Dear Readers,

M

Th󰡥 momen󴁴󰡳 󰑉 󱁬󰡯󰡯k to!

ost of all, I hope you and your loved ones are safe and in good health. This, our Spring Issue, is a Special Edition of Better Living & Marketplace. “The COVID-19 pandemic is causing massive disruption to the health and safety of communities around the world.” I myself have swayed back, forth and in-between from nervous, worried, stressed, aloof, calm, cool and hopeful. As I write to you, I am following instructions and guidelines of our local and federal agencies. Truly, I have everything I need. Probably most of us do. In this day and age, there are many ways we can get our needs met. Family, friends and neighbors are a beautiful thing. If you need something, ask. If you can help someone, ask. We will get through this! It is put on my heart to be a bridge between our local businesses and you, our readers. I couldn’t agree more with our President that small business is the engine of our country. These next few paragraphs are from an email I received. This hit me so strongly that I had to share it. ‘People everywhere are concerned for their local small businesses, and uncertain of how to help. Supporting local businesses in your community right now is imperative. “Due to COVID-19, businesses will shut down, some are adapting, and others will be less impacted.” Each of us has the power to act, but sometimes we just don’t know what to do. Small acts can make a big impact and may seem insignificant on the surface. Proposal: Buy gift cards if available. Or, if you are a local business under duress, reach out to your clients and make it easy for them to purchase in advance from you today. Think of local restaurants, physical trainers or massage

Of course this will not fix everything, but small acts will go a long way.’ – Mike McDerment, FreshBooks

Letter from

As a wise old owl told me many times, “Everything will be okay… no matter what.” Things may not look how we want them to, or how we think things should be, but really, it is just simple. Whenever I stray, I will bring myself back, and keep my eyes on the prize, Jesus! I believe in silver linings. I believe in the excitement of the wrapped present. I will shift my focus to all the things that I never seem to get to. I am looking forward to a thorough Spring Cleaning. Perhaps read a book. Create something new. I will do my best to limit my time on the computer and instead, listen to the birds sing. I hear them now. Isn’t the way to the other side to go through it? “…the old things are passed away, behold all things are made new.” Corinthians 5:17 have included some resources and information from local and government agencies. Happy Easter, Happy Passover, Happy Mother’s Day and Happy Memorial Day!

the publisher therapists. Many of our restaurants have expanded their delivery area and are using curbside pick up. Can you pre-purchase five lunches today? Or three sessions?* How about the businesses that you can order from online, or services that you can keep the appropriate social distance? Many of us are experiencing such financial difficulty that we are not in a position to give. But for those of you who are, and who want to help and don’t know how, I would say, support the owners you believe in. If you have the ability to pre-purchase from even one owner, please go ahead and do that. Better still, after you pre-purchase, share your act with others in hopes of inspiring them to do the same. More than anything right now, owners need to feel your support. Aside from all else, let them know they matter to you.

I

Be well and see you soon! Kindest regards,

“Cynics might say, “what if the owner just pockets the money and doesn’t honor the gift down the road?” To that I say, I believe in owners. 99.999% of owners will do the right thing. Why? Because they love their businesses, feel a duty to their customers, are concerned for their employees and respect their communities. Again, I believe in owners.” – Mike McDerment, FreshBooks

BETTER LIVING & MARKETPLACE MAGAZINE

In this world, we will have struggles, but we still have God’s wonderful promises. One of the greatest promises is the one of eternal life… Which is the greatest protection against fear we know. Finally, as Christians, we’re here to make a difference for others. We are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus. We are called to show love to those who suffer, to bring peace and comfort, and to seek opportunities to share the Gospel of God’s Grace. t Christian FM, sharing hope, encouragement, good news, and peace is how we plan to help in the days ahead. People are going to need hope! They need peace! So Christian FM will be here to encourage. After all, we go into every home, every car, and we reach beyond every locked door on the Treasure Coast. Maybe more than ever, it’s important that we believers shine bright, when people fear darkness.

would result in less information coming in. The average blink lasts one tenth of a second. In an average day the eye blinks 20 thousand times per day. Your eyes produce tears to keep them healthy. Although eyelids wipe dirt away, everyone knows wipers don’t work without fluid! The eyelids produce natural tears on their own to work together in harmony. On a daily basis, this fluid drains out through tiny little holes at the inner corners of your eyelids down into your nose and the back of your throat. If the eyelids fail to protect, there is another gland that kicks into overdrive to rinse and flush the eye. This is why your nose runs when your eyes overwater because the system is overloaded. Despite this natural process, scientists still don’t know why tears are produced for emotional reasons. In addition, tears also contain natural antibodies to fight infections. I hope you’ve enjoyed learning a little more about the amazing eye. I have more fun facts to come!

BY LEONARD S. VILLAFRANCO, ESQ.

Drivers, you are merging wrong: Experts say that being polite is causing traffic jams.

We opt plan

D

riving in heavy traffic is stressful enough, and merging only makes it worse. Especially when drivers play by different rules. You see that a lane is closed ahead and two lanes will be narrowed to one. Some drivers try to be polite and merge early by getting to the correct lane as soon as possible. Others don’t have a problem zooming ahead and “cutting” in line. However according to most experts, it is the driver being polite that is actually making traffic worse than the driver who jumped ahead. The American Automobile Association (AAA) recommends using the “zipper” approach to merging. The zipper method, where drivers merge later, is similar to that of a zipper’s “teeth.” Just as a zipper smoothly comes together, a zipper merge keeps traffic flowing in both lanes and organizing the merging process. “The zipper merge has shown to keep traffic moving more smoothly, compared to a less structured approach,” the AAA has said. A zipper merge is recommended because leaving a lane unoccupied as a result of early merging is inefficient. It only makes traffic heavier, most proponents say. Through grade school we all learned not to cut in line. Lots of people think that zipper merging is cutting in line. However zipper merging is for the greater good, even though most people still don’t see it that way. No matter what, it’s important to remember that merging is not a race. When merging, your goal should be to maximize a smooth flow forward through traffic. Your goal is not to ‘beat’ other drivers.

hese are some “CRAZY” time we are in. This Corona virus has us making changes that we could never imagine. It’s times like these that I need to really stop and review what is really going on in my life and where am I putting my efforts and thoughts. It is in times like these I need to remind myself that God is bigger than any challenge that I might be going through. One of the biggest tools at my disposal is the “Serenity Prayer”. It is a prayer that has been one of many foundational tools in most recovery programs around the world. “God grant me the serenity to accept the thing I cannot control. The courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference”. There’s more to this prayer, but these first three parts “It is in times like are used throughout the world in the rooms of recovery. these I need to We find ourselves frustrated beremind myself cause we cannot control this virus. It robs us of our serenity. I ask God to that God is grant me the serenity to accept whatever is coming down the pike. And lastly I need to know the difference between what I can and cannot change. Too many times we try to do or be what we cannot. This is when I need to let go and let God. He knows how this is going to play out and we don’t. I need to be obedient and seek Godly wisdom during times like these. My prayer is that we all will do “due diligence” and heed the instructions of our leaders, draw closer to God and know that He is our refuge and our strength in times of challenge.
