Letter from T H E P U B L I S H E R Hello dear readers,

C

an you feel it? Did you notice that the red birds are singing? Yep, that’s a spring thing! I love the spring flowers and perfect temperature for enjoying the outdoors. I have to remind myself to take it one day at a time and enjoy one moment at a time because spring doesn’t last long here in “FL”. My next intention this year is to unclutter. “Out with the old and in with the new” as my mom used to say. I am one of those people who wrestle with “the out with the old” sometimes. But, I will continue to practice “keeping it simple”.

Our snowbird season is nearly at its end. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Passover, Blessed Easter and Happy Mother’s Day. I consider myself fortunate, always meeting new people from all walks of life. Learning and witnessing people helping people right here in our community brings to mind a certain meaningful scripture. Proverbs 27:17; “As iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another.” It’s the give and take that lifts us up. Want some examples? Read about the volunteers donating their time to 4-H and the youth in our own neighborhoods. Maybe you have been thinking about filling some of your time; 4-H could be a great fit. I believe that when we give we will also receive. Just check out the growth of Grace Way Village on page 10. As a reminder, the Bug Guys Charity Golf Tournament for Grace Way is coming around in May. Sign-ups are in progress. I want to mention that there is a new treat in town. We don’t have to travel anymore to experience the relaxation and healing of reflexology. The D.A.O. Foot Spa has opened in SLW. Cheers from me! Better Living & Marketplace welcomes Darrell Winfree® our new columnist and local expert in commercial real estate. He will be keeping us in the loop about the progress and growth in St. Lucie. I hope you will join me in taking a moment this Memorial Day to remember our beloved veterans. God bless them and their loved ones! Final thought: We are perfectly imperfect. See you in June God Bless, If you do not receive or have the time to pick up our magazine please log onto blmmag.com or email us at betterliving@betterliving.com for convenient home delivery. Please remember to support your local small businesses. If you are involved in a community program that is making a positive difference, please contact me @ Valerie@blmmag.com. You just might be the next story. “The Lord gave the word; Great was the company of those who published it” Psalm 68:11

The TASTE

LoLa’s seafood

“Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets”. Ever heard that before? Well, what THIS Lola wants is for you to have the local experience of the best-tasting, freshest seafood in town. And that is what you, the customer, will get! Although there are four Lola’s Seafood in the area, the most convenient for us is located at 962 Saint Lucie West Boulevard, across from King’s Isle. It opened August 28, 2012. Old friends Charlie and Laurie (native New Englanders) and Chef Bernard and Lise (from Canada) reconnected through a chance meeting in a big box home improvement store a decade ago. The four had all been in the Fish Business a long time, so they put their heads and talents together and opened the first Lola’s in Stuart in December of 2007. Lola’s Seafood is “Chef-Owned”, which means the freshness and quality of the New England-style seafood are held to a high standard. Their truck from New Bedford,

MA arrives with the very freshest product twice a week. Delectable belly clams, succulent Ipswich steamers, the REAL New England lobster rolls – all await your arrival. Chowdah! Of course, they have homemade New England. But how often are you able to find genuine Manhattan red chowdah around here? And sometimes, if you’re lucky, you’ll show up on a day when Bernard has just prepared his Rhode Island Clam Chowdah, with a clear broth.

chopped tomatoes and their own orange basil vinaigrette. They have both domestic and imported beers – Shipyard from Maine, New Castle, Sam Adams Fat Tire – and Stella & IPA on draft. The wine selection is VERY respectable. And the desserts! Oh, my goodness! Beignets, crème Brule, peach cobbler, key lime pie. And a special treat – Kermit’s chocolate-dipped key lime pie on a stick – all the way from Key West! Stop by – they’re open until 8:00 pm on Sunday and Monday and until 9:00 Tuesday through Saturday. You will have a wonderful taste experience. Food made fresh – just as you ordered – just special for you!

The salads are all made fresh hourly with mixed baby greens, corn salsa, feta cheese,

And do ask to meet Lola when you’re there – you’ll be in for a surprise!

Reflexology, also known as zone therapy, is an alternative medicine involving application of pressure to the feet and hands with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques. It is based on a system of zones and reflex areas that purportedly reflect and image of the body on the feet and hands, with the premise that such work effects a physical change to the body. The theory behind reflexology is that these areas correspond to organs and systems of the body. Proponents believe that pressure applied to these areas affects the organs and benefits the person’s health.

the body. The therapist will use various techniques that include holds, finger pressure, kneading, rotation and rubbing. Reflexologists posit that the blockage of an energy field, invisible life force, or Qi, can prevent healing. Anther tenet of reflexology is the belief that practitioners can relieve stress and pain in other parts of the body through the manipulation of the feet. One claimed explanation is that the pressure received in the feet may send signals that ‘balance’ the nervous system or release chemicals such as endorphins that reduce stress and pain.

When done by a skilled practitioner, reflexology is a deeply relaxing treatment with benefits that can be felt throughout Introductory Offers are $10 Off Regular Price. 1 hour Foot Reflexology (15 min neck, shoulder and 45 min foot reflexology) $39.99 1 hour Combination (30 min foot reflexology and 30 min body) $49.99 1 hour Body Massage $59.99

TuTTo Fresco

A visit to Tutto Fresco, snuggled up next to the PGA Village clock tower in St. Lucie West, is truly a cultural and culinary delight. Sit back and prepare to be pampered in either the elegantly appointed dining room, the casual grill room, or the relaxed outside patio, recently covered and appointed with fire pits and heaters for those chilly evenings. Co-owners (and cousins) Joe Gambina and Pasquale Lamarra came to Port St. Lucie from South Jersey twelve years ago, opening the first Tutto Fresco down on Port St. Lucie Blvd and Westmoreland. Buoyed by the public’s enthusiasm for their cuisine, they decided to come to their current location on St. Lucie West Blvd, just over I-95, in 2012. Pasquale is the Head Chef. He laughingly shares he has been in the restaurant business since he was a day old – he got the first day off. His family owned several very popular establishments across South Jersey from Atlantic City to Cherry Hill. The cousins’ mission is to “Bring Justice to Italian food in America”, and they have succeeded. Tutto Fresco translates to Everything Fresh. Start your meal with the mussels. Joe and Pasquale take their mussels seriously, adhering to the New Jersey adage that if at least half a dozen don’t fall on the floor on the way to the table, they haven’t put enough on the plate. Or perhaps you would prefer the Langusto – a savory combination of lobster, diver scallops (U-10 size, meaning they’re so large, there are under 10 per pound) and jumbo shrimp. Who would think to order steak at an Italian restaurant? Please do. Their Steak Sinatra, with a gorgonzola crust and a red wine demi-glace, can be cut with a butter knife and melts in your mouth. Dietary restrictions? Just let the kitchen know – vegan, gluten-free, Chef Pasquale can accommodate them all. Joe takes his commitment to the community seriously. His passion is the Boys and Girls Club, to whom he donates bikes at Christmas. He also participates in the Homes for Heroes mission. His staff all know his belief that Family is Everything and appreciate his compassion and understanding. Join us any Friday or Saturday evening for a late bite and live entertainment on the patio. 9501 Reserve Blvd. St. Lucie West 772.464.8988 tuttofresco www.tuttofrescopsl.com

Dual benefits are provided all golfers who participate in the bug guys Charity Golf Tournament: They will experience a wonderful day on the greens while providing much need finances to Grace Way Village, a local nonprofit that provides all resources without charge to area residents in great need. A guiding principal is to love their neighbors as themselves. Each time the doors are open, this is obvious to all who enter. Children in crisis are provided the opportunity to shop for clothing through the Hope’s Closet program. All area social service agencies, including public schools, refer children for assistance. Those who are hungry can come for a hot meal from the Matthew’s Café program every Sunday night, as well as a free lunch on Wednesdays when Hope’s Closet is open. Stop by any

10

Wednesday for a tour, and you will see both programs in action. Your heart will be touched. Exciting news for all involved at Grace Way Village is that 2017 is the year to move forward with a Family Transitional Living Facility, starting first with a capital campaign. The need for this facility is great. At the end of the 2016 St. Lucie County school year, there were 708 homeless children registered in the public schools. Bearing in mind that most homeless families won't register their children due to fear of having them removed from their care, the numbers are much higher. This project is being overseen by business professionals who are serving on Grace Way Village’s board, led by a strong business plan that will protect the vision and implementation of the facility.

More can be learned about Grace Way Village by visiting their website, www.gracewayvillage.com. Participation is always needed in donations of finances, children and teen clothing, children’s books, and nonperishable food. Both programs offer a variety of options for volunteering. Businesses and individuals who are interested in finding out more about the Community Care Partnerships that are available at Grace Way Village should email info@gracewayvillage.com. The partnership benefits all involved, showing community care. Grace Way Village is looking for members of the community who are interested in being a part of this effort. Interested individuals may email info@ gracewayvillage.com for more information.

A

s a St. Lucie County resident it’s hard not to notice the bug guys’ trucks driving in and out of our neighborhoods. But, who are they and where did they come from? The bug guys are a locally owned pest control company with refreshingly high goals and standards. This explains why the trucks seem to be doubling by the day.

Co-founders Jim Pond and Kenneth Stanley have over 30 years of experience in the corporate pest control industry. Both Jim and Kenneth shared the frustration of not being able to truly take care of their customers (while working for the larger pest companies). That is where the idea of “the bug guys” began. They created a new look and service for the pest control industry right here in the Treasure Coast, all with the goal of establishing personal relationships with their customers.

Within a few short years “the bug guys” have already created a reputation of honesty and offer a quality pest control service with professionalism and integrity and a guarantee to back it up. the bug guys Guarantee: Our Commitment to our customers is “YOU”. • We off a 100% satisfaction guarantee. • The bug guys' staff will respond to all customer requests within 24 hours. • We hire only the friendliest and most professional technicians in the industry. • All the bug guys staff receives continued education on a monthly basis to keep up with all the latest and greatest pest methodologies. • We give our customers a safe and effective pest control service. • We provide a pest free environment by offering unlimited callbacks (including any interior or exterior concerns). • The bug guys are so confident that we offer a 100% money back guarantee. • There is no yearly contract on our pest services. With the bug guys, there is no risk, no contracts, and no bugs. So call the bug guys to schedule an appointment today.

Sue Munyan (far left) with 2016-17 4-H Club Leaders

LEARN BY DOING

S

St. Lucie County 4H Facts & Impacts

ue Munyan grew up on a dairy farm in upstate New York and participated in 4-H briefly as a child but it was not ever her intention to become involved in 4-H as a career; she earned her degree in Business Marketing. Fast forward and Sue has been the Extension Agent for 4-H in St. Lucie County for 30 years! The best part of Sue’s job: She doesn’t have a “typical” day. Depending on the time of year you may find her at the St. Lucie County Fair, training 54 adult volunteer leaders for the 23 clubs in St. Lucie County or overseeing the School Enrichment Programs and Summer Day Camps that she also administers (utilizing the expertise and resources of the University of Florida/IFAS). What has kept Sue going for 30 years with this exciting but demanding schedule? Her first-hand experience that the 4-H way – Learn By Doing – changes lives and benefits not only the youth members, their families and volunteer leaders, but our entire community. B A G E L B R O T H E R S O F N Y. C O M

4-H focuses on developing knowledge, practical skills, responsibility and awareness, public speaking, leadership, service, teamwork, and creativity. How? Through each youth member’s project - these projects are the vehicles that assist children in developing these qualities. Record books are part of a completed project. Youth log their time, expenses, what they have learned, and what they might change in the future. Besides individual projects, each club completes two community service projects a year. As a club they choose the service; this gives them experience making decisions as a group and the majority rules process as they vote and everyone takes part under the guidance of the committee of officers and parents. Finally, being a club member requires commitment they cannot miss more than 3 meetings/activities (if they do they are really missing the point). Sue’s Extension also administers School Enrichment Programs, to reach students who cannot participate in a

13

4-H Did You Know . . . • There are currently 23 clubs in Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie with 452 active youth members ranging in age from 5 to 18. These clubs are overseen by 54 volunteer leaders. • 4-H is very budget-friendly: State Registration Fee is only $20.00 and club dues range from $10 to $50. (To make the field trips possible each club has fund raising activities). • Most clubs meet from September through May during the school-year. • 4-H projects are displayed at the St. Lucie County Fair, Science Fairs, or elsewhere. Some advance to State, National, and even International competitions.

4-H'er Brayden Adams and his 4-H market steer project

4-H club, and two Summer Day Camps; these allow the youth to have experiences in fields such as water quality and Indian River Lagoon education, the 4-H Farm, gardening projects and embryology. Helping Sue make all this possible are the Adult Volunteer Leaders who provide guidance and encouragement for the youth in their club. They organize the club work days and field trips. For instance, a small animal club has work days learning how to care for rabbits, chickens, guinea pigs, etc. When individual support is needed they visit a member’s home to assess a market animal’s health, weight gain, etc. Over the past 30 years Sue has seen children of her former 4-H members become Volunteer Leaders. Many parents and grandparents become Volunteer Leaders because they want to stay involved and realize the difference it made in their lives and in their children’s lives. Sue is grateful: “We could never sustain 23 clubs without our Volunteer Leaders who have full-time jobs and volunteer their time on nights and weekends to keep the clubs operating.” So, with 4-H’s multitude of positive outcomes: Youth developing a healthy self-image, excelling at school especially in the areas of science, having leadership experiences and becoming committed to improving our communities, more children need to benefit from the 4-H experience!

CONCLUSION: More Volunteer Leaders are needed in order for more clubs to operate! 4-H needs you!

The 4-H Pledge

4-H volunteer leaders will undergo background screening (to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants - youth, parents, families, paid staff and volunteers). 4-H program specialists for the School Enrichment Programs meet Sunshine State Teachers Standards. You will also undergo training on how to work with children, how to run club meetings and how to teach the youth officers to run meetings, and how to run educational activities. Sue will meet with you personally to explain the time commitment and criteria and standards to adhere to. If you are a “grown-up “4-H'er” or just enjoy working with young people, or if your family is ready to join the exciting world of 4H (4-H is a family event): Contact Sue Munyan by e-mail (sjmunyan@ufl.edu) or call 772-462-1660 for information. www.facebook.com/SLC4-H www.stlucie.ifas.ufl.edu/4-H.html To learn more about the University of Florida/IFAS (Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences) and the nationwide land grant university system visit www.ifas.ufl.edu.

Surprising to some, the rising trend in lending rates has brought a rising trend in lending activity. The Mortgage Bankers Associations’ latest weekly reading on mortgage lending shows an increase in both purchase and refinance activity. We’re not terribly surprised. Many potential borrows wait for a potential pullback in a flat market. They anchor to a past rate. But when rates begin to pull ahead and show no signs of a pullback, they switch to action from inertia.

BUSINESS GROWS IN SPACES

by Darrell Winfree

We close or lease a property in South Florida every 25 minutes. When it comes to real estate in South Florida, no one has more experience or success than The Keyes Family of Companies.

Realtor

One the most important aspects of your business s is location, location, location. Sometimes finding the perfect space to lease is easy, but more often patience is required. Being prepared and informed will make smoothl your search go more smoothly. With that in mind I’d like to offer some dos and don’ts to finding the right space for your business. DO – Have your business history and financial records available. Landlords typically request information about the length of time in business and its financial health.

KEYES.COM • KEYESLUXURY.COM • KEYESCOMMERICAL.COM • KEYESPROPERTYMANAGEMENT.COM

DON’T – Assume that rates in one location will be similar in another. That prime location you are eyeing may be more costly than you expect. Prices vary widely from one location to the next based on demand.

Keyes Commercial About the property: 150 Chamber Court St Lucie West This is an outstanding value for a fully built out medical space. This turn-key property is available for many uses, and is priced for an easy on the pocket business location. There is also a possibility for subleasing space, be sure to ask about this option. This is a must see offering in one of the most sought after areas in St Lucie County. Darrell Winfree, Commercial Realtor: I came to Florida from New Mexico, where I retired from 20 years of military service (Air Force) in Logistics. I earned a Master’s degree in Anthropology and began a time of working with Native Americans and ranchers and companies, to help them find ways to get past their differences for a common goal. I have earned positions on two county boards, the Transportation Planning Organization and I’m the District 1 Commissioner Dzadovskiy’s pick for the St Lucie County Historical Commission. Finally, I became a Guardian in the Guardian Ad Litem program for the 19th Circuit Court. I specialize in Commercial Real Estate, warehouse/flex The St. Lucie space and Office space. DO – Research zoning codes. Certain businesses are restricted to particular locations. Knowing where your business can and can’t be located will narrow your search. DON’T – Sign a lease before securing all permits or licenses required for your business. A lease is a significant investment—you don’t want to find out after the fact that you won’t be able to open your doors. The St. Lucie Commercial Team Direct: 772-349-7278

from The Single Mom and Self Care by Amanda Carroll

Y

ou don’t need anyone to tell you that your job as a single mom is a challenge. But you do need reminders that it’s worthwhile and that you shouldn’t neglect time with your primary support system, God, or with yourself. Amanda Carroll encourages thousands of Christian FM listeners with practical encouragement. She shares the following thoughts about the important of self-care during life as a single mom. You are not damaged goods. You are not ruined. You are the head of your household and now more then ever you have to be strong, healthy, alert, and plugged in. Take care of you so you can take care of everyone else. It’s contagious. Your kids are watching every move you make, and every move you don’t make. Do you want them to think about their life with a single mom as hard and destitute and depressing? Or do you want them to remember it as fun, rewarding, and full of fantastic life lessons that made them better human beings? YES!!! They should

28

feel proud, respectful, and grateful! If they see you caring for your body, eating well, cleaning up, and working hard to better your family then they will respect themselves too! You are a mother. You show up to the games. You show up to the practices. You are present. You are involved. You are strong because you are taking great care of yourself. Plus, you know where the good guys are? They are not at the bars when the dad has the kids. They are on the baseball field playing catch with their children hoping to find an amazing partner just like you! Self Care isn’t narcissistic. Self Care is about valuing yourself. It’s about engaging in daily activities in looking after yourself in a positive way so that you can face uncomfortable circumstances like a boss. It’s hard. I get it. It takes so much effort to raise children solo that you put yourself last. Please stop. Self Care is about a daily practice of caring for yourself so you can take care of others.

Connect with God. This is the MOST important tip of all. If you find yourself limited by your circumstances, debilitated by fear, or simply stuck in life, prayer is your way out. You were not meant to be alone. There is hope. “Do not be afraid; you will not be put to shame. Do not fear disgrace; you will not be humiliated. You will forget the shame of your youth and remember no more the reproach of your widowhood. For your Maker is your husband—the Lord Almighty is his name—the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth. The Lord will call you back as if you were a wife deserted and distressed in spirit—a wife who married young, only to be rejected,” says your God… with deep compassion I will bring you back.” (Isaiah 54:1-6) Amanda Carroll can be heard weekdays 3pm-8pm and Sunday 6am-10am on Christian FM. You can learn more about her ministry at amandacarroll.org.

HOLISTIC HEALTH

by Joanne Augusto Owner of Nutrition World

WHY DRINK ORGANIC APPLE CIDER VINEGAR?

M

any people ask me what me what my longest top selling products is, hands down the answer is always Braggs Organic Apple Cider Vinegar.

Science has now backed up what we hippie nutritionists have been saying for years, your guts health determines your entire body’s health. The fancy name for the gut is your micro dome in case you see that term.

This is the most popular way:

• 1 to 2 tsp. Organic Honey, 100% Maple Syrup, Blackstrap Molasses or 4 drops herb Stevia is the most popular recipe for it, (optional) to taste. I love just diluting it in my water bottle, or using as a salad dressing. It is also great for external use. Soothing bath, hair rinse and great for skin blemishes.

Guiding the Treasure Coast in Health

Detoxiication, Relaxation, Weight Loss, Heart Health, Pain Relief, Anti-Aging & MORE!

If you’re thinking right now that you could never drink it you might be surprised how many yummy ways there are to consume it.

• 1 to 2 tsp. Bragg Organic Vinegar in 8 oz. in Purified water

in THE ARCADE BUILDING

• Raw Food Vitamins • Homeopathy • Convenient Super Foods

Recently it is on every social media app but don’t let that fool you. This is one of the original products that started the health revolution.

Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar Cocktail Delicious, ideal pick-me-up at home, work, sports or gym. Perfect taken 3 times daily – upon arising, mid-morning and mid-afternoon.

From the Desk of Bob Leone, Business Broker

BUSINESS SALES BUSINESS VALUATIONS

What is going on in the Main Street Business Market Place? BizBuySell.com, the Internet’s largest business-for-sale marketplace, reported today that annual small business transactions reached record levels in 2016, topping 2015 2015’s totals by 8.6 percent and 2014’s previous high by 4.6 percent. e full results are included in BizBuy Sell's annual and Q4 2016 Insight Report, which aggregates statistics from business-for-sale transactions reported by participating business brokers nationwide. A total of 7,842 closed transactions were reported in 2016, the highest yearly total of small business sales since BizBuySell rst started tracking data in 2007. is total connrms the positive assessment of the 2016 small ma business market by business brokers as recorded in BizBuySell’s December survey. According to the survey, 63 percent of respondents experienced more deals in 2016 than in 2015. Primary factors for the reported growth include an improving small business environment, more owners looking to sell, more qualiied buyers on the market and better nancing options. 2016 nancial indicators echo the sentiment of an improving small business environment. e median revenue of sold businesses grew 5.2 percent from $449,462 in 2015 to $472,798 in 2016. Median cash ow also increased, up to f $107,551 from $102,000 the year prior. ese growing nancials likely enticed more buyers into the market, spurring transactions.

Pastor Mike’s Corner View "Let Go and Let God Work"

“Surrender yourself to the Lord and wait patiently for him.” Psalm 37:7 (GWT) Surrendering your life means: • Following God’s lead without knowing where he’s sending you. • Waiting for God’s timing without knowing when it will come. • Expecting a miracle without knowing how God will provide. • Trusting God’s purpose without understanding the circumstances.

Despite the increased demand in 2016, owners did not respond with higher prices. e median asking price remained at from 2015 at $225,000, while the median sale price increased a mere half a percentage point to gu put the $200,000. ese gures average sale-to-asking price ratio at 92 percent. Such a strong ratio indicates the market is becoming more balanced, with both parties coming closer together in their assessment of fair market value. “After several years of strong business-for-sale activity, it is great to see even more growth in 2016,” Bob House, President of BizBuySell.com and BizQuest.com said. “Not only are more small businesses changing hands, but healthier businesses put the new owners in a great position for continued success. is bodes well for the market, but also points to a bright future for small businesses overall.” I will continue to update you on the market pulse.

You know you’re surrendered to God when you rely on God to work things out instead of trying to manipulate others, force your agenda, and control the situation. You let go and let God work. You don’t have to always be in charge. Instead of trying harder, you trust more. You also know you’re surrendered when you don’t react to criticism and rush to defend yourself. Surrendered hearts show up best in relationships. You are not selfserving, you don’t edge others out, and you don’t demand your rights. The most difficult thing for many people to surrender is their money. Many have thought. “I want to live for God but I also want to earn enough money to live comfortable and retire someday.”

Retirement is not the goal of a surrendered life, because it competes with God for the primary attention of our lives. Jesus said, “You cannot serve both God and money.” (Matthew 6:24 NIV) and “Wherever your treasure is, your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21 NIV). The supreme example of a selfsurrendered life is Jesus. The night before his crucifixion Jesus

surrendered himself to God’s plan. He prayed, “Father, everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will, not mine.” (Mark 14:36 NLT). Jesus surrendered himself to God’s will. He prayed, “God if it is in your best interest to remove this suffering, please do so. But if it fulfills your purpose, that’s what I want, too.” Genuine surrender says, Father, if this problem, pain, sickness, or circumstance is needed to fulfill your purpose and glory in my life or in another’s life, please don’t take it away!” This level of maturity doesn’t come easy. In Jesus’ case, he agonized so much over God’s plan that he sweated drops of blood. Surrender is hard work. In our case, it requires intense warfare against our self-centered nature. I pray that we all would try to be more like Christ especially as Easter approaches and we remember what the sacrifice that was made on our behalf. God Bless, Pastor Mike
