Q: How can Chiropractic help me? A: Chiropractic can assist you by maintaining your spine’s proper alignment. Every organ in the body is under some kind of neurological (nerve) control. So doesn’t it seem sensible that when the nerve impulses are compromised by misalignments, the nerve ow is altered, and your body doesn’t function at its optimal level? Q: What is an adjustment? A: An adjustment is a gentle correction of a mis-aligned joint that relieves pressure on nearby nerves and help restore proper movement into that joint.

With more than 57 years of combined industry experience, The Bevan Wealth Management Group is dedicated to providing comprehensive wealth management advice.

Letter from P U B L I S H E R

Hello dear readers,

A

re you ready, set, school?! That’s right“time flies” and now teachers and students prepare for this coming school year. We have a couple of important dates listed on our Community Events Calendar, so take a look. I’m not sure about you, but to me it feels like we’ve already been through the dog days of summer… better keep the air down, we’re just heading into August.

On a personal note: During the past few months, I spend a bit of time with my sister and her family. That was a lot of driving but worth the time spent. A semi-short trip to N.Y. became extra special. Have you ever visited places that you haven’t been since you were much (much) younger? That is what I did; set out on an adventure with my closest cousin to Catskill Mts., N.Y. the Catskill Mountains where she and I spent our summers long ago. Nature, weather, scenery and the smell of the air at its finest! It was wonderful, thank you Lord. It is my pleasure to present our Summer Issue of Better Living & Marketplace. This is the first issue of our new bi-monthly schedule. In this issue read about Tykes & Teens, an outreach mission of mental health services for local children. Then, Save the Chimps has shared with us “A Tribute to Shane.” Some of you may remember our article on the sanctuary last year. I felt compelled to share the expressions of “farewell” to their “beloved friend.” To make your reading experience more enjoyable and informative, I am excited to introduce our new column “A Better Way to Health.” Dr. Stuart Shipe DAOM, PA, a local health care provider, will be sharing helpful medical information each issue. In addition, now joining us is Bob Leone, Acquisition Expert. See his column with helpful tips on business brokering and great information, thank you Bob. We hope you take advantage of advertisements of local businesses, great savings with excellent content and special pages along the way. I thank all the highly talented contributors who make Better Living & Marketplace Magazine truly better for our community. Always, I am grateful to you, our reader!

All the best,

by occupational or financial issues, bad relationships, poor diet, accidents, drugs, or lack of exercise. Don’t wait for symptoms to be your first sign of illness. Get your body checked out. Traditional Chinese doctors determine the patient’s health by natural means we’ll discuss in the next column.

Most of the people I talk to tell me that they’re healthy. As an American society influenced by the ‘wonder pill’, we have been brainwashed into thinking that if we don’t have symptoms, we must be healthy. From a holistic medical point of view this is far from the truth. Let’s look at health from both points of view though and let you decide. Merriam Webster’s dictionary defines health as “having optimum function and not just the absence of symptoms.” This definition leads us to question, “if symptoms do not define the state of health, and function does then what is function? There is a gradient scale between having 100% optimum function and death. Based on traditional Chinese medicine principles, 100% function means the person has perfect circulation; the internal organs are balanced, blood is flowing to each any every cell, and the body has a vital life force continually moving called “Qi” (chee) keeping us at ease. If there is any interruption in this flow of energy or blood, the organs are affected and health is lost. Based on contemporary modern medicine, 100% function is based on the absence of analytic and diagnostic findings like MRI, CAT scans, or blood tests. If the person’s lab work comes back within normal limits, the person must be healthy, sometimes despite their complaints. People are lead to believe they are healthy as long as their “numbers” are good despite having to depend on medication to keep them that way. For example, based on the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) statistics, more than one-third of you reading this article are considered obese, and at an increased risk for high blood pressure, higher cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease. These disease problems are caused from chronic inflammation and poor circulation. Consider an engine oil light that illuminates only when the oil level has reached a critical low level. It warns us that unless corrected our engine will fail. If the engine operated at 100% optimum function with five quarts of oil per the manufacturers’ specifications, does it operate as effectively with 3 quarts of oil despite not triggering a warning light indicator yet? Do you know someone diagnosed with cancer or diabetes and never knew they had the disease? People lose function every day from stress brought on B A G E L B R O T H E R S O F N Y. C O M

Do you hear the cries of your neighbors at night? Does it keep you awake? They are lost and without hope, but it is easy to forget their constant pain. Did you know there are more people who have never been inside a church or synagogue in your community than there is in any other area in the America? It’s true. A recent Barna study showed of 117 markets surveyed across America, the five county areas encompassing the Treasure Coast was number one per-capita, for never having attended a church. There is no denying the great need for the hope of God is this community; but many of the hopeless would never think to step foot in a church…that’s a foreign concept to them. So hope must reach them in other ways. While there are thousands that will never enter a church in our community, 95% of those hurting hearts will turn on the radio this week. The purpose of Christian FM is to provide hope and encouragement by sharing the Word of God on the airwaves in our community.

The letters we receive are humbling, showing that God is reaching hearts and changing lives every day through the songs and testimonies on the radio. We each must do our part though. Will you share hope with your neighbors in need? Jesus gives hope and grace to all who come to Him, and His open arms turn none in need away. Out of love for hurting brothers and sisters we must share about the good news of a loving God, and we ask that you stand with us to do the same. Be it in showing love in the grocery aisle, stopping to help a neighbor while walking your dog, supporting nonprofit ministries like Christian FM in their outreaches, or taking the time to invite your golfing partner to church…there is a part you can play in sharing love. We have an incredible opportunity as we are living in the greatest mission field in America. Let us seize the day.

Financial Planning is not an event, but rath er a process. During our life time, we are constantly in the process of making, managing, investing, and spending money. More often than not, we make our way through day-to-day, without taking the time to either plan or coordinate our financial affairs. Financial issues, problems, and decisions are addressed as they arise. Many people, who would not dream of beginning a cross-country trip without a GPS or at least a good atlas, never even consider the importance of having a financial road map during the many years they will earn and spend money. Without an adequate map, they are unlikely to reach a destination of financial security. The financial planning process should produce that financial road map. As with any map, you can’t decide how to get where you are going without knowing where you are. Effective financial planning begins with a clear understanding of where you are fi nancially. This understanding is derived from information your fi nancial professional should ask you to provide. The information can be qualitative, such as your risk tolerance or how you may feel about providing for family members or charity. The information can also be quantitative (the financial facts). The facts may include your estate plan ning documents (wills, trusts, powers of attorney), personal financial statements, budgets, retirement plans/ brokerage accounts/outside account statements, insurance policies, and income tax returns. Once you know where you are, you can begin to plan where you are going and how best to get there. The Bevan Wealth Management Group (Janet Bevan, Financial Advisor/Vice President, Thomas Bevan, Financial Ad- visor/Vice President/Branch Manager, and Jeremy Brown, Financial Advisor) is with Stifel, Nicolaus & Company, Incorporated, member SIPC and NYSE. A child falls off a slide at the playground and suffers a broken wrist. Magic Pill or Potion?

by Joanne Augusto Owner of Nutrition World

Each day our bodies work very hard to perform all necessary tasks to have a successful day. There are billions of activities that are occurring that we are not aware of. Unfortunately, it isn’t until one of these systems break down that we get frustrated and look for an instant fix. Despite all the empty promises on social media, healing takes time and patience. There is no magic pill or potion. The first step in the healing process is not to separate your symptoms from the rest of your body and life. All too often we complain about an issue in one part of the body, not understanding that your entire body and lifestyle are involved. Most health conditions didn’t occur overnight. Even a cold, which is usually blamed on the last person you saw with a cold, is just a side effect of a compromised immune system that needs some attention. Before going to your health advisor take some time to record any dietary changes, sleep habits, exercise (or lack of ) and emotional stability. Yes your emotions play a major role in your health. As you start writing your habits down you may discover simple truths such as your not drinking enough water, your not getting any fresh air, or that all your symptoms began when you were having stress at work. Your journal should contain at least three days of information to be helpful. If the situation has lasted longer than a year, a three-week diary would be best. The more complete the information the easier it is to figure out from where the condition is occurring. The journal should contain at minimum, your diet, sleep, exercise and bowel movements. If you plan to see a Holistic health care professional your emotional status each day is extremely important. Our bodies depend on every cell working together, so trying to isolate our symptoms and not look into the cause is usually wasting time and money. So please be patient with yourself. Miracle healing occurs every day!

BERRY FRESH CAFÉ Six years ago, owner Tim Timoteo had a vision – to open a cheerful family restaurant that would not be mediocre, but rather, amazing! His ‘recipe for success’ included using farm fresh organic ingredients and hiring only quality, NICE people. He even personally makes several trips a year to bring down gorgeous tomatoes and tree-ripened peaches from north Georgia. His soups and muffins are homemade. He features Rainforest Alliance coffees and herbal teas. He serves only Natalie’s local Indian River orange juice. His grits are made with whole cream and his oatmeal with fresh milk. The breakfast and lunch menu is a great variety of amazing meals and sides that make it hard to choose from. Dine either in or outside on his lovely covered patio. Well-mannered dogs may join you there. Yes, stop in soon and say hi to Tim! Berry Fresh Cafe is open everyday! Open Mon-Thu 8am to 3pm

GREEN LIFE CAFÉ & MARKETPLACE Are you a vegan? Have you ever thought about converting? I never have until I visited Green Life Café & Marketplace in Jensen Beach. This is a very unique café, which touts an organic health and wellness lifestyle. Every edible item is gluten free and non-GMO! They offer wraps, smoothies (I had “Tropical Blend, consisting of strawberries, mango, pineapple, honey and orange juice), which was overly delicious! I also had a chicken (afraid to make the switch too quickly), spinach, wrap with ginger dressing). Also, offered is local honey, essential oils, many different types of household cleaners (non toxic of course) and vitamins, coffees and teas, all organically grown. They have card readings on Thursday ($13), yoga classes, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and meditation class on Monday. Friday night is “open mic” night. This is truly a soothing, calming environment and worth a trip to check it out. Owners, Elaine Freedman and Scott Lesstino are pleasant and very accommodating. Since my visit, I have changed my eating habits and thinking seriously about becoming a vegan!!! They are open M-Th 7-7, Fri 7-10, Sat 9-6 and Sun 9-4. 1309 NE Sunview Terrace Jensen Beach 772-232-6615

A Tribute to Shane Save the Chimps bids a sorrowful farewell to our beloved friend, Shane. Shane was a remarkable chimpanzee who forged deep bonds with both his chimpanzee family and his human caregivers. Rest in Peace, Shane 1985 – 2015 Save the Chimps The World’s Largest Chimpanzee Sanctuary • Fort Pierce, FL 29 29

Shane was charming, playful, and had a love for life despite the years of suffering that he endured. He filled our hearts—and his departure due to kidney failure has left a painful void in our lives.

Some time later, the prosthesis was removed, leaving Shane without a disc in his neck. No pain medication was given to Shane following both surgeries. We can only imagine the pain and discomfort he must have suffered. Shane would ul-

Shane was born November 14, 1985 to his mother Kelly and father Conrad at the Laboratory for Experimental Medicine and Surgery in Primates (LEMSIP) in New York State. His records show that he remained with his mother for at least a week, but we do not know exactly when he was taken from her. During Shane’s 11 years at LEMSIP, he was anesthetized 156 times and his liver was biopsied at least 14 times. He lived in a small isolation cage and never saw the outdoors. In 1996, LEMSIP closed its doors, and Shane was shipped to The Coulston Foundation, a laboratory in Alamogordo, NM. Coulston was in some ways an improvement for Shane: he met other chimps, and had access to an outside cage. But sadly, Shane was a subject in a controversial experiment known as “Spinal Dynamics” in which a healthy disc was removed from timately be plagued with neck stiffness for the rest of his life. Shane’s cervical spine, and replaced with a prosthetic disc. In 2002, Shane’s life took a turn for the better when Save the Chimps took over The Coulston Foundation, rescuing and retiring Shane and more than 250 other chimpanzees. Shane became a member of Rufus’s Family, the largest known social group of chimpanzees in the Americas. Shane left laboratory life behind forever when he and his chimpanzee friends made the journey to a spacious island home built just for them in sunny Florida. Shane relished island life. Despite never having set foot on grass or lived outside of a cage his entire life, Shane bravely ventured forth onto the hills of his three-acre island home. He loved browsing for goodies, grooming with friends, and sunbathing on the patio. For a time he was the alpha male of the group, a kind and gentle leader who could always be counted on to mediate disputes. (A young male named Gerro

Leo even began to copy Shane’s unique style of chimpanzee display, in which Shane would shake his

but like anyone, had his moody days. If Shane was grumpy, his caregivers knew to give him his space—but also strove to bring a smile to his face. Due to his declining kidneys, as well as neck pain, Shane received regular medications, which he didn’t particularly like. His caregivers prepared oatmeal or other concoctions to hide the taste of his medicines, and Shane enjoyed the special attention, as he was encouraged to take his daily meds. Shane is survived by his half-sister Katina of Tapioca’s Group at Save the Chimps, and the 25 wonderful chimpanzees with whom he shared his final years. Shane, we miss you so much. Thank you for the gift of your forgiveness, your smile, your friendship, and your cute little toes. We will always love and remember you. Thank you for helping to provide Shane with more than a decade of sanctuary care. We could not do it without you. We invite you to view a slideshow of photos of Shane (http:// www.savethechimps.org/a-tribute-toshane/), as well as messages of love and remembrance from his caregivers. It is important to us to honor each chimpanzee who passes away with an individualized tribute. Announcing the loss of one of our residents is not immediate because it takes us time to mourn and put to words the life, memories, and personalities of each individual.
