Letter from P U B L I S H E R

Dear readers,

I

have to be honest, sometimes when it comes to sitting down and writing this letter to you, I get writer’s block. So to work through that, I decided to take a walk about a half an hour before sunset (My second most favorite part of the day). The beautiful evening helped me to reflect and connect with my higher power. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are on the horizon. My parents have been on my heart a lot lately. Children (that’s all of us), let us honor our mothers and fathers, because sometimes gratitude is in retrospect. They are a gift. This is Better Living & Marketplace’s third anniversary. I am blessed to have the ability to connect people with people through the print media. We are happy to announce some new changes to Better Living. Our magazine is now hand delivered and in racks at over 100 locations throughout our county. If you, a family member or friend would like the convenience of home delivery please go to our website to order a free subscription. Joining us is our new columnist Jan Bevan. She is an expert in her field of Finance and is now authoring her “Health on Finances.” Welcome Jan, I am looking forward to your information coming our way. This May 25th is Memorial Day. I was contacted by Chief Thomas Matteo and was very moved by his involvement in helping our veterans. My father was a US Marine in WWII, my brother served recently in Afghanistan as an MP in the US Army and my son, 82nd Ariborne in Afghanistan (by the grace of God, home). Still more family members served in Vietnam and the Korean War. So, the subject is near and dear to my heart. I am honored to publish our story by Julie White about Faces of Heroes. In this issue we feature a follow up from March’s article, A Day for Demetrius and Grace Packs. Read for yourself how awesome and caring we, the people in our community are. Events, Events and more Events… Check out the calendar… Have Summertime Fun! Blessings of abundance, P.S. Thank you to Melissa Coleman for all the helpful columns, From the Inside Out. Melissa is moving on to a new career. Best wishes Melissa! If you are involved in a community program that is making a positive difference, please contact me @ Valerie@blmmag.com. You just might be the next story. “The Lord gave the word; Great was the company of those who published it” Psalm 68:11

NRCME Certification $50 DOT PHYSICALS

Why Chiropractic? Q: How can Chiropractic help me? A: Chiropractic can assist you by maintaining your spine’s proper alignment. Every organ in the body is under some kind of neurological (nerve) control. So doesn’t it seem sensible that when the nerve impulses are compromised by misalignments, the nerve ow is altered, and your body doesn’t function at its optimal level? Q: What is an adjustment? A: An adjustment is a gentle correction of a mis-aligned joint that relieves pressure on nearby nerves and help restore proper movement into that joint.

iewing this moving depiction of care coupled with anguish, wouldn’t we all rush to their aid if we could? Our veterans are still in need of this care - years later – spanning from WWI to the present. Faces of Heroes, Vietnam Warriors, Inc., is a non-profit charity, 501-3C, based in Port Saint Lucie, making it their goal to reach fellow veterans in need of shelter and medical help, specifically for the major issue of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Thomas Matteo, chairman, emphasizes that Faces of Heroes focuses on helping all veterans in our community (not just Vietnam veterans) by providing immediate emergency assistance to veterans and their families.

Chief Matteo, retired, former Chief of Police, is in a unique position to understand and render aid to his fellow veterans. He is a six-time recipient of The Purple Heart and 100% service-connected combat wounded Tallahassee, Florida veteran/USMC. “We are attempting to bring this illDec 5, 2014 Concert held to benefit, Honor Flight. There are misconceptions that PTSD leads to violent behavior. Chief Matteo explains, “There is no viable medical research that shows veterans who suffer from PTSD are subject to commit violent acts against their peers in our society. The veterans need help, but without the negative stigma commonly placed on their names.” Faces of Heroes is working to eliminate this stigma. They seek out veterans to help them take the steps needed to get to the VA to be diagnosed and get much-needed treatment and support. “We are here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ready to respond to your call with transportation, housing assistance, aid in obtaining food and clothing or paying utility bills, whatever is needed to give you the opportunity to get back on your feet.” Faces of Heroes is working to gain the respect of veterans. family and the community is essential and also for family and the community, as PTSD affects us all and, as Chief Matteo points out, “needs to be addressed by us too, not just the Veterans Administration.” The statistics of veterans taking their own lives is alarming and saddening. Chief Matteo: “We are finding that over 23 veterans a day are taking their own lives.” Faces of Heroes is participating in promoting awareness about PTSD through its involvement in a new feature film called Wounded Warriors. The film strives to clearly depict the PSTD syndrome and its impact on our communities. Chief Matteo explains: “The concept for the movie started with the song, Wounded Warrior, written by Floridian, Roger Stephens. Roger has been trying to get our message out, he is a true American. He had Grammy winner, Billy Dean, in conjunction with Marvin Goldstein, record the song.” Chief Matteo continues: “I’m trying to get our project off the ground here, in the Treasure Coast. Our large Veteran community will be honored to join this project, once they are aware of our efforts.” To make this possible, funding needs to be made through American donations. Michael Gier of Silver Dove Films, Producer/Director for the film explains: “Normally investors fund a film and then 50% of the net profits go to those investors. But this film is being funded through donations and so instead of that 50% going to investors we are excited to donate that money to nonprofit organizations that benefit our veterans.” Chief Matteo adds, “What better way to honor the veterans, by making this movie, and at the end of the film, 50% of the net profit go to veteran charity groups. We did this with the Vietnam Wall Memorial, and we can do it for this film.”

Wounded Warrior Regiment Quantico, VA Colonel Todd Rhino Shane, receiving Appreciation plaque from SSgt Echielberger, on behalf of Faces of Heroes, Vietnam Warriors, Inc.

To learn more about the movie and to lend support please visit the website, donate, and spread the word. woundedwarriorsmovie.com Also view the song’s video on YouTube. Billy Dean’s father is a WWII disabled veteran and also lost two brothers in that war. Billy expresses his heartfelt wish: “I want this message to stay in the forefront of people’s minds for as long as it takes.” youtube.com/waRtch?v=Ck9Bcqt3A8I&feature=youtube

Chief Matteo concludes with “the logic behind what we do. There are numerous organizations providing support to veterans in our community. I feel that Faces of Heroes is unique in that it focuses solely on veterans facing homelessness and struggling with PTSD.” Visit facesofheroesvw.org and stay abreast of our local opportunities for service. Faces of Heroes has no salaried employees and operates through donations and volunteers. Please help them turn the faces of our heroes into faces of hope. 16

The Gratitude That Follows ~ A Day for Demetrius At Lyngate Park in Port St. Lucie, Florida. On March 29, 2015, Second Chance Church pulled together a great benefit on behalf of 10-year-old burn victim, Demetrius Gollett. This young man survived a tragic fire that took the lives of his great grandparents. Now, he faces frequent trips for laser treatments and reconstructive care that place a severe emotional, logistical and financial strain of his single mom, Chiquita Andrews.

On April 16, our little guy went to Miami to see Dr. Jill Waibel, a world famous burn victim specialist. The prognosis is excellent for Demetrius. One day, he hopes to have complete restoration of his features as his Maker intended. Demetrius has a whole community to thank. He was “all smiles” the day of the event! He made many friends for life. Chiquita and Delores were in awe at the generosity and kindness they received from total strangers.

It was a mighty trumpet call to our whole Treasure Coast Community to assist in a great cause. Some of the artists that graced the stage included: Heather Williams, JDub, Gary Holloway, Katrina Leon, Heather Hofstee and Abby Smith, to name a few. Groups like The Reflection Ensemble and One Voice swooned and rocked the crowd. The toddlers danced and clapped in giant bounce houses. The teens climbed the imposing rock wall that was set up with a proud American flag floating at the top.

Tragedy does not have to end in defeat. A deep sense of good will rose up in our midst and rallied hearts and minds to be a great blessing. The family extends their sincere thanks to every individual, business and organization that made A Day for Demetrius a great success! The Doran family, the Macias family and the Robinson family were invaluable in their ingenious initiative and indefatigable efforts. Rev. Willie Kitt and his wife, Nancy, have been guardian angels.

Public officials were on hand. Some weaved through the crowd incognito. They included Supervisor of Elections, Gertrude Walker, St. Lucie County Commissioner and Tod Mowery. Generosity abounded from a number of sources. The St.Lucie Firefighters shared safety tips and introduced our curious onlookers to the intricacies of their rescue trucks. The Port St. Lucie Police Department ensured the safety of the event participants. PSLPD’s Assistant Chief, Richard Del Toro conferred a special medal upon Demetrius. Among the gifts Demetrius received was a special blue cap with the golden inscription: A Day for Demetrius. The event drew hundreds of people.

Summer Tune Up for Your Body

by Joanne Augusto Owner of Nutrition World

Living in Florida has its challenges. I consider the worst being our long hot/humid summer. I relocated to Florida twenty-one years ago. The first few summers seemed unbearable. Each year I learned new tricks to not only survive the summer but also actually enjoy it. The first issue was the bugs! They loved me. Even the no see ums were horrible; these tiny biting mosquitoes would keep you indoors for even the most beautiful sunrise. I found by applying coconut oil mixed with peppermint they would leave me alone. Originally I mixed it with tea tree oil but the smell kept everyone away! Coconut oil has amazing benefits for your skin. It will not only work to repel the mosquitoes but hydrate your skin and heal it as well. Another summer hazard is dehydration. I won’t bore you with a drink more water lecture, instead motivate you to create hydrating meals that will nourish your body and hydrate all your cells. All fruits and vegetables hydrate the body, providing tons of nutrients and fiber. A convenient way to prepare, store and travel with these fruits and veggies are called salad in a jar. Just chop up fruits and veggies store in a mason jar and try to eat three a day. I love to use ginger dressing, but any healthy dressing will do. You could even make your own infused water in the jars with fresh herbs, lemon or any fruit and veggies. If you own a juicer this is the time to dust it off and put it to good use! The only side effect will be possible weight loss. I’m sure everyone is okay with that. Extra pounds can really make you feel hot and sluggish during the summer. This next suggestion may surprise most of my readers. Exercise. Yes, exercise. Through exercise, your body learns to sweat and purify. Your skin is the largest organ and we need to assist it in its ability to remove toxins. Not only will these toxins may us stinky but they will hinder our health and energy levels. Summer exercise can be fun. I love to mow my own lawn. No, not with a riding mower! You can garden, ride a bike or take a swim. Our sun has the ability to create vitamin D in our body. This nutrient can heal bones, prevent cancer and strengthen our immune systems. Please just choose your sun times wisely. I love the first and last two hours of the day. Last but not least get proper sleep. Use a fan to keep your room cool and wear cotton pajamas so your skin can breathe. Turn off phones and TV and put at least seven hours aside to rejuvenate your body. I hope everyone has a great summer! Joanne Augusto Owner Nutrition World V A N T A Z M A - C A R - C A R E . C O M

PUEBLO VIEJO

My latest culinary delight is difficult to describe! Stupendous, out of this solar system, comes close! Primo uno: Las margaritas eran deliciosas!!! Immediately, Claudia came to the table and made fresh guacamole at the table, which was divine, served with fresh homemade corn ships! (Only $7.50 for a huge bowl)! Next course was the “trio fajitas” (shrimp, chicken and beef ). This was exceptional and the portion was enough for at least 3 people! Everything was extremely fresh, hot and cooked to perfection! Of course it was served with all the extras (refried beans, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo). Next on the menu was the skirt steak tacos (carne asada), served with yellow rice and all the extras! They were superb, tender, juicy and also a huge portion!

by Nancy Bailes

The final touch was the desserts, homemade flan which was extremely well received and then the unique fried cheesecake (served with a dish of ice cream)! You can use your imagination as to how good that was!!! To top off the entire meal, Eduardo brought me a glass of sangria, which he did not know is one of my favorite delicacies!! Yum!!! The restaurant was extremely clean, beautifully decorated and there were also roving musicians during dinner! There is a full bar where you can sit and wait if you have ordered “take out.” The service was exceptional; Yeris, Dora and Claudia were extremely attentive and pleasant. The manager, Eduardo, was very visible and was more than accomadating! Gracias por tenerme como invitado!

Pueblo Viejo (6 locations) is open (11am-10pm) 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. This family has been in business on the Treasure Coast for over16 years! I highly recommend PV and be sure to bring your entire family, make sure you are hungry when you go!! 270 NW Peacock Blvd., Pt. St Lucie West • 772-807-5550 • Full Liquor Bar

Grace Packs... Because Love Provides Grace Packs began at Oak Hammock on October 7, 2011. During the 2011-2012 school year, 672 Grace Packs were given to allay student hunger. During the 2012-2013 school year, 1,344 Grace Packs were given. In the past two school years, with Grace Packs being provided, the incidents of students visiting the school clinic on Mondays complaining of headaches and stomach aches have dramatically diminished due to food being provided over the weekends. Grace Packs exists through school and local community support and engagement. The mission of Grace Packs is to provide weekly weekend food for students in need. The goal is to provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner foods at the end of each school week to students whose families may be food insecure. You as our community partner can make an impact!

A “Gracie” at Oak Hammock, Ms. Judi, hands out a Grace Pack.

D

For persons needing help, they can check with their children’s school to see if there is an established Grace Packs program within the school. Currently, Grace Packs is in eleven St Lucie County schools. For people who may want to get involved, they can contact Laura Klosterman, at 772-607-2596. http://gracepacks.weebly.com

id you know that many students do not want “We know that God is the Founder and we are the to go home from school because there is a lack co-founders. (Ms. Lisa and I both felt led to begin of food at home? Some students visit the school Grace Packs.)” Laura Klosterman clinic on Mondays complaining of stomachaches and headaches. These illnesses often are because the children have had little food over the weekend. Children continue to struggle with hunger on the Treasure Coast, according to a new study released by Feeding America. More than one in four, or 26.7 percent of children in St Lucie County are going hungry, according to the Child Food Insecurity 2013 study. The largest numbers of potentially hungry children on the Treasure Coast reside in St. Lucie County. “Food insecure” is defined as people who don’t know from where their next meal will come. Is Grace Packs a cause you would like to be a part of ? Would you consider partnering with us in this worthy cause?

What’s in a Song? Have you ever heard a song that immediately brought tears to your eyes? Music and lyrics bring you to a place; whether it is a place you have been before, or a place you want to go. Memories, lyrics, and messages contained within songs can bring sorrow, joy, peace, anger, remorse or regret. A song can lift or crush the heart, and is powerful enough to encourage or discourage a spirit. Martin Luther famously wrote, “Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.” Throughout time philosophers, politicians, psychologists and artists alike have marveled about the impact of music. If music is of such a large impact, either positive or negative, should we not take great care with what we spend time listening to, and what we allow our children to listen to? If you’ve been short on encouragement or inspiration lately, good music might be the right place to turn. Christian FM has the mission of providing hope, faith, and encouragement for your family. At Christian FM we have a 30-Day Challenge, where we challenge you to try listening to only Christian FM and other contemporary Christian music for 30 days, and see how it changes your life. Every day we hear from listeners who have taken this challenge and are amazed at the difference in their level of joy, hope, and peace. Why allow depression, anxiety, fear, and loneliness into your life through music, when you could be bringing encouragement and hope into your heart with the click of a button? Be encouraged, listen to 96.3 FM, or online at Christianfm.com.

According to the Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement, one-half of all American women work in low-paying jobs that don’t offer retirement benefits. Women retirees typically receive only one-half the average pension benefits of men. This means a large percentage of women will come up short when it comes time to retire. Since the average woman lives longer than the average man, failing to have enough funds to get through retirement may have even more severe consequences for a woman. So what’s a girl to do? Being aware of your needs for retirement is the first step. The second step is to get started on a savings plan, no matter how far away (or near) your retirement. If you are currently employed and your company offers a 401(k) plan, most investment professionals would encourage you to contribute as much as you can, especially if your company offers a match. As you receive salary increases, do your best to increase your contribution each year. The younger you are when you start, the better. However, if you’re already in your 30s, 40s, or even 50s, don’t let that discourage you from contributing, as you will need to commit even more to the plan in order to catch your retirement funds up to where they need to be. If your company doesn’t offer a 401(k) plan, consider opening an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). Your investment professional will be able to explain the options and which investments are best for you.
