Hello dear readers, Setting sails into summer. R & R anyone? I am ready! Pressing on to my next intention this year, “Stop and Smell the Roses.” It’s vacation time for me. Too often I can get caught up in the busyness of work and everyday life. Maybe you can relate. A dear mentor of mine often told me, “Be good to yourself.” She was right. We are not promised tomorrow, but today, the present, is a precious gift. As has been said, “The #1 offender of kindness is busyness”, that would include being kind to ourselves. Kick off your summertime shoes and experience the day. “One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it’s worth watching.” from The Bucket List. “He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; He who keeps understanding will find good.” Proverbs 19:8

4 Summer Challenges from Christian FM

C

hallenge yourself to only listen to things that are “true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, of good repute. If there is any excellence and anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.” (Phil. 4:8) Christian FM was created to provide an alternative to the many negative, discouraging messages that reach our ears throughout the day. Let’s purposefully weed those out and fill the blanks with truths and affirmations based on God’s word.

R

Recreate your morning routine to include Bible reading and prayer. Even if you already have a routine like this, you might need to rethink it for summer as

12

many of our schedules will change. For students, this is the perfect time to start a routine, as you’ll likely have quieter, less rushed mornings. One thing’s certain, making time with God a priority will only make your summer richer and more focused.

U

Unplug. Find ways to disconnect from smart phones and computers. Feel like a kid again by taking every opportunity to get outside and enjoy God’s creation. Don’t get too busy that you forget to commune with the Creator of the universe and enjoy his declarations of love for us. One great way to do this would be to join in the fun of Christian FM’s The Great Treasure Hunt where you can listen for clues and hunt for treasure keys hid-

den all across the Treasure Coast. One of these seven keys will unlock real Spanish treasure from the 1715 fleet. Pick a day of the week and make it all about focusing on others. Our society tells us to love ourselves more, but the Bible says, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” (Mark 12:31) indicating that most of the time, we have no problem loving ourselves. Instead, we’ll find what we’re really looking for by getting the focus off of “me, myself, and I.” Anxiety and depression run rampant in our society; so let’s find a way to remind those in our lives that they’re cared about. In the process, we’ll find our own stress and sorrow wane.

Stretch Zone® “reeducates the muscles,” which often result in the baby boomer population living a more active and pain free lifestyle. There are many benefits from getting stretched. Stretch Zone works with the muscle tonus (muscle’s nervous tension) in a scientific way:

The benefits of the Stretch Zone Method® include: • Correcting compensational shifts and muscle imbalances • Increase and maintain range of motion • Enhance physical and athletic skills • Improved sleeping patterns • Increase muscle relaxation • Relieve stiffness and soreness • Feel lighter & younger • Reduction in Stress The major difference between other modalities and Stretch Zone is the Stretch Zone® Patented Protocols and the Stretch Zone® Patented Stabilization System that takes the positioning and stabilization of clients to a whole new level. Together We Can Solve Hunger B A G E L B R O T H E R S O F N Y. C O M

E Every week nearly 100,000 individuals along the Treasure Coast struggle with food insecurity. Treasure Coast Food Bank (TCFB), the largest hunger relief organization on Florida’s Treasure Coast, works tirelessly to provide direct services and outreach programs to help support children, seniors, and families in need. With a staff of over 30 employees, and a fleet of more than 5,400 volunteers, TCFB distributes millions of meals annually to our neighbors in St. Lucie, Indian River, Martin, and Okeechobee counties. Founded in 1988, Treasure Coast Food Bank works to solve hunger by providing direct food service programs, running innovative grassroots initiatives,

educating the public about the struggles people face in our communities, and advocating on behalf of those in need. In partnership with farmers, manufacturers, retail stores, and nearly 300 schools and partner agencies, Treasure Coast Food Bank serves as a bridge between food sources and individuals who are struggling to put food on the table. TCFB provides more than 20 programs and initiatives intended to feed, lead, and strengthen the individuals they serve. The School Pantry, Backpack Program, and Summer Feeding Program are all designed to reach children where they live, learn, and play and directly support them throughout the school year and beyond. TCFB also collaborates with community partners such as public housing, senior centers, and medical clinics to provide 20 pound boxes of shelf-stable food as a supplement to our senior population who are struggling to make ends meet. Often times, these individuals have to make the difficult choice between food purchases and daily necessities of living like medications. Mobile Pantries are offered monthly

throughout the year and provide approximately one weeks’ worth of food to households living in underserved areas of the community. Each mobile pantry distribution includes fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy dairy products, lean meats, breads, and other shelf-stable items. Direct client services, such as Your Plate and Whole Child Connection, help individuals and families gain long-term food security, better health, and selfsufficiency by providing the connection to a complete network of community resources. Treasure Coast Food Bank’s newest initiative, the Florida Agriculture and Nourishment Collaborative, is a fresh food production plant. This multipronged social enterprise program is expected to channel 25 million pounds of fresh, nutritious produce from area farms into the hands of food-insecure individuals and children during its inaugural year. It also will generate new jobs in the community and create skillsbased training opportunities.

It also will generate new jobs in the community

16

BETTER LIVING & MARKETPLACE MAGAZINE • BLMMAG.COM

“Our fresh food production plant will not only provide food for today but will give our community a steady supply of food for tomorrow. Working together we will nourish bodies - we will nourish economic opportunity by providing new revenue streams to local farmers, new employment opportunities and job training, and fresh, healthy food for people in need,” said Treasure Coast Food Bank President and CEO Judith Cruz.

The fresh food processing plant includes both a wash/chop/packaging system to convert whole produce into pre-cut, refrigerated portions and a cook/vacuum-pack system to process raw vegetables into ready-touse products, such as tomato sauce or sautéed peppers. The processing plant features wash stations and cool storage rooms, steam generators, commercial refrigerators and freezers, and two cooking “kettles” which hold a combined 300 gallons of food.

Treasure Coast Food Bank will be delivering locally grown fresh produce and specialty cooked and prepared produce to partner agencies in the next few months and to area public schools in the fall of 2017. Holistic Health

I

I believe water is the most important nutrient in our diet. Unfortunately it has been replaced in our diets with high sugar energy drinks, coffee and tea. Even our children are drinking juice and milk instead of water. What aggravates me the most is companies are marketing artificially sweetened powders and liquids with packaging promising good health. It is so important to make water your first choice. I promise you will see your health improve by hydrating yourself properly. Here are some reasons to start drinking more water. Water is:

The solvent for important biochemical reactions, supplying nutrients and removing waste. Essential for maintaining blood circulation throughout your body. The maintainer of body temperature. As you exercise, your metabolism and your internal body temperature increase.

Water carries heat away from your internal organs before serious damage occurs, which can lead to heat stroke, and even death. The heat travels through your bloodstream to your skin, causing you to sweat. As the sweat evaporates, this allows you to cool off and maintain a safe body temperature, optimal functioning and health.

18

Daily water intake must be balanced with losses to maintain total body water. Losing body water can adversely affect your functioning and health. Once you start feeling thirsty, you’ve probably lost about 1 percent of your body water and are dehydrated. With a 2 percent water loss, you could experience serious fatigue and cardiovascular impairments. It’s important to note that individual fluid needs differ depending on your sweat rate, the environmental temperature, your clothing, humidity and other factors. Hydration tips As summer temperatures hit, here are a number of important tips. Drink enough water to prevent thirst. Monitor fluid loss by checking the color of your urine. It should be pale yellow and not dark yellow, too smelly or cloudy. For short-duration (less than 60 minutes), low-to-moderate-intensity activity, water is a good choice to drink before, during and after exercise. Any time you exercise in extreme heat or for more than one hour, supplement water with a sports drink that contains electrolytes and 6 percent to 8 percent carbohydrates. This prevents “hyponatremia” (low blood sodium), which dilutes your blood and could also lead to serious impairment and death.

WATER...

A Nutrient that should not be overlooked Begin exercise well hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids the day before and within the hour before, during and after your exercise session. Avoid alcohol the day before or the day of a long exercise bout, and avoid exercising with a hangover. Eat at least five cups of fruits and vegetables per day for optimum health, as they all contain various levels of water and the all-important nutrient potassium. During exercise, for those who experience high sodium losses, eat salty foods in a pre-exercise meal or add an appropriate amount of salt to sports drinks consumed during exercise. Orange juice is high in potassium. Dilute juices, such as V-8 or orange juice, 50/50 with water so that the drinks are 6 percent carbohydrate solutions (the same as sports drinks), which will empty from your stomach quicker than 100 percent juice (juices are naturally 12 percent solutions), allowing the electrolytes and water to quickly reach your heart and organs. by Joanne Augusto Owner of Nutrition World 101 N. We’re not surprised that young people are backing away from renting and embracing buying. Data from Fannie Mae and other sources have long shown that the vast majority of us prefer to own a home than to rent one. Most of us have a nesting instinct, and we can’t really nest in a home we don’t own. No matter how magnanimous the landlord might be, he or she will never be magnanimous enough to let the renter fully his way. Business GROWS in

SPACES

OďŹƒces or storefronts are essential for successful businesses. A commercial space search, like a residential home search, is guided primarily by LOCATION, SIZE, and PRICE-each of which impacts the others.

LOCATION

Business owners often consider location impo to be the most important aspect of selecting a space. New business owners want to attract customers, and established businesses often prefer to stay close to their customer base. If location is most important to your business, you may need to adjust size or budget. Higher-demand locations will have higher prices and lo limited availability.

SIZE

Many variables go into determining the square footage needed for a business. e amount of space required to run your business will have a signiicant impact on monthly rent and location. Be ready to compromise on location and price if you have a xed space requirement.

PRICE

Commercial rents are typically presented as price per square foot, and there may also be additional building maintenance fees. Your budget may ultimately determine the location and size of your business space.

Pastor Mike’s Corner View The Educating & Working with the Seller My first job is to convince the seller that I and my company know what WE are doing. You must also educate the seller on the market, transaction process, etc. so that his/ her expectations are realistic and surprises are minimized. The following list includes some important topics to discuss with the seller. • The seller must be serious about selling his or her business. Take the time to explore why he or she is selling. Why now? What will the seller do after the business sales? Who has the power to change the seller’s mind (spouse, partner, etc.)? Are they serious about selling? • The seller must be convinced that the price and terms are fair – as you must be. • The seller must be aware that the “marketplace” ultimately determines the price.

• The seller must understand the importance of giving you ALL information concerning the business “up-front.” And, yes, this includes any pending litigation, any licensing issues, etc. The seller must understand that surprises later in the transaction process can be deadly to the deal.

Silent Partner

During the 1800’s, a famous organist traveled from town to town across America giving concerts. It was in the days of the old pump organs, so in each town he hired a boy to work the pump behind the organ during the concert. After a performance in one town, he couldn’t shake the young boy he’d hired. As the organist walked towards his hotel in the cool of the evening, the boy beamed up at him. “We sure had a great concert tonight, didn’t we?”

• The seller should underestimate the importance of the lease information. • The seller should also be informed that structuring the price, terms and the down payment may be the key to selling the business. • The seller should be encouraged to think about all the outside advisers he or she will be using and give you a list of them. • The seller should also be educated regarding today’s buyers.

The next night, the organist gave another concert in the same town, and once again the boy worked the bellows behind the scenes. The opening piece of the concert was a beautiful fugue by Bach. But as the performer masterfully attacked the notes of the second piece, the music suddenly stopped, his rapid fingering bringing nothing more than a faint clicking sound from the keyboard. That’s when the little boy stuck his head around the corner of the organ, smiled, and said to the maestro, “We aren’t havin’ very good concert tonight, are we?” Note: A successful partnership recognizes the importance of every player.

B A G E L B R O T H E R S O F N Y. C O M

God tell us in the Bible that, “As Iron Sharpens Iron, so will one man sharpen another”. We are better together. God created us to be relational. We were not meant to be “Lone Rangers”. We need each other. When I’m by myself I’m in bad company. My stinking thinking can really cause me problems. When I am surrounded by fellow Christian brothers and sisters I receive encouragement and support when needed. I don’t have to take on the problems of life by myself. “You are better off to have a friend than to be all alone, because then you will get more enjoyment out of what you earn. If you fall, your friend can help you up. But if you fall without having a friend nearby, you are really in trouble. If you sleep alone, you won’t have anyone to keep you warm on a cold night. Someone might be able to beat up one of you, but not both of you. As the saying goes, “A rope made from three strands of cord is hard to break.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12) Let us lean on each other and seek out comfort from being with each other and support one another. ( Just a Thought) God Bless, Pastor Mike
