An introduction to Bethnal Green Academy Bethnal Green Academy is a mixed comprehensive secondary school which serves a community subject to high levels of social deprivation. A large proportion of the students are from ethnic minority backgrounds. The first language for a large majority of students is not English. Attainment on entry of students in year 7 is significantly below the national average. In spite of these factors outcomes at GCSE are significantly above the national average with 71% of students achieving 5 A*‐ C grades including English and Maths and 91% of students achieving 5 A*‐C grades. The value added to students’ attainment at Bethnal Green Academy puts it into 3% of schools in the country. Bethnal Green Academy was judged 'Outstanding' in all categories in December 2012. As a school we are committed to offering all students, regardless of socio‐economic background, a full, rich and diverse learning experience. The curriculum we offer is carefully tailored to the needs of our learners but is challenging and aims to keep open all opportunities when students leave Bethnal Green Academy. To further support this we offer a huge range of opportunities for students to extend and enrich their personal development during the school day.

Summer School During the last two weeks of August 2012 year 6 students due to start Bethnal Green Academy in September 2012 were invited in for a two week Summer School. The Summer School was specifically targeted at students eligible for free school meals (FSM) with the aim of boosting their attainment and narrowing the gap between FSM students and non‐FSM students. Around 100 students were invited to attend the programme. Prior to the students attending the Summer School the staff involved were given three days of intensive training in the delivery of English, maths and science at a Key Stage2 to Key Stage 3 transition level. Students undertook a range of different activities focused on different subjects all of which were delivered in a fun, engaging manner but with the specific aim of raising attainment. The two weeks ended with a final celebration event with parents and carers invited into the school to share in the successes of the programme. This event was extremely well attended. The impact of the programme was been clearly measurable. 90% of FSM students in year 7 are on track to make 4+ levels of progress in English and Maths. This rate of progress is evident in other subject areas too. The programme also had a huge impact on parent engagement with the school; 100% of parents and carers of year 7 students attended the parents evening in the autumn term.

Breakfast Club Every morning from 07:45 free breakfast is available for all students in the canteen. Staff are present in an informal capacity but it is also an opportunity for more vulnerable students to meet with their key workers and prepare themselves for the day ahead. Students can also use resources in the library for independent study and during exam times staff hold seminars for small targeted groups of students to aid their revision. On average 40 students a day from a variety of year groups, although this number increases significantly during exam periods. Between 08:00 and 08:30 PE staff and coaches are onsite running organised sports sessions for students as well. Again, these are very well attended. Staff also run reading clubs to support students with their literacy with a particular focus on early stage EAL learners in order to bring their reading ages in line with expected national levels. This has had a significant impact on the progress made by these students in all subjects and year groups.

6

Lunch time clubs A number of clubs run at lunchtimes during term time to meet the needs of a wide variety of students. These range from focus academic support sessions to help students improve or catch up on missed coursework, but also offer a range of services to further support students in different areas. Below are two examples of the many clubs on offer at lunchtimes. Lloyds readers club Business mentors from a range of city businesses come in to work with students with reading ages significantly below their chronological age (more than two years less) Haven This is a club for students with a range of complex needs. Experienced and qualified staff run a range of activities that to help develop social skills and self‐esteem. As a result of this club, there has been a significant improvement in the behaviours of the students who attend it, which in turn has impacted positively on their attendance and attainment.

7

After school activities Every faculty at Bethnal Green Academy offers some form of extra curricular activity designed to engage and extended learners in different areas of the curriculum. A full list of the clubs is attached in the appendix but below is a few examples of the provision offered to students at the end of the day. Homework club This runs on Monday to Thursdays from 15:15 to 17:00. It is run by the Lead Learning Mentor and is supported by teaching assistants. The main aim is to provide a constructive, purposeful and supportive environment for students who may not have this at home to complete the day to day homework students are given in all subjects. Towards the end of the session the students are given a snack and participate in team building activities. This is a hugely popular club and is over subscribed, resulting in the need for prioritising students based on whether they are eligible for free school meals, whether they have special education needs and whether their parents have extended working hours. Currently 30 students regularly attend homework club. The club has significantly improved the completion rate and quality of year 7 homework A separate homework club for mid phase admission students who are new to the county and have low levels of literacy in English is also run. This club provides targeted intervention lessons on the practical use of English both in an out of school. The impact of this has meant the progression in reaching a fluent level of English has been greatly accelerated in the students who attend this club. Frantic Assembly drama club A group of Year 9, 10 and 12 students worked on a physical theatre and music project inspired by film/silent movies and Hitchcock. The programme is run in partnership with Frantic Assembly, the BFI, Shlomo and Rich Mix with the support of THAMES (Tower Hamlets Arts and Music Services). Pupils learned about Frantic’s trademark physicality and devising process whilst enhancing their abilities in the areas of performance, movement, directing and critical analysis. After six weeks of intense after‐school rehearsals the group performed at Rich Mix to showcase the work they have devised and created themselves, with the help of directors from one of the UK’s leading and award‐ winning theatre companies. Debate mate Debate mate is a unique international charity which is dedicated to improving social mobility by engaging students in formal debate structures. Every week a group of students from year 7 through 10, who are a range of abilities, meet to discuss some of the burning issues of the day. They are led by a recent graduate who takes through the process of expressing themselves formally and articulately in order for their point of view to be heard. These culminate in an inter school debate competition which they will be taking part in. The expected impact of the debate mate programme is to improve academic skills that can be applied in a number of subjects, particularly English and Humanities, but also provide the social skills which are of value in all subjects.

8

Sports clubs Clubs offering students to participate in a broad range of sports are run for all ages, abilities and genders. The PE department have made links with Arsenal Football Club and coaches from the club run sessions at lunch, after school and during the holidays.

9

ThinkForward ThinkForward is a new programme that was initiated in April 2012. ThinkForward is a bespoke initiative aimed at Year 10 and 11 students who, for a range of complex reasons, are at risk of significant underachievement. The project aims to help young people make the transition from school to work, providing critical support to those most at risk of falling out of education, employment or training. The initial focus of the work within Bethnal Green Academy was to enrol young people on the programme, establish resource banks, devise and undertake needs assessments, put in place the programme documentation including tracking systems/database and develop external contacts and partnerships. Following this, initial activities targeted at enrolled students commenced. There are a number of career and job‐related interventions tailored to individual interests and aspirations. These are:     

Hair & Beauty Catering Animal Care (London Zoo) Childcare – Pre apprenticeship PACE Youthwork

35 students are currently enrolled on the ThinkForward Programme at Bethnal Green Academy. Case studies “Melda attended The Young & Employable course in childcare, she absolutely loved it. Melda was fully engaged and made lots of new friends from other schools in Shoreditc and most felt she was the star student. Melda is sure she wants to spend her future working with children, her specific field needs to be investigated further.” “James attended his first two days at London Zoo Academy where the theory and practical care of insects and reptiles were covered. All staff and other students were extremely impressed with James’ work ethic and participation and he made a whole host of new friends from other schools. James didn't think he wanted to be a zoo keeper before the course, but it is now an option he would like to investigate further.” “Kubra, Larisa, Caroline & Jemima attended the first two days of the Hair & Beauty course, a very practical course based on what it is like to work in a hair and beauty salon. The kids were brilliant and very engaged. Caroline and Kubra have decided they want to follow a career in Beauty Therapy and Larisa wants to dpursue a career in Hair and Beauty. I am going to try to tap in to businesses to see if they want to give these kids an apprenticeship in their business next year. The recommendation will be base on their attendance, punctuality and behaviour at BGA.” “Michael a Khaleda attended a catering course based in a working kitchen where they produced a meal for 20 odd people. They worked really hard and were excellent. Michael wants to be a chef in the future.”
