PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Andrew Weisberg The High Holidays always seem to come so quickly, and this year not only have they arrived at a blink of an eye, but they have arrived along with my unexpected presidency. Without time to consider what my tenure would look like, I have found myself writing a Rosh Hashana message to the Beth Torah community. Of course, staring at a blank page for a very long time, I began to reflect about how I even got here. I remember attending a Shabbat service in 2004 at Beth Torah with my wife as we were looking for a synagogue to call home. The congregation we had belonged to was no longer fulfilling our needs. When the services were over, we both knew this was the place for us, and since that time we have been a part of the Beth Torah family. I have served on the Executive Committee for a number of years and have always been proud of my association with Beth Torah. Thank you to Rabbi Yossi and Cantor Ben for all you do to ensure that Beth Torah remains the role model and standard by which all other synagogues are judged. It is no doubt that it is because of their hard work and dedication, Beth Torah continues to be the only synagogue in Toronto that maintains its membership. I look forward to sitting back and enjoying what I am sure will be a meaningful and inspiring journey through the High Holiday season. Your services manage to be relevant and thought provoking to our diverse congregation. The Rosh is On, now in its third year, is just another example of how progressive and all-inclusive the Beth Torah community is. As we head into the New Year, the Event committee is hard at work putting the finishing touches on the Inspire Your Future campaign. This event being held on

October 22, 2017 will celebrate the ongoing success of our Shul, our programs, thanking our heroes, the chai celebration of Rabbi Yossi, the welcoming of Cantor Ben, discussing the successes of Beth Torah Congregation and revealing the future plans for Living Jewishly. One of the Inspire Your Future goals is to raise funds for the development and expansion of Beth Torah programs and project offerings to members. Although I have only been the President of Beth Torah for a short time, I have had the privilege of serving on the Executive committee in various capacities for many years, working with and beside very talented and dedicated volunteers all of whom have a deep commitment to providing the best Shul experience possible for our congregants. Thank you to you all for your unwavering support as I start my tenure as president. Of course I must also applaud the efforts of David Goodbaum, Lawrence Janit, Shannon Harrison, and Arlene Silver for ensuring the shul runs so smoothly. Rosh Hashana to me has always meant family and traditions. Growing up I remember the nervous energy buzzing around the house as my mother prepared our favorite dishes and the Yom Tov must-haves. These traditions have continued in my own home where Fay cooks and prepares our own favorites. I know that by learning from example, these traditions continue to pass down to our daughters Alanna and Leni. On behalf of Fay, Alanna, and Leni, I would like to wish our family, friends, and the entire Beth Torah Congregation a happy, healthy, prosperous, and peaceful New Year. Leshana tovah tikatev v’tichatem, Andrew Weisberg

RABBI’S MESSAGE Rabbi Yossi Sapirman, Senior Rabbi I am writing to wish you all a happy new year. I actually mean more than happy. I mean truly fulfilling, a year of accomplishment, after which you can look back and feel the difference you made. I wish you a year of security; not only personally, but also for your comfort, in which you have no storm surge floating your car down the street, no loss of power for days and weeks on end, where the roof on your home stays intact and your windows have not shattered from the winds impact. I wish you more than just health; I hope it’s the year in which you heal from your wounds, a year in which your efforts to soothe your hurt are triumphant, a year in which your scars disappear. A year in which the anger and hate that sometimes consumes you is replaced with empathy and forgiveness, a year in which you no longer spend more time on your fears than on your dreams. I wish you a year of family love. May this be the year that family division be replaced by unity, old resentments by newfound honesty, moments of warmth, and consideration, and the feeling of being part of instead of apart from. May your year bring good times, may you never know the fear of deportation, the cold of the refugee, the longing for reunion, the angst

-6-

of separation, or the desperation of war. I wish for you a good year, without fear of racial or religious hatred, without persecution for your choices, gender, or looks, a good year in which the land we call home remains a safe haven, a beacon of hope, a land of opportunity, one in which all of us are given care and consideration, equally and unconditionally. May the year to come bring better news, better diagnoses, more wealth and achievement. May it be a year in which we forgive ourselves for imperfection, love others with their faults, make new friends and keep our old ones. May this be the year we live fully, be grateful and considerate of how much we have and aware of our life’s abundance. May it also be the year in which we recognize those who are not as we are, be it in our family, our community, city, country, or the world. May this be the year we make the changes that we wish to see. May this be the year we remember how it used to be for our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, many of whom were refugees, persecuted, impoverished, scarred, and shattered. May this be the year we remember how they put all of that brokenness and bitterness aside to allow us to have the sweetest years imaginable. May this be the year, Amen. Shana Tovah, Rabbi Yossi, Michol and Allegra

CANTOR’S MESSAGE Cantor Ben Silverberg, Cantor I have been a Blue Jays fan for as long as I can remember. Family time spent at old Exhibition stadium seems so long ago now, but still makes me smile when I reminisce. Since 1993, I, like many of you, have endured lots of disappointment - that is until 2015 and 2016 when the Jays almost advanced to the World Series. In 2016, I traveled with Karen to Italy, but made sure to set my PVR for the 11 Jays in 30 programs. Literally the day we returned I watched five-and-half hours straight of summarized Blue Jays games. 2017 has been a disappointment for the team pretty much the entire season, but the game is still great and a loyal fan watches the team play when they are up and when they are down. 2017 also brought some renovations to our home. I’m sure many of you can relate: what was supposed to take one month took four months. What was supposed to be seamless was stressful and aggravating. 2017 will also be a year I will never forget as it’s the year Karen and I welcomed Emily Brooke into our lives. Having a daughter has brought us so much joy and love, and in her young life she has taught us so much about perspective. The Blue Jays are Toronto’s team, my team, and entertaining to watch. But Emily is much more fun to watch. An unevenly installed floor caused me so much stress and aggravation, but in the grand scheme of things means nothing compared to what a husband and wife go through as they live out nine months of pregnancy and the eventual birth of a child. I have learned that watching your daughter eat her first mushy carrot is more meaningful than watching Donaldson hit a home run. All of us should stop every day when we get mad or irritated by the small things that crop up and remember what is truly important. Remember who in our world loves us, and who we love and would be lost without. I wish you all a very sweet New Year – Shana Tova! Sincerely, Cantor Ben, Karen and Emily

DAVID GOODBAUM Event Coordinator and Building Management There’s a saying that as you get older, the days get longer but the years get shorter. How true! With all the b’nai mitzvahs, JWRP meetings, weekly conversion classes, hosting the Hartman lectures and all the Chenstochover Society’s events and let’s not forget the delicious kiddushes-especially the one welcoming Cantor Ben Silverberg to the Beth Torah community and the one celebrating the birth of Cantor Ben and his wife Karen’s beautiful daughter Emily... well... before I could even catch my breath, another year had come and gone. In the midst of all these memorable moments, the building was being improved by adding additional classrooms and air conditioning in the basement, one of the washrooms was made fully handicap accessible, the main entrance was re-paved and a new and enlarged playground was installed on the north lawn. Being a part of all these events and activities was very meaningful but one particular event touched me personally. I’m referring to the “Peace of Mind” program that Beth Torah participated in. Sixteen Israeli ex-soldiers came to our community where, with professional guidance, these brave men began the difficult process of confronting and overcoming their emotional trauma. There are no quick fixes. This will be an ongoing journey of recovering from their emotional wounds and dealing with the scars resulting from their military experiences. Candace and I were privileged to house two of these men and as we opened our home, they in turn opened their hearts. A bond was forged, one that I believe will be a lifelong connection. We were moved and changed by the experience and I will be forever grateful that Beth Torah afforded me the opportunity to take part in this transformative experience. As I take a deep breath and look over my shoulder to the year that was, let me wish each and every Beth Torah member a joyous and meaningful New Year.

ARLENE SILVER Office Manager and Director of Lifecycle and Membership September is a time for new beginnings, the weather changes, school starts, the sweaters come out and it is apple season in Ontario. Apples always remind me of Rosh Hashanah, drizzled with honey, for a sweet year. September is also a time for huge happenings at Beth Torah. The synagogue is abuzz with preparations for membership renewals, High Holiday tickets, families start panicking that their Bar or Bat Mitzvah is taking place this year, other families come to the stark realization that they have to book their child’s B’nai Mitzvah even though it is three years away. All these are wonderful milestones to celebrate with your family and friends and we are so happy to be part of all these plans. I am so pleased to speak with you to try to make the holidays and simchas as easy and enjoyable as possible and I look forward to helping you celebrate. On behalf of myself and my family, and my colleagues at Beth Torah, I wish you all a happy, healthy and sweet new year.

SHANNON HARRISON Executive Assistant to Rabbi Yossi Some of you might know that Beth Torah generously allowed me to spend three weeks in Jerusalem this summer studying at the co-ed USCY Yeshiva. It was a blast. I made new friends, improved my Ivrit, agonized over Talmud, and got a terrible sunburn. Days after returning to Toronto, they invited me back to spend the school year with them as a Fellow. I was mortified. How could I leave a job I adored, a community I cherish, and an apartment with grandfathered-in rent? I said thanks but no thanks. “Maybe next year” I offered, “when I’ve had time to think this through and formulate a budget.” But next year wasn’t available. “It’s a one-time grant,” he said. “We won’t be able to offer this opportunity again. If you come, it needs to be September. This September. October at the latest.” October at the latest. It was already the middle of August. Two-and-a-half months to get a visa, secure student loans, find an Israeli apartment, put all my stuff into storage… and oh, yeah, support the shul office through our busiest season. It’s been a whirlwind getting organized, but I am excited to be learning and endlessly grateful for the support of the clergy and congregation. I will miss you every day. Thank you for being so kind to me for the last three years. I’m looking forward to coming back next summer and rejoining the team, if you’ll have me! Please add my “Israeli account” on Facebook, I would love to stay in touch and let you know what USCY is up to. And if you visit between now and June, let’s grab a shawarma. TODAH RABAH Alex Boué Dear friends and family, I am back from Israel and wanted to let you all know about the Maccabiah Games. The trip was a wonderful experience and something I’ll never forget. Walking

into

Jerusalem’s

Teddy

Stadium in front of 25,000 people and seeing Israel was amazing. The environment of participating in the games, while meeting and competing against athletes from across the world, is what I enjoyed most about my trip. While we didn’t finish as well as we would have liked, playing and scoring in this tournament was a moment I will cherish forever. Staying in such a world-renown city like Jerusalem for the games made my trip very immersive; visiting the old city countless times, buying fresh fruits in the Mahane Yehuda market and practicing at the famous Beitar Jerusalem F.C’s training ground. Although this trip was meant for me to compete in the Maccabiah Games, I was also delighted to have the opportunity to explore the country. During my 4 week stay in Israel, me and my teammates toured the country—visiting places such as the Jordan River, Masada, the Dead Sea, and Tel Aviv. These experiences taught me about Israeli history, and allowed me to discover Israel. I would never have been able to do this if it wasn’t for your kindness and generosity. I thank you all very much for donating and sending thoughtful messages of encouragement. When I think of Israel, I think about memories, bonds and friendships which will last with me a lifetime. Thank you for all your support these past months, Alex Boué

Year of Living Jewishly Bar/Bat Mitzvah Program 2017-2018

For almost 20 years, it has been the vision of Rabbi Yossi Sapirman to introduce Bar/Bat Mitzvah aged children to the principles of Judaism, by learning about its values, and by living them as well. Rabbi Yossi's novel approach to this program provides students with a rewarding appreciation of Jewish culture and heritage, and a memorable B’nai Mitzvah experience. The Year of Living Jewishly program for Bar/Bat Mitzvah aged children emphasizes that this is the first year of their adult education, not the last year of their childhood education. We actually treat them like adults, and their Judaism is experienced as an adult. The curriculum provides an experiential, modern and self-challenging approach to teaching and learning Judaism. What is unique about YLJ? The best gift we can give to our children is to educate them so they engage their Jewish identity beyond their Bar/Bat Mitzvah. At YLJ we do this by repackaging the values and moral lessons of Judaism that were taught to them as children into guiding principles for meaningful Jewish living in adulthood. After the year of study and hands on involvement in Jewish causes and issues, our B’nai Mitzvah are ready to move forward into adulthood with practical and mature ideas of Judaism and how it is relevant and applicable to life in our modern times. Students have the benefit of a personal relationship with a dynamic and teen-aware Rabbi, and a Jewish experience and connection to last a lifetime.

It is Rosh Hashanah and the motif of honey runs through; My daily preparations, and in all things that I plan to do. I try to keep my thoughts sweet, and keep them going, I try to keep the happy spirit throughout my life flowing. But as I listen to the news, and other tales of woe, It is sometimes difficult for my spirits not to be low. And when the sweetness threatens to leave my mind; I think of the people in my life, so wonderful and kind. I count my blessings with a marvelous family, and special friends; And suddenly my burden is once again lifted, and the feeling ends. The New Year is a time to review one’s life, and atone and plan; With an eye to an abundance of sweetness, and negativity to ban. In that spirit, I wish you the sweetest, and most meaningful, of holidays; And when times become challenging may you strive to see beneath the haze. May sweetness abound, and pervade our very beings in actions and thoughts; And throughout our lives may we realize... we are the “haves” not “have-nots”! Shanah Tovah from Roslyn & George Keri

With an educational approach that maximizes student engagement through arts-based programming and multi-modal instruction, we recognize that today’s kids call for a departure from the learning styles of yesteryear. It’s time to shake up the old Hebrew School framework, and make way for learning in a modern and digital era. When learning is interactive, relevant, hands-on and most importantly…COOL, the results speak for themselves.

A child’s B’nai Mitzvah is one of the most significant milestones in the life of a young Jewish boy and girl. It is a time when B’nai Mitzvah celebrants reflect upon the meaning of Judaism and its values, and how it relates to them in relevant and personally meaningful ways as they embark upon a new stage in life. Beth Torah’s B’nai Mitzvah program engenders in each young adult who is approaching this important lifecycle event a heightened sense of Jewish identity, responsibility, and maturity.

Approximately every other Sunday during the school year, 9 a.m. to noon

Eastern Canadian Region United Synagogue Beth Torah Youth Programming 2017 - 2018 United Synagogue Youth (USY) is the North American teen engagement program of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. USY offers year-round social, community service and Israel engagement programming for teens, as well as summer travel experiences. USY teens benefit from meaningful and immersive Jewish experiences that help them integrate Jewish values and rituals into their lives. ECRUSY - the Eastern Canada Region of USY - offers programming through chapters at USCJ synagogues in Greater Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Hamilton, and London as well as at regional and international programs. Within ECRUSY, Kadima (Grades 6-8) has its own programs focused on environmentalism, social action and tzedakah, while USY programs (Grades 9-12) emphasize leadership development, social action and relationship building.

Chapter Events For even more fun between regional events, ECRUSY chapters have programs once a month. All of these events are teen planned and led with advisor supervision. With chapters throughout the region, there is sure to be one near you! Check out www.ecrusy.org to find your closest chapter.

Summer Programs USY Summer Programs are exciting, fun-filled journeys that take Jewish teens across North America, Israel, Europe and beyond! Participants discover new cultures, form life long friendships, give back to the world through social action, and return home transformed, with greater confidence and a deeper sense of their unique place in the world.
