KERUV* KORNER

What, No Gala?

As the old joke goes, Jewish holidays are either early or late; they never come on time. But one thing we at Beth El could count on each March was celebrating our Gala, shoehorned on a weekend between Purim and Passover. Even last year, at the epicenter of the pandemic, Beth El celebrated its deserving honorees by showing off their festive finery and thespian skills virtually. So nu? How are we all going to come together and feel the love this year?

Have no fear! Keruv to the rescue… Please join the Mental Health Initiative and Keruv for a wonderful and entertaining virtual gathering on Saturday night, March 13th. You won’t want to miss the high-energy comedienne, storyteller, and inclusion advocate Pamela Rae Schuller “on stage” for What Makes Me Tic, or her powerful message to embrace what makes us different. With honesty and humor she conveys what it was like to grow up with “the most severe case of Tourette’s Syndrome” in North America. Of course, this program is inclusive…Bring your family and friends. Spread the word. Anyone from anywhere is welcome. And it’s free! Just go to bethelnr.org/WhatMakesMeTic to register. (See box on cover.)

The program will run from 7:30 pm to 8:45 pm. After telling us her story, Pam will answer any questions from the audience, which is often the most enlightening portion of her program— and, she is just funny. She is always interesting to hear. When she is not on stage, Pamela has worked professionally with teens to foster inclusion and self-acceptance in Jewish institutions, so come with your family. We do recommend that younger children watch with their parents in case they have questions or concerns. Pamela will be covering some painful and difficult material.

In 2021, let’s all get together virtually to celebrate one another. No need to squeeze into your tux or find the right gown. Wear your sweats, pour yourself a drink, and order in the sushi, sliders, or whatever was your favorite at the Gala. We’ll learn together, laugh together, and I promise not to sell any raffles.
