Hello dear readers,

appy and Healthy New Year! A fresh start, a new beginning: Many of us look forward to putting last year behind us. Yes, let’s move forward! However, rather than shut the door on what’s behind, I’d like to suggest some reflection. A dear friend always says, “Look for the packages with the silver linings.” Recently I have been reminded that life can change in a second. On this journey called life, we have the choice to take what we need and leave the rest. We can choose to continue to learn and grow. I humbly send gratitude to my dear friends, family and acquaintances that I consider my teachers. In this New Year Issue we share two personal interviews. It is my opinion that they support the quote, “COURAGE IS ADVERSITY’S LAMP.” We hope you will read “The Ride Up” and “Cause for a Celebration.” Should these articles inspire but one… Amen! healing herself and the three people she loved the most. By now, she and her husband had begun a separation that would last three long years and eventually lead to losing their house. She was numb. Carmela had exhausted all methods at her disposal... or so she thought. With nothing left to lose, she decided to do the unthinkable in this secular age: she turned to Jesus Christ and asked Him to guide her step by step. The first step involved sitting down with the family and engaging in a no-holds-barred frank and honest conversation predicated on the understanding that they were all at fault so “let’s skip the blame game.” Next, Carmela returned to the Bible. Raised a Roman Catholic, she had a cursory knowledge of the Old and New Testaments, but she began to read the passages in earnest. She was looking for an answer to her marriage and, instead, found answers to so many of life’s challenges.

armela Kirk’s marriage was in serious trouble and she was powerless to fix it. Carmela and her husband Tom were caught in a downward spiral that seemed hopeless. Along for the ride on their desperate slide were the couple’s two young children. They were a broken family: victims of their own neglect and abuse, the four weary Kirks were physically, mentally and emotionally shattered.
One such answer was the simple need for rest. In her fast-paced 24/7 medical world, rest had never been an option for Carmela. She now made it a priority. “It’s uncanny how God knows what’s best for us,” she said. She made time to rest not just the body but also the mind, to reflect on where she was and how she got there, and to plan her path going forward. “My goal was to find a way to a painless divorce for the kids’ sake. Instead, I found so much more.” Then, Tom and Carmela enrolled in Sacred Marriage Classes at Christ Fellowship Church. Slowly, carefully, the family began to heal. From that point, they rode an upward wave and never looked back.

She points to the original principles of 12step programs which recognize the importance of the spirit by advocating turning oneself over to a “power greater than ourselves” for strength. Unfortunately, by the time most people enroll in these programs, they are already broken. Carmela believes that it’s important to reach today’s kids before they break. Currently, Carmela is nearing completion of her first book Power, Love and Self-Discipline, to be published by ESH Media the first half of 2015. “Pope Francis said, ‘Who am I to judge?’ and my book is not at all judgmental,” Carmela says. Rather, the book’s intent is to offer encouragement to understand that God forgives us, and we should go forward out of power and love, not out of fear or self-loathing. “Keep your life simple,” she suggests. “Remain open to opportunities, and do whatever God has planned for you. Don’t restrict yourself or your dreams. hristian FM’s Care-A-Thon is coming up February 9 through 13, 2015. It is their annual fundraiser for support of their ministry but this year it has special meaning – the theme is ***25 YEARS***
Any struggle was worth it. Christian FM’s ministry is to reach out to people every day, 24/7. Early after his arrival to the station Jon received a letter from a 7 year-old girl saying: “I listen every day. My family doesn’t go to church. I learn about Jesus through your radio station.” There are stories of divine moments – probably some never told – of people turning on the radio and hearing a song that helped them in the very moment of sorrow or despair. “The right song at the right time” is how God touches people’s lives through Christian FM.

In 2007 – at the time it seemed a crazy idea – they were approached by a syndicator about making Christian FM available to a network of stations across the country. Jon emphasizes: “We try to share the Gospel in a relatable way. It is simple, not complicated, encouraging. We try to be real. As for me moving forward I am choosing to take an exciting journey of exploration, communication, acceptance, forgiveness, and unconditional love for everyone in my life including myself (which could be the most challenging yet rewarding experience and accomplishment of all)! I am one of those people who have decided it’s time for an overall change. Time to let go of the past (being totally honest, is not so easy to do) forgive myself (again not a very common practice) and begin again! By choosing to change the thoughts, beliefs and habits (internal and external) that have occasionally weighed me down and not always served me well. I have decided it’s time, my time to take life changing action to achieve the life I truly desire by embracing my purpose for wellness and restoring my health and vitality, naturally. I am inviting you all to do the same… how ready are you to listen to your desires, renew your hopes and dreams and see the world your world not as it is, but as it could be? Add exciting new foods and exercise into each day. More water, an extra serving of a vegetable and a brisk walk each day can make amazing changes with very little strain on your wallet or time. Over time as your health improves your mind/body will guide you to the healthier choices naturally. Many of the books and plans make you feel you must do all or nothing, which isn’t so. Just adding healthy choices into everyday will make a difference. TUTTO FRESCO The meal that was served to me and guests was as sweet as my first kiss (if not better)!! I must say that my expectations were very high and I definitely was not disappointed. The chef, Pasquale, outdid himself beginning with a scallop appetizer; surrounded with diced shrimp, wild caught blue crab, bits of lobster and a smooth blush cream tomato ragu! I usually do not like scallops or shrimp, however, I now have a new found love for both! It was smooth, delicate and delicious! Our second course was rigatoni a la vodka, which was served with pancetta, cremini, shitake, Portobello mushrooms and the most scrumptious petite peas I have ever eaten! My favorite pasta is rigatoni and this dish was superb and totally unique! It truly had pizzazz! The final course was Mediterranean Sea bass, very fresh, laden with fine julienne strips of yellow squash, zucchini, white wine and fire-roasted tomatoes. It was tasty to the point of heaven-sent! We sampled three desserts: pumpkin cheesecake, very light and sensual, Kailua chocolate mousse cake was totally decadent and devilishly delicious. The grand finale was the homemade cannoli!! The shell was light and crunchy; the traditional cream was rich and divine! Our waiter, Alex, did an outstanding job, very attentive, helpful and knowledgeable. The atmosphere is calming and serene, very amenable to a wonderful special night out! Enjoy entertainment on the weekends with dining inside or out on our casual covered patio. The Cake Lady in Fort Pierce is truly one of a kind!! I was very impressed with the entire operation, especially the cupcakes which I had the privilege of tasting! Owner, Staci started the business years ago after attending a class with renowned chef, Nicholas Lodge and she was “cuptivated” and in love with the art of cake decorating!

All her ingredients are natural and fresh. She is very creative and will design a cake for any occasion, to fit any personality/life style. The cupcakes I tasted were so unique it’s difficult to describe their “deliciousness!” I loved the white chocolate/ macadamia nut the best! It was light and moist with white chocolate chips and macadamia nuts, filled with white chocolate mousse and topped with vanilla butter cream! What’s not to love? Next was their very own, one of a kind, signature flavor, lavender and lemon! It was lavender in color and taste and filled with lemon curd and cream bouquet butter cream. I was a bit skeptical, but oh my goodness, what a creation! Absolutely fabulous! There are over 80 different flavors. They also make cake pops, chocolate lollipops, fruit bouquets, etc. Each large cupcake is only $4.00. Cakes vary by number of slices and the extent of the decorations. Staci and her team, Sammy, Josh, AJ, and Jessica are very involved with the community and offer many “after hours” events in the shop. For instance, “Girl’s Night Out” is a class that teaches cake decorating techniques; also they are considered the “Culinary Academy” for St. Andrews School. You know the expression, “Whatever Lola wants…”? Well, reverse that to “Whatever you want, Lola gets!” My lunch at Lola’s was like being in S E A F O O D E A T E R Y Chef Owned New Bedford, MA! This was the “Perfect Lunch.” All the fish is fresh, fresh, fresh!
Lola’s is noted for their “fried belly clams” their lobster roll and their “bottle neck” fries! I started with grilled salmon over a bed of fresh greens with a generous amount of feta cheese. I also had Lola’s special salad with octopus! This was absolutely superb! The octopus was delicately cooked; soft and very pleasing to the palette a fish taco was served utilizing fresh cod, which was scrumptious! Dolphinfrancaise was my absolute favorite, served with artichoke hearts over rice and veggies using a “special spice” that enhanced the flavors of everything. My “co eater” sampled the clam “chowdah,” which was creamy, fresh, hot and delicious. It was a combination of perfectly sized diced potatoes and fresh, not tough, clams! If you are a fan of clam chowder, you will be mad about this one!! For dessert, I had the beignets, which were better than I ever had In New Orleans, light, fluffy and scrumptious! Bernard and his wife, Lise are the gracious owners and chefs. They are most accommodating as well as savvy entrepreneurs! Lola’s is open 7 days/week for lunch and dinner and have been in business in Stuart (7 yrs), Palm Beach and Port St. Lucie (almost 3 years). Strength Training the secret weapon to anti-aging
Here’s a sobering fact of aging: everyone is at their strongest between the ages of 24 and 27. After that, we’re all on a downhill slope when it comes to strength and balance – unless we’re doing strength or resistive training to slow our own decline As human beings, aging is obviously a part of our natural life cycle, but there are several influences that affect when and how we age. Factors like food, environment and healthy or unhealthy habits, all play a role in the aging process. However, there is another key component to aging gracefully – exercise. In fact, many studies prove exercise can reverse aging in both the young and the old. If you’re determined to maintain strength for everyday activities, it’s never too late to start. Most people do not realize how much strength they have lost until they try a challenging physical activity that reveals their weaknesses. Not only will strength training keep you stronger and more stable in daily life; it may also improve the health of your bones. When you add weight to the body, it places pressure on the bones and stimulates bone growth to adjust for that extra weight. People at risk for osteoporosis can combine strength training with other lifestyle changes to help slow the progression of their disease. Other important aspects include a balanced diet focused on whole foods. Receive regular medical care, keep the mind active and stimulated and keep healthy social relationships. Starting and maintaining all of these habits will lead to a longer, fuller, and more energetic lifetime. To establish a weight resistive program, find a qualified trainer to help you develop a customized program for you that slowly builds your strength. One good reason to work with a coach: everyone will hit a plateau at some point. A good trainer can keep introducing your body to new challenges that work all the muscle groups. It’s also important that you work with someone who understands your goals, Not everyone can afford to work out with a coach on a regular basis, but at least consult someone to get you started. A trainer can customize various routines, suggest proper form and help you avoid injuries. If you plan to manage your own workouts, start modestly. Here are a few tips when starting a new strength program. • Make it a priority to learn correct lifting mechanics. • Work with a program that progressively overloads the muscles. • Always perform exercises in a pain-free range of motion with controlled joint movements. • Keep normal breathing patterns during resistance exercises. • Begin resistance training programs with minimal training loads to allow adequate time for the joint(s) and associated connective tissues to adjust to the loads. • Develop better balance and muscle coordination by having them perform several exercises in a standing position using free weights, medicine balls or other exercise props. • Plan workout time efficiently. Working more than 60 minutes may be too fatiguing.
