Letter from P U B L I S H E R

Hello dear readers,

R

e-fresh, re-new, receive Spring as a new day arising. Stepping into this Easter season, I am reminded, “...behold all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 We see this as the snow melts away (on the news), the trees have small green buds and the flowers open beautifully. This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24 People are healed, relationships mended, minds & souls restored. Wishing you a blessed Easter and Passover! At the St. Lucie County Fair, I witnessed for the first time ever The Swine Auction. What fun and out-of-the-ordinary it was for me. As I watched the younger generation proudly parading their hogs around the auction arena, I posed for a quick photo with our Sheriff Ken Mascara. The extra special feature was meeting with Brandon Perdue, teacher of the FFA Agricultural program at Westwood High School. Julie White has written a great article about him and the FFA program in this issue. Pastor Anthony Bruno, from whom I have had the pleasure of guidance, contacted me about a true survivor, Demetrius Gollett. Read on into these pages to learn how as a community, we can rise up, come together and create a miracle. Similarly, turn to our JDRF ONE WALK, an article sharing “A Mother’s Hope.” As always, I proudly bring you reputable local businesses serving our community. Please enjoy the exclusive offers and information offered to all our loyal readers. Shop local and build our county strong. All things work together for our good. God bless, If you are involved in a community program that is making a positive difference, please contact me @ Valerie@blmmag.com. You just might be the next story. “The Lord gave the word; Great was the company of those who published it” Psalm 68:11

Why Chiropractic? Q: How can Chiropractic help me? A: Chiropractic can assist you by maintaining your spine’s proper alignment. Every organ in the body is under some kind of neurological (nerve) control. So doesn’t it seem sensible that when the nerve impulses are compromised by misalignments, the nerve ow is altered, and your body doesn’t function at its optimal level? Q: What is an adjustment? A: An adjustment is a gentle correction of a mis-aligned joint that relieves pressure on nearby nerves and help restore proper movement into that joint.

egg production unit where the students will create the business plan from marketing to finances to selling and go on to implement it. Brandon Perdue and co-teacher Jenna McDaniel are guiding FFA students into exciting paths for the future. FFA is an Agricultural Educational Club within the school system and actual in-school work comprises 1/3 of the program, another 1/3 is an SAE – supervised agricultural experience – take learning from the classroom to use in hands-on experience (such as raising a steer to market), and 1/3 is the FFA Club which comprises extracurricular activities and leads to scholarships for higher education. It is student run with the emphasis on leadership training and currently of the 10 officers two are young men, that’s right, the rest are young women!

ou’ve double-checked your calculations, completed the engineering and machining, and finally you’re piloting the small aircraft on your mission. You’ll be capturing aerial views that will give you the intel you need for your next mission to... no – not plan an attack on a hostile target... to use the intel from your drone to determine the requirements of your acreage for fertilizer to correct the pH and eliminate the need for blanket fertilizing. This will save money in airplane and supply costs and help produce high quality feed and therefore high-quality cattle or a high-yield crop. FFA is taking the 21st century by the horns (pun intended) and here at Fort Pierce Westwood High School, Saint Lucie County’s magnet school, one of next year’s goals is to implement this drone program which will include engineering and building the drones to fly over fields and get aerial views. This will require determining the calculations and doing the work! Challenging but very rewarding. Another goal is to start an

You can choose from two tracks: Veterinary Assistant or Agricultural Technology. With the first at graduation you will have a state-recognized CVA certification and be able to go on to work in a veterinary’s office or continue in school to become a veterinary tech or go to UF to obtain a veterinary degree. You are exposed to all types of animals and learn the business side of the career. The school’s vet lab has full dog kennels, operating room, anesthesia room, and a small animal lab. With the Agricultural Technology track you will learn about new technology for animals and plants and learn the business and mechanics of farming to prepare you to enter the work force in the career of your choice or go onto college. The school has 25 acres being cleared for planting in row crops and pasture. After you learn all aspects of the tracks including leadership and pick one track to focus on you’ll not only attend class but visit veterinary hospitals, farms, and other facilities and in on the job training obtain class credit. At graduation you complete state certified tests

to $10,000 from selling products from their supervised agricultural experience. FFA also emphasizes community service and has worked with Treasure Coast Food Bank. They also held a fundraiser for student in need. Projects depend on the needs of the community.

to obtain industry certification equalling 6 college credits toward any university in Florida. A group of veterinarians and agricultural professionals and scientists create the tests. You will graduate as a marketable quality product!

The FFA motto expresses it well: Learning to Do. Doing to Learn. Earning to Live Living to Serve Saint Lucie County Fort Pierce Westwood High School FFA is still accepting students for the coming year. Any student in St. Lucie County can apply and the district buses students in from all over the county. Classes range from 10 to 31 students. The goal is to grow the program and if you are a self-motivated and self-disciplined student this is the place for you. Email Brandon Perdue for the application at Michael. perdue@stlucieschools.org. He will walk you through the application process.

An important aspect of the FFA experience is working to raise the funds needed for supplies. The program emphasizes identifying goals, working the projects, meeting the goals, and learning life skills. The State of Florida provides for the facilities but money is earned by running a doggy day care including grooming for hands-on experience and preparation for the CVA by Julie White exam or having sales that encompass running them as a business taking orders and collecting money. The food booth at the Saint Lucie County Fair is the biggest money-making enterprise. Also at the notorious pig auction the FFA chapter sold the chapter hog for $17.25/lb. Thanks to the buyers listed below who purchased the pig for $11/lb and donated it back to FFA, allowing them to re-auction the hog for student enrichment. Praise to FFA student Rhett Bauman for taking care of the chapter pig including grooming, and showing and representing the chapter. FFA can help with the big question: How do I pay for college? Participating in FFA competitions not only provides valuable life skills and experience but the national FFA awards $2.2 million in scholarships each year. You will complete a two-page application describing your school projects and community involvement. Also seniors have been known to earn $2,000

A Day for Demetrius

Turning A Tragedy Into A Triumph on the couch while smoking. Demetrius was there that day because it was a school holiday and his mom had dropped him off with the great grandparents to go to work. Doctors at Shriner’s Hospital in Cincinnati told Demetrius’ mother, Chiquita Andrews, that the healing process would be long. Sure enough, after that dreadful day of the fire on February 18, 2013, Demetrius had to undergo more than 10 skin grafting operations and other treatments. Demetrius’ grandmother, Delores Scott, had to take turns with Chiquita, in making those plane trips to Cincinnati. Ms. Scott has now lost her job due to voluminous amount of hours devoted to Demetrius’ care. Chiquita is now the sole breadwinner in the home. Ms. Scott and and Chiquita find themselves struggling to keep the roof over their heads. Expenses stemming from those frequent trips to Ohio and Miami have taken a toll financially.

The emotional impact of the loss of family members has not been fully tallied. Demetrius has displayed great courage as a young man. From the Inside Out

by Melissa Coleman Owner of Skin Fitness Studios

Raindrops in Spring

• Reduces Inflammation in the Body – Three known, natural anti-inflammatory oils, wintergreen, thyme and peppermint, are used in this technique.

What if there was a treatment that not only reduced the pain but helped to balance and heal the body and spirit as well?

• Relieve Pain - A study in 2001 confirmed that the existence of infectious microorganisms near the spine causes pain and inflammation. Raindrop Therapy’s use of oils with anti-microbial properties cleanse the tissues surrounding the spine and relieve tension in the muscles through increased circulation.

Many of us walk around in chronic pain every day and have no idea how to obtain relief without resorting to surgeries and pharmaceutical pain relievers. Chronic aches and pains are not to be thought of as a curse. They are your body’s way of saying, “Listen to me, something is not right.”

Raindrop technique is a powerful technique using essential oils that was developed by D. Gary Young in the 1980s. It combines several holistic modalities to bring balance and alignment to the body in a non-invasive manner. It also stimulates all the body systems on a physical and emotionally level. This technique involves applying therapeutic grade essential oils to the spine, neck and feet. The session lasts about an hour however the benefits may last up to a week or more.

• Relax Muscles – Muscles that are sore, spastic or stressed will also benefit. Basil, wintergreen, marjoram, cypress and peppermint essential oils help with all the common muscle conditions.

• Create a Hostile Environment for Viruses and Bacteria along the Spine – It is a known fact that microbes actually stay dormant and hibernate along the spinal column until our immune system weakens and they are activated.

There are numerous benefits of the Raindrop Technique. Here are just a few:

• Improve Circulation – The essential oils of cypress, marjoram and peppermint all have properties that increase circulation and/or act as a circulatory stimulant softening the fascia surrounding the spine and stimulating a healing response.

• Balance and Re-align the Energy Centers of the Body – The combination of massage techniques and the synergistic blend of essential oils bring electrical and structural alignment to the body.

• Improve Immune System Functions – Thyme and oregano essential oils are known to support the immune system by helping the body release toxins and eliminate viruses and bacteria.

• Re-aligns the Spine in a Non-manipulative Manner – Microbes along the spine contribute to curvatures and can be the cause of spinal abnormalities such as scoliosis, lordosis and kyphosis. The oils of oregano, marjoram, thyme and basil have anti-viral and/or antibacterial properties.

• Emotional Well Being and Release – Essential oils are small enough molecules to cross the blood-brain barrier and affect the limbic system where emotions are stored and controlled.

• Reduce Stress and Anxiety - Not only can the oils and massage techniques enhance positive emotions such as joy and happiness, but they can also help us release negative emotions that are subconsciously stored on a cellular level.

• Help Detoxify the Body Systems – The oils being high in phenols cleanse cellular receptor sites and assist the lymphatic system’s detoxification of the body. Call SFS for your FIRST Raindrop Session today.

Spring Renewal

by Joanne Augusto Owner of Nutrition World

Many of us, this time of year, are so excited to begin or refresh a garden. The human body is very similar to a garden, believe it or not. Your first step to a successful garden is to remove unwanted debris and weeds. For us it would be toxic food, build up in our colons, and chemicals in our environment. The second step is to add nourishing soil, without chemical fertilizers, Pesticide and genetic modification. Similarly, our bodies also need healthy food that gives us vital nutrients and enzymes. Organic preferably, no GMO’s, artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners or preservatives. Now the garden is ready for the seeds. I believe the seeds to a garden are the emotions or feelings for us. We choose what to grow in both. I prefer to plant seeds of joy, hope, peace and especially love! Add some clean fresh water and lots of sunshine and both will be restored and renewed. Here are a few tips to use for yourself, please don’t try them in the garden. Lol! Begin each day with water. I love it enhanced with lemon, apple cider vinegar and mint. Take a quick walk in nature. Even five minutes can change your outlook, increase your oxygen and reduce your stress levels. The last tip is to breathe! Studies suggest that practicing breathing exercises thru the nasal passages will decrease blood pressure, help calm your body and improve your focus. Begin with a three second count in, hold for three and slowly exhale for three. Try to lengthen the count as you continue to practice. We must not let a day go by without feeling thankful for the gift of life. Happy Spring!

JAIME’S NATURAL NUTRITION SMOOTHIE & JUICE BAR It was a misty gray day. I needed a break from the gloom so I popped into Jaime’s Natural Nutrition Smoothie & Juice Bar. Brightly painted walls, comfy seating, soothing Caribbean music, and the warm friendly face of McKenna greeted me as I entered. I felt healthier already! Three years ago Jaime opened what she planned to be a tiny nutritious grocer selling smoothies on the side. Now, of course offering a host of smoothies, even some for kids, Jaime’s has blossomed with energy of it’s own. Her juices are delightful - choose from blended or juiced. (Blending uses the entire vegetable retaining the pulp and fiber while cold press juicing preserves the nutritional value without the pulp). My VitaKale (I chose “with pulp” and loved it) blended kale, pineapple, ginger, cucumber and lemon. ($5.95/$6.95). Jaime’s claim to fame: No sugar - fresh cut pineapple or apples provide natural sweetness. A “must try” the Acai bowl, frozen sorbet of organic Acai fruit from Brazil and guarana (they will tell you how to pronounce those) with your choice of toppings is a velvety treat for any time of day ($6.49). Jaime’s creations are entirely organic with no artificial anything. Add-ins will make your choice a meal replacement with 20g protein. Vegan options replace whey with soy or plant protein and there are many dairy-free selections. You can also buy your supplies and make yours at home. The shelves are fully stocked from vitamins and supplements to fresh fruits and vegies, even quinoa chips! There is too much to tell here, so you’ll need to visit! Jaime’s is also getting involved with schools to offer delicious healthy options and watch for their new juice truck! (A converted ice cream truck). 1864 NE Jensen Beach Boulevard, Jensen Beach FL 34957 In the Publix Shopping Center (Ocean Breeze Plaza) 772-334-4101 Facebook: Jaimes-Natural-Nutrition-Weight-Loss

An authentic slice of New York is carving its way into the heart of Port St. Lucie. Fratelli’s Pizzeria and Restaurant opened its kitchen to hungry and happy family, friends and neighbors in mid February... a true Italian family eatery. Raised and trained in their father’s Long Island restaurants, brothers Leo and Guy serve up traditional Italian pizza and pastas with their unique and tasty twist.

T aste

by Julie White

Causal, yet sleek and elegant surroundings invite diners to relax, visit and linger over a meal prepared with great pride and care. “We make everything from scratch” says Chef Leo. Guy adds “and use only the freshest ingredients.” I realized that’s an amazing feat once I perused the lengthy menu of offerings. Fresh salads with Leos’ secret recipe house vinaigrette, hearty home-made soups, Pasta Fa joule, dozens of Pasta dishes with savory sauces. A Pesto Rosso over Shrimp Chicken with penne delighted my palette ($14.95). Fresh seafood and a host of tender meaty entrees round out the choices. My companion enjoyed Leo’s own Roman Ravioli, a blend of zesty sliced meatballs and potatoes stuffed into fresh raviolis ($12.95). A perfect end to a meal is the cannoli with a just the right sweetness of freshly prepared creme and chocolate morsels. Traditional hand spun pizzas are a specialty. I found reasonable prices and Guy shared why: “I learned from my dad to keep the price down and the food great and you will do well.” Lunch specials include a drink under $6. Pasta Night is coming on Mondays boasting salad, pasta, coffee and desert for under $9. A real New York bargain! But every day is a good day to dine at Fratelli’s Pizzeria and Restaurant.

S

ix years ago my precious daughter was diagnosed with a serious illness that forever changed our lives. The days before E.’s diagnosis I noticed changes in her daily activity. She was always thirsty, constantly having to go potty and feeling worn out and tired (completely out of character). I searched the web and everything pointed to diabetes. I remember sobbing as I read about the associated first signs and symptoms. My husband did his best to console me saying, “Everything is going to be okay.” After a chilly Sunday morning at the park I will never forget how my heart felt when she walked in the door and fell fatigued and exhausted into my arms. I called my husband to come home right away while we headed to the walk-in clinic. I felt so anxious as I sat in the lobby cuddling my baby girl in my lap thinking “please, don’t let this be what I think it is.” Then those words flashed on the blood glucose meter as the nurse pricked E’s finger for the very first time...“high, high, high.” I felt helpless as my daughter lie in the hospital bed with IV’s. You could tell she was terrified but she was trying her best to remain brave and calm. I remember telling jokes or laughing about the cartoon on TV, anything to keep her distracted. Then the doctor came in and gave us the diagnosis - diabetic ketoacidosis. The days and weeks that followed were filled with a range of emotions.... anger, sadness, worry, fear and even a little guilt. Soon I realized it was time to adjust and accept the challenges that we were getting ready to face together as a family. With time we have gained knowledge and confidence, learned from mistakes, celebrated successes and moved away from the intense feelings we felt at the diagnosis. The daily routine can be mentally, emotionally and physically challenging. E. is the true hero in this story. She is the one with the most obstacles - stuff to check, stuff to inject, stuff you have to do or not do, eat or B A G E L B R O T H E R S O F N Y. C O M

A Mother’s Hope

E. reading her diabetes book to her new friends in the hospital and teaching them all about it: not eat... so much to learn. However, she’s adjusted SO well and I couldn’t be more proud of her and the bravery she has shown. Above all, I hope she remembers that there is so MUCH more to her than this disease. My hope is that one day in the near future she will have the chance to live that “normal” life free of the pricks and prods that she endures every day. Until then, we will continue to fight this disease and support the cause. HOPE...It’s powerful. It’s real. It’s all we’ve got. April 18, 2015, is the JDRF ONE WALK For A World Without Type 1 Diabetes. JDRF is the global leader in Type 1 Diabetes research.
