Right now more than 250 children in the Quad Cities area are waiting to be matched to an adult mentor. Currently BBBSMV serves about 700 children each year. The Over The Edge campaign will provide needed resources to build the program to impact 1,000 children over the next three years.

87% of the children enrolled in the BBBSMV program come from low income households.

Many of these children are facing  adversity each day. It could be coping with poverty, the loss of a loved one  or having to adjust to a recent move to a new school or neighborhood.

Children who are mentored show a 61% improvement in their self-confidence each year. 54% improvement in their self-motivation. 55% improvement in having a positive sense of their future.

Fundraising made easy!

1

CREATE YOUR FUNDRAISING PAGE: (see the previous pages) Make sure 11 you customize your page with your photo or logo, set your goal, and tell your story. You can even spice it up with a video!

2

ASK!: The number one reason that people give is because they are asked. Don’t be shy about telling everyone you know that you are participating in Over The Edge for Big Brothers Big Sisters! Don’t forget to go to places where you spend money like your hair salon, barber, dentist or gym.

3

BY THE NUMBERS: If you want to reach your minimum then plan to reach more than your minimum! Break it down by numbers! Your registration fee kicked off your fundraising! Ask 8 friends to each give $25. Ask 8 co-workers to support you for $25 each. Get 4 businesses to support you for $100 each! Ask your boss to support you for $100! Ask 4 family members to support you for $50 each! Add it up! You are there!

4

FOLLOW UP: Always follow up. Many people will need more than one request to donate and most will appreciate the reminder. Include fun facts and an update on how close you are to reaching your goal. Send thank you notes and emails to your donors. Ask them to share your effort too!

5

KEEP GOING: So, you reached your goal? Keep going! The BBBSMV Over the Edge for Kids’ Sake committee is thinking of great incentives to motivate you and there will be special recognition and keepsakes for the top ten fundraisers!

6

HAVE FUN: You’ve worked extremely hard to surpass your goal. Get a group of friends together to celebrate and watch you go Over The Edge on August 25th! Take time to take in the view! Remember to post photos and/or video afterward and thank everyone! 11 7

Fundraising best practices

12

START EARLY!

CREATE AN EMAIL & SOCIAL MEDIA SCHEDULE.

Although it may seem like you have all the time in the world to fundraise, this event will be here sooner than you think! The sooner you start fundraising, the more money you will raise to support children in our community.

It’s easy to be super keen when you start your fundraising journey, but lose steam a couple of weeks in. To make sure you are reaching out to your potential donors consistently, create an email and social media schedule, with specific dates and diverse content (see content samples).

Remember, challenges and incentives will be coming your way, if you are ahead, you stand a better chance to earn some fun “rewards”.

Suggested topics for your digital messaging:

This ensures that you will be switching up your messaging so that your potential donors are not receiving the same messages over and over again. Keep it interesting! 1. Mission related emails from Big Brothers Big Sisters—why you are doing this. 2. Include updates as to where you are in the fundraising process. 3. Include pictures and videos to help make messages more exciting!

Fundraising best practices 13

MAKE A VIDEO! GET HELP FROM YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM! 

If your friends and family are not able to donate, that’s OK! There is lots they can do to help you reach your goal!

Ask them to share your personal fundraising page on their social media forums.

Provide them with info cards about the event that include your fundraising page URL and ask that they distribute them to their network (ask your fundraising coach at BBBS for Over The Edge business cards).

Ask your friends, family and co-workers to reach out to the people in their lives that may have a connection to the BBBS mission and that would consider donating to the cause.

As opposed to writing post after post on social media forums, consider switching it up and make a video detailing what you are doing and why you are doing it. (Talk about how you’re training and building up your confidence!)

Most people will watch a video before they will reach a post.

Have fun with it! Be creative!

It’s easier to communicate the mission of the organization when you are speaking about it. Video makes it more personal.

Fundraising Inspiration for Edgers and Grand Standers! Ask a business to donate something to your effort (like a dining gift card or bottle of wine) then, create your own contests like whoever donates this week will go into a drawing to win ___________! At the end of the week have someone take a video of you drawing the name and post it on your Facebook page!

14

Cookie campaign at work! Bake up some scrumptious cookies or brownies and have a desk-top bake sale at work! Anyone at work who donates on a particular day will get a treat!

Add a hyperlink taking people to your fundraising page to your email signature.

Create a donation bucket or basket on your desk and keep it visible for people to contribute to. Ask your boss if you can put it in a common work area!

You will be rappelling down 11 stories divide the number of floors into your recommended amount to give! $100 per donation brings you $1,100!

Challenge another Edger to see who can raise the most additional dollars during a certain time frame. A little competition never hurt anyone!

Throw a fundraising party! Think of something that you and your friends or family like to do together and turn it in to a fundraising party!

Create a garage sale event or even sell stuff on line with all proceeds going to support your Over The Edge effort! 14 14

15 Fundraising Inspiration for Fearless Leader Company and Organizations.

Set a goal based on the following: $2,500 for the first rappeller + $1,500 for each additional rappeller at your workplace or within your organization. Want 4 Fearless Leaders? Then your company or organization goal will be $7,000.

Ask vendors (those your company spends money with) to support your company’s Fearless Leader effort. If they see this is important to your company many of them will be excited to contribute and help you achieve your goal.

Ask your company to match what you raise! If you raise $3,500 to send 4 people Over The Edge, then ask your company if they will match that effort.

See if your customers want to participate! Customers love to see your community involvement and many may be willing to help in whatever way they can—even sharing your campaign on their social media!

Organize your company to run an Over The Edge campaign over four months. During the campaign create events like a “chili cook-off”, an ice cream social, a smart phone treasure hunt around work, an outdoor BBQ event. Employees “pay to play” and all proceeds go to support your Over The Edge campaign.

If your company plays in a softball or soccer league challenge all players (even the opposing team) to contribute an amount for each run scored or each point made.

Fundraising Sample content (for emails, social media and letters). Hello Family and Friends,

Dear _________,

I have signed up to do something that many of you may think is crazy. I have joined Over The Edge in supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley. Over The Edge is much like it sounds. I will stand on the roof of the Hotel Blackhawk in downtown Davenport, IA and step Over The Edge and rappel 140 feet (11 stories) to the ground! I’m not making this up! Check out the event website at www.overtheedgeqc.org.

I have made the commitment to help children who are facing adversity achieve success in life! I’m fundraising through Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley and going OVER THE EDGE on Saturday, August 25.

I am not asking you to rappel with me, but I will need your support to get me to my goal so I can go over! I am committed to raising $_____ for BBBS and youth mentoring. The vision of BBBS is that “all children achieve success in life” and with my commitment and your support, we will be able to impact the next generation in a very positive way. HOW CAN YOU HELP? By making a 100% tax deductible donation to my fundraising page which will deposit your contribution directly to BBBS. Just go to (insert your page URL) and make a donation with your credit card. You may also send checks or money orders made out to BBBS and mail them to me at (enter your address).

16

That’s right! I will be rappelling down 11 stories at the Hotel Blackhawk in downtown Davenport, IA. Every dollar I raise will go directly to BBBS so that mentors for children can be recruited, enrolled, trained and professionally supported. You can help support me by contributing to my fundraising campaign. If I reach my goal of $______ I will be going OVER THE EDGE! If you go to (insert your URL here) you can click on donate and contribute by using your credit card. Or, you can send me a check or money order made out to BBBSMV and mailed to my address at ________________. With your support, we can help a child achieve success in life and you can send me on the “ride of my life”! Don’t leave me hangin’! Thank you for your support.

Please help me support the great work that BBBS is doing. I promise to rappel down a building in return. Thank you for supporting children in our community!

Andy Yohe, Gold Medal Paralympian At the age of 16 Andy Yohe from Bettendorf, had a tragic accident in which he lost both of his legs. He had to overcome a great deal of adversity not only with regard to surgeries, physical therapy and getting fitted with prosthetics, but in overcoming the psychological challenges. As a boy he had been involved in hockey and wanted more than anything to get back on the ice. He discovered sled hockey and began to get involved. He trained and played and eventually tried out for and made the U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey team. Andy participated in three Paralympics winning a bronze and two gold medals for the U.S. Team. Andy says that he can identify with our Littles who face some kind of adversity in their life each day. That is why Andy Yohe is GOING OVER THE EDGE!
