Great Oaks

Marion Dalton Visionary & Pastor of Bethel Harvest Church

God has given us a mission statement for which we can lay our lives down. Bethel Harvest Church is a people who belong, believe, become, and build. One of the things I love about our mission statement is that it connects with our everyday lives AND it connects with the Great Commission that God has given us. Our small groups are a reflection of this reality, and this summer semester is a wonderful opportunity for you to discover this for yourself! The verse that you see on the new Bethel logo is Isaiah 61:3b: “In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the Lord has planted for his own glory” (NLT). I want us to think about a question: Do we want to bring God glory? As Christians, I think most of us would be quick to answer, “yes.” There are some truths in this short verse that can unlock our ability to see this happen. First, we must accept that we are righteous. We are loved and accepted by God to the extent that He paid the price for our righteousness. We belong to Him, not because of what we do but because he first loved us (1 John 4:19)! The first step to bringing glory to God through our lives is to recognize that by our choice to receive Jesus, everything we do is now “in [our] righteousness.” Second Corinthians 5:21 declares the truth to us: “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (NIV). Secondly, we must believe how God sees us – we are already a “great oak” in His eyes. This is a tough step for many of us, because we’ve been programmed by the world to believe so many negative things about ourselves. In this verse, God is talking about planting. He’s talking about a seed going into the ground with the potential to grow. Yet, God speaks the unseen potential before it is seen with the natural eyes. When God plants us, He already sees us as a great oak. God sees us withstanding the wind and the storms, offering shelter and protection to those around us, and being a strength that can be relied upon. Do we believe that about ourselves? We need to let go of our “little sapling” mentality and start believing like God that we are “great oaks”!

4

Third, we must recognize that it is the Lord who plants us SO THAT we can become who God designed us to be. God knows the right soil. God knows the right location. God knows the way we need to be nurtured. God knows the storms that will come against us that will strengthen our roots and our branches. And because He knows all these things, it is HE who plants us. We do not plant ourselves. Many in the body of Christ miss this truth and we attempt to plant ourselves where we think we should be planted. Others are constantly transplanting themselves and they are never in any place long enough to start the arduous process of becoming who God designed them to be. Becoming is not about everything being easy or comfortable or

convenient or quick. When we learn to value where God has planted us, we will begin to experience the growth for which He designed us. Psalm 92:12-13 says, “The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God.” Small groups are one way to value where God has planted us. Getting connected in transparent relationships is a key to our spiritual growth. Finally, we must recognize that we are planted for HIS glory. The culmination of God’s purpose for us in the earth is that we were created for building His Kingdom. If we can get a revelation that we belong to God, start believing what God believes, value where we’re planted in order to become who He designed us to be, THEN we will be a part of building His Kingdom in unprecedented ways! 2 Chronicles 16:9 gives a beautiful picture of this: “The eyes of the LORD search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.” God is seeking us out, to bless and strengthen us when we are fully devoted to His cause. When we take our eyes off ourselves and redirect our focus on Him, when we forfeit our need for glory and we are a champion for the glory of God, THEN we will see God’s Kingdom built up in the earth.” The long-term Mandates that God has given the Bethel family are all about His glory: becoming an Equipping Center, to be engaged in Church Planting., creating a Ministry Network, and changing communities and nations by releasing a Culture for Hope. Our ministry priorities for the local church – leadership and discipleship – are the way we help people travel this journey of belonging, believing, becoming, and building the Kingdom. As we strengthen the local church by focusing on these priorities, we are increasing our capacity to receive and accomplish God’s vision for this house. We are already seeing lives transformed and multiplied Kingdom-impact as the vision has been released and we are being intentional about becoming the great oaks that God has already declared us to be, both personally and together as a church. We come back to the question we began with: Do we want to bring God glory? If our answer is “yes,” than our lives must align with the principles of God’s Word. We must learn to travel through this process of becoming so that we can build the Kingdom the way He wants us to. As we are a people who belong, believe, become, and build, we WILL BE a people who bring God glory.

Vacation Mindset

Stephanie Dalton Visionary & Pastor of Bethel Harvest Church

Have you turned on your “vacation-mindset”? Ecclesiastes 3:1 “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven…” As I write this, the weather is changing. The grass is greener. The trees are budding. The flowers are blossoming. The school year is coming to a close. Visions of beaches are dancing in many peoples’ minds. It feels like we’ve had to wait longer than usual this year, but it never fails to happen…the seasons change. And with the changing seasons, we have the opportunity to change ourselves. Most of us do anyway, whether we realize it or not. How do we typically change in the summer? I think it’s safe to say that many of us turn on “vacation mindset” with the first 90 degree day. Summer is a time of rest and escape from the grind of the ordinary that we toil in for the other 8 months out of the year. There’s something about 12 years of schooling that always included a summer vacation that ingrains something deep within us that we never seem to let go of. No matter how old we are: Summer means vacation! Am I against vacation? Certainly not! On the contrary, I think we all need some vacation time to step back for rest, reflection, and rejuvenation. It’s part of the rhythm of life that we see reflected through the changing seasons, and we are wise to follow the example of creation. I want to challenge us , though, that a “vacation mindset” can be detrimental to our spiritual growth and our family growth. We often times turn on our “vacation mindset” in every area of our lives, whether we admit it or not. And this mindset (and we REALLY don’t like to admit this) is a selfish mindset. We want to be on vacation from all responsibility; and if we can’t get that, then we’ll at least just do enough to get by and we surely won’t be going out of our way to add anything new to our schedule. Our schedule becomes too full…with ourselves! Suddenly, it seems, our job, our family, our relationships, our church, and our spiritual growth take a back seat to our own escapism mentality. What if summer became a time when we decided to be more fully engaged in our relationship with Jesus than any other time of year? What if summer became a time when we focused on making investments in our family and other life-giving relationships? We already have the opportunities built in to our schedule; all we have to do is be intentional about how we use them.

6

And there’s a surprise waiting for you on the other side of this

challenge. When you focus your time and energy on investing in Jesus and relationships, you’ll discover a greater fulfillment AND a greater rejuvenation from your summer than you’ve ever had before! You’ll not only give life to others but you’ll be infused with a new energy and vibrancy that is a gift from God. Take some time this week and write out a plan for your summer. Make a list of activities you want to do with friends or family. Places you want to travel to. Books you want to read. Areas you want to grow in. Prayers you need to pray. People you want to bless. Get specific and then see how many things you can check off your list by the end of the summer. And it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money, either, so that’s no excuse! Some of our favorites have been bird watching in the backyard, days at the park with grandparents, and, of course, lots of time at the community pool. Get creative. Have fun. Laugh a lot. Listen to God intently. Enjoy the beauty of God’s creation. There truly “is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.” Make THIS summer your season to discover all over again your relationship with Jesus and the people you love most. I can’t wait to hear your stories of how this summer was your best summer ever!

Get creative. Have fun. Laugh a lot. Listen to God. 7

One Big Step

Tina Leslie Life Track Director

James 4:8a “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” Life is a process of learning and growing, of stepping into what could be at the expense of what is. When toddlers are first learning to walk, it can be comical and often times painful to watch. They start by pulling themselves up on tables and furniture. They get up. They fall down. They get up. They fall down. Then they begin walking around the furniture with their hands and learning to balance for the first time. At this point in their life, they are getting around quite well by crawling but there’s something on the inside of them that longs to walk. After many failed attempts, falling down, and faithful coaching from loving family members, there comes the culminating moment of that one big step that changes their life forever. The one big step when it is realized that life will never be the same. In that moment, the risk of falling down fades to the background, and the attraction of opportunity pulls them forward. You can sometimes see it in their face as they waver back and forth deciding, “Do I do it the same way I have been, crawling on all fours; or do I take the risk for my dream of walking?” Ironically, this process does not stop once we’ve matured beyond toddlerhood. As adults, we are constantly weighing our risks and our opportunities. We are incessantly asking God questions: Do you really want me to do that? What if I did this? If that person would just do such and such, then I would…You fill in the blank. It seems like we use a whole lot of our energy questioning our circumstances rather than taking that one big step that could change our lives forever. Satan attempts to paralyze us in fear, to immobilize us in indecision. But this does not have to be the case. The simple words of James 4:8 should reassure us of this: “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” Can you see our loving heavenly Father watching us make our feeble attempts to walk on our own? He reaches out His hands towards us and invites us to take that one big step toward Him. He loves us too much to abandon us in our time of need. He will coach us and pick us up again when we fall. Yes, we will still fall because He knows we are learning even when we are falling. But He will not allow us to be alone. We are His children. He is always watching over with His loving eyes and His strength to protect us.

8

We can apply the idea of taking “one big step” in just about every area of our lives and on a daily basis in our relationship with the Lord. Right now, I want you to think about it in the context of this summer semester of small groups. Have you been paralyzed in fear or immobilized by indecision when it comes to signing up for a group? Well, it’s time to take a big step, and rest assured, daddy will be there with you. Not only

that, but your life will never be the same because of the relationships you begin and because of your obedience to take a risk! I’m sure you’ve been getting around on your own quite well just like some toddlers seem to crawl quicker than I can walk; but there’s something on the inside of you that longs for transparent connections with like-minded believers. You want to share the journey of life. You want to be fully engaged in what it means to belong, believe, become, and build. NOW is the time to take that one big step. The opportunity is right before you with over 60 small groups to choose from. Will you take the step? The choice is yours.

Now is the time to take that one big step.

The Life Track is a journey of discovery and transformation. The Life Track is your invitation to join the Bethel family on the road to fulfilling your destiny. It is not a program or an impersonal system, but a lifegiving process of personal growth and building God’s Kingdom in the earth. Our passion is to see the lives of people being transformed to be more and more like Jesus. Do you want to be like Jesus? Then we invite you to set yourself on the path to transformation with us. Everything we do at Bethel is framed through the 4 B’s that are our mission statement and our highest priority. We know that if Bethel can be a people who belong, believe, become and build the Kingdom, that God will continue to bless and multiply the life-changing ministry that is taking place. Welcome to the family. Welcome to the journey of discovery and transformation. You will never be the same, and we believe the world will never be the same because of it! The life and ministry of Jesus is a picture of the 4 B’s. Jesus personified the abundant, whole life for which God created every human being, and to us that is what the 4 B’s represent. They are basic and foundational, yet at the same time they are comprehensive and complete – both for every individual and for the Bethel family as a community of believers. Belong…where you are loved and accepted. Jesus knew to Whom He belonged – His Heavenly Father – and because He possessed such assurance about His identity, He lived a life full of love and focused on helping others discover the same love He knew. Jesus loved and accepted every person he encountered. From the woman caught in adultery to the rich young ruler, from a greedy tax collector to the religious leaders who judged Him, from washing His disciples’ feet to laying His life down on the cross, Jesus never faltered in His unconditional love for all people. Jesus also lived with a priority on relationships. He called twelve men to be His closest companions as He carried out ministry, and among the twelve there were three who were dearest to Him. Belonging was a way of life for Jesus, and at Bethel we’re passionate about enjoying our journey just like He did. Jesus, and at Bethel we’re passionate about enjoying our journey just like He did. 10

Believe…in Jesus and His Word. When Jesus walked this earth, He was a living testimony to keeping the Word of God central in all aspects of life. When He was tempted in the desert, He answered with the Word. When He was challenged by religious leaders, He answered with the Word. When He taught the multitudes, He spoke by the authority of God’s Word. There are so many ideas and distractions in today’s world competing for our devotion, we must make an intentional choice to put God’s Word first in our lives no matter what. And that is our deliberate and unashamed approach to ministry at Bethel – we preach and teach the liberating, life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ. Become…who God designed you to be. Jesus preached to the multitudes and performed the miraculous by God’s power so that people would recognize that God’s love and grace was available to everyone. So that people would be shaken out of the status quo and into a journey of becoming the men and women God created them to be. The greatest picture of this in Jesus’ life is through His relationship with His disciples. He chose twelve unsuspecting, ordinary men from all walks of life; and over the course of three years He helped them discover their calling and be transformed into His image. Becoming isn’t about information; it’s about experiencing radical transformation and being released into the world with the undeniable message of changed life! Build…the Kingdom of God. When Jesus left the earth, He did so with one final message to His disciples. He had lived His life with them, they belonged together, they believed together, they became God’s laborers together – and now He told them why. The Great Commission (show references…mt., mk) was the culmination of Jesus’ ministry. God had not sent Him to accomplish the work but to equip and commission believers to be released in the earth to accomplish the work. When Jesus taught them to pray, “Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven,” He was preparing them for the moment He would leave and they would be sent out with the power of the Holy Spirit and the Gospel of Jesus Christ to change the world. Bethel is a local church with a global vision. One life, one neighborhood, one city, one state, one nation at a time, we are laying our lives down to build the Kingdom of God.

Do you want to be like Jesus? 11

Leadership Development Track At Bethel, we believe every follower of Christ should be a leader. As disciples of Jesus, we are leading others to the most important discovery they’ll ever experience. Our Leadership Development Track is in place to help every believer navigate an intentional process we summarize as discover, develop, and deploy. We want to help you discover the gifting and callings God has for your life. We want to help you develop, in practical and spiritual ways, as you serve your gifting to the body of Christ. And finally, we want to see you deployed into life-giving ministry as you are building up God’s Kingdom. The track consists of three classes, and they will prove to be a roadmap for navigating you on this journey. They can be taken in any order but together we believe they will play a vital role in you discovering God’s destiny for your life. If you are a Christ-follower, you are a leader. This track will better equip you to function in that role and become who God designed you to be. Welcome to the journey!
