P U B L I S H E R course that makes me a grandma, again! So excited, so grateful! More details to come. “His appearance was like lightning, and His clothes were white as snow. “ Matthew 28:3 Easter is nearly here. Just like Spring, it’s a time to remember that with death, there is life. I love that truth because it is an affirmation of hope. It’s a wonderful time to not only clean out the cobwebs in the closet, but also in our bodies and minds. I definitely need a New Year resolution re-start. Wishing you a happy and blessed Easter and Passover! Next stop is Mother’s Day. Show your mom how much you love her… even if you don’t like her sometimes . It is in giving that we receive.

Hello dear readers, It has been a busy season and now we Spring forward! Fare thee well northern friends. You’ll have new things to enjoy here when you return. Safe travels back home. It is hard not to notice the growth in St. Lucie, just in SLW and Tradition alone. Traffic has become a little crazy around here. I happily anticipate the opening of Crosstown Parkway all the way to US 1. Months have gone by without me mentioning that I am awaiting a new star on the horizon. Olivia will have a baby brother in the next week or two and of If you do not receive or have the time to pick up our magazine please log onto blmmag.com or email us at betterliving@betterliving.com for convenient home delivery.

A few years ago Better Living published an article about the Southeast Florida Honor Flight. With Memorial Day coming, I am so pleased to include in this issue Honor to the Living and the Fallen. “Honoring service and sacrifices”, honor flights are taking place this month and next. Thank you veterans and your families. Before we know it, the summer time will be here. There are only two more months of school. Time flies, live in today, smell the roses, walk in the park, look for inspiration, have fun! Most of us like to win prizes. Check out what we have going for June on page 13. We’d love to hear from you. See you in our BIG Summer Issue. God bless,

Holistic Health Burning the Candle at

O

Over the years expressions change but the meanings still prevail. Call it OCD, multitasking, workaholic and/ or perfectionism most people today are burning the candle at both ends.

s d n E h t Bo

Unfortunately I was guilty of this condition. It didn't happen until I was older but I found myself needing coffee to start my day, sugar to continue it and wine to finish it! I hated being in this daily cycle of having to depend on what I believe as legal drugs to survive. Luckily with my years of nutrition knowledge I broke the horrible cycle but it wasn't easy. Even today when I share my story with customers they use their grandparents as an example of why they should be able to eat whatever they want and live to 100. I do notice that they can't use their parents as an example since our foods conditions started to radically change in the 50's. For instance, in 1953 a bowl of spinach gave you enough iron where as in 2007 it took 51 bowls to provide adequate iron. That is just one nutrient! Our bodies need 90 essential nutrients to function properly to maintain 100 trillion living cells. Being deficient in just iron can lead to over ten illnesses. Including anxiety and depression. Our bodies are dictating our choices instead of our intellect. The toxicity of the air, water, food, and the drama of life is definitely taking its toll on us. It is possible to be the best version of yourself. For each of us the path will be different, usually that is why all the self help books and diet plans may seem overwhelming. I usually hear the excuse that the information keeps changing why

12

even try? Information, just like us is always changing and we are all trying to be like someone else. Just focus on the basics. My favorite expression is “Don't buy the fancy curtains if you haven't built the foundation first!” Here are some basics that we seem to keep overlooking to try to find that new quick fix. 1. Start your day with a large glass of high quality water. (Not from a plastic bottle) 2. Early morning brisk walk taking deep breaths. (Any distance helps) 3. Eat Veggies! Organic is better but just eat them (Please) 4. Avoid eating in a hurry or in your car. Relax and chew. 5. Do not eat if you are upset Please be patient with yourself, your body has the ability to heal you just be kind and loving to it. by Joanne Augusto Owner of Nutrition World 101 N. ur bodies have an endocannabinoid system (ECS). It's very similar to our cardiovascular and immune system. The ECS influences your hormones and immune cells and acts like a regulator to create balance in the body and mind. It modulates the function of neurotransmitters to create a sense of relaxation, joy, focus and inspiration. The system relies on specific nutrients, called cannabinoids, to function properly. The body can make it's own cannabinoids but it can also be deficient in them. CBD or Cannabindiol, does not get you "high" unlike the other well know ingredient of marijuana tetrahydrocannibidiol (THC).

Long list of benefits: Anxiety disorders, seizures, reduces acne, aides in sleep, blood pressure regulator, psoriasis, eczema, pain relief, neuropathy and many more. We carry a water soluble CBD that has a 90% PLUS ABSORBENCY RATE. Water soluble means it is easily absorbed by water (our bodies). Which means you will need less of the product. While we do carry oil/tincture, almost everyone chooses the water soluble simply because of the absorbency rate. We carry: gummies, pain cream, soaps, lotions, and pet supplies, all organic, 100% natural. All of our CBD products are made in the USA. Got Glasses? Here’s Why!

T

There are three reasons why people need vision correction. Eye size, eye shape and age. The first two problems cause light entering the eye to not focus properly on the retina. The retina is the lining in the back of the eye that takes a picture and sends it to your brain for processing. If the eye is larger than it should be, you are nearsighted and the image stops short in front of the retina. This means your vision is good up close. If your eye is smaller than it should be, you are farsighted and the image is behind the retina. This means you see better far away, but in severe cases may need some correction for distance too. If the front of your eye is more curved, then you have astigmatism and have trouble seeing both near and far. Finally, the hardening of the lens inside the eye causes a loss of focus ability up close. This is a natural part of the aging process which will slowly decline over several birthdays.

point and then give you a few options that you may like better. This is the infamous “is it better one or two” part of the exam, but sometimes it can look the same. The lenses are actually bending (refracting) the light that is entering the eye to focus on the retina to correct the problem. Once the best correction is determined, there are several options to help you see clearly. Glasses (technically not made of glass very much anymore), contact lenses and Lasik surgery are options that can provide high tech function and fashion. In fact, today’s options are numerous and better than ever.

These refractive “errors” are “corrected” by the prescription your doctor determines during the exam. Traditionally the doctor will shine a light in your eye to see what error or errors (yes they can be in combination) you are experiencing. This is because that’s what eyes do... they focus light. The doctor will come up with a very accurate starting

Each of us has our own way of celebrating Memorial Day to honor the memory and sacrifice made by America’s veterans. their costs. Just about anyone from 18-65 can become a guardian to a veteran, as long as they meet some guidelines outlined on the website www.honorflightsefl.org. It is an enriching and powerful way to give back to those who laid their lives on the line for their country.

everyday citizens realize who they are, greet them and thank them. Some veterans never received even one thank you after their return from the wars. They also have the opportunity to tell stories with other brothers in arms on the trip with which they share a powerful military bond.

On flight days, veterans and guardians meet at 4:30am at Palm Beach International Airport where they board a chartered American Airlines A321. Once in Washington DC, the four police-escorted motor coaches of veterans and guardians tour Arlington National Cemetery to witness the Changing of The Guard Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns, the Air Force Memorial, the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Memorial and Vietnam War Veterans Memorial.

Upon the return home to West Palm Beach, around 8:30PM, the airport is filled with crowds of people, flags and signs to welcome the group of veterans home for a reception of mega cheering they most certainly never received long ago. This is yet another way the community can take part. All are invited to Operation Homecoming, although tissues are recommended.

Besides visiting these hallowed places, the veterans receive handshakes throughout the day as

Dr. Shamsher Singh, a Port St. Lucie dermatologist, is one remarkable member of the community who honors veterans through a myriad of ways for Honor Flight. I went on my first flight as a Guardian in

2012 and it has been a History lesson from then onwards. I have had the privilege of being the Guardians of veterans from Pearl Harbor; Battle of the Bulge, Okinawa, Iwo Jima, B-17 and B-24 fighter pilots, and submarine hunters, Battle of Anzio and on and on, states Dr. Singh. “To date I have gone on 25 Honor Flights, 23 with World War II veterans and 2 with Korean War veterans. Most of the veterans I have accompanied have been my patients and we stay in touch. Unfortunately 15 of the 25 are now gone.” Besides volunteering as a guardian, Dr. Singh supports fundraising efforts every year. This past year alone, he has held his annual Tennis Tournament at Legacy PGA Village, a Golf Tournament at Indian Hills, a show at the Sunrise Theater, and also sponsors the St. Lucie County Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year and chaperone as guardians.

Dr. Singh says, “I really try to help them out as much as I can. We need sponsors. Honor Flight is run by 100% volunteers, without a single paid person our staff. We do not even have an office. All the planning is done from our homes. It is a labor of love.”

Every veteran flies absolutely free of charge and every dollar of fundraising efforts goes toward the mission. Each Honor Flight trip costs $100,000, which includes chartering the airliner, the four motor coaches, three meals and commemorative hats and shirts for each veteran. Each flight

transports 80 veterans, 80 guardians, six paramedics, and Flight Team volunteers. Wheelchairs are provided because of the amount of walking required to see all of the monuments. Being a guardian allows one to spend time with living history. Singh agrees,

“We are losing the WWII veterans so fast and they aren’t teaching this history in most schools. That is the sad. They are missing out on what these people fought for. It would be worth your while taking a trip to Washington on an Honor Flight.” If the guardian fee is not in your budget, consider getting sponsors. What you experience and learn from spending the day with a veteran is priceless. Southeast Florida Honor Flight meets every other Monday night at

My WW2 Veteran, 95 yr old Mr. Mike Samodai, who was a naval officer on the USS GUADELCANAL in WW2 with Senator Dole at the WW2 Memorial.

6:30PM at the Martin County Fire Rescue Administration Building, 2nd floor, at 800 SE Monterey Road in Stuart. Volunteers are needed to help at fundraising events, and on mornings and evenings of flight days.

Southeast Florida Honor Flights for 2019 are scheduled for April 13, May 11, September 21 and November 2. https://www.honorflightsefl.org/

What’s the Solution? Trauma Can Lead to Drug & Alcohol Addiction PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder, is not just experienced by war veterans. PTSD is the body’s looping reaction due to not processing trauma. What is unknown to most individuals is that you experience trauma at many points in your life and don’t even realize it. Trauma comes in many forms, with sometimes an accumulation, or specific life events triggering a PTSD reaction.

Physical abuse, sexual abuse, divorce, a death in the family, a move, a breakup, a reprimand at work, and even an offhand comment can be traumatic. Also, what is traumatic to you may not be to someone else…it’s how you interpret an event that makes it traumatic (or not). Unfortunately, PTSD has been linked with developing alcohol and drug addiction. • People with PTSD are two to four times more likely to have a substance use disorder National Comorbidity Survey • Half of all people receiving inpatient treatment in a studied substance abuse center met PTSD criteria Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology Unfortunately, we can’t stop traumatic events from happening. It’s our framing of and response to things that happen to us that we can control. We can learn better coping skills and try to “take life as it comes,” without worrying about the past or the future too much. If a shift in perspective doesn’t improve our thinking and responses, seek professional help.

Pastor Mike’s Corner View One of the most difficult and yet most powerful lessons we can learn in our journey through life is that God will make a way for us through our pain and trials if we call on him for help. You can trust him to be present with you, and active for you, when horrible things happen, as well as when you simply feel stuck between your disappointing circumstances and your hopes and dreams for life. You may be clueless about what to do, but God knows exactly what to do, and when to do it. The story, and the testimony of millions throughout history, is simply this: God still shows up in very powerful ways. God will make a way for you if you call on him. But this is where things sometimes get difficult. Most people cannot see God’s way for them because they have difficulty believing there is a way. They fail to believe a way exists out of their particular trial or tragedy of life. There is good news! I believe that you can find your way through life when you exercise your faith in God by following the instructions given to us in His written word. (The Bible) Just as you would exercise faith in a doctor by following his prescription to get well physically, you can get well emotionally and spiritually by following God’s instructions. God is there for you. God Bless, Pastor Mike Recovery Pastor @ Morningside Church Director of Community Relations @ Foundation Wellness Cntr.

If trauma has been driving a drug or alcohol addiction, you will need immediate help. Not just to deal with the consequences of withdrawal, but to find and address the root cause of addiction. Mike Beath is the Community Relations Director at Foundations Wellness Center. He can be reached at (772) 212-8490. For more information, you can visit their website at www.foundationswellness.net

“Christian radio” is many things, and not all of them great. I’ve worked in different radio formats, but have spent most of my time on Christian pop stations. I’ve seen all the sides of it.

L

I know the artists, the record companies, the other Christian radio hosts, and the listeners. We’re all messed-up in our own uniquely horrible – and wonderful – ways. I can find things to criticize about the industry and, while I’m at it, about myself. But this, at least, is no longer one of those things: Radio songs are somehow “too positive” and too focused on grace, love, joy, light, and mercy. Years ago, I made this argument myself. After all, most of the Psalms aren’t overflowing with happy themes. I love theological discussion, and I’m not a particularly emotional person. I fully realize that life includes much suffering.

30

K, I get it.

We should expect it. So why doesn’t Christian music on the radio reflect it? Well, here’s an answer: It’s radio.

Radio is a particular medium. People use radio, just like they use any tool. It turns out that people on the way home from a tough job do not use the radio to hear a song about sorrow and judgment. (We can foist it on them for their own good, but they have these darn buttons they can click.) And it’s not just the music; there’s plenty I don’t say on the radio, because people listen to the radio a certain way. I know I have to get to the point, and fast. I know I can’t overwhelm people with a lot of numbers while they’re driving. I know I shouldn’t talk about myself for ten straight minutes, because people didn’t turn on my station for that.

Should art reflect the whole of life, what it means to be human, what it means to be a fallen creature in a fallen world? Absolutely. Does this mean Christian music radio needs to reflect all of that? No, because it’s used a particular way. One other thing: If you want more songs about judgment, please feel free to write them. Write great ones: Plaintive ones. Profound ones. Poetic ones. Please do it. I’ll listen. But do know that judgment, itself, is not remarkable. The world swims in it. It’s in the moral air we breathe, in and out of church, in every culture, and has been since the Garden of Eden. But grace, well… that’s different. It’s THE difference, actually. Grace is “amazing”, or so I’ve sung. Maybe there’s a reason people are, perhaps, more drawn to that song than any other. And maybe that’s not so bad after all. ~ Brant Hansen
