Letter from T H E P U B L I S H E R

Hello dear readers,

It’s that Florida time of the year again…warm, warmer, HOT! We wish all our winter friends safe travel and a fair summer, until next season. I have some thank you’s to share. The first and foremost is to God. He afforded me one of the happiest experiences in my life to date. The marriage of my son and new daughter was more than wonderful! From our last issue: Thank you to Robin Goldman and Chris Adams at Heathcote Botanical Gardens for inviting me to the yearly Bonsai Ball Benefit. So much beauty in nature and people. What a great turn out. I kept an ear-to-ear smile all night. Also, thank you to Barbara Allen and Susan Varn for having me as their guest at the 12th Annual FloriDay Benefit for Restoration House. I have to say the historic home and landscape where the benefit was held were eye candy, filling my spirit with thankfulness. Frances and Mareya, the founders of Restoration House greeted all the guests as they entered. I have true admiration for the two lovely women I was so happy to meet. In this issue you will read about “Save the Chimps.” How could you not with Arthur staring at you on our cover? Who knew that we had such a high level of humanitarianism here in St Lucie? I certainly did not. Triana Romero, Director of Communications, at “Save the Chimps,” gave writer, photographer and myself a personalized tour and history. Amazing, is what I have to say. Please get involved if it moves your heart. We hope that you enjoy our columns, including The Taste and special Art Showcase. Our Community Events Calendar has 3 months of what’s happening. Please patronize our advertisers, shop locally and support each other. Happy Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Father’s Day… and Happy Independence Day!!! Let’s stay grateful. We really live in paradise. God Bless~

Valerie Calabrese

I dedicate this issue to my beloved Mom & Dad.

If you are involved in a community program that is making a positive difference, please contact me @ Valerie@blmmag.com. You just might be the next story. “The Lord gave the word; Great was the company of those who published it” Psalm 68:11

One Physician’s approach to modern medicine

Patients&Doctors

practicing medicine the old fashioned way

“art is long; life is short; opportunity is fleeting; judgment is difficult; experience is deceitful.”

What makes our practice relevant? In our practice we strive to answer two questions every time: How can I help you feel better? How can I help you live longer? What can you expect from your doctor? Interest in humanity (the secret of caring for patients is caring for patients). An attentive individual with honesty, enthusiasm, optimism. Respect people, healthy or ill, regardless of who they are. Support patients and their loved ones when and where they are needed. Promote health as well as treat disease. Embrace the power of information and communication technologies to support people with the best available information, while respecting their individual values and preferences. Always ask courteous questions, let people talk, and listen to them carefully. Give unbiased advice, let people participate actively in all decisions related to their health and health care. Assess each situation carefully, and help whatever the situation

- Hippocrates. Aphorisms This quote attributed to Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, written about 400 years B.C. Remains vibrant and significant today as it was then. What makes modern medicine relevant? When you think about great medical achievements of the modern age, comes to mind our profound advances in molecular understanding- analysis of DNA, amazingly complex testing, early detection of cancer, use of effective medications to allow a heart to beat stronger. Progress is exceptional. Yet, the more significant achievement is spelled in a much simpler way: KEEP MAKING PEOPLE HEALTHIER.

What do i offer to our patients? A measure of compassion, curiosity and humility and the commitment in each encounter to give what they need that day as an offering of conversation, friendship and hope.

This requires investment in a concept we call “continuity-inspired medicine” to create an environment where people can request and receive a personalized care for their medical problems, from the patients initial concern, to being able to access a doctor in a timely manner, to receiving appropriate treatment; A PATIENT-PHYSICIAN PARTNERSHIP.

Right there on the corner of US 1 and Prima Vista Blvd., in the Publix plaza is Family Hair Care. It’s an inviting, comfortable, good feel and professional salon. I know this because owner Madeline Dahm invited me for a truly special treat. Madeline has been in business for 26 years and at this location for six years this June. Collectively, there are many years of experience as there are more than ten friendly cosmetologists on staff. From young to older, customers are greeted upon entering. I love that they offer their clients coffee. Just right for me as I settle down for color, highlights, deep condition, cut and style. Thanks to Linda, my hair looked and felt amazing. That is just what will keep me going back. This is the topper for me, when calling to make an appointment you will speak directly to your stylist. Now that is personalized service. Above being a full service salon, men and women can enjoy getting a manicure and their tootsies looking like new. Please do stop by and see for yourself. Tell them Valerie sent you! Linda & Valerie

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

– Mahatma Gandhi

mascots. Arthur, barely two years old, was sold to the owner of a minor league baseball team with the idea of putting him on exhibit at promotional events. He was housed in a rundown roadside animal park in New Hampshire. The owners were frequently cited for Animal Welfare Act non-compliance. By this time, Arthur had developed high anxiety, displayed through rocking back and forth and clinging to his younger companion’s back for comfort and security. Chimps are totally unsuitable as pets or circus performers once they turn 6 to 8 years old. They are just too strong, too smart and too aggressive. A troubled chimp is a volatile chimp. Too often, these stories end in tragedy. But in Arthur’s case, after a lawsuit was filed, the park’s owner was forced to find a humane solution.

Say Hello to Arthur

So, one day out of the blue, the telephone rang at the Save the Chimps Sanctuary here in St. Lucie County, FL. Dr. Carole Noon, a world-renowned primatologist and the Sanctuary’s visionary and founder answered the phone. “We have two beautiful chimps here with no place to go,” said a voice on the other end of the line. “Can you help?” The caller was from NEAVS – one of the oldest and most respected animal advocacy organizations in the country. And though her sanctuary was still in its formative phase and short on people, space and supplies, Dr. Noon, as she so frequently did, said “Of course. We will do whatever it takes to make it work”.

Arthur began his life, back in January of 2000, living in a concrete cell at the Coulston Foundation biomedical research lab in Alamogordo, NM. Within a year of his birth, the facility lost its government funding due largely to having a deplorable record of violations of the Animal Welfare Act. Arthur and almost 300 other chimps found themselves in dire straits.

Within a few days, quarters were created for Arthur and Phoenix, personnel were shuffled around and transportation arrangements were made to provide these two lost souls a Life Home. Arthur can now call a sunny island in south Florida home. He has integrated successfully into a large social group. He shows none of the anxiety symptoms of his earlier experiences. Having lived his entire life in captivity, he is learning to be a Chimpanzee! Arthur’s story is not unique. Almost every chimp at the Sanctuary has come from heart-breaking conditions and

Many of the young and cute ones were sold as pets or

a background riddled with misery, isolation and abuse. There are a couple exceptions – those rare chimp babies born at the Sanctuary. But most have come from research labs, the NASA space program, and circuses. Chimps originate in equatorial Africa. They are smart and incredibly trusting. Did you know they share 98.6% of the same DNA as humans? No wonder they are now considered endangered! The temptation to use chimpanzees to learn more about ourselves was too great. Dr. Carole Noon had studied primates her entire adult life. She was in a unique position to understand their physical and emotional needs. She began searching throughout south Florida to find the perfect spot to make her dream for these magnificent creatures come true. Wouldn’t you know a 150 acre abandoned orange grove became available right here in western St. Lucie County! Because chimps can’t swim (their muscle mass is too great), she separated the acreage into 12 islands, using a series of water canals as a natural barrier to keep the chimp communities separated. Each of the 3 to 5 acre islands would have no more than 25 members, she decided. Each island would have a Night House, where the chimps would be individually fed three times each day and where those with special needs could feel safe and secure. Each island family would instinctively select their own Alpha, whose natural leadership tendencies would make him (or her) the one in charge. The first chimps began arriving in 2001 from the Air Force in New Mexico. A chimp’s life expectancy is a little over 60 years. Many of those originals residents were already middle-aged or beyond. An ongoing challenge for Dr. Noon and now her staff has been to choose which island family is best suited for each individual chimp. The family integration process takes a lot of time and a lot of patience when someone like Arthur arrives. The new kid is constantly monitored to make sure the chemistry is right for his/ her unique personality. Staff learns to differentiate normal family squabbles from serious community conflicts. Sometimes, relocation to a new, more compatible island is the only from l to r: Veterinarian-Dr. Jocelyn Bezner, choice. Valerie Calabrese-BLM Publisher, Director of Communications-Triana Romero

The island life

Dr. Carole Noon died on May 2, 2009, at age 59. Her time to go came way too soon but her vision and her love lives on. Now the Sanctuary houses 260 chimps, with room for up to another 40. One hundred percent of the primates have flourished in their new environment. Now being on a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables and high protein Monkey Chow has made a visible difference in every single one. Coats that were dry and tangled are now shiny and healthy. Eyes that were dull and tired now sparkle. Muscle tone has been restored. Here’s just one story of so many: Bobby endured over 34 liver biopsies in his former life. He was under anesthesia over 250 times. Separated from his mom at birth, he acted out his pain and frustration through self-mutilation. He took it out on himself, not others. But he is a hero – and a beloved member of his island family. Bobby’s Island! He is such an ongoing inspiration on overcoming adversity that the staff voted to name the island after him. The Sanctuary has an annual budget of $5.4 million – an annual food budget alone of $400,000 – 1,300 bananas per day! It takes $16,000 per year to take care of one chimp. Over 60% of the chimps take daily medication – for issues as mundane as birth control to such ailments as arthritis, high blood pressure and heart disease. One chimp has diabetes. One has epilepsy. Donations come from far and wide – from a four year (continued on page 14)

Fundraisers, like the Chimp’s Kitchen Tasting at Cobalt in Vero Beach every November and the Sanctuary Tours for members three times each year are essential. New members are always being sought and are gratefully welcomed. The member dues help with costs and their enthusiasm is the lifeblood of the sanctuary.

Special “day projects” happen all the time. Recently, local firefighters donated a huge pile of old hoses and spent the day making “firehouse hammocks,” held together with nuts and bolts. I saw first-hand just how 1,300 bananas eaten every day! much the chimps are enjoying them. A full time staff of nearly 60 and a rotation of up to 70 volunteers make sure the chimps’ meals are prepared, their labeled medication trays are up to date and their blankets and stuffed animals are washed daily and hung on the line, ready for another night of nesting and cuddling. In addition, they plan and implement the chimps’ daily “enrichments,” necessary to keep their minds active. Recreation, toys, puzzles, special treats, even painting (yes, Chimps paint!) – would not be possible without these dedicated and loyal personnel. The Sanctuary is always looking for DEPENDABLE volunteers – snowbirds not excluded! All it takes is filling out an application online at their website to get the ball rolling. If you cannot volunteer, but want to help this worthy organization, visit them on Facebook or online at www.savethechimps.org to see their ongoing Wish List. Just recently, a request for a popcorn popper was answered in 24 hours! Better yet, become a member and be on their mailing list for upcoming fun events. To quote Gandhi, as they do at the Sanctuary, The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself, in the service of others.”

EVERY FAMILY HAS ONE

By Annett M. Robbins CPC, ELMP

Business Image Improving Month

Well we’ve all heard it, and probably even said it before. “You never get a second chance to make a first impression”. With May being “International Business Image Improving Month,” the timing is actually pretty perfect for you to step out of your routine and your comfort zone to create and integrate a strategy that will improve your company’s image and make a great first and lasting impression! But where do you begin, you might ask? Well... • If you have a Business Development Plan, does it navigate you from where you are now to where you want to be? • What does your Action Plan look like and does it guide you through the next 6-12 months? • How does it tap into your strengths, interests and passions to cultivate creativity and productivity? • Does Brainstorming, Team Building and Employee Participation come into play? • Who would you say were your top 3 competitors and what do they do differently then you? • How long ago was your last Business Evaluation and how did it rate overall?

FREE ROOM CARPET CLEANING

• How do you think your customers, clients and or patients would rate your business, service or practice if given the chance? When was the last time you looked at it from their perspective?

Jensen Beach

The Arts S HOWCASE

T

he “Earth” Without “art” is just...”Eh”.

You can really feel the “Old Florida” charm as you stroll around on the shell crushed sidewalks of this century old riverfront town of Jensen Beach. There is so much to do, see and experience from art galleries to unique boutiques, authentic eateries and even 4 star dining destinations. Jensen Beach, a quaint Key West picturesque Art and Cultural community truly is the Art and Soul of the Treasure Coast! How does art impact our lives? Art is fun. Art is history. Art is expression. Art is Life. Art it’s all around us and to see it through an artist’s eye is play full, creative, captivating and energizing! The Art Cottages of Jensen Beach is all of that and then some, a bit off the beaten path, but well worth the few steps just off Main and across from 11 Maple Street! The Local Way Art Gallery is an eclectic array of ocean energy infusing all mediums of art from fun to fine, everything is hand crafted right here in Martin County by local artists and beautifully displays a variety of sea jewelry, glassware, magnets, music, repurposed mobiles, soaps, lotions, framed paintings, prints and photography, even phenomenal furniture. Paige and Joe Lyons set up shop in downtown Jensen after rapidly outgrowing their mobile box trailer Joe (a JB native) initially customized to display and sell their friend’s artwork at local fairs and festivals. The gallery price range is as varied as the art they display with pieces starting at $3 for hand sewn colorful “Klutzy Lutzy”

Paige’s newest project and passion is their “Local Kids” program offering and encouraging children to engage in art, any medium of their choice and the Local Way offers them a home to display and sell their work... at no charge to the young artist. Paige’s passion, dedication and support of the arts, the community, the young artists and musicians are evident in the gallery and in the neighborhood! Water Colors Gallery, Barbara Lapham, established her delightful gallery in Jensen 3 years ago. Water Colors is her medium of choice, mostly nature and birds, magnificent birds of all shapes and sizes. Barbara has been representing herself for about 20 years, starting in Mexico in the 90’s before returning to her Florida roots. The studio is full of (continued on page 27)

Make each bite count

by Joanne Augusto Owner of Nutrition World

In today’s world of fast paced lifestyle and highly processed food it is quite possible to be obese and malnourished. Without the proper guidance some may find it difficult to understand how much of each food group to consume. I would be amiss not to begin with water. Obvious yes but so many walk around thirsty for water but consuming sugary energy drinks instead. My rules is dividing your weight in half, and then divide that number by how many hours you’re awake. For example if you weigh 150lbs. you need to drink 5oz. of water per hour. I find it much better for the body to sip throughout the day verse chug a few times a day. Protein constitutes the majority of the structural tissue in the body, and is involved in most bodily functions. Some examples of protein are chicken, beef, turkey, and fish. Wild salmon is my favorite; salmon contains more than 25g. of protein and about 182 calories per 3.5oz. serving. Organic eggs are also a good choice. Try to incorporate vegan forms of protein like tempeh (choose non GMO) and a variety of beans. Experts disagree with the guidelines for protein. I like to consume a minimum of 25% of my body weight in grams. Fat is the next category that seems to be the most confusing. My general rule is man created the fat or messed with it don’t eat it. Some great examples of healthy fats are nuts, seeds, coconut, olives and my favorite avocados. Keep in mind if you fry these oils you are degrading the integrity. Counting fat grams in these natural sources are difficult unless you are the scale and measuring cup type of person. Just eat it as a condiment to each meal. Fruits and vegetables have an amazing ability to heal your body.

— Just one lemon has more than 100 percent of your daily intake of vitamin C, which may help increase “good” HDL cholesterol levels and strengthen bones.

— Garlic is a powerful disease fighter that can inhibit the growth of bacteria, including E. coli. — Allicin, a compound found in garlic, works as a potent anti-inflammatory and has been shown to help lower cholesterol and blood-pressure levels. One medium stalk of broccoli contains more than 100 percent of your daily vitamin K requirement and almost 200 percent of your recommended daily dose of vitamin C — two essential bone-building nutrients.

These are my favorites... lemons, garlic, broccoli and granny smith apples.

Granny smith apples have less sugar than most apples and help digestion. Compared to other commonly consumed fruits in the US, apples ranked second for highest antioxidant activity.

11 Maple Street is a meet up destination for South Floridians from Vero to Miami Beach. Small plate options range from $10.95 to $26.95 with a varied selection from Black Rice and Calamari Fritters (a delicious and fun presentation) to Wood Grilled Kurobuta Baby Back Ribs (fantastic meal worthy portions)! We also enjoyed Crispy Calamari and Warm Escarole salad, an incredible Blue Crab cake and Fried Green Tomato tower and a scrumptious Sautéed Main Spotted Skate wing with Baja Bay Scallops. The Large Plates range from Soft Shell Crab with Conch Fried Rice, $30.00 to Wood Grilled New Zealand Elk Tenderloin at $48.00. Each one a taste bud sensation! From the Inside Out

by Melissa Brodzinski Owner of Skin Fitness Studios

Dis~Ease Fighter

As you lie on the table under soft white sheets, hushed music draws you into the moment and the scent of lavender and peppermint fill the air. The pains of age and arthritis, the ache from your overworked muscles, the sheer need of a body held in a state of tension 24 hours a day -- all cry out for the therapeutic touch of a trusted massage therapist. Once the session gets underway, the problems of the world fade into a 60 minute session of relief and all you can think about is why you waited so long to book your appointment and when can you do this again. But what if that hour of massage did more for you than just take the pressures of the day away? What if bodywork cut you injury recovery time in half? What if your sleep, digestion and mood all improved with massage and bodywork? What if these weren’t just “what ifs”?

Where we help you develop Health & Fitness as part of your Beauty Regiment.

Evidence is showing that massage done on a regular basis, meaning once a month, can help build a healthier stronger body. Here’s why.

Book your appointment now TREATMENTS Massage • Facials • Peels • Body Treatments • Dermafiling • Waxing

Massage as a healing tool has been around for thousands of years in many cultures. Touching is a natural human reaction to pain and stress, and for conveying compassion and caring. Think of the last time you bumped your head or had a sore neck. What did you do? Rubbed it, right? Healers throughout time and throughout the world have instinctually and independently developed a wide range of therapeutic massage techniques using touch. We now have scientific proof of the benefits of massage - benefits ranging from treating chronic diseases and injuries to alleviating the growing demands of our modern lifestyles. Having a massage does more than just relax your body and mind - there are specific physiological and psychological changes which occur, even more so when massage is utilized as a preventative frequent therapy and not simply mere luxury. Massage not only feels good, but it can cure what ails you.

Experts estimate that 80 percent to 90 percent of disease is stress-related. Massage is a simple tool used to combat stress by helping us remember what it means to relax. The physical changes massage brings to your body can have a positive effect in many areas of your life. Besides increasing relaxation and decreasing anxiety, massage lowers your blood pressure, increases circulation, improves recovery from injury, helps you to sleep better and can increase your concentration. It reduces fatigue and gives you more energy to handle stressful situations. In an age of technical and, at times, impersonal medicine, massage offers a drug-free, non-invasive and humanistic approach based on the body’s natural ability to heal itself. So, again, what exactly are the benefits to receiving regular massage and/ or bodywork treatments? The benefits of massage therapy include: • Improving blood circulation • Improving flexibility • Decreasing inflammation • Stimulating the immune system • Improving circulation of the lymphatic system • Decreasing stress and anxiety
