S
chool is out. It’s hard to believe that we are half way through this year. Even though I don’t care much for the extreme heat of Florida summers, I do fare much better than in years past. Sometimes I can even tolerate wearing my boots! That’s funny because my kids call me Crunchy. Not exactly sure why, but maybe it has to do with me being a 70’s girl. I suspect though, that it has to do more with my interest of the more natural ways of living in today’s world. June is National Get Outside Month. Turn to our center spread for a little inspiration.

Every so often I stop and think how as a country we have become so wrapped up in the things of this world, technologies, industry, that we lose focus on the simple things in life. Having served the majority of my adult life in the United States Marine Corps, it became second nature for me to dot all I’s and cross all T’s when I entered the corporate environment with FedEx Ground as a Region Human Resources Representative. What I want the citizens of Port St Lucie to know, en masse, is that my mantra New Leader, New Vision and New Direction is not merely a catch phrase that I want to sound good during the 2016 local election cycle. But rather the mission I plan to demonstrate and expect to resonate within the culture of this great city. The City of Port St Lucie is long overdue for an overhaul relative to morale and countless economic failures just to name a few. Humbly, I want to lead the charge in an effort to correct the aforementioned. Port St Lucie is the fastest growing city within the Treasure Coast and public servants must do better as we collectively move further into the 21st Century. With your support you can expect me to speak with conviction and directly address issues on your behalf, remain transparent and with great resolve advocate for you in a manner that protects your best interest. That’s why the American Cancer Society offers a number of services to help people with cancer and their families overcome obstacles in their personal cancer fight so they can focus on getting well. One of the toughest challenges people face is getting to and from muchneeded cancer treatments. They may be too sick to drive themselves, may not have a car or someone to drive them, or may not be able to afford gas or other transportation costs. What is the Road To Recovery program?
The American Cancer Society Road To Recovery program is a curbside-to-curbside transportation service that provides free rides to cancer patients to and from their cancer-related treatments. Trained volunteer drivers donate their time and the use of their personal vehicles to help patients get to the treatments they need. The program is offered to people with cancer who have no means of transportation and/or who are unable to drive themselves. Access to transportation is a major factor in cancer treatment, and this American Cancer Society service offers assistance to people who otherwise might not be able to follow their treatment plan as prescribed by their health care team.

Every day, American Cancer Society Road To RecoveryÂŽ volunteers provide free rides to and from treatment for those with cancer. And every day, we need more drivers.

Many people need daily or weekly treatment, often over the course of several months. Increasingly, these treatments are provided on an outpatient basis, which means that the person must have a way to get to the appointment. Many people do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves. Family and friends may help, but they may not have the time or financial means to assume the total burden of frequent trips to treatment centers.

Pursuing the Outdoors ~ For any of you that know me, growing plants is not my strength. Turning them brown, definitely! I usually buy them at the supermarket, which is very expensive so I am determined this year to grow them myself. I decided to start with my favorite herbs. Not only delicious in food but they all possess wonderful health benefits. I am hoping if I explain the health benefits you too will embark on a journey to grow your own herb garden.
1. Basil: Basil is
known to have powerful antioxidant properties. The natural antioxidants found in basil can protect the body against damage from free radicals. Basil also contains flavonoids, which protect cell structures from radiation and oxygen-based damage. Basil is a rich source of beta-carotene, which helps protect cells from free radicals. Basil is also a good source of magnesium, which promotes cardiovascular health by relaxing muscles and blood vessels, improving blood flow and lowering the risk of irregular heart rhythms and cardiovascular spasms. The enzyme-inhibiting effect of the eugenol in basil certifies basil as an anti-inflammatory food providing important healing benefits as well as relief from inflammatory bowel conditions. It can also provide immediate relief from the gas in your stomach and intestines, treat constipation, stomach cramps, indigestion and flatulence.
2. Coriander: Coriander seeds have anti-
oxidant properties and dietary fiber that promote the healthy functioning of the liver and

facilitate bowel movements. They help in the production of digestive enzymes and juices that ease the process of digestion. If you suffer from indigestion, bloated feeling, and flatulence, include coriander seeds in your diet.
3. Mint: Mint is my fa-
vorite. Often overlooked in recipes it has so many health benefits it needs its own article. Just to mention a few, it’s amazing at aiding the digestive system. Great as a cup of tea during mealtime. I use it often for nausea and headaches. It also has germicidal qualities so it is excellent for oral care.
4. Parsley: This poor
herb is usually viewed as a decoration on a plant. What I love most about parsley is how forgiving it is about time and storage. It’s perfect on every dish and in every smoothie or shake. You only need a little to get its health benefits. Parsley is known for its anti-inflammatory abilities, anti cancer, antioxidants, and its vitamin A & C content. If growing an herb garden seems overwhelming just start with one. Also choose Organic plant or seeds if possible. Remember health is a journey, even one bite or one step counts! Good Luck!

H Happy Birthday America H The Bill of Rights: A Transcription The Preamble to The Bill of Rights Congress of the United States begun and held at the City of NewYork, on Wednesday the fourth of March, one thousand seven hundred and eighty nine. THE Conventions of a number of the States, having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best ensure the beneficent ends of its institution. Note: The following text is a transcription of the first ten amendments to the Constitution in their original form. These amendments were ratified December 15, 1791, and form what is known as the “Bill of Rights.” AMENDMENT I Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. AMENDMENT II A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

AMENDMENT III No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law. AMENDMENT VI In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall
have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence. AMENDMENT VII In Suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise re-examined in any Court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law. AMENDMENT VIII Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted. AMENDMENT IX The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.
