Grace is “Amazing”

L

ook, I get it. “Christian radio” is many things, and not all of them great. I’ve worked in different radio formats, but have spent most of my time on Christian pop stations. I’ve seen all the sides of it. I know the artists, the record companies, the other Christian radio hosts, and the listeners. We’re all messed-up in our own uniquely horrible – and wonderful – ways. I can find things to criticize about the industry and, while I’m at it, about myself. But this, at least, is no longer one of those things: Radio songs are somehow “too positive” and too focused on grace, love, joy, light, and mercy. Years ago, I made this argument myself. After all, most of the Psalms aren’t overflowing with happy themes. I love theological discussion, and I’m not a particularly emotional person. I fully realize that life includes much suffering. We should expect it. So why doesn’t Christian music on the radio reflect it? Well, here’s an answer: It’s radio. Radio is a particular medium. People use radio, just like they use any tool. It turns out that people on the way home from a tough job do not use the radio to hear a song about sorrow and judgment. (We can foist it on them for their own good, but they have these darn buttons they can click.)

2

BETTER LIVING & MARKETPLACE MAGAZINE

And it’s not just the music; there’s plenty I don’t say on the radio, because people listen to the radio a certain way. I know I have to get to the point, and fast. I know I can’t overwhelm people with a lot of numbers while they’re driving. I know I shouldn’t talk about myself for ten straight minutes, because people didn’t turn on my station for that. Should art reflect the whole of life, what it means to be human, what it means to be a fallen creature in a fallen world? Absolutely. Does this mean Christian music radio needs to reflect all of that? No, because it’s used a particular way. One other thing: If you want more songs about judgment, please feel free to write them. Write great ones: Plaintive ones. Profound ones. Poetic ones. Please do it. I’ll listen. But do know that judgment, itself, is not remarkable. The world swims in it. It’s in the moral air we breathe, in and out of church, in every culture, and has been since the Garden of Eden. But grace, well… that’s different. It’s THE difference, actually. Grace is “amazing”, or so I’ve sung. Maybe there’s a reason people are, perhaps, more drawn to that song than any other. And maybe that’s not so bad after all

tepping into February with boots on the sand. This is the weather I wait for. I always hope the cooler air sticks around longer than it usually does. While I wear my winter gear, I can easily spot northerners in their shorts and flip-flops. This is our Sweetheart Issue and I’d like to focus on love and kindness. In a text: “Never let loyalty and kindness leave you. Let it color your every interaction, from checking out at the grocery store to how you address your spouse at home.” I have read that the average person influences ten thousand people in their lifetime. Is it not better to be a blessing to our loved ones and those we encounter?

am excited to have come full circle with our front cover feature of Dr. Lynne Erbe. Although we are in our eleventh year of printing, her practice was our first feature cover, eight years ago. She has moved back to Port St. Lucie Blvd. where we first met. Read more on page nine. The hustle and bustle of the holidays are behind us. Let’s have some fun. This month the Mets Spring Training, St. Lucie County Fair, the 41st Annual Greek Festival and more, are happening. Get more details, listed on our Community Events calendar. Our feature article: People helping people. A brand new non-profit, Oasis Wellness Center is now serving St. Lucie and the Treasure Coast. Their services are broad and widereaching. Our population has grown tremendously. Share the road courteously. Reminder: Don’t forget to file your homestead exemption before March 1st. See you next month in March. Wishing you a Happy Valentine’s Day! God bless,

Grace Lutheran/ACC Groundbreaking BY JOANNA JOHNSON The groundbreaking for Port St. Lucie’s newest Alzheimer’s Community Care Center took place on the morning of January 17th, and what an inspiring ceremony it was. The Center, a joint partnership between Grace Lutheran Church on Cashmere Blvd and Alzheimer’s Community Care, will be built on the grounds of the church. The purpose, as stated by Pastor Cris Escher, is to provide a haven for patients AND families, giving them access to financial, health and social networks and nourish their spiritual needs. His generous and forward-thinking congregation is in total agreement that “it is the right thing to do”. Mayor Gregory Oravec went on to say that what makes us humans is what is in our minds. Robbing the afflicted of their memories, of their life

6

stories, makes Alzheimer’s Disease the Great Scourge for them and for those who love them. At the Center, the attendees sing, they do crafts, they participate in “SitErcise”, they play games, they socialize. Even as important, their daily care gives the caregivers “time”: time for shopping, time for yardwork, even time to nap, if they so desire. The need is great in our area. Alzheimer’s Disease is at a crisis point

and only three area daycare centers exist, all with long waiting lists. The idea for this project was hatched a year and a half ago. Construction may take another year. But throughout the project, as spoken so eloquently by Greg Walton, President of the Florida Georgia District, Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, “the love of Jesus is being made manifest”.

LYNNE C. ERBE, O.D.

MACULAR DEGENERATION

I

moved to Port St. Lucie to be near my transplanted Rhode Island family. My parents and siblings moved to the area in 1995 while I was living in south Florida attending Optometry school. Back then things were very different. Becker was a dirt road and Gatlin Boulevard was two lanes. Tradition was dotted with cows and orange groves and St Lucie West was fairly new. I practiced in St Lucie West for the first few years. Eventually the city was growing and I opened my first private practice on Port St Lucie Blvd in 2004. Next stop was Tradition and then Gatlin Blvd. Coming full circle occurred when I recently moved back out onto Port St Lucie Blvd (almost across the street from my original office). Purchasing the building has allowed me to make this my final destination.

It’s been a great experience to grow alongside this city. It’s clean, manicured, beautifully landscaped public highways, parks and shopping centers are also filled with artwork and sculptures. Its neighborhoods are safe, friendly and have a diverse cultural representation. February in Port St Lucie means fabulous weather, and of course Valentine’s Day. How about combining the two into something different this year? Sure jewelry is classic, flowers are traditional and chocolate is a must.... but we thought a sweetheart sunglass sale would be just right. After all it is the Sunshine state!

It is my pleasure to discuss the annual observance of age related macular degeneration (ARMD) recognized each February. According to Wikipedia 6.2 million people were affected worldwide in 2015. ARMD is a growing concern for the next several decades due to an aging “baby boomer” generation and an increase in more people living longer. As we age our joints, bones and other structures degenerate. For the eye, it is the inner lining called the retina that is affected. The retina acts like film in a camera and takes a picture of what you’re aiming at. In ARMD there is damage to the center of vision so images like faces and everyday activities like reading, personal grooming or driving can become blurred, distorted or missing. Peripheral vision is unaffected. Risk factors include age, genetics, race (Caucasians especially females) and lifestyle choices. There is no cure (for aging) but early detection

can identify beginning stages and direct treatment. Antioxidant supplements, UV protection, and smoking cessation (smoking doubles the risk) are non medical therapies that can help slow the progression. Medical therapies may include laser and injections. Getting older no longer means being old. Preserving your vision can lead to many meaningful moments, help retain independence and contribute to a better quality of life. Please join me in celebrating save your vision month by getting an annual comprehensive dilated eye exam especially if your 60+ or by passing this information on to loved ones.

Welcome To Outback BY JOANNA JOHNSON

Kyle Gilmore, OUTBACK PROPRIETOR

A recent visit to St. Lucie West’s Outback Steakhouse provided us with a delightful dining experience. Kyle Gilmore, who has been the proprietor for over eight months, proudly showed us his sparkling fresh and clean establishment. He migrated to this steakhouse from the St. Cloud, FL restaurant and told us he has been with Outback Steakhouse of Florida, LLC, for nearly six years. We are lucky to have him. We chose the Wood-Fired Grilled Shrimp on the Barbie for our shared appetizer. I know – why not the Blooming Onion, their specialty? Next time. Too many choices. As it were, we got two skewers of jumbo shrimp – four to a skewer – served on buttered toast points with bruschetta. Juicy and peppery. Kyle emphasized Outback’s commitment to bold flavors and seasonings. As tempting as the Land to Sea Steak and Lobster Special (now offered for the rest of the winter season) sounded, we selected the 9 oz. Center Cut sirloin (medium) for myself and the Bacon Bourbon Salmon for my friend. Both were done to perfection – the steak uniformly pink in the center and tender enough to have cut with a fork, if only it hadn’t been so deliciously thick! We both agreed the salmon was the most flavorful and moist we have ever been served. The accompanying honey and brown sugar-topped sweet potato and crisp grilled veggies were a treat. We asked Kyle if Outback, being an Australian inspired eatery, is doing anything for the unspeakable wildfire disaster Down Under. Yes, he replied emphatically. Customers have a choice of rounding up their check to the next dollar, or donating an extra dollar (or more) for the Red Cross relief effort. Outback will match all donations made by patrons (by February 29, 2020), up to $500,000. So much carnage being met with so much love and generosity. Thank you, Outback! No dining adventure Down Under would be complete without dessert. Our selection was the Double Chocolate Mini Parfait – a chocolate mousse, with crumbled Oreo layers and whipped cream. Absolutely a perfect ending to a sumptuous meal. Under Kyle’s leadership, know that your wait staff will always be efficient and professional. Meghan, our server, couldn’t have been more attentive and polite. Also know that Outback now has delivery after 4:00 pm, for anyone within a 10 minute drive from the restaurant – that means you, PGA Village! They also have Curbside Pickup for Takeout, if you prefer. But go. Enjoy the ambience and a wonderful meal. You’ll be able to relax and have a quiet conversation in the dining room (now with ‘call ahead seating’ ) if you wish, or a chance to get noisy in the sports bar cheering on your favorite team.

Heart Health

Here are a few easy tips to follow to give your heart a fighting chance to operate at its best for you! • Meditation. There is growing evidence demonstrating your mind and body are connected. The mind-body connection is real, and what you think does affect your health. I suggest using the help of phone apps or simply regulating your breath and sitting in a quiet area without synthetic fragrance or distractions. Even ten minutes a day can improve your health. • Breathing exercises. Most of us go around each day only doing shallow breathing. A recent study showed breathing in thru your nose for two seconds, holding for eight and releasing for four will reduce inflammation and improve general health. • Nitric Oxide Release Workout. Nitric oxide is a molecule, that when released your blood vessels dilate to deliver more oxygen and nutrients. I follow Dr Mercolas Nitric Oxide Dump video on YouTube. It only takes 90 seconds to release the NO. It is so simple, just four exercises ten times each, four rounds. It only takes 3 minutes and it is low impact.

• Ubiquinol. This supplement is critical for heart health, especially if you take statins, which impair the production of coQ10. Ubiquinol is the reduced form of CoQ10. It is used for energy production by every cell in your body. It also helps protect against cellular damage from free radicals.

Our mental health relies on it! “In Western culture, we are taught to be very individualistic. We, as individuals, must strive to be number one, and nothing else! Be the best, the strongest, the fastest, have the newest, and accomplish the most. It’s not surprising that this comes at a price.”

hen you hear “mental health” Justin Baksh what do you think about? Do you think about stress, work/life balance, or even closure and processing? It seems that we as human beings are afflicted with the, “It’s not me!” disorder. Some of the most difficult disclosures made behind the closed therapeutic door are admitting or acknowledging that an individual has anxiety or even depression. Mike Beath The negative stigma associated with mental health keeps most people very quiet. Working in the substance use treatment industry and private practice arena for the last decade has brought some universal insights to light, however. No matter the race, culture, socioeconomic status, or number of Instagram followers, we ALL have stressors and life hurts that we don’t deal with. Or, I should say, we deal with them ineffectively. This results in subconscious rumination and overall poor performance in life. In Western culture, we are taught to be very individualistic. We, as individuals, must strive to be number one, and nothing else! Be the best, the strongest, the fastest, have the newest, and accomplish the most. It’s not surprising that this comes at a price. Often, when I’m working with a client, the biggest insight comes from CONTINUED NEXT PAGE

when your light is shed on the unhealthy programming to which they have been subjected. Allowing individuals to free themselves and admit that they don’t want to, can’t, or even shouldn’t, has been empowering to many. So, what exactly do I mean? e can’t ask for help, because we are expected to have the answers. If we show weakness (or perceived weakness) we will be taken advantage of. We will get outmaneuvered, out mastered, or manipulated. Think about the world of high school (and even after at times). If you showed sensitivity, compassion, or care, were you celebrated? Often, the pecking order dictated other agendas. The “cool kids” set the tone, language, and vibe of the day. Consequently, you learned it’s better to be a chameleon. You do not put yourself out there for fear of that information being used against you. It’s funny when you’re not the brunt of the joke, but as soon as the attention comes your way, it doesn’t seem as funny anymore. Between these types of interactions and the inability of most parents to model healthy embracement of emotions, we flounder later in life. We think we can’t (and we don’t) disclose as easily when we are struggling, and this results in a range of potential consequences.

O

ne of the main philosophies of Oasis Wellness Center is being proactive instead of reactive. You see, waiting until you to have an emotional breakdown, an explosive outburst, or start to isolate from friends or family means that you have waited too long to intervene in your own life. You’ve crossed a point where you can no longer compartmentalize life’s challenges properly; it all blends together and bleeds into everything. If we can deprogram ourselves to see life for what it is – not through our biased and influenced perspectives – we would be better off. Imagine if you could truly go to sleep at night and leave all your hurts and disappointments for that day, in that day. You could truly wake up refreshed and ready for the next day. We don’t do this though; instead, we automatically assume that sleep resets all our stressors. Incorrect! This is why the goal of Oasis Wellness Center is to not only provide counseling for all of life’s events, but also to educate and advocate before events become unmanageable. We plan on getting involved with schools to aid teachers and other professionals in teaching children about emotional regulation. One of, if not the most important, things that we overlook in teaching our children empowering individuals to be aware of self-care. We neglect ourselves and then erroneously think we can take care of others. Being able to have a non-biased perspective on your life can only make you a better individual. It’s not about admitting that you have a disorder, or that you are not capable. We don’t ask for help, because we haven’t been taught the value in asking for it. At Oasis Wellness Center, we offer many tools to help you live your best life – from traditional counseling and behavioral health services to drug court services, anger management courses and domestic violence counseling, as well as veterans’ services and more. Give us a call and let us see how we can help! We work with or have referrals for young children to mature adults. Please call Justin Baksh @ 772.301.9500 or Mike Beath @ 772.418.2491 if you need any further information. We have offices in Port St. Lucie and Ft. Pierce for your convenience.

Pastor Mike’s Corner

“How to Get Through What You’re Going Through”

A

s I pondered what to write about this month I thought of the year just past. Our household went through a lot of stuff, some of it good, but some of it not so good. I for one struggled with some medical issues, of course living in South Florida, we all had to struggle with the Hurricane season, not to mention the various family issues that would come up from time to time. If you are Italian you for sure know what I’m talking about. (Lol) My point is that life has its fair amount of struggles. So how do we get through life’s struggles? There are three ways we struggle: 1. We struggle with Other People. 2. We struggle with Ourselves. 3. But our real struggle is with God. Two reasons we struggle with God: 1. We doubt His wisdom 2. We want to be in control Isolation has always been a problem with me. When anything was going wrong I wanted to fix it on my own. I didn’t need any help. When I’m by myself, I’m in bad company. It is at these times I need to seek God’s help. A lot of the time I know what God is going to tell me to do and there are times even though I know He’s right, I don’t want to do it. It’s at that time I need to ask Him to help want to do what I don’t want to do. When I stop doubting God’s wisdom and let Him be in control I usually find myself wanting to do what is right. But as I have said many times before my biggest problem is me. I know that if I ask God to help me to want to want to, He will!! So you know what I sometimes do? I don’t ask Him, as if God doesn’t know what I’m up to. And of course you can just imagine how things go after that. As I struggle with life’s challenges I need to trust God and admit He’s a lot smarter than I am. My prayer is that as we go into 2020 we all would let God be in control more, especially in those times of struggle. Because you know what? We all will have struggles this coming New Year but the good news is that God is bigger than any challenge that we may face. God Bless Pastor Mike

lthough Dow Decorating is a new endeavor for us here in Florida, we’ve been around a bit. My father, Peter Dow owned Pete’s Upholstering in Rockville, CT., which was established in 1961. I was the youngest of seven children. My brother Dan and I both started working with my father and mother at the upholstery shop when we were just boys. After I graduated, I went into the U.S. Air Force at 17. I met Kathy in 1982 and we started Dow Quality Upholstering in 1984, the same year we were married. After a very short time, we decided we would offer custom draperies. We changed the name to Dow Quality Interiors. The transition from laying out fabrics for furniture to draperies seemed natural. Next came everything else, like bedding, table skirts, all kinds of top treatments, etc. After 22 years in business, we decided we were getting tired of the cold weather and we moved to Port Saint Lucie, FL. Now we are back at it with Dow Decorating ready to make your decorating dreams come true! No job too big or too small!
