S U M M E R / FA L L I S S U E AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2017 Publisher/Editor

Valerie Calabrese Creative/Graphic Designer

Cathy Azzarello/CAC Designs Feature Writers/Assistant Editor

Tara Bradley Connell Joanna Johnson Contributing Writers

Hello dear readers, Welcome to the Summer/Fall Issue of Better Living & Marketplace. Thank you for being a loyal reader! August is “Happiness Happens Month”! I am happy that we are half way through the summer heat . And, I am happy to share some photos of my travels from the streets of NYC to the mountains of Stowe Vermont. It was truly food for my soul, going from exciting and fun to beautiful and peaceful. One of my favorite things was seeing and smelling the lilacs and oh, that mountain air! Hopefully you have taken or will take some time to do what you love to do this summer. Our article The All Inclusive Athlete may be inspiring for a getaway day right here in St. Lucie. Don’t be fooled by the title. Next stop on this year’s intention: Focusing on balance. Balancing time between work, play, family, friends, love, giving, receiving, nutrition, physical and spiritual needs (the list goes on) can be challenging. Who can do that? It’s a work in progress. I am starting with awareness, perhaps you’ll join me. If you do not receive or have the time to pick up our magazine please log onto blmmag.com or email us at betterliving@betterliving.com for convenient home delivery.

With school beginning in just two weeks, planning some balance could be a great stress buster. Be sure to look at our Community Events Calendar for tax holiday dates and more. Did you know that it is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month? Look for tips and latest designer fashions from Dr. Lynne Erbe in our newest column, The View! I am happy to share our Super Heroes Don’t Always Wear Capes article compliments of Friends in Pink. Their mission: “no-one in our community should die of breast cancer…”. Read about their annual luncheon in early October. There is something special happening on August 21st. For the first time in 26 years a total eclipse of the sun will occur here in America! Google it! You may have to travel if you want see it. Before signing off I would like to wish you a sweet Grandparent’s Day and a chill Labor Day! To my granddaughter Olivia, You are the sparkle in my smile!!! xo God bless, If you are involved in a community program that is making a positive difference, please contact me @ Valerie@blmmag.com. You just might be the next story.

“The Lord gave the word; Great was the company of those who published it” Psalm 68:11 Please remember to support your local small businesses.

VANTAZMA CAR CARE

It would be wise to incorporate a few simple things right away to avoid feeling stressed, especially when getting ready in the mornings. Parents and children should plan a few good habits and be consistent with these routines until it becomes normal to everyone. During summer, families have generally relaxed their sleep and wake patterns. Now adults and children should reset into a more structured bedtime. Young or old when we are tired, normal daily activities can quickly unravel into outbursts of frustration. This has an undesirable effect and can hinder a child’s readiness to learn. Everyone – including teachers – should get plenty of rest to avoid problems arising due to lack of sleep. Studies show most people move about 30 percent slower after waking, so it makes sense to prepare whatever possible the night before.

Try incorporating a few after dinner routines on school nights even though you may be tired from a long day. Give children a list of specific tasks to prepare for morning. Have them choose what to eat for breakfast and set the table. Prepare school lunches and snacks. Children can get their own book bag ready at night and put it near their shoes. Let them choose and try on clothes the night before to ensure they like how it looks and feels. Don’t forget to check the weather channel. Set alarms to allow enough time for everyone to get ready. To avoid derailing your schedule, parents and children should make a rule not to check emails or go online before leaving for school.

Try a few little changes to bring more peace and happiness into your back to school routine.

Super Heroes Don’t Always Wear Capes

The Saltwater Sisters Lady Angler Tournament benefits Friends in Pink

B A G E L B R O T H E R S O F N Y. C O M

S

Super Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. They don’t all wear capes or fly through the air. Not all of them can leap a building in a single bound or stop a bullet with the palm of their hand. In fact, some Super Heroes don’t even know they are a Super Hero. What they do have in common is a certain amount of bravery and strength of character. They have an inner compass, telling them what they need to do, and then they do it. In October, at their annual luncheon, Friends in Pink will celebrate the Super Heroes of Breast Cancer. Those that wake up each day, knowing it may be a tough day, but still, they put one foot in front of the other and do what they need to do. Those Super Hero survivors who

16

fight every day to maintain their health, both physically and mentally, smiling every day while living with the fear of reoccurrence. Those Super Hero fighters that are fighting cancer with both fists up and an attitude of survival. Those Super Hero caregivers that nurture the fighters, propping them up when they’re throwing up, mopping their foreheads, giving of their time to drive to appointments and making shake after shake after shake in an attempt to put lifesaving calories in bodies that constantly reject them. Those Super Hero healthcare workers who administer life-saving treatments and surgeries, or deliver life-changing news. Those Super Hero scientists and researchers who work hard every day trying to find that one thing that will cure cancer, or make treatments easier to tolerate. Those Super Hero financial donors and sponsors who understand that it takes money to survive breast cancer, or to find a cure. These are the Super Heroes of Breast Cancer. Friends in Pink is inviting the community out for a day of celebration,

filled with joy and appreciation and of course, hope. The event, which will be held at the PGA Rotunda attached to the PGA Learning Center in Port St. Lucie, will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 7. Guests will be treated to a lunch menu created by PGA Chef De Cuisine Anthony Williams, a pink champagne toast and dynamic speakers. A selfie photo booth will be available for souvenirs. A silent auction with a wide variety of items including paintings, an autographed golf bag, gift cards and certificates for personal services will be held. The day will be a joyous one, but it will also be a life saving event. Friends in Pink President Cheryl Caldwell said the importance of this particular luncheon cannot be stressed enough. “Everyone knows that there is a healthcare crisis in our country,” she said. “But I’m not sure most people understand exactly what is happening in our very own communities. Friends in Pink has had a 400% increase in demand for services in the last year. 400%! That means we are getting more

and more requests from people fighting breast cancer for help with their medical treatments. Remember, on the Treasure Coast, the average cost of surviving breast cancer is $350,000. With deductibles and co-pays, even those with insurance may not be able to afford their lifesaving treatment.” Friends in Pink pays the bills. That’s the message that Caldwell wants to get out. “When Friends in Pink was founded 12 years ago, the mission was that no-one in our community should die of breast cancer simply because they cannot afford medical treatment. No-one should have to opt out of a chemo or radiation treatment or surgery because they cannot afford the deductible. We pay for those deductibles, or medicine or medical treatment so they can get the lifesaving treatment they need.” Friends in Pink has saved more than 250 lives. But where does the money come from? “We absolutely depend on this luncheon to raise money, but we also depend on donor events, grants, sponsorships and donations. Grants are very hard to come by these days so all the other fundraising sources are critical to the mission of Friends in Pink. More than $.83 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to recipient services. We are a volunteer driven organization. We work hard every single day communicating with medical care providers, verifying applicant information, speaking to recipients, researching new avenues of fundraising, and attending donor events. Running an organization that literally helps saves lives is no easy task but it’s

Bob McCarty, Bill Kansier, Madeline Herrmann, Dick Martin and Paul Esaian at the Bingo Luncheon

nothing compared to what our recipients are going through, fighting for their very lives.” Being a Super Hero is also far from easy, but the rewards are high. Fighters wake up another day to fight, to live, to love. Caregivers watch their family member or friend get stronger and healthier. Doctors and nurses see their patients survive and go back to the art of living. And scientists and researchers are getting closer and closer every day to reaching that, what seems impossible, goal of finding a cure for cancer. They’re teaching your children, or serving you lunch, or giving you a prescription. Their capes are invisible, but the capes are there nonetheless. Come celebrate these Super Heroes. Thank them, hug them, toast them and celebrate their lives. And truth be told, if you attend this luncheon, you are in fact a Super Hero of Breast Cancer yourself. Holistic Health

I

Fat is your Friend

Luckily mainstream agrees with me now. Studies now show that not only is fat good for us but it has a critical role for maintaining a healthy body.

I have been in the natural food industry for many years and have gone thru many fad diets and crazy ideas about what was healthy. One fad that I never agreed with was that fat was bad. I just couldn’t understand how our bodies were made reliant on fat for so many functions, especially brain and cell protection and we were taught that it was bad for us.

As always please understand I am referring to fats in their natural form, not processed in anyway. I still hear people ordering egg whites to avoid fat and filling up on refined carbs instead. I believe sugar is and always be the majority problem with an unhealthy diet.

Please give healthy fat another chance. Eggs are just one example of a healthy fat. Eggs contain essentially a little bit of every nutrient we need for a healthy diet. Not only are eggs loaded with healthy fats, but are also high in protein making them a perfect food to fill you up and keep you satisfied for longer. My favorite healthy fat is from avocados. The mono- and polyunsaturated fats in avocados not only help reduce blood cholesterol levels, but they help decrease the overall risk for heart disease. Avocado’s high vitamin B6 and folic acid content helps to regulate homocysteine levels, which is what reduces the risk. A 2013 study published in Nutrition Journal found avocados were associated with a reduced risk of metabolic syndrome, a group of symptoms shown to increase the risk of stroke, coronary artery disease, and diabetes. Overall, avocado consumption is associated with improved diet quality, nutrient intake, and good heart health. Other healthy fats are chia seeds, olives, hemp and nuts and seeds. Try to increase your servings of these foods while eliminating processed foods especially sugar. by Joanne Augusto Owner of Nutrition World 101 N. US 1, Suite 121 Fort Pierce, FL 34950 772-464-3598

Business GROWS in

SPACES

NEGOTIATING YOUR LEASE TERMS

Congratulations! You’ve found the perfect space for your business, it’s in your preferred location and it meets your size requirements. is is precisely the time you need your Commercial Realtor the most… Let’s talk about Negotiation!

WHAT IT IS

Negotiation is ““e Art” of the deal! Your commercial realtor speaks the language of the commercial landlord. He/she knows how to structure your request in a way that is designed to help you get to most equitable outcome for you, the tenant, while also meeting the basic needs of the lan landlord. It’s important to ask for what you want!

HOW IT STARTS

Once you are satissed with the location, do a critical visual inspection of the space. Is it clean? Does it need repair? Will you need to do anything to make it a better st for your business? Your commercial realtor will be taking notes to help you ask the landlord for the concessions you want to have BEFORE you take possession.

MOST IMPORTANT TOOL

TIME! e length of time you plan to lease a space will affect the outcome of negotiations. In most instances, the shorter the lease the less likely the landlord is willing to compromise.

SEEK HELP!

Negotiating your lease is no simple task, for the least amount of stress and the best result, work with a Commercial Real Estate Professional!

Great News for Sellers and Buyers! Moving to Assisted Living? Down Sizing Your Home? Mortgage rates continue to decrease as the Federal Reserve continues to raise rates?

While interest rates were increased twice this year by the Federal Reserve, and we are poised for a third rate hike, banks seem to be ignoring the rate hikes and the interest rate on a 30 year fixed rate mortgage has gone down.

Consider selling your items on eBay… without the fuss.

Lower rates mean higher buying power and higher prices for sellers. Inventory for existing homes for sale is still tight in most markets and millennials are starting to enter the market as first time homebuyers while confidence in the employment sector increases. As your neighborhood real estate expert I appreciate the opportunity to service all your real estate needs. Please call me today for a free consultation.

Life often doesn’t make sense, and dishes up a lot more questions than answers. We simply don’t know why things happen the way they do. But we do know we can experience peace because God is with us and he loves us.

Loss is inevitable. Bad things happen. When the unexpected comes your way, your world is instantly turned upside down. You long to understand why. Why did my husband walk out on me? Why did my wife die of cancer? Why did I lose my job? Why am I struggling with mental health issues? We need to learn how to understand the journey of grief and what to expect along the way. From initial shock, to the unbearable sorrow, you struggle with reality and ultimately surrender on a pathway to peace and service. It’s not a linear experience but with God’s Word and his ways, he will carry you through it.

Grief is God’s tool for you getting through the transitions of life. You can have hope knowing God is in control, he will bring good out of bad, and he has a plan to use your pain for a purpose. It is at times like these that we need each other. God tells us that: “Two can accomplish more than twice as much as one… If one falls, the other pulls him up; but if a man falls when he is alone, he’s in trouble… And one standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer; three is even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken”. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12) (TLB) God can turn: • Tragedy into triumph • Burdens into Blessings • Garbage into Gold We can count on God’s unconditional love to get us through what we are going through. We need to believe it in order to receive it. God Bless, Pastor Mike

The All-Inclusive Athlete

Some of today’s all-inclusive properties, like Club Med Sandpiper Bay, located in Port St. Lucie, offer healthy dining options, exhilarating ways to play and spas fit for A-listers proving you can find a spa-centric escape just a quick drive away.

M Mention an all-inclusive resort and bland buffets and watered down cocktails may come to mind. And while Club Med Sandpiper Bay, located an hour’s drive from West Palm Beach, is an allinclusive resort, nothing at this South Florida property is bland. From a variety of ways to get active, pampered, or find your inner foodie, a visit here is more like a spa vacay than an all-you-can-eat indulgence – although you can do that, too. It’s no secret that Florida doesn’t suffer from a shortage of health-minded resorts and spas, but Club Med Sandpiper Bay,

28

BY TARA BRADLEY CONNELL overlooking the St. Lucie River on the Atlantic Coast, is one of the Sunshine State’s few all-inclusive properties. What’s even better: This health conscience getaway is custom-made for fitness lovers.

On-site sports academies and professional coaches make this Club Med locale a training ground for tennis, golf, and beach volleyball pros while water skiing, sailing, and paddle boarding add in more ways to have fun in the sun. For adrenaline junkies, they even offer flying trapeze classes – evident from the grand trapeze that doubles as a stage for nightly entertainment. The all-inclusive aspect keeps things easy. Two-bedroom suites with garden or bay views are included in the room rate, as well as all food and beverages. And with an extensive list of ways to work up a sweat, bottled water is at every turn, ensuring dehydration is never an issue – a must-have if you speak with the onsite nutritionist, available for consult. Ways to Play Mornings here start with the sound of tennis balls cracking from the tennis and pickle ball courts while Zenminded guests find their Namaste at the Cardio Studio, offering everything

Made with white or dark chocolate, the buttery, crunchy, creation is what can only be described as a magical slice of pure bliss. The bread

from spinning and Zumba to Pilates and yoga by the pool. An ever-changing class schedule keeps returning guests coming back for more. “Club Med Sandpiper Bay partners with FitBodies, an organization placing fitness, yoga and sports professionals at resort facilities,” says Suzell, Snowden the FitBodies President. “Through that, we are able to provide a yoga teacher, a meditation expert, a fitness instructor with multiple formats, an instructor who can offer the latest trends, and a tennis or pickle ball coach.” On the agenda this year: celeb instructors like Nydia Braithwaite, Sohailla Digsby, and Leslee Bender, of the Bender Ball. With all that exercise, cool things down at the onsite beach where sailing, paddle boarding, wake boarding, fly boarding and kayaking are easily accessible from the sand or dock. The adult-exclusive infinity pool, located at the corner of the property, sets the scene for the perfect pool day with bay views, lounge-worthy day beds, chaise lounges, a Jacuzzi and bar serving up fresh mojitos.

And while a focus on health and wellness is evident in everything from the activity options to the dining menus, the spa is the place where everything falls into place. Spa-Bound From the die-hard athletes to the yogis-in-training, guests melt away sore muscles or daily stresses at the Club Med Spa by L’Occitane. The Club Med Signature Massage, a deep tissue massage that incorporates a relaxing foot bath and aromatherapy techniques, is a proven favorite, while spa packages allow guests to take in multiple treatments. Options include the five-session Sports Repetition Muscle Relief Package, Tennis Rejuvenation package and the Golfer’s Swing Relief Package. is such a hit here, that guests often purchase loaves to take home to loved ones – if it makes it that far. That being said, the healthy food options are equally impressive. “One of the most popular healthy dishes is the grilled steak served with plantains and chimichurri at 447 calories,” says Chef Victor Gerley. “We also do the same with grilled mahi-mahi at 325 calories. Every day during Body & Mind Weeks, a different healthy juice and smoothie is featured.”

“I just keep thinking God must have something special in store for me - to go through so much and keep my faith.

D

ebra’s mother passed away tragically. Then after a struggle with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, her father followed.

“Driving to and from visits with dad, after I would get in the car, first I’d pray, then I’d turn on Christian FM and crank it up!” But it didn’t stop there. Debra’s husband passed last December and then came her loss of employment. She felt like a fictional character in some storybook.

“So I keep listening, and this radio station has brought me joy in hard times and reminded me throughout the trials and tribulations of my life, that I AM a child of a Living God and I matter.” Debra’s testimony reminds us of the power of hope. What Debra is really experiencing in the midst of her difficulties is the peace that passes all understanding. Her faith is growing. She feels her heavenly Father’s loving hands. The power of Jesus’s love in her life is confirmed through the positive messages she hears through the words of a friend on Christian FM. Even when her faith is being tested, Debra says, “God has a plan for everything. We don’t always know what it is nor can we possibly see into the future, but when my mind starts annoying me with all the negatives, I usually tune in right in the middle of a song I need to hear, to heal my heart.

“One of my favorite songs that I sing over and over in my mind is Newsboys’ “ Your Love Never Fails,” because to me, nights are the worst. So there may be pain in the night, but joy comes in the morning!”

Tune in during Christian FM’s September Fall Challenge to hear more testimonies of hope. More information coming soon at Christianfm.com
