instilling faith in young people is a priority to God, therefore it should be a priority to us. Bethel has great Student Ministry programs that are developing children and youth to be long-term disciples of Jesus. We recognize that the areas in which this ministry takes place is desperately in need of repair and expansion. Quite simply, we can do better for our children and youth. With the expansion of the building a few years ago, we now have the space upstairs to increase our Kids Ministry rooms, bring them up to date, and design areas that function well with our programs. We can also provide our youth with their own space for worship services and fellowship. This brochure not only provides the current challenges but also the plan to invest in the younger generation and to build for our future. Together, with faith and sacrifice, we can do this! While we are grateful for the rooms we have for our Kids and Youth ministry there are challenges we face with our current facility. The following list is a compilation of obstacles that we believe can be resolved with a renovation. These are observations that teachers, volunteers, and parents have made and has guided us in knowing what is important in giving our children and youth a fresh and healthy ministry space. We have outlined them so you will have an understanding of what can be improved in this renovation.
1. TODDLER ROOM (AGES 2/3) - No natural light or windows - Classroom size makes designated areas for play, story/music and craft insufficient for number of children - Lack of storage: toys become a distraction during teaching time, cannot keep supplies out of reach of children - No bathroom/sink in room means adults have to leave room resulting in inadequate supervision
2. PRESCHOOL ROOM (AGES 4/5) - Wall separating 2 classrooms does not allow easy view of all children for the teacher - Lack of storage results in classroom looking disorganized and chaotic with Kings Kids supplies mixed in with Preschool supplies - Accordion wall partition not functional and becomes distraction for children
3. HUB (JR. HIGH GRADES 5 – 8) - While existing facility is large enough for our current attendance, the layout of the room does not provide the ability to create distinct spaces for games/fellowship and teaching
4. GYM (SR. HIGH GRADES 7-12) - Multifunctional room means no ownership for youth or place of belonging in Church facility - Ongoing electrical issues with lighting - Heating and a/c units make loud noises which distracts during service - Multifunctional use limits ability to use it as a full gym and does not encourage an atmosphere of worship for youth services - No distinct area for fellowship results in students sitting on floor in hallway or in an office - Requires setup and tear down; before, during and after each service
5. WASHROOMS - Not enough toilets/sinks for number of children on Sunday morning, results in line-ups in bathrooms - Not designed for children: all sinks, toilets, and dispensers are out of reach of many children who use the facilities; children have to use stools (unsafe) or leaders have to lift children to reach all items (against Plan to Protect guidelines) - Facility is outdated not matching the standard of main floor bathrooms
6. CLASSROOM - Lack of storage results in Kings Kids supplies staying out making classroom unusable on Sunday mornings - No natural light or windows
7. NORTH STAIRWELL - Safety concern for parents due to steep staircase without landing - As a first impression to our Kids Zone the stairwell is very uninviting to new families, gives a negative view of our ministry
8. ELEMENTARY ROOM (GRADES 1-4) - Room is too small for current attendance resulting in: having to limit activities, makes it difficult to have small group teaching/prayer times, restricts Bible teacher from using big props for visual and kinesthetic teaching techniques - Lack of storage: creates discipline issues with children, requires teachers to consistently move supplies in and out of classroom, no cubbies for children’s belongings results in distractions during teaching - No natural light or windows
9. STORAGE ROOM - Lack of storage upstairs made it necessary to alter the purpose of the room from valuable classroom space to storage
10. HALLWAY - Institutional appearance - Coat racks create narrow hallways and become climbing concern for children - Confusing for new families trying to find correct classroom
SECOND FLOOR CONCEPTUAL DESIGN
WASHROOM EXPANSION - Expanded Washrooms to serve all age groups - Wheel chair accessible - Barrier Free - Redesigned facilities so that all ages can reach toilets and sinks without assistance - Complies with ‘Plan to Protect’ recommendations for staff assisting children in washrooms
PRESCHOOL ROOM - Cubbies for children’s coats and boots - Washroom in classroom gives easier access for children and helps to maintain consistent teacher / child ratios in the classroom - Storage to organize and keep toys out of sight during teaching time to minimize distractions
SENIOR HIGH ROOM - Easy entry into Junior High area allows for both rooms to be used on a Senior High night - Space is designated for pre and post service use with a cafe area and conversational seating - Senior High auditorium with stage for worship band and seating for approximately 60 students - Flexible furniture setup to allow for rearrangement of chairs for small group discussions or other activities
ACCESSIBILITY - Elevator to give access to second floor for wheelchairs, parents with strollers and seniors - Modified north stairwell that includes landing to address safety issues
JUNIOR HIGH ROOM - Geared towards building relationships through play and conversation - Natural daylight to illuminate the space - Allows for distinct areas for pre-service hang-out and small group devotional teaching and discussion - Can be converted for multi-purpose functions and use by other church groups such as Men’s Group
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ROOM - Natural light in teaching areas - Distribution of space allows for large group teaching and small group application activities and discussion - Storage for all visual and kinesthetic teaching tools to make Bible stories more interactive and engaging
TODDLER ROOM - Increased space to allow for designated areas for stories and songs, crafts and activities, and play time - Washroom in classroom gives easier access for children and helps to maintain consistent teacher/child ratios in classroom - Sinks and counter space for snack preparation and clean-up for teachers - Cubbies in classroom so that children’s coats and diaper bags are safely tucked away - Natural light to brighten story and song area
STORAGE - Redesign would include a significant increase of space to address storage needs

PROJECT PHASES
The proposed renovation of the second floor would be completed in three phases in order to minimize the disruption to the overall operation of the church building, while also allowing for funding to be raised in stages.
PHASE 1 - Renovation of the existing stairwell to address safety concerns raised by parents - Renovation and expansion of the existing washrooms to provide barrier free accessibility as well as child friendly fixtures - Renovation of the Preschool room - Renovation of the corridor - Renovation of the existing exterior wall to provide new structural beams and large openings into the existing unused spaces
