Letter from T H E P U B L I S H E R ST. LUCIE

See opposite page for details. This will be fun! A few weeks ago I was invited to attend the Hibiscus Children’s Center volunteer luncheon. How I was struck by the emotional testimony of Chloe, the volunteers and employees. I could not ignore the call to include an article in this issue. When God puts things on my heart or in my path I do not believe it is by accident. This three-page article was created by a 14 year old resident/ student of Hibiscus (GDIC), which helped the student earn 4 certificates and enter Module III of the IV taught. Bravo! People helping people, is what I believe makes the world go round. Flip the pages for more reading, learning, saving and so much more!

Hello dear readers, The birds have flown north, school is out, and summer is here. I am already enjoying the wood storks visiting and anticipate the arrival of the roseate spoonbills, my favorites. This is our anniversary issue! It has been a great pleasure publishing the original “Better Living” Magazine, serving our communities and business owners for nine years. Wow, has St. Lucie grown since moving here in 2005. I am truly grateful for meeting so many people from all walks of life that have enriched mine “for a reason, a season, and perhaps a lifetime.” Help us celebrate! From now until next summer we invite you to participate in our “Brag Book” contests. As I am sharing a favorite photo of mine from this Mother’s Day, I’d love you to share one of yours. If you do not receive or have the time to pick up our magazine please log onto blmmag.com or email us at betterliving@betterliving.com for convenient home delivery.

Thank you loyal readers, thank you advertisers, and thank you contributors for your support! I hope you get to do what you love to do this summer. Happy Father’s Day & Happy 4th! I think I’ll take a trip “How does one become butterfly?’ Pooh asked pensively. ‘ You must want to fly so much that you are willing to give up being a caterpillar,’ Piglet replied. ‘ You mean to die?’ asked Pooh. ‘ Yes and now,’ he answered. ‘What looks like you will die, but what’s really you will live on.” -A.A. Milne, Winnie the Pooh Here’s the challenge until next time: “Be kind to those who push your buttons.” See you in August… With gratitude, If you are involved in a community program that is making a positive difference, please contact me @ Valerie@blmmag.com. You just might be the next story.

“The Lord gave the word; Great was the company of those who published it” Psalm 68:11 Please remember to support your local small businesses.

FORMER CLIENT SHARES

MESSAGE

HOPE OF

Chloe Henry with her daughters, Aryhanna and MacKenzie.

H

Hibiscus Children’s Center was privileged to host its Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on May 3rd at Riverwalk Center in Ft. Pierce. Volunteers from all of Hibiscus’ facilities across the Treasure Coast were welcomed to the luncheon held in their honor. This was the perfect time to say thank you for their unwavering dedication and volunteerism that has provided over 9,000 volunteer hours this year. The support of the volunteers helps to improve the lives of abused children and youth living at the Hibiscus Shelter, Hibiscus Village and the Sanctuary4Kids Emergency Shelter.

The impact the Hibiscus volunteers have had on children and youth was greatly emphasized by an emotional message from a former Hibiscus Shelter client, Chloe Henry. When Chloe came to the Hibiscus Shelter in Jensen Beach at ten years old, she couldn’t have imagined that she would never return home or live with her family again. She and her brother had been removed from their mom due to child neglect. Eventually, her mom’s parental rights were terminated and Chloe and her brother were officially foster care children until they aged out at 18 years old. Chloe, who grew up in Ft. Pierce and is now 31-years old, shared how the hurts and disappointments are still vivid memories, but she has learned to turn her difficulties into a positive message instead of letting negative circumstances overwhelm her and cause her to become a bitter adult.

Hibiscus Children’s Center 30 Years of Saving Children Our Mission: To maintain a safe shelter for children who are abused, abandoned and neglected by providing prevention, early intervention, and advocacy in quality residential, assessment and recovery programs. Hibiscus Services: Since opening our doors in 1989, Hibiscus has provided over 325,000 safe nights of care to abused children across the Treasure Coast. Last year, over 1,750 children & families were served in our abuse prevention and recovery programs. Hibiscus Supporting Families in Crisis, a Prevention Program for St. Lucie County families, served 485 children & families last year. Since opening our doors in 1989, over 60% of children served throughout Hibiscus’ programs have originated from St. Lucie County. Sanctuary4Kids is a pre-placement and emergency shelter that provides abused children with a safe place

after being removed from their own abusive homes. Located in Port St. Lucie, the Shelter is funded in part by Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County and United Way. Call for Volunteers: The Hibiscus Children’s Center St. Lucie Guild welcomes volunteers to help raise critical funds and awareness for abused, abandoned and neglected children in our community. Thousands of abused children have been provided safe haven and hundreds of families have received life-changing services from Hibiscus over 30 years … but we can’t do it without the help of our wonderful volunteers!

Please contact Lori at (772) 334-9311, ext. 404 to learn more about joining the St. Lucie Guild and how together, we can give children the love and hope they desperately need.

POEM If you planted hope today in any hopeless heart, If someone’s burden was lightened because you did your part, If you caused a laugh that chased some tears away, If tonight your name is named when someone kneels to pray, Then your day was well spent. –Author Unknown Chloe Henry and her daughters, Aryhanna and MacKenzie, pictured with Hibiscus CEO Paul Sexton at the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon.

BETTER LIVING & MARKETPLACE MAGAZINE • BLMMAG.COM

Chloe’s journey began with an initial placement in a local foster home before being placed at the Hibiscus Shelter. She expressed that her mom was a loving and caring mom, but struggled with substance abuse and mental health issues. During these times, Chloe stayed with relatives and friends, and in her words, “learned that monsters are not scary looking like you think, but sometimes come in the form of people who say they love you”. She lived at the Shelter for one year before being placed in a few different foster homes, and then returned to the Shelter for another year and a half. Chloe was filled with anger, hurt, and trauma as the result of physical, mental, and sexual abuse and neglect. “When I was first removed, I did not want to be there at the Shelter. I refused to find the good in it. I told them it was like I was in jail and can’t do anything I want to. I just chose to see the bad in everything. I was angry, scared and overwhelmed. I really behaved poorly and made bad choices, but it was because I was hurt inside and I didn’t trust anyone. But, after a little while, it started sinking in that the staff and volunteers were good and cared about me. I knew this was a safe place and that the staff loved me – they never gave up on me no matter what I did or said to them. I wish I could go back in time and say thank you to the staff and volunteers for never giving up on me”. Twenty years later, Chloe has two young daughters and has a positive message she wants to share with youth. “My passion is to use my trauma to say, I’ve been there, and I do know how you feel. But if you always dwell on the bad, then there’s no joy in life and it takes a toll on you. Always look for the positives”.

Chloe concluded her message with this, “I know I am a good mom to my girls because I am able to show them the love and care that I received from the Hibiscus staff. ”

“I want all the supporters to know that what you do means so much. Please never think it is small or doesn’t matter, it does matter and on behalf of the children who can’t say thank you, I say thank you for them and for myself. You have changed my life and made me who I am today.” Chloe has visited the Hibiscus Shelter and Village and shared her message of hope with our children. They were thrilled to meet someone who had walked in their shoes and understood exactly what they were feeling. Hibiscus Children’s Center is privileged to have Chloe share her positive and inspiring story with our youth. She is a remarkable young woman and an incredible role model. Chloe also has a message for the community, “I can’t stress enough that if everyone would be willing to speak up for those without a voice, it would put a significant dent in the number of children being abused”.

If you would like more information about how to get involved and help change the life of an abused child, please visit us at HibiscusChildrensCenter.org or call 772-340-5750 .

Holistic Health

I

In today’s world the word diet sends People running!! We all want stronger, leaner bodies but do not want to stop all the treats and socializing that we enjoy. There is a solution, for the most part, painless! Intermittent fasting is effective and easy for most to follow. Most commonly used for weight loss, but also serves as an impressive antiaging tool.

Intermittent Fasting

After researching some committed followers they reported decrease in body fat, more lean muscle, higher energy levels and better sleep. In order to embark on an intermittent fasting plan you can simply print a chart on line or decide which 8 hours of your day you would like to eat. Most prefer to have their calories in the later part of the day. I love having my breakfast shakes so I do the 8 hours in the middle of my

day. For example I wake up at 6 am, I begin eating at 9 and have my last meal at 5. If I know I have dinner plans I begin eating later in the day. Typically a man fasts for 16 hours and a female 14. You can still consume the same amount of calories just in a shorter time span. Most people find it comforting knowing they can still have foods they love while creating a healthier body. Most research states that the avoidance of food, therefore not using your digestive function allows your body to utilize fat and become more efficient. I am using this system now and find it simple and effective.

The View

P

BY LYNNE C. ERBE, O.D.

Planet Earth is part of the Solar System and rotates around the sun annually. Although the sun is apparent to most of us year round, summertime usually involves more time outdoors and exposure to sunlight rays. The sun sends both visible and invisible rays/radiation. Visible “light” (radiation) is the part that can be visualized in the form of a rainbow or when the sun’s rays pass through a prism. The colors are broken down into respective wavelengths. Some of us may remember the acronym ROY G BIV which puts the wavelengths in order from longest to shortest: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and indigo violet. Invisible “light” (radiation) is commonly known as UV (ultra violet light) and actually miss named since it does not have any color... not even violet. It just means UV is the next level above the violet wavelength on the spectrum chart. UV can also be

DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT THEM broken down into wavelengths. Most of us have heard the terms UVA, UVB and UVC. A and B are known to cause skin cancer and eye damage such as pterygia, cataracts and macular degeneration. C does not pass through the Earth’s protective ozone layer.

THINK SPF 50

To best protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays always wear good quality sunglasses, the darker the tint the more protection. “Shades” is not just a term for looking cool or to amp up your celebrity status but truly that...shade. For OTC styles look for a sticker that states 100 % UVA and UVB protection. For ultimate protection, look for large/oversize or wrap around styles. Remember the highest visible light is blue indigo violet and the neighbor of UV. New research suggests blue blockers are also important. When prescription sunglasses are needed, your eye care professional will always be there to help you see your best and protect you from harmful sun damage.

BELLS AND WHISTLES

There are lots of options to add to sunglasses today. Mirror styles add privacy, fashion tints and specialty colors add drama and photo chromic lenses e.g. Transitions add convenience. Bronze lenses enhance colors...I like to think of Dorothy opening the door the first time in the land of Oz. Polarized lenses cut through glare for excellent clarity and visual comfort. Whether you decide to sport your Top Gun aviators, adventure into the Matrix, be glamorous like Audrey at Tiffany’s or rock it like Jake and Elwood have fun with it!

You’ve undoubtedly heard the expression “time heals all wounds.” Unfortunately, it isn’t true. As a pastor, I frequently talk with people who are still carrying hurts from thirty or forty years ago. The truth is time often makes things worse. Wounds that are left untended fester and spread infection throughout your entire body. Time only extends the pain if the problem isn’t dealt with.

Can I Get A Testimony?!

How God Has Changed My Life Through Celebrate Recovery Andrew – When I first attended Celebrate Recovery, I didn’t believe anything was wrong with me. After all, I had never messed with drugs or alcohol. What good was a 12 Step program for me? How wrong I was! Anger, lust, codependency… Celebrate Recovery is helping me allow God to put my life back in order. Brenda – God has brought me to my knees through the struggles of my marriage, my codependency and my

husbands’ sexual addictions. I was ready to run away from the problem and let the wind carry me away. Celebrate Recovery provided a solid foundation to hold on to through my time of need, Praise God for bring me to my knees; my pride was strong, and I was not easily bent. God knows what is best even when I can’t see it. Allen – Celebrate Recovery is a mirror that allows me to see the things in my life that God wants to change.

Jennifer – I first attended Celebrate Recovery to find out how to get and keep my husband sober. After working through a full step study, I realized I had just as much of a need to change. Six years later, he’s sober (all through his journey in Celebrate Recovery) and I’ve worked more and more on my own issues. Today I am able to boast of my weakness and to help lead other women to find truth.

“What is Celebrate Recovery?” by Rick Warren The Bible clearly states, “All have sinned.” It is my nature to sin, and it is yours too. None of us is untainted, Because of sin, we’ve all hurt ourselves, we’ve all hurt other people, and others have hurt us. This means each of us needs recovery in order to live our lives the way God intended. Celebrate Recovery is a biblical and balanced program that helps us overcome our hurts, hang-ups, and habits. It is based on the actual words of Jesus rather than psychological theory. Celebrate Recovery is more effective in helping us change than anything else I’ve seen or heard of. Over the years I’ve seen how God has used this program to transform literally thousands of lives and to help people grow toward full Christ like maturity.

The Great Treasure Hunt

I

If you’ve ever wondered why they call this the Treasure Coast, this is your chance to get up close and personal with the dramatic history of our coastline. It all started in July 1715 when a fleet of twelve Spanish ships left Havana for the long voyage back to Spain. They were loaded down with silver, gold, and all manner of precious jewels. But…they didn’t get very far. Right along our coast, they encountered the raging winds and pounding waves of a hurricane! All but one of the ships was lost, and the precious cargo spilled onto the ocean floor. Spain immediately began salvage operations, but to no avail. Only some Christian FM JUN half.indd 1

24

of the bounty was recovered – the remainder hidden beneath the roaring waves. However, in 1948, a man strolling the beaches near Sebastian Inlet found several gold coins and set off a series of treasure hunting adventures that continue today.

Coast over a period of several weeks. Every key finder will win a piece of Real Spanish Treasure, however, only one key will unlock the Motherlode of Real Spanish Treasure (worth thousands of dollars) from our partner West Bay Trading Company!

Every treasure hunter must register for their hunting license at www. christianfm.com and then begin listening for clues on the air in order to find a key. A total of seven keys will be hidden along the entire Treasure

Although searching for “treasure” is fun, we hope you’re reminded that real, lasting treasure is less tangible. Our hope and the greatest gift in our lives are the promises of Jesus and the everlasting life He offers to all who believe.

Beginning in mid June Christian FM will kick off The Great Treasure Hunt… a chance for you to win Real Spanish Treasure!

Our goal is to make this summer a great time filled with memories with your loved ones, educational moments, and having an overall fun time.

Y

You should make backups of your information as often as possible to prevent data loss. External Hard Drives and USB Thumb Drives are your best bet for ease of use and store-ability. Online storage is a viable solution although it is prone to theft through hacking and or online spoofing. Backups should be kept in a safe place away from the computer/s when not being used to backup. This ensures in the event of fire, theft, or natural disasters that your drive is not lost with the computer. You should

B A G HOME

never leave the backup device plugged in all the time; this puts wear and tear on the device and could cause the backup drive itself to fail prematurely. Not leaving it plugged in all the time can also prevent you from accidentally knocking it off your desk while it’s running. We suggest Samsung T5 SSD along with traditional drives from Western Digital and Seagate for External drives as they usually have 3-year warranties on their devices. External drives range from $69.99 to $199.99. The average cost

of recovering data from failed Hard Drive ranges from, $900-$3000. We highly recommend backing up as often as possible. Peace of mind computing by having backups is a valuable state of mind. By Mike Lewis Mike’ Computers Downtown Ft. Pierce 772.448.8153

Pastor Mike’s Corner View Pastor Mike Beath

There are many factors that affect a company’s value. In recent articles we

discussed the quality of the financial statements, historical performance, management, and appearance. And the first quarter of 2018, shows that businesses that follow those guide lines, sell for more. Here is what BizBuySell had to say: BizBuySell.com’s First Quarter 2018 Insight Report shows a recordbreaking quarter for the business-for-sale market. Sale prices reached new highs with business

sales increasing over 13 percent versus last year. Small businesses sold for a median sale price of $245,000 in the first quarter of 2018, the highest sale price since BizBuySell started tracking the data in 2007 and a 3.4 percent increase from a year ago. The median asking price of sold businesses also hit a record high at $262,000, a 4.8 percent increase from 2017. Small business owners should take note of the record prices.

For those considering a sale, now appears to be a great time to at least contact a broker, BOB LEONE www.sellmybusinessportstlucie.com and ask how your business stacks up against the overall market.

Can You Imagine Your Life Without Fear? Each sunrise seems to bring fresh reasons for fear. They’re talking layoffs at work, slowdowns in the economy, flare-ups in the Middle East, turnovers at headquarters, downturns in the housing market, and upswings in global warming. The plague of our day, terrorism, begins with the word terror. Fear it seems has taken a hundred-year lease on the building next door and set up shop. Oversized and rude, fear herds us into a prison and slams the doors. Wouldn’t it be great to walk out? Imagine your life, wholly untouched by fear. What if faith, not fear, was your default reaction to threats? If you could hover a fear magnet over your heart and extract every last shaving of dread, insecurity, or doubt, what would remain? Envision the day when you can trust more and fear less.

We fear being sued, finishing last, going broke, the mole on the back, and the sound of the clock as it ticks us closer to the grave. Every season seems to bring fresh reasons for fear. And it feels dreadful. Fear sucks the life out of the soul, curls us into an embryonic state, and drains us dry of contentment. Wouldn’t it be great to escape it? According to Jesus, this is

34

possible. The one statement he made more than any other was this: “Don’t be afraid.” We should consider Jesus’ invitation to courage. Fear will always knock on your door. Just don’t invite it in for dinner. And for heaven’s sake, don’t offer it a bed for the night. The promises of Christ are simple: we can fear less tomorrow than we do today. There’s a stampede of fear out there. Let’s not get caught in it. Let’s be among those who stay calm. Let’s recognize danger but not be overwhelmed. Acknowledge threats but refuse to be defined by them. Let others breathe the polluted air of anxiety, not us. Let’s be numbered among those who hear a different voice, God’s. Enough of these shouts of despair, wail of doom. Courage does not panic; it prays. Courage does not bemoan, it believes. Courage does not languish; it listens. It listens to the voice of God calling through Scripture, “Fear Not!” It hears Christ’s voice comforting through the hospital corridors, graveyards and war zones; Be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven. (Matt. 9:2) Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid. (Matt. 14:27) Let not your heart be troubled. ( John 14:1) Don’t be afraid. (Luke 12:7) God Bless, Pastor Mike Morningside Church Recovery Pastor
