Mental Health vs Mental Illness

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the first issue of the Mental Health and Wellness Connection. In this issue we will define “Mental Health vs Mental Illness.” We will also take at a look at how your mental health and your physical health are interconnected. Per the World health Organization, mental health is defined as a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well and contribute to their community.

Mental illness or disorder is characterized by a clinically significant disturbance in an individual’s cognition, emotional regulation,

or behavior. It is usually associated with distress or impairment in important areas of functioning.

It is important to recognize that we can’t separate someone's mental health from their physical health as they are interconnected. For example, someone who recently lost their jobs may feel stressed out to the point that their physical health is affected. He or she may be having difficulty sleeping, complaining of headache, having difficulty concentrating, and other physical symptoms. Now, that you are able to differentiate between mental health and mental illness, please consult your healthcare provider if you are experiencing any unusual symptoms and ask about a mental health and wellness screening.

Know this: “How you think, determines how you feel and how you act.”
