F
irstly, I would like to introduce myself to those who do not know who I am. My name is Rebecca Dale, I am a Sergeant currently working at the Constable Development Section at the Oxley Academy. I have been a member of the Queensland Police Sporting Association since 1991 and have been a committee member since 2002. Over the last couple of years I have held the position of Vice President, however, at the recent AGM in March, I was elected as President.

GAMES MANAGER Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games - Melbourne 2014
P
icturesque Melbourne was the backdrop for the Australasian Police & Emergency Services Games which was held in April this year. Qld Police were represented by approximately 178 members, and this year we also welcomed along Qld Correctional Officers who were attending their first Games. In true Melbourne style, the opening ceremony was held along the banks of the Yarra River, accompanied by Police boats, helicopters, horses and motorbikes, and of course a very cold blustering wind which chilled us all to the bone. There was only one thing that could happen‌.it could get warmer.
T
he Games commenced and so did the fun, laughter, sweat and tears. There were some remarkable sporting triumphs and achievements. We attempted to obtain all the results for the Qld Competitors, however sincerely apologise to any person/s who may not be included below.

AQUATHON
N
ow one has to wonder why perfectly sane people would jump into the ocean in the very cold conditions experienced in Melbourne‌..To win Gold and Silver for Qld, that’s why.
Trent Stanyer won a Gold Medal. Janelle Poole won Gold . Bernadette Strow won Silver, close behind her travel and training companion Janelle. Graeme Paterson also won Silver. Great effort by all.

TRACK AND FIELD
A
big super congratulations for our track and field competitors. Not only did we collect 14 gold, 7 silver and 2 bronze, but Sophie Gorbacz cleaned up with a record in the 100 metre sprint at her first ever Australasian Games. We are all so very proud of your effort. Other great efforts were:
Deb Mc Lachlan won 4 gold in the100 mtrs, 200 mtrs, 800 mtrs, and the Toughest Competitor Alive. Sophie Gorbacz won 3 gold in the 100 mtrs, 200 mtrs and 400 mtrs. Josh Piper won gold in the shot put, and silver in the discus. Matthew Van Beek won 2 gold in the javelin and long jump, and silver in the triple jump and 400 mtrs. Matthew Gartrell won gold in the high jump, silver in the javelin and long jump and bronze in the 800 mtrs. Qld Fire Officer Aidan Murray won gold in the discus, silver in high jump and bronze in the triple jump. Mark Lawton won gold in the 3000 mtr walk. And lastly a very impressive performance by Retired QPS Officer Ray Riethmuller who won 2 gold in the 100mtr and 200mtr sprint and silver in the 400mtr. Ray competed in the 70 – 74 yr age group. Well done.
FUTSAL
2014 saw our first female team entered into the futsal. After these girls had slogged it out for days on the soccer field they backed up to win the silver medal. Well done ladies and let’s hope that the gold medal is yours in 2016.
GOLF
For those who have travelled to the games before, you’d be more than aware that it is normally the first sport that is booked out with a very competitive field. This year Qld saw great success on the golf course. All players performed extremely well and the following collected medals.
Russell Jones won gold in the Men’s B Grade. Alan Lutter won bronze in the Men’s C Grade. Donna Kerr won 2 gold and a silver in the Women’s B Grade
Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games - Melbourne 2014
MARATHON
I
f anyone has ever run a marathon you would be fully aware of the preparation involved. I take my hat off to any athlete who attempts these events. This year we had three competitors who competed in the half marathon and 10k event. Although we were unsuccessful in attaining any medals, I believe their effort is certainly worth a mention.
Trent Stanyer came 7th in the half marathon in his age division. Mark Lawton also came 7th in the half marathon in his age division. Graeme Paterson came 5th in the 10k in his age division.
HOCKEY
W
ithout going into too much detail (see article also in this magazine), I can undoubtedly say that if there was ever a group of athletes who could play as hard on the field as they do off the field it would be the hockey players. This however did not just occur on one day‌..it was every day of the games. If there was a gold medal for partying, then these teams would win, hands down. I was lucky to witness a few of the hockey games and felt very proud to witness all three teams in the gold medal game. That in itself was an amazing effort well done.
Women’s won gold. Men won silver. Mixed won silver. 9

INDOOR ROWING The indoor rowing was held at the games hub over the final days of competition. Qld Police were strongly represented and were triumphant in many events. Our medal winners are: Bernadette Strow won gold. Janelle Poole won silver. Graeme Patterson won silver. Kim McCoomb won gold, silver and bronze. John McCoomb won gold, silver and bronze. Trent Stanyer won 2 gold.
SHOOTING
O
ur shooters had to travel out to Bendigo to the range. Although feeling isolated from the rest of the games, they certainly put in a great effort and once again did not let us down. (see article also in this magazine). Our medal winners were: Richard Wilde won 2 x gold, 1 x silver and 1 x bronze. Rob Guteridge won bronze. See our shooting article for complete round-up of event.
OPEN WATER SWIM
W t
OW!!! What a bunch of champions these athletes are. I ventured out early morning o transport some of our athletes to their open water swim event. It was freezing, windy and drizzling. Let me say, the conditions were ridiculous. Qld were represented by 3 wonderful athletes who had all travelled down from North Queensland, so I can tell you, they were certainly feeling the effects of the weather. These champions were: Ian ‘Kit’ Williams who won bronze. Graeme Patterson who came in 5th. Bernie Strow who also came in 5th in her first ever ocean swim – great job. www.qldpolicesport.com

SWIMMING
O
nce again, our swimmers lead the way in the pool and snatched many medals from their competitors. As you will see from the results, these athletes backed up again and again, well done. Our medal winners are as follows: Robyn Payne a remarkable 12 gold medals – excellent job Robyn. Terry Wendt won 2 silvers and 3 bronze. Trent Stanyer won gold. Ian Williams won 5 silver. John McCoomb won 2 gold. Trevor Wendt won 2 silver and 2 bronze.
TOUCH FOOTBALL
I
t appears over the years that the game of touch football has become faster and faster, yet the age of our Qld teams competing has gotten older and older. It certainly didn’t help either that the games were all played on Astroturf, so it felt like playing on concrete. Qld fielded both a mens and mixed team. The men played about 10 games of touch over two days and were narrowly defeated in the gold medal game, coming away with a silver medal. Great job. The mixed team played 8 games in one day. The average age of this team was 44yrs, which really made a difference when it came to the bronze medal game. The mixed were narrowly defeated coming in 4th overall. With only one male and one female sub, the legs just wouldn’t hold out any longer. This year’s John Weier Memorial Trophy was awarded to Debbie Harris-Taaffe for her continued dedication and commitment to the sport of touch football. Congratulations Debbie, this is a great honour to have.

SOCCER
T
his year the Qld Police fielded three teams in the soccer event, Open Mens, Over 40s Mens and Open Womens. (see article in this magazine). Unfortunately I was not able to witness any of the games, but certainly witnessed the soccer players afterwards. You could tell that they were putting in 100% effort into every game. Injuries and soreness was not going to hold them back. The overall results for our three teams were:
Open Mens won the bronze medal. Over 40s Mens won the silver medal. Open Womens came in 4th. Also see our Soccer article for detailed round-up.

QLD NIGHT
T
his year the Qld night was held at The Esplanade Hotel, St Kilda. From the amount of laughter and smiles, I’m sure everyone enjoyed themselves. This night is a great opportunity to meet other Qld competitors, and to hear the successes that had already been had. I must admit that when I stood up to make a small speech and announce the medals we had already won, I thought no one would even hear me, especially after a few brews had been consumed. This was one thing that I will certainly remember from the games. Everyone stayed quiet only cheering and clapping every time I announced a medal winner. Then a few words were said about our dear friend, colleague and committee member Sue Maxwell, who sadly passed away late last year. Every person in the room raised their glass and toasted Sue in what I believe would have touched her heart. One of the highlights of the Qld Night is the ‘Bite the Box’ challenge. Well, if you weren’t there, then you’ll have to come along to the next event to see what all the fuss is about. Personally, I think it’s about time an athlete other than a soccer player or hockey player won this event.

WRAP UP
T
he QPSA had been provided by Hummer Limousines with a voucher to the value of $1200. The QPSA committee agreed prior to the games that this would be awarded to one of our athletes. A unanimous decision was made to award this voucher to Russell Jones (Golf). Not only did Russell win a gold medal, he has attended numerous police games over the years and has represented Qld like a true sportsman. Well done Russell. We are sure you will attend your next event in true style.
T
he QPSA would also like to thank The Qld Police Union and The Qld Police Credit Union whose sponsorship is always welcomed and appreciated.
Lastly, don’t forget 2016 SUNSHINE COAST. This will be
‘our’ games. We have a lot to prove, whether it be retaining your gold medal position, or knocking off the team/competitor who beat you in these games. Keep training, keep playing and keep having fun.

Hockey Hockey Roundup
T
he Queensland Police (QPOL) hockey teams had a successful trip to the Melbourne Australasian Police and Emergency services games held in April at the Footscray Hockey fields. The Victoria Police put on a great tournament and a good time was had by all both on and off the field. It was a gruelling 5 days of hockey with some players playing 15 games during the tournament. There were 3 Queensland teams that travelled to Melbourne consisting of a Men’s, Women’s and a Mixed team. This year the Women were able to form a designated Queensland Women’s team which contained 11 Queensland players and 3 players from New South Wales. At times the opposing teams provided stiff competition with close score lines and all games were played in good spirit. Our old nemesis the Australian Federal Police (AFP) proved to be our no.1 rivals as usual and all 3 Grand finals saw QPOL playing AFP with the QPOL Women winning Gold and the Men’s and Mixed teams taking the Silver. It was an outstanding effort by all QPOL players and a great tournament was had with many good times shared, new friendships created and only a few injuries (turfitis). Continued on page 35

t the end of the games all team members were asked to vote for their Best and Fairest players for each team and the recipients were: Men – Kim “Beaver” Bevis, Women – Carolyn “Charlie” Margetts (NSW) and Mixed – Scott “Louie” Barton. Wednesday night was “Queensland” night which was held at the Esplanade “ESPY” Hotel, St Kilda and as usual the Hockey players dressed up!! The Bite the box Championship was held and unfortunately for us the Soccer Boys well Dom (reigning champion) came away with the win!!!!! Thank you to the Sporting Association for putting on another spectacular night at a great location. We all look forward to hosting the next Australasian Police and Emergency services games here in sunny Queensland on the Sunshine Coast in October 2016 with hockey being played at the Buderim fields and we hope that we can again put together some strong teams and hopefully knock of the AFP. On another note I would like announce that the Queensland Police Hockey Club (QPHC) which formed in the Brisbane Hockey association in 1974 and which currently has a team playing in the Brisbane Division 5 turf competition is celebrating 40 years this year and we are hoping to organise a function to mark this special occasion so stay tuned for further details!!!!

Shooting SHOOTING – BENDIGO
L
oddon District Police Trap Club hosted the 2014 Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games clay target events at the Bendigo Clay Target Club. Some 85 competitors took part in skeet, ACTA sporting and trap events. Gold, silver and bronze medals were on offer for Overall A, B and C grades in the skeet and sporting with AA being added for the trap events. There was also a team event being conducted in conjunction with the Double barrel. The Trap High Gun was fought out between Richard Wilde, Queensland, and Peter Beaman from Victoria. After 2 rounds in the shootoff, Richard was the proud owner of the gold medal with a great score of 170/175. Richard also backed up this great performance winning the AA Grade bronze medal in the 25 target point score with a score of 80/84. However, Richard was not finished winning medals at this stage as he then competed in the 25 target Single Barrel AA grade taking away the silver medal with a score of 30/33, and followed these performances with a brilliant effort winning yet another gold in the High Gun with another great score of 170/175.

Soccer Results
T
he Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games were held in Melbourne between the 18 -25 April 2014. There were 20 teams competing in the various categories for the field soccer, which included sides from New Zealand. The games were held at the Albert Park precinct with all the finals held at Lakeside Stadium. For the first time since the inception of the Queensland Police Soccer, we were able to send three (3) teams and field a side in each category which included open male, open female and an over 40’s. It was a gruelling week for all teams, were most teams played a minimum of 4-5 games, not including finals.
O
ur female team (The Heat), competed for the first time and the fact they were unluckily beaten in the bronze playoff was a fantastic achievement. They played some excellent games and came close to knocking off one of the goId medallist teams in their pool games, with a narrow 3 – 2 loss. I would like to personally thank Constable Kelly Humphries, Crestmead Police, for all of her efforts in organising the girls and if anyone observed them saw just how well decked out they were with strips and travelling gear etc. and they even had their own ‘coach’. Although I
must admit, I was getting tired just watching their pre match warm ups. They finally got some just reward though for their efforts, as they entered a side in the Futsal competition the day after, where they won a silver medal.
I
n the opens, the only side that beat them, was in the semifinals, against Victoria, which was played in arctic, pouring rain conditions. Obviously being from the ‘Sunshine State’ some of the boys just weren’t use to the conditions and probably put in their worst performance of the tournament (poor old Snapey was like a new born giraffe trying to stand on ice and Rohit, who normally wears a jumper when the temperature drops below 30 degrees, did not >
Results want to leave the sanctuary of the covered shelter on the side of the pitch). But seriously, there were numerous quality young boys in the side and the standard of football that was played by the side was very pleasing, with most people commenting on how well the side played. In my opinion they played the best football throughout but unfortunately prior to the commencement of the games we lost 3 players due to injury (that were not replaced). I honestly believe with the inclusion of those boys the result against the Vics may have been different. Again I would like to personally thank Senior Constable Justyn Laird, IPD Ipswich Patrol Group, for all of his efforts in looking after the boys and making sure they were safely tucked away in bed on most nights at a reasonable hour.
T
he over 40’s had the majority of the team that travelled to the previous games in NZ and again unfortunately were beaten by their nemesis Victoria, to achieve a very creditable silver medal. It was a bit of a war of attrition, with the number of back to back games finally catching up on a number of the boys, with us having to field a team in the final that had numerous players carrying injuries. To the credit of all the boys they tried hard and never gave in, but in the end we were beaten by a better team on the day. One of the highlight/lowlights included Gibbo being knocked senseless by the NZ keeper and being carted off to hospital for an overnight stay, which tragically not only cut his stay in Melbourne short but also forced him into retirement due to the possibility of inflaming a previous serious injury. >

Soccer
continued..
Results To add further salt to his wounds, he had not even regained consciousness on the side of the field when the ensuing penalty kick > was blasted over the bar by Mick Kelly and in fact the ball has still not been retrieved and keen observers thought they saw it attached to the rear of a Jetstar plane at Tullamarine Airport. One of the most pleasing aspects from this games was that we had huge initial interest from around the state and there were a number of quality players for all the teams that were unable to attend due to the timing of the games falling over Easter and Anzac Day. This all goes well for future events, in particular the open men’s and female sides, where we quite easily could field 2 quality sides in each of their respective categories. If you know of anyone who would be interested please have them email me and I will include them in a group emailing list for upcoming events. I would like to thank the Qld Police Sporting Association, the Police Union, and our sponsor BSN (supplements), our non-playing officials, travelling supporters and our games Managers Acting Senior Sergeant Trevor Wendt and Sergeant Rebecca Dale for all their support and assistance. I would personally like to thank every player who attended who behaved impeccably throughout and where a credit to the QPS. It would also be remiss of me to not mention that the reigning ‘bite the box’ champion from the previous few police games, Dom Varfis (Northern Region), who again conquered all before him and to be honest hardly had to exert himself, due to the lack of quality contenders (especially the Hockey…. yes chucky you talked your supposed champion up, but alas unable to perform on the big stage once again). Bring on 2016 and I look forward to seeing everyone at the Sunshine Coast, where I am confident we will run a highly successful games and perform even better than we did in Victoria.

The Big Secret To Fatloss -Sally Brouwer fitness www.sallybrouwerfitness.com.au
THE BIG SECRET TO FAT LOSS.. What if I told you that I had the secret – what would you be willing to pay? A lot I’m guessing as we are spending millions of dollars each year on health and fitness products, diet foods and fads, pills, potions…… and yet as a nation we’re getting fatter and fatter. Let me ask you this: If there was a magic fast blasting pill out there, or a special shake, piece of gym equipment or even wonder food, do you think Oprah would still be fat? I don’t think so. I do have the secret to fat loss and I am going to give it to you FREE! I don’t care what excuse you come up with, be it genetics, big bones, thyroid issues or the old “I’ve tried everything and nothing works” statement. This is the secret to fat loss and EVERYONE can do it.
1. Natural, unprocessed, fresh food is good for you – eat it everyday. My motto is: “You don’t have to like it, you just have to eat it”. Stop sounding like a 2 year old and eat your vegetables.
2. Exercise! You do have the time, you just need to prioritise. 30 minutes a day is ample time to get a good workout. You don’t need fancy equipment, music, the latest nike shoes or a sunny day – you just need to move. Find something that you enjoy and do it everyday.
The Big Secret To Fatloss -Sally Brouwer fitness www.sallybrouwerfitness.com.au
3. It is not a “diet” it is not a “12 week detox process” it is a lifestyle change if you’re not committed to doing it for the rest of your life don’t expect the results to stay with you for the rest of your life.
4. Drink water.. .. lots of it 5. Be honest with yourself. Eating a piece of chocolate cake in private does just as much damage to the fat stores as it does in public.
6. Change your mindset. You don’t “deserve” rubbish food if you’ve had a long day at work, if you’ve been good all week, if you’re stressed, run down, lonely etc etc. What you need is a bubble bath or a good book. A block of chocolate is not going to solve your problems.
7. Hard work. If you’re willing to follow these simple rules, I 100% guarantee you will succeed in losing fat. However (you may not like this part – hence why we are an obese nation) it takes organization, good time management skills, planning, avoiding temptation, dedication and sticking to it ALL THE TIME.

STRENGTH TRAINING & CARDIO
FOR MAINTAINING MUSCLE CONDITION & BONE DENSITY
Strength Training Muscle mass naturally diminishes with age. If you don’t do anything to replace the lean muscle you lose, you’ll increase the percentage of fat in your body, but strength training can help you preserve and enhance your muscle mass — at any age. Resistance training increases muscle strength by pitting the muscles against a weight or force. Different forms of resistance training include free weights, weight machines, resistance bands and your own body weight. The beginner should consider training two or three times per week to gain the maximum benefit.
Strength training also helps you : ■ Develop strong bones. By stressing your bones, strength training increases bone density and reduces the risk of osteoporosis. ■ Control your weight. As you gain muscle, your body gains a bigger “engine” to burn calories more efficiently — which can result in weight loss. The more toned your muscles, the easier it is to control your weight. ■ Reduce your risk of injury. Building muscle helps protect your joints from injury. It also contributes to better balance, which can help you maintain independence as you age. ■ Boost your stamina. As you get stronger, you won’t fatigue as easily. ■ Manage chronic conditions. Strength training can reduce the signs and symptoms of many chronic conditions, including arthritis, back pain, depression, diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis. ■ Sharpen your focus. Some research suggests that regular strength training helps improve attention for older adults.

STRENGTH TRAINING & CARDIO
FOR MAINTAINING MUSCLE CONDITION & BONE DENSITY
Strength training can be done at home or in the gym. Consider the options.. ■ Body weight. You can do many exercises with little or no equipment. Try push-ups, pull-ups, abdominal crunches and leg squats. Use aluminium cans or books as weights. Use the wall for abdominal work or arm work. ■ Resistance tubing. Resistance tubing is inexpensive, lightweight tubing that provides resistance when stretched. You can choose from many types of resistance tubes in nearly any sporting goods store. ■ Free weights. Barbells and dumbbells are classic strength training tools. ■ Weight machines. Most fitness centers offer various resistance machines. You can also invest in weight machines for use at home.
STRENGTH TRAINING & CARDIO
FOR MAINTAINING MUSCLE CONDITION & BONE DENSITY
Cardio On non weight training days, aim to do some form of cardio vascular training 3-4 days a week. Cardiovascular exercise is any form of rhythmical exercise completed for prolongued periods of time (usually greater than 15 minutes) and involves working large amounts of the bodies muscle mass while increasing the pulse and breathing rate above normal levels. Examples of cardiovascular exercise include: ■ Brisk Walking ■Jogging/Running ■Swimming ■ Cycling ■Stepping ■Aerobics Classes ■Using a Cross Trainer Combine your training with adequate fluid intake of 1-2 litres of water a day and a diet of fresh vegetables and fruit, 2-3 serves of protein and whole foods for a leaner, stronger, healthier you.
Whether you are wanting to tone, lose weight or increases strength, a wholistic approach is always best for sustainable results. Combine Strength training, cardiovascular training, hydration and healthy eating for best results
