the Queenslanders nearly total domination in the higher grades of this event.

which was completely unexpected as we all thought that it would be rigged. Gary Brown (Sgt, Wondai) and Scott Prendergast (Det. Sgt, Kingaroy CIB) were particularly happy for the chance to collect their prizes as they were the only things they would win over the whole three days. Fortunately for them, Chris Lawson also won a raffle prize and was able to show them the way to the podium to collect theirs. A foggy Sunday morning greeted shooters for the final day of the Nationals with the fog burning off during the first event, the 50 target Point Score. In Points every missed target results in 3 points being taken off a shooters possible score of 150 and using a second shot loses 1 point. Vic Tipman (ret. Gympie) shot well enough and then contested a shoot off to come 2nd in AA grade. The run of Queenslanders in shoot offs for the event continued with Tim Misson (Sgt, Barcaldine) competing in a lengthy shoot off in A grade with Tim eventually collecting a well deserved 2nd in the grade. The final event of the Nationals, the 60 target Champion of Champions, consists of 20 targets Double Barrel, 20 targets Single Barrel and 20 targets Point Score, and is all shot from the challenging distance of 18 metres from the trap house. The windy conditions made it difficult for many of the shooters, but even so a number Queenslanders shot very well, starting with Steve

Once again one of the Queenslanders, Steve Turner (Team sponsor, Sunshine Coast) picked up a prized in the raffle and the four bottles of wine he won got the team on to a good start for the final night of ‘sightseeing’. The annual team over fifties versus the under fifties (a politically incorrect concept if there ever was one) saw the over fifties take the cup with a close but decisive victory by less than less than half a percent. Glen ‘Wal’ Durre, who is in his seventies and has been retired (and reckons he is half blind in one eye) outshot everyone else in the team to win coveted ‘QPCTC Queensland Team National High Gun’ shield, which is awarded for being the best trap shooter in the Queensland team, which he achieved with his very impressive 375/400. A good time was had by all during the 6 days and five nights we had in the ACT and Queanbeyan and everyone is looking forward to next year’s Nationals which are being held in Bendigo, Victoria and to getting together again to break a few targets for Queensland. Many thanks to our sponsors who make this event possible, Virgo Funeral Services, Ransen Timber Company, Central Hotel Cloncurry, Platinum Properties – Sunshine Coast, CWB Plumbing, Royal Hotel Childers, Bank of Queensland – Kingaroy, Jim Hayne Real Estate, Funeral Transport Services Australia, Queensland Police Union of Employees, Queensland Police Sporting Association, Kingaroy Freight Express, Astill’s Electrical and Ollies Mower Service.

Super Saturday Super Saturday 2012

S

uper Saturday 2012 was the fourth time this event has been held. Super Saturday first took its name from the Queensland Police Games in 2009 when 11 events from those Games were held simultaneously at the Queensland Police Service Academy. The events included in a Games year include squash, touch footy, greatest athlete, indoor soccer, obstacle course challenge, martial arts, bench press/push pull, indoor rowing, basketball 3on 3, aquathon and swimming. As part of the celebration of events we also had carnival land amusements to set up their usual entertainment. These included a rock climbing wall, slippery slides, jumping castles, and snow cones for the kids. Nearly 500 people attended this years events. As an out of games year a smaller number of events

were held. The touch footy attracted 8 teams in 2012 of which 5 of those were from recruit groups. The other three were from Amalgamated (a combination of old timers including Lester Brookes and Mark Ruggeri) and the Dog squad run by Ash Purvey and DTU run by James Owen. As predicted the top two teams (Amalgamated and Dog Squad) were in the final. After a close fought game Amalgamated won 5-2. The indoor soccer was run by Gary Tobin and

15

Super Saturday Cont.. Barry Smith, they also attracted 6 teams. With only one court and a round robin event conducted teams played 7 minutes games with for and against extremely important. Eventual winners were ‘Badheads” from Beenleigh. The kids triathlon proved a massive hit once again. Jimmy Owen had nearly 70 competitors on the starting line this time round. Three waves of competitors was the right call. There were kids everywhere and parents making sure everything was ready for their big event. The under 8’s attracted the most competitors with nearly 40 little tikes swimming 1 lap, riding 1km and running down to the oval to complete the distance. The 9yr-11yr’s had to swim 50m, ride approximately 2 km and then run down to the oval to complete a lap before finishing. The over 11’s had to swim 100m, ride 3km and then cover 2 laps of the oval. All the kids will certainly be back next year as this was a fantastic event and lots of fun. The final event on this calender was the basketball

17

Super Saturday Cont.. 3 0n 3 run by Gavin DeLaCruz. He managed to have a combination of children and adults from wherever he could grab them. Some from his own Western Magic heartland and recruits made up the numbers. Plenty of fun was the order of the day. Well done to all co-ordinators and QPSA committee members who assisted on the day. This event proves to be hit every year and promises to grow bigger and better. The next Super Saturday will be incorporated as part of the 2013 Police and Emergency Services Games, and is scheduled to be held on Saturday 21st September 2013 at the Qld Police Academy, Oxley. Come along and see what all the fun is about.

Queensland Crocs 2012 Australian Rules

A

fter the vast improvements made in the Queensland Crocs squad during 2010 and 2011, the team travelled to this year’s National Police Football Carnival in Tasmania full of hope. Unfortunately for the Crocs, the absence of a few key players from the last two years combined with a brutal injury toll left the side short on numbers and up against it from the outset. The Crocs opened their carnival with a tight-loss to a much improved Tasmanian side, before losing to New South Wales on Wednesday in Game two. A third loss to eventual carnival champions, South Australia, on Friday was inevitable given the heavy injury toll of the week but the side showed incredible heart and courage to give a spirited contest throughout.

Despite the difficulties on field, the week was enjoyed by a large travelling squad of over 30 members from areas across the state including some from as wide ranging as Normanton, Crows Nest and Kingaroy. Highlights from the trip included a superhero afternoon during Wednesday’s “Legends Match” including a half-time sprint, the awarding of the 2012 Mankini to Justin Allen following an intense 10-pin bowling bowl off, and the final function featuring guest speakers Peter Hudson (former Hawthorn legend) and Brett Geeves (Tasmanian cricket representative). The Crocs welcomed a number of new faces this year who each brought quality on-field and off-field contributions to the trip. Justin Allen, Jarrod McIvor, Tyler Matchett, Duane Amos were particularly strong across each game, while Jamie Hall and Jacob

21

AFL Cont... Nobbs had breakout games against South Australia. Returning players Chris and Nick Collins, Beau Tanton, Karl Wood, Brad Rantall and Brett Price all had strong carnivals. Kayne Nund was exceptional across all three games with his hard running and tenacity at the football unmatched. Not surprisingly Kayne Nund was announced as the back-to-back winner of the Queensland Player of the Carnival, while Karl Wood received the Players’ Player Award. Both players were worthy recipients of the All-Australian Team selection. All players enjoyed the trip with the committee of Darryn Parkes, Stewart Manning, Bradley Wilson, Brendon Carr and Daryl Stephenson (and co.) doing a superb job in organising the off-field aspects.

23

The Crocs are looking forward to seeing an even greater injection of youth in New South Wales this year at the 2013 carnival to help supplement a group of evergreen, but ageing, veterans. As always the week would not have been possible if not for the generous contributions of sponsors which included in 2012: RemSERV, A & M Logistics, Sciaccas Lawyers, the Queensland Police Union, Kooga and the Queensland Police Sporting Association.

The Crocs are always on the lookout for new players and supporters. Any person interested in joining the Crocs can do so by emailing any of the Crocs committee: President - Stewart Manning (SCOC) Secretary - Brendan Carr (SER) Treasurer - Daryl Stephenson (OSC) Committee Members - Darryn Parkes (NCR) and Brad Wilson (NCR) Football Operations Manager – Bradley Rantall (SCOC)

Firies Vs Cops in the battle to the top!

Heroes battle to the top

I

t will be the showdown of the year when the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) battle the Queensland Police Service (QPS) in the ultimate heights challenge, Climb for Cancer on 19 May 2013. There is strong competition between the teams; both want to come out on top at the Climb for Cancer stair race. QPS Inspector and President of the Queensland Police Sporting Association, James Owen met Acting Inspecting Richard Gorey for a pre-race meeting and explained why they were getting involved. Inspector Owen said he was looking forward to taking on the Firies. “Both the police and the firies have a strong emphasis

www.climbforcancer.org.au on health and well-being and Climb for Cancer was a great way to ignite some healthy competition between the two departments,” Inspector Owen said. QFRS Acting Inspector Richard Gorey, explained that four firies will be wearing full gear on the day. “They will be running all 810 stairs in full gear. This includes full personal protective equipment (PPE); pants, jacket, helmet and breathing apparatus – adding an extra 25 kilograms to their load.” There was plenty of competitive banter and heckling at the pre-race meeting. QPS’s Inspector Owen joked, “What do you call a fit fireman… retired”. QFRS’s Acting Inspector Gorey bit back by teasing, “If you can’t handle the heat, join the police”.

25

Firies Vs Cops Cont... Both teams have been training hard in a bid to reach the top first. You can also climb alongside our state’s heroes on Saturday 19 May, if you want to take part in this challenge contact Inspector Owen via e-mail and he will organise a team for you wherever possible, or you can enter your own team via the climb for the cure website at www. climbforcancer.org.au This will be a great event and a lot of fun, if you want to raise money for cancer and get fit at the same time you will not find a better event. The event comprises a 37 storey or 810 step race to the top of Waterfront Place in the Brisbane CBD. As this is a fund raising event there is an entry fee of $50.00 per individual or $200.00 per team. The Police Sporting Association will provide a team racing shirt for all police competitors who let us know they have entered. They will supply the running shirts on the morning of the event.

Australia and New Zealand Police Cricket Championships 2012

R

ecently the Queensland Police Cricket Association hosted the Australia and New Zealand Police Cricket Championships (ANZPCC) on the Gold Coast. The carnival was held at the Gold Coast District Cricket Club between 10 – 16 November 2012. Teams from New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and New Zealand attended the week long carnival. The carnival included a welcome function, 5 full days of cricket and a formal closing function. The carnival was attended by 120 current and former serving police officers and staff members. At the conclusion of each carnival the ANZPCC Merit Team is selected. Shane Connors of Logan Central Station was Queensland’s sole representative and capped off a successful week. Shane’s highlights were 52 not out and 2/18 versus S.A. and 3/31 versus W.A. Several other highlights of the carnival were from

Paul Bonney of Carina, 113 versus Victoria which consisted of eighteen 4’s and two 6’s in a 55 ball innings, Ray Atkinson 90 versus NSW and 54 not out versus S.A. as well as five catches for the carnival. A guest appearance by current Bull’s and Sydney Sixers cricketer Luke Feldman had the dirty Vic’s jumping around. Luke finished with figures of 1/20 off 9 overs, but more importantly he claimed 6 bruised Victorians. At the conclusion of the carnival, New Zealand were too strong for the rest. A team consisting of seven current first grade players made the dad’s army teams from Australia pay for lack of skill, ability and talent. This was New Zealand’s first title and well deserved. Queensland and New Zealand have a very healthy and competitive respect for each other and this is reflected in the establishment of the Memorial Trophy. A trophy struck by New Zealand to reflect the camaraderie and spirit shown between the two teams. The trophy won by New Zealand at this

carnival, is made from debris of the Christchurch earthquake. A symbol of resilience, determination, mateship and commitment to the community and each other. The wood in the trophy is from the Catholic Cathedral and the brick is from The Press Building, both were severely damaged whilst the blue glass reflects the Queensland floods of 2010 and 2011. Both events showed the true spirit of policing and helping the community, with police putting others before themselves. During the formal dinner at the conclusion of the carnival three Queenslanders were awarded Life Membership of the ANZPCC, Brett Hutton, Matt Gill and Ray Atkinson. They join Queensland’s only other Life Member Colin Frederick Harvey. There are strict criteria for being nominated for this award and it is based on dedication, commitment

and involvement in the ANZPCC. This award is voted on by the ANZPCC Council. These four have been involved as players, administrators, managers and committee members for over a decade. Congratulations gentlemen! Thanks must go to the organising committee who worked tirelessly over the past 18 months to make the carnival seamless. The committee consisted of current serving officers Ray Atkinson, Brett Hutton, Phillip Bell and Brett Price as well as former officer Matt Gill. A special mention must go to Matt who runs his business, MCG Legal, on the Gold Coast. Matts dedication to cricket and this carnival came to the fore with his organising of grounds, sponsors and functions. The rest of the committee is based in Brisbane and would not have been able to provide such a professional event without Matt’s local

knowledge and contacts.

Cricket Gold Coast and Jupiters Hotel and Casino.

Final thanks must go to sponsors and supporters of the carnival. Sponsorship by the Queensland Police Sporting Association and the QPCU, which has been a partnership for over a decade, is greatly appreciated. New partner MCG Legal came on board this carnival. Support from Kookaburra, Talisman Apartments,

The next ANZPCC will be held in Auckland, New Zealand in February 2015. Any player enquiries or interest please direct to Brett Hutton, City CIB or Ray Atkinson SIB

Table Tennis Introducing Table Tennis

Brad Rantall Club President The Mighty Fighting Roosters Table Tennis Club

I

n 2012 a question was posed over a few beers…. what Olympic sport is still available to the average Joe, a sport that doesn’t demand a high level of fitness yet still required skill, patience, speed and tactics? Tough question I hear you think – well the answer was Table Tennis! So after a lot more beer and conversation, some interesting facts were discovered. Table tennis is a great game that requires very little pre-season training, no industrial strength weights program, and can be played in rain, hail or sunshine. There are no age or gender barriers and it’s a noncontact, competitive sport that has minimal impact on your body. There has even been a rumour or 2 about this sport helping you lose weight…. Most importantly, it’s a sport that can be enjoyed by the entire family, from the youngest of children through to those in their twilight years. With all this in mind, and a few more beers later, the QPS Table Tennis Club, who shall be henceforth known as ‘the Mighty Fighting Roosters’ was born with the view of getting like minded people together to enjoy a game of table tennis or two, and perhaps even one day getting a team together to compete in the 2015 World Police and Fire Games in Fairfax County, Virginia. Its now your time to get involved ! The Club is looking for new members to participate in monthly

social competitions at the Brisbane Table Tennis Association located at 86 Green Tce, Windsor. We play once a month between 10am and 12pm Tuesday mornings and not to worry if you don’t have the equipment for a hit as it’s all available for hire. If you’re interested in coming down for a game or two please email the Club President Brad Rantall.

N

ow for some even more exciting news…. The first ever Queensland State Titles will be played at this years 2013 Qld Police and Emergency Service Games. Our competition day will be on Wednesday 25th of September, starting at 10am. There will be all the traditional singles and doubles events for both guys and girls and a few other old favourites. Who will carry off our first State Champion title? We will even have a family section, parent and child category as well as a kids division. Once the battles have come to an end and the sledging is getting closer to finishing, come join the crew and embellish all you accomplished during the day at the presentation ceremony over a few drink. Further details about this event will be made available shortly.
