abusive at times yet out of it all came joy. Yuri was given the opportunity to come to the states with a missionary family who would later adopt her and finally Yuri felt safe and secure. She graduated, went on to college and was well famed in the sport of soccer.

any of us have heard about the wonderful project; Operation Christmas Child and the organizations prominent founder; Franklin Graham. Here’s something you may not have heard. It was an honor to get an inside view of the impact a simple shoebox made on one young lady’s life. Yuri Lopez, from Honduras, shared her story at GRACE CHURCH in Port St Lucie this past month. Thank you pastor Ken Hagen for hosting.
Yuri experienced many challenges and heartache. There were times when she recalls running off to the foot of the mountains with her box. Sitting in sadness she would look at the picture and read the letter that was tucked inside. This gave Yuri Hope that someday God would answer her prayer of taking her far away from the village. Yuri endured a hostile home life that was

Today Yuri dedicates her time to giving back to those in need. She disciples kids and actively serves in her community where she resides, Tennessee. Close to her heart will always be; Samaritan’s Purse – Operation Christmas Child. Yuri referenced a scripture during her story and I believe she held on tight to this one; Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” I also had the privilege of spending some time with Paula Grossman, TC Area Coordinator for Operation Christmas Child. Paula is a resident of St Lucie County, married for 47 years and has two sons, three grandchildren and a
Miss Lopez, now a beautiful young lady was only 6 years old when she received her first Christmas Shoebox. As I listened to her passionately describe, recalling each item as if it were yesterday. I could tell that moment was embedded in Yuri’s heart. Little did she know that someday it would change her life drastically for the better. Her story was sad. She was an orphan at the age of two, living in an impoverished country, no parents, separated from her twin sister and was shuffled around to 14 different orphanages. Yuri’s child & teenage years were hard to hear about and it was difficult to keep a dry eye. Yet what I remember most about her story was her optimism and hope. It was apparent, the love that came out of her desperate times made me realize how important the simplest of things are and to give to those less fortunate.

wonderful dog. Her desire is to increase community volunteers and their involvement throughout the year. Paula has been a part of the area team for the past five years and works tirelessly for this cause. Recently she visited Uganda and witnessed the poorest of children living in the worst condition imaginable. They smiled and laughed as they opened the boxes. Beyond rewarding! Paula also shared a few specific memories of children who had received their box. One box was only full of socks, nothing else. At first Paula was concerned but watched our amazing God in action. The child who received this particular box was a burn victim and the doctor had stated the importance of clean socks every day. Nice reminder of a loving God who’s in control.
