After being a teacher (“that was another life”), Leonard Villafranco followed his dream, attending law school at night while raising his children. After practicing law on his own for 5 years, Francisco Garcia met Villafranco and last April they created a partnership providing legal services to the Treasure Coast. Service is their motivation. They strive to “do right by our clients and do right by the community,” explains Villafranco. Garcia adds “My desire to help people and help the community brought me here.” They demonstrate this commitment through action, both active in area churches. Villafranco is on the Board of Directors for MISS Project (Mothers, Infants, Striving for Success), provides pro bono work for Florida Rural Legal Services, and has been President of the Port Saint Lucie Bar Association. Garcia has also provided pro bono legal work for Florida Rural 2
Legal Services, is on the board of his neighborhood’s property owners association, and is involved in several Hispanic business groups. He also volunteers as coach for his sons’ soccer and lacrosse teams. Combining their extensive experience and backgrounds allows them to serve you concentrating on Family, Business, and Criminal Law and Personal Injury. Garcia speaks Spanish (coming to the US from Uruguay at age 5). Villafranco is happy to say “we have been well received in the community and are getting great results. We are building a strong foundation with our clients.” Garcia adds “Every day is a new experience.” They are conveniently located in Port Saint Lucie so wherever you are, in Martin, Saint Lucie, Indian River, Okeechobee or Palm Beach County, Villafranco & Garcia will help you with all your legal needs. P U B L I S H E R Hello dear readers,
M
ay is our anniversary month. This is the perfect time to say “Thank You” to all our readers and our valued advertisers! Just the other day, I received a letter from a reader. It touched my heart as she wrote from the hospital recovering from bronchitis. Terri shared with me a little about herself and told me how much she loved reading Better Living. What a pleasure I receive facilitating a connection between residents, visitors and the business establishments in our community!
Olivia and I would like to wish you a very happy Spring Time! I have been thoroughly enjoying Olivia’s first smiles, giggles and rolling over on her own. Thank God for FaceTime and video sharing! What’s on your to-do list this Spring? Clean house? Help others? Spring brings New Energy and New Resolve. Scratch those broken New Year’s resolutions. Today is a Fresh Start. For a little inspiration and insightfulness, kick back and enjoy reading our new column, The Life Coach. Better Living welcomes back Annette M. Robbins, CPC, CELMP. There are many more great tips and information from all our columnists, so read on. It’s Chimpathon time! In this issue we highlight our primate friends, Save the Chimps, so get your walking shoes on! Take a look at the Events Calendar for more exciting special events going on in April and May. Sending wishes for a Happy Mother’s Day to all moms, a blessed Memorial Day for those who served and their families, and a fond farewell to our snowbirds. Until next time: Seasons change, but one thing remains; His love never fails, never gives up and never runs out! with several high quality chocolates including Scharffen Berger, Valrhona, El Rey. Additionally, the cream we use is a fresh cream and not the commonly found ultra pasteurized. When we make a coconut cream, we grate a fresh coconut to make the cream. In our prepared food department, we have the same philosophy, so all our chicken, beef and vegetable stocks are house made. Also, our (when available) lamb, beef and chicken for sandwiches are roasted in house.
We’re committed to finding and supporting the best of local and regional producers. We passionately seek out the freshest and tastiest, raised consciously and well: glorious produce; all-natural dairy, meats and fish; gourmet and everyday products. Our bakers and cooks are similarly devoted to producing the finest in artisanal breads, pastries and prepared foods.

Acupuncture
without needles
When you hear the word acupuncture, what comes to your mind? To me, it’s as simple as circulation, but the word is broby Dr. Stuart Shipe, ken down into two parts. Acus DAOM, MS, RPh is a Latin derivative meaning “needle” and puncture referring to the piercing of the skin. For thousands of years the Chinese have been using acupuncture as a means of healing the body of disease and pain. They have mapped out the body with a system of energetic channels that carry energy called “Qi” and Blood. Along these channels are small points called ‘acupoints.’ This is similar to a garden hose used to water flowers that has a kink in it. The life-giving water cannot flow to the garden and the flowers will wilt and eventually die. The acupuncture channels carry Qi and Blood to all the internal organs. The acupuncturist determines which
10
1605 NW Federal Hwy., Stuart, FL 34994, 772-398-4550
of the more than 2000 acupoints have become blocked and stimulates the point to free the obstruction. The acupuncturist has many ways to stimulate those acupoints as we’ll see. Stress Causes Blockages Our bodies contain two key branches of the nervous system, the parasympathetic (rest & healing) and sympathetic (flight & fight/stress). It is the sympathetic system in the stress phase that appears to cause most health problems in humans. During stress, hormones are released and blood moves from your organs to your muscles to prepare for the engagement, shutting down immune, digestion, and reproduction systems. Long term stress combined with cumulated trauma produces an elevated state of upregulated stress resulting in chronic pain and disease. The Body Electric The body’s cells are filled with positively and negatively charged electrolytes and minerals. The movement of these charges causes a bio-electric current to constantly circulate in our body. Modern science has been able to discover that very small microamperage (millionth of an amp) with a DC current closely approximates the naturally occurring bio-electric currents in the cells and therefore more deeply “taps” into the bodies’ nervous systems. Microcurrent enhances the body’s tissue healing and repair.

Chimpathon 2016 More than just the race, Chimpathon brings the community together at the Finish Line Festival with music, exhibitors’ booths promoting environmentally-friendly products, and of course food! Enjoy the Chimp Challenge obstacle course and a traditional rock climbing wall with the purchase of a $10 wrist band. Volunteers and exhibitors are needed so everyone of any capability can contribute.
Runners during our Chimpathon
Yes, Treasure Coast - Chimpathon is back! April 17, 2016. Some of you may be asking, “Is this a 26-mile race for our primate friends?” No! This walk/run is like no other in the world. You’ll see the chimps on their island homes and they will see you! Many of the chimps respond to the event with curiosity and excitement; some also join in on the fun by running along their island habitats. Doc, this year’s Chimpathon mascot, may even be spotted running in his unique upright running style. Nancy Aadland, race director, explains. “Chimpathon is a 16-K (10 mile) nationally sanctioned event (U.S. Track and Field Club certified course) to raise money for Save the Chimps – a unique sanctuary for chimpanzees who were previously used by research laboratories, the entertainment industry, and the pet trade.” Nancy emphasizes, “If you’re not a runner, don’t be dismayed. All ages, shapes, and sizes make up the mix – last year from 22 states and 4 foreign countries. There are water stations each mile and bike riders monitor every participant.” Participants will receive a race bag including a moisture wicking t-shirt and every finisher receives a medal, each year unique; a true collectible. What a great activity for groups of family and friends – have fun while supporting a worthy cause. After the 2015 inaugural race, many the 563 runners expressed their excitement to participate again the following year.
14
The story of Save the Chimps is fascinating. Save the Chimps’ founder, Dr. Carole Noon, came to St. Lucie County to create the Sanctuary for chimpanzees rescued from medical research, entertainment, and the pet trade. The design is simple but ingenious. Chimpanzees cannot swim so 12 manmade “islands in the sun” allow these special chimpanzees to enjoy the outdoors without cages or fences! Imagine living decades in a 5 x 5 x 7 enclosure in a laboratory and then coming to this wonderful “retirement home.” Your donations go directly to the Sanctuary here in St. Lucie County to provide the highest quality lifelong care for the chimpanzees. Most of the chimps were taken from their mothers at birth and never had the opportunity to learn how to survive in the wild. The annual cost of care for one chimpanzee is $16,000 (thus the symbolic 16K Chimpathon), and there are many ways to donate. For example, when you Adopt-A-Chimp for $25 a month you provide care for one week and you feel a personal connection with the friend you are helping. You receive a certificate, biography, update, and a beautiful portrait suitable for framing. The Sanctuary is not open to the public but each year there are three opportunities to visit – two Member Day events and the Chimpathon race. This year’s February Member Day sold out so you’ll want to register early in time for the next one - September 17, 2016. You’ll tour the Sanctuary, have a Q&A with the veterinarians, learn about the history of the Sanctuary and hear the incredible stories of the residents.

Observing the chimpanzees thrive in an enriched, loving environment is truly an honor.” Triana Romero, Director of Communications: “The chimpanzees show great love and compassion each day. They are forgiving, accepting, and inspiring.” Go online at www.savethechimps.org to register for Chimpathon and watch the video to see the incredible story. How to Live Your Longest Life Possible Some may not want to live to 100 and that’s okay, but how about making sure you live all your years as vibrant as possible. After studying centenarians it is believed if you apply a few simple lifestyle practices you too can live your longest possible life.
1. Have a Garden
Almost all of Okinawa’s famed centenarians share the same hobby: These long-living inhabitants of the well-documented Blue Zone grow (or once grew) gardens. Not only is it a calming, low-impact physical activity, it can also provide a steady stream of homegrown fresh produce.
2. Less Electronics
Here’s a frightening factoid: Every hour of TV you watch after age 25 cuts your lifespan by about 22 minutes, according to 2012 research from The University of Queensland, Australia. They also found that people who average six hours a day in front of the boob tube died nearly five years sooner than people who didn’t watch any TV.
3. Eat Less
The women from Okinawa, Japan enjoy the longest disability-free life of any population on Earth -- and the rest of the world has been looking to the population for its longevity secrets. One is the Okinawan habit of beginning meals with the phrase, “Hara hachi bu,” which means, “Eat until you are 80 percent full,” Dan Buettner, author of The Blue Zones, a book on the science of longevity, told New America Media. Restricting calo-
B A G E L B R O T H E R S O F N Y. C O M
ries and never overeating is one reason that the Okinawan population has such a large concentration of centenarians, Buettner explains.
4. Live a Spiritual Life
In WebMD’s 2008 survey of centenarians, 84 percent say that staying in touch with one’s spirituality is “very important” for healthy aging. Whether it’s being part of a faith-based community or maintaining your own meditation practice, finding what spirituality means to you could help you enjoy more of your golden years.
5. Find Reasons to Laugh
In a 2012 study published in the journal Aging, researchers from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Yeshiva University identified certain personality characteristics that a group of 243 centenarians had in common. Among them? A love of laughter. “They considered laughter an important part of life,” the lead researcher said.
6. Find a Life Purpose
In the centenarian hotspot of Nicoya, Costa Rica, residents cultivate a plan de vida, which means “reason to live,” according to the website Blue Zones. “This sense of purpose often centers around spending time with and providing for their family,” the site says. “This often results in centenarians retaining an active lifestyle, reaping the benefits of physical activity and exposure to the sun.” According to Blue Zones, a 60-year-old Costa-Rican man has roughly twice the chance of living to 90 as a man living in the United States.

It all makes perfect sense now! Stressed spelled backwards is “Desserts!” Coincidence, I think not! We are actually predisposed instinctually to reach for that “comfort food”, all those feel good foods we think we just can’t live without! Is it actually the Stress that we’re addicted to?? Has stress consumed our lives so much that we have become attached to it? Is it now a part of our identity? What does stress drive us to obsess about? Think of all the things you would have the energy to do if you weren’t drained by habitual stress? Does the
20
mere thought of slowing down and enjoying some chill time actually stress you out? Could that be why you reach for the Sugar, to help you keep going? Going wide open on all cylinders, full speed ahead again and again, until the crash happens again. Okay, let’s experiment. Close your eyes for a few, take a deep breath and release... try to completely relax your body and quiet your mind. Just Breath that thought in. How does it feel? How long were you there before your brain wondered right back to that never-ending to-do list that robbed you from being at peace.
Just imagine being more present in your own daily life. Stress response acts on the same triggers in the brain as other addictions like shopping, gambling and Sugar splurging (proven to be 8 times more addictive than cocaine)! There really are realistic strategies to change the way you see yourself and the stress you accept in your life. Without practice however, de-stressing seems like such a struggle. So ask yourself this, what thought, belief or unhealthy habit are you willing to let go of to make more room for peace on your path?
