For me there is nothing like snuggling with my granddaughter in front of a fire and knowing that love is in the moment. Spending time with family and friends over the holiday season has reignited my inspiration to embrace the simple things where love is most captured. I am so grateful to have spent time with family. Taj Indian is independently owned by Head Chef Anil [pronounced AhNEIL] Kumar, who also owns the very successful and popular Flames Restaurant in Tampa. After studying hotel management in India, Anil moved to France in the late 90’s, where he continued expanding his craft and also became a facilitator in the purchase and refurbishing of several fine restaurants before moving to the US. It was, however, always his dream to have a restaurant of his own. In 2017, the dream became real when he opened Tampa’s Flames. It quickly became the highest rated area restaurant on both Google and Yelp and was designated Best Restaurant of the Year by the Tampa Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. His hard work and tenacity paid off. Indian celebrities frequent it and folks drive over from Orlando for the experience.

I recommend the chicken malai kebab – so flavorful and moist, with a delicious cream sauce. It was paired with a wonderful Mango lassi. Anil enjoys the novelty of pairing certain drinks with just the right entrees, for a total dining experience. The restaurant carries a large selection of alcoholic beverages, including Indian beers and liquors. They also have a buffet every day with entrees you will not see on the menu, a soup and a minimum of two exotic beverages. Only $11.99 on weekdays and $13.99 on weekends, as there are a few extra choices. Taj Indian’s generously sized covered patio is the perfect setting for private parties and large groups. Also, as in Tampa, Anil offers private catering for your next big event. As my friends at the doggie park say, if the place is good, it’s worth a little extra effort to get there. Taj Indian is WELL worth it; great food, wonderful ambience, immaculate, and a staff eager to please. So make that short hop for a culinary delight second to none in the area. Why is a regular eye exam so important? Do I have to have those eye drops put in?

An annual eye exam is just as important as an annual physical. Not only is it the way to detect eye related problems, it is also an easy way to get an overall view of your general health. During the exam the doctor will put in some eye drops to open/enlarge the pupil. This allows the arteries and veins inside the eye to be examined in real time. Problems that affect circulation like diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol can be detected. The eye is also part of the brain, so signs of stroke, multiple sclerosis and

brain tumors can also be seen. There are many more conditions that can be seen including auto immune diseases e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, sexually transmitted diseases e.g. HIV, certain cancers e.g. lung and breast, and side effects of medications plaquenil (e.g for rheumatoid arthritis) and steroids (e.g. for asthma). In fact, eye doctors work directly with many other health care providers to co manage many of these diseases. Of course regular eye exams are the only way to catch “silent” (no symptoms) potentially blinding problems such as glaucoma and lazy eye in their early stages, when they’re more easily managed and treated. Infants and children are especially at risk for some serious, and in some cases life threatening diseases such as congenital glaucoma and cataracts, eye cancer, type 1 diabetes and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Just like any other condition early detection is key. Even if you have 20/20 vision or only need over the counter readers an annual eye exam should be part of your yearly routine. Your eyes are truly a window to your world and a window of opportunity for your eye doctor to keep you healthy.

"KEEPING HER OFF THE STREETS"

he MV Voici Bernadette is a 55-meter (180-foot) freighter that was constructed in 1965 in Flensburg, Germany. For decades the ship transported legitimate cargo throughout Europe but was unknowingly sold into the cocaine trafficking industry. She was confiscated by the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency but was auctioned off and eventually became entangled in cocaine trafficking once again. In March 2018, the CBP approached the St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program and offered to give the program the ship under the condition that the Voici Bernadette never be used to transport drugs again. Several board members of the 501(c)3 nonprofit, MMPS, Environmental, traveled with the County’s Coastal Resources Coordinator to the Miami River to inspect the freighter. After seeing the excitement of MMPS, it was decided to pursue acquisition of the vessel. McCulley Marine Services, Inc., the County’s local artificial reef contractor, was contracted to inspect the Voici Bernadette to determine its appropriateness for artificial reefing.

In June 2018, the Coastal Resources Coordinator petition to accept the Voici Bernadette was overwhelmingly approved by the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners. McCulley Marine Services was contracted to tow the ship from the Miami River to the Summerlin Dock in Fort Pierce. While at the Summerlin Dock, MMPS, Environmental removed and cleaned several mementos from the ship for later auction and started cleaning the wheelhouse. These items include a small skiff and two outboard engines, ships wheel and brass pedestal, the ship’s teak binnacle and compass, and several brass windows and portholes plus additional memorabilia that belongs in a museum. The items are now on display throughout St. Lucie County and Martin County or they are being stored at the Port of Fort Pierce.

The Voici Bernadette was moved to the Port of Fort Pierce in July of 2018 where McCulley Marine Services and subcontractor Marine Environmental immediately continued with the cleanup. Fuel tanks and hydraulic lines were cleared prior to the removal of all engines and motors. This was done in an environmentally compatible way and was necessary to prevent explosions on the vessel. During cleanup steel had to be torch-cut to remove equipment and to create additional passageways for sea life and divers. In total, McCulley Marine Services removed 6 dumpsters of trash and tons of metal from the Voici Bernadette. MMPS, Environmental delivered paint and wiring samples to Palm Beach Environmental Laboratories where all samples tested negative for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB). This testing was requested by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Voici Bernadette has been inspected by the U.S. Coast Guard and is approved for deployment.

Fundraising for the deployment is underway and MMPS, Environmental is raising funds for this deployment and similar future vessel deployments. Their People’s Reef Project hopes to provide

the funding for this and future confiscated vessels to be cleaned and deployed as artificial reefs. The project’s campaign slogans of “Where’s She Going?” and “Keeping Her off the Streets”, refer to the vessel’s inability to ever be used to smuggle contraband again. The Peoples Reef Project further reflects on everyone who has contributed to this project, including letters of support from outdoors and conservation organizations, local businesses that have displayed memorabilia and raised awareness, the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) of Florida and the Music City Chapter of the CCA, plus many other donations from businesses and individuals.

This artificial reef deployment is being planned to maximize the impact to both the environment and economy. Benefits to the marine environment will be great. Over 100 species of fish, including snappers, groupers, sharks, forage species, and other sportfish (i.e. snook) have

been documented utilizing St. Lucie County’s artificial reefs. In addition numerous invertebrates have also been documented on these reefs, including the deepwater Oculina varicosa coral. The economic benefits to the region are also important. St. Lucie County is searching for the means to load 200 additional tons of concrete into the Voici Bernadette (McCulley Marine Services and Underwater Engineering Services have already loaded 125 tons of concrete). This will make the ship stable at the planned deployment depth of 100 feet. Sunk at this depth, the reef will attract fishermen and divers from many different regions of the country and the world.
