A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Queensland Police Sporting Association Inc. March 2016
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
I
t has been a busy year, firstly with the appointment of the AP&ES games managers. Unfortunately, their late arrival in March/April put them behind the eight ball and made their job more difficult. However, they took to the tasks with gusto and through their efforts have placed the games and the QPSA Inc., in a sound position to deliver a super special event. I thank Brett and Greg for efforts to date and for their ongoing commitment. I also thank Mark, Cassie and Michelle who have worked really hard in pulling sports and IT issues together in short time frames. We managed to stage a Mini Queensland Police games thanks to the efforts of the committee especially Trevor and Jim who did their usual Super Saturday thing at the Academy. We have managed to provide ongoing support to numerous applications for sponsorship including the Police Shooting team, Baker to Vegas relay team, members of Police Rugby Union and OZ tag teams. Support has continued for Police Legacy and PCYC events through donations. We remain financially stable through the diligent efforts of our Treasurer, Trevor, not an easy job in today’s times. While we continue to survive there are a number of issues that will impact on our existence into the future. Availability of committee members to attend meetings. Membership. Full time Sport Coordinator/Secretary. Communication including Web Site and Magazine production. Finally, I thank all of the Committee for their efforts of the past year. The next 6 months is the make or break for not only the AP&ES Games but the QPSA Inc. John McCoomb President QPSA Inc.

POLICE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES GAMES
I
t is with great pride and pleasure that our beautiful Sunshine Coast welcomes our friends from the Police and Emergency Services to your annual AP&ES Games. These Games will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of a very special, and highly successful, year of major events for the Sunshine Coast – a 12-month schedule that has established us as the regional events capital of Australia. This is the Sunshine Coast’s first opportunity to host the Games, 14 years on from their last staging in Queensland, and our goal is to give you a week to remember, as well as helping you highlight the outstanding work that our police and emergency services workers and volunteers perform every day. For those of you new to the Coast, you have arrived in a family friendly region that loves its sport, especially when it comes to participating and celebrating the feats of others. I’m sure you will enjoy our exceptional sporting facilities, especially at the Games base at the Kawana Sports Precinct, our enviable spring climate, as well as our wide range of outstanding accommodation and entertainment options. While you are here, I invite you to take a look at the Sunshine Coast’s perfect beaches, the mystique and beauty of our hinterland and check out our many varied towns and villages. There really is something for everyone. Best of luck to all teams and competitors and I look forward to seeing you back here in the future. CR MARK JAMIESON MAYOR

Small Hack - 15.0hh n.e. 16.0hh Large Hack - over 16.0hh Hunter Classes A type of horse, rather than a breed, suitable for being ridden to hounds, a well-mannered, smooth gaited jumping horse. Hack Classes A type rather than a breed, hacks are elegant riding horses, popular in the show ring. Pleasure Classes Ridden in a snaffle bit, no noseband, whips or spurs. May be ridden with one hand only. Rider Classes A riding competition or rider class is a competition between riders to determine the most correct rider position and application of the aids in an efficient and elegant manner. Western Showmanship at Halter It involves a person on the ground leading a horse, wearing a halter or bridle, through a series of manoeuvres called a pattern. The horse itself is not judged on its conformation. Rather, the exhibitor is judged on how well he or she exhibits the animal to its best advantage, with additional scoring for the grooming and presentation of both horse and handler. Western Pleasure All riding for Western Pleasure classes is done with almost no contact with the Bit. The horse is obedient to the lightest lift' or touch of the rein against the neck and contact with the leg and seat. Class requirements are: Mandatory to go around the arena both ways at a walk, a jog, a lope. You may be asked to change direction from the halt, walk or jog only. You must back up when asked to. An extended jog may be asked for. Western Pleasure Western Horsemanship is a riding class with a set pattern which is changed for each show. The group will be asked to work around the arena 'on the rail' as for Western Pleasure. Hunter Under Saddle The Hunter Under Saddle class aims to show the horse's movements between jumps. The Hunter Under Saddle horse must travel longer but still very evenly, rhythmically and calmly. The seat is more active, the stirrups shorter as for hunting. The pace is
ground covering, the gait flat and smooth. The horse will have a far longer stride and as a result, be travelling faster, but it is the length of stride rather than speed which will be judged. Mandatory class requirements are walk, trot and canter each way around the arena on the rail. Reverse is asked for only from halt, walk, and trot. A back-up is required. An extended trot or hand gallop can be requested. Hunt Seat Equitation This is a riding class with a set pattern which changes for each show. The class is then required to work on the arena rail as per Hunter Under Saddle. Trail Trail is an arena event, but it is directly related to riding on bush trails. It confirms the suitability of the horse as a pleasurable, adaptable trail horse. Obstacles are used to simulate situations that may be out in a paddock or in rough country. It is not designed to be an obstacle course but a test of obedience and style. The primary object of a trail class is to show the horse's ability to get from one point to another safely and swiftly - no matter what obstacles are present. Reining Reining is a western riding competition for horses where the riders guide the horses through a precise pattern of circles, spins, and stops. All work is done at the lope (a slow, relaxed version of the horse gait more commonly known worldwide as the canter), or the gallop (the fastest of the horse gaits). Beginner A person/horse who has never placed at organised shows. Open A class for riders who have placed at organised shows. Junior Horse A horse aged 5 yrs and under, may be shown in a snaffle bit, curb bit (1 handed) or bosal (western hackamore). Senior Horse A horse aged 6 yrs and over MUST be shown in a curb bit and ridden one handed Dilutes Including Pintos, Buckskins, Appaloosas, Palomino’s and all breeds of colour Dressage riding attire http://www.equestrian.org.au/sites/default/files/2016%20 Dressage%20Rule%20Book%20effective%201st%20Jan%20 2016%20Clean%20Version%203.pdf From page 23 Show Horse riding attire http://www.equestrian.org.au/sites/default/files/EA_ShowHorse_ Rules_25Feb2016-MARKED_VERSION.pdf From page 17 Western riding attire http://www.aqha.com.au/horse/rule_book/resources/2015_rule_ book_sectionfive_updated_janaury_2016.pdf From page 87 for ‘english’ and page 91 for ‘western’

RUGBY LEAGUE MASTERS 2016 MASTERS RUGBY LEAGUE 2016 In 2007, the NRL held the inaugural masters carnival at Runaway bay for broken down old rugby league players. This event is now 10yrs old with the anniversary being held in March 2016. Over 80 teams from Australia and New Zealand plus Norfolk Island participated. The Qld Police Rugby league Association recognised the QPS possess many past and present players in their prime, so in 2008 the QPS Old Dawgs were founded and have played in every carnival since. Asters rugby league is for players over 35 yrs. of age with slightly modified rules to reduce the chance of injury. The emphasis being on enjoying the games in the right spirit. This allows players to take the field well into their 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. The Old Dawgs had another successful carnival remaining undefeated for the second year in succession. This is due in no small part to the support staff, keeping the team well hydrated both during and after the games. 2017 will mark the 10th anniversary of the Old dawgs and out team continues to grow in numbers from retired and current police. Many current members also play for other teams. For more information regarding this fantastic event go to nrlmasters. com or contact Donut King at Umu Park station.
