Abstract The Industrial Zone (known as Al Madineh El Sina’iyeh) of Sid el Bauchrieh, is located in the Eastern Suburbs of Beirut. Designed in the 70’s as a Mono-functional space of production, it utilized the presence of cheap available labour in the area, transforming the zone from independent agricultural lots to one large private industrial Project. With time, the zone officially designated as industrial began to grow, receiving more independent craftspeople and manufacturers in need of affordable workshops. Consequently, the industrial space of production began to transform, going from open plan typologies for mass production, to smaller workshop units for customized production. Furthermore, the adaptations done to the architecture in the industrial site were achieved by the workers and craftspeople themselves, as they used their own production tools and skill. Today, the industrial zone is economically frail and workshops have been shutting down. Whether it is due to the government’s lack of protection of these small industries, the increasing expenses of the rent, or the limited clientele of customized production, the industrial Project - 40 years after its initiation- seems to be reaching its end. However with the emergence of new digital manufacturing, a critical opportunity to transform this monofunctional area, into a next generation maker or craft based center for learning and production becomes perhaps the best way to ensure its survival. The thesis proposes a scenario where conventional industry is coupled with advanced manufacturing production and training, helping to foster and recover local production, prototyping and invention in close proximity to living. This project takes place in the industrial zone today, considering the scenario in which the industrial project contract has ended, and the once merged plots are returned to their owners. A group of craftsmen and workers, supported by a technical school initiative and a savvy plot owner decide to invest collectively andcontinue their own industrial project. The project of the industrial zone includes: -A technical school -Housing for workers and students -Offices/Maker spaces for rent
