Hello dear readers and Happy Holidays,
I am ready to kick off the Florida winter to some low humidity and cooler temperatures, how about you? Bring on the cowgirl boot weather! I’m pretty sure that some snowbirds might be in town… a little more traffic…Welcome back. As we move into the holiday season my thoughts have been focused on what giving really means. I decided to do a little reading on the gift and the giver. He was just a young man when he was drafted into the Army Air Force. Only a few months later, having completed his training as a bombardier, the 22 year old was spending Christmas Eve of 1943 (and his first night overseas) with his B17 Flying Fortress crew of 10 and a second crew of 10 in a Quonset hut at a British “bed base.” The other crew went out on a mission that night – and never returned. No trace was ever found. Sal Palazzolo, now 92 and a Port St. Lucie resident, found out in a rush that War is REAL. He went on to fly 17 missions, bombing mostly Berlin and Cologne before he returned stateside. The Japanese surrendered and WWII, at long last, was over. A veteran is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to ‘My Government’ for any amount, up to and including their life. Unknown

Earlier this year, Sal joined 98 other WWII veterans who, through Southeast Florida Honor Flight (a 501(c)(3) organization) journeyed to Washington, D.C. to visit the war memorials and be honored for their service to our country. The trip is free to the veterans. Each vet is assigned a Guardian. Sal’s was wounded Marine vet and trained EMT, Andrew Laney. Sal could not have made the trip without him and is grateful for his service and dedication. Andrew, and all Guardians, not only donate their time but pay for their own flights. It was a full day for the veterans, as they were bussed from Stuart to West Palm Beach, flown on a US Air charter jet to Washington, greeted with red, white and blue cascades of water from the DC fire department, bussed to the Iwo Jima monument, Arlington National Cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (which was a very emotional moment for Sal) and finally the World War II Memorial. Pictures don’t do it justice, Sal reports. Their departure from Dulles was made special by a “mob” in 1940’s outfits and an 8-piece band playing songs from the era. Finally back in Florida, a bagpiper and drummer led them off the plane to crowds of cheering Scouts, school children, friends and family. A
s the Community Benefit Coordinator for Martin Health System, Rachel Terlizzi wears many hats, among them scheduling speakers, experts in their fields to talk to your group on health topics. If you would like a speaker who is an expert in goal setting, hard work, determination, dedication, and perseverance, then ask for Rachel herself ! Rachel’s see it through win or lose, meet your goal beginning to end philosophy is contagious and educational. Last summer Rachel went on the journey of a lifetime that changed her life and helped change the lives of many in her community. In June Rachel found out that she was selected as one of the *Stars* for Dancing with Martin Stars and, to her surprise, her dance was the Argentine Tango! “I love to laugh and smile so I couldn’t imagine doing a serious, dramatic Latin dance. I thought, what have I gotten myself into?!!!” She describes herself as being musically inclined, was in band, likes to dance, but having no formal training in ballroom dancing. “I was completely out of my comfort zone but I made my mind up that I was going to live the Argentine Tango.” This meant dedicating hours to private and group lessons and ballroom dance nights. Dancing with Martin Stars is the premier fundraiser annually for Martin County Healthy Start Coalition. Without it Healthy Start would not be able to offer their free programs such as ultrasounds, prenatal care, and diaper pantry. Each *Star* sets a goal for how much money they will raise for the event. Rachel set her goal at $5,000 to $10,000, hoping that many people would be able to help with small donations, which they did within the first month!
relax, right? No, Rachel didn’t stop – she $15,000, and reached that by the end of she’ll relax and just practice her dance, a higher goal - $20,000!
“The stretch from $15,000 to $20,000 was hard.” Born out of desperation for more creative ideas she and fellow star Tara Zweben had a special “Swango” event (Swing/Tango) and a Diaper Pantry fundraiser where she sent letters home to her son’s preschool families asking for sponsors for cases of diapers – at $1.80 a case a $20.00 bill buys 11 cases. They spiced up the competition between classrooms with an incentive – a pajama party. Businesses also got involved by word of mouth and sponsored hundreds of cases. Just two days before the event she found herself $800 short of her goal and the next night at dress rehearsal star Kenan Siegel had moved into first place. The night of the event, imagine her overwhelming surprise when she was announced as top fundraiser bringing in $25,538.40! “I had no idea, I was completely in shock!” Her advice? “Stay focused and keep at it!

Even if you don’t need help or want to use Healthy Start services, the questionnaire assists in obtaining the information and funding necessary to improve the health care system for ALL mothers and babies in Florida.

Putting the “Happy” back into the Holidays
by Joanne Augusto Owner of Nutrition World Like many of us I am so tired of hearing about all the things I shouldn’t consume during the holiday season. Some of the foods that we have been warned about remind me of some of my most cherished moments in life. I believe if we add some healthy habits into our holiday season we can look at our New Year with more gratitude and less guilt.
1. Consume 10 ounces of water each hour you are celebrating. This trick keeps you full, hydrated and keeps your bowels moving. I like putting sparkling water in a wine glass with a wedge of lemon.

3. Do not skip meals on party day. Eat on your normal schedule. Going to a party starving can be disastrous. I love having a protein shake before so I can spend time talking first and not charge the buffet table.

2. Stand up while at a party so you burn more calories, use your muscles and are not sitting in front of the food. You will be surprised how much better your conversations will be while not being focused on food.
4. Bring a to go container, many hosts would love for you to take food home but do not have containers handy. If you know you have left overs to look forward to you will be less likely to over indulge. 5. Find out which neighborhoods have holiday decorations. Park close by and take a walk with friends. Just think if you did a quick ten-minute walk after your meal you would feel better for dessert. 6. Bring a unique dish, gift or cocktail that everyone keeps asking you about. This will keep you talking so you’re forced to eat slower.
Okay here comes the emotional tips, sometimes tougher to do but the rewards are worth it! 7. Begin a gratitude journal. Each day just write one thing down that you’re grateful or thankful for. On difficult days write down in the morning something you would like to happen. Written words have an amazing way of bringing positive changes to your life.
8. Take a holiday newsbreak. This includes social media. Only allow yourself to hear or see uplifting or funny stories for the holidays. Don’t worry if something life threatening is going to happen you will know! 9. Practice smiling in the mirror and telling yourself “I am amazing!” or any other positive adjective. This step may be difficult at first but it does get easier.
10. Forgive!!!! Yourself…others, we are all on this journey, making many mistakes along the way. Just know each moment you can make the choice to “Live the Life you Love!”

The crust was simply the best; thin, crispy and hot! Cosi delizioso! Along with the pizza we had a fresh, mixed green salad (arugula, black olives, tomatoes, cucumbers) with choice of dressing. I had balsamic vinaigrette. Next came the Margherita pizza, with homemade mozzarella, garlic, fresh tomatoes and fresh basil! To die for, without a doubt! Our next culinary treat was garlic knot meatball sliders!! I have never had anything like them. The meatballs were a replica of those my mother made! So to me, that means the absolute best!! The final “peace de resistance” was chicken Marsala, made with the chef ’s own special sauce. Unique, tasty and totally savory! The dining room is absolutely lovely! Perfect for an intimate dinner for 2 or it can house a large party for a baby shower, bridal party, holiday get together or any type of gathering. Along with the tastiest, lightest, most delicious bagels, owner Joe Stellato also makes his own foccacia bread. The day I was there one of his specials was turkey, lettuce, tomato, garlic/onion powder on fresh bread. The sandwich was so huge; a grown man eating it said he was so full he could barely move!! Another special was a grilled chicken pesto sandwich, with mozzarella, roasted red peppers pannini style! So good!! His Italian combo is definitely one of his best sellers along with his Philly steak, loaded with goodness! There are also several variations of salads. I had macaroni salad made with ziti, black olives, pesto, red onions and garlic, of course! His ace in the hole is his homemade peanut butter pie (made into small tarts). I dare you to eat just one! It was so mouth-watering good, you have to buy more to take home! He uses all Boar’s Head meats and cheeses; everything is fresh, neat and clean. Fresh coffee is available, real milk and half and half are kept in the refrigerator (another rarity). He makes between 6-8 different flavors of cream cheese each day and sells fresh lox as well. Joe also provides a full mobile kitchen catering trailer for events and feasts. I am sure you have seen him all over St. Lucie and Martin County. VISTA GRILLE All I can say is wow!! Without a doubt, Vista Grille is the best kept secret on the Treasure Coast! It is a “perfect ten,” a rare find, and a true gem all rolled into one! Vista Grille is in a class of its own! The food (Contemporary/Mediterranean/Greek) is “made to order,” fresh, and a unique blend of savory tastes! My petite lamb chops (delicately seasoned, cooked to perfection and priced at only $13.95) were the best I have ever tasted! My publisher opted for the Mediterranean stuffed chicken breast (spinach, sun dried tomatoes, feta cheese, also priced at $13.95) and it was mouth-watering, melt in your mouth delicious! We both had salads, balsamic vinegarette, and the Greek dressing, which was a unique blend with a delicate lemon flavor. Choice of vegetable and potatoes/rice are included. We each sampled desserts, which were equally scrumptous – bread pudding and key lime pie, yummy!! Entrees are cooked to order – spanakopita, dolmades, moussaka all home made with love! There is something for everyone, “lite delights” hummus quesadillas, turkey burgers, etc., for those delicate palates. Some of the specials on Friday were prime rib, panko crusted shrimp, salmon (grilled or blackened), moussaka (Greek lasagna), and Mediterranean stuffed chicken. Don’t dismiss the veal, eggplant and shrimp parmigian! Beer, wine and mimosa’s are also served. The restaurant is clean, service was exemplary, food was remarkable and the prices are totally within your budget! It is beautifully appointed, well lit, and has a very soothing and calming atmosphere. Outdoor dining is also available. I can honestly report that this was the very best meal I have had since moving to Port St. Lucie!! Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily. Owners Susan Schill and George Tsikoudis are gracious, available and very good at what they do. Susan is not only an owner, but also a PSL teacher and full time mom! From the Inside Out Inflammaging

I am asked the same question over and over…how can I look younger? Aging is a cumulative effect of chronic inflammation. The constant exposure to stress, poor diet, alcohol, cigarettes, and lack of exercise and sleep wears down the body’s natural defenses. University of Bologna professor, Claudio Fraceschi, PhD, coined this process, called “Inflammaging”. Many of us are familiar with the visible signs of inflammation, redness of the skin, swelling, irritation and discomfort but it is the invisible inflammation that dwells deep within our bodies that slowly builds over years and years of exposure to irritants that is the true enemy. This is the start of aging as well as many serious diseases today. In the words of founding father, Benjamin Franklin, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. What you eat and how your body absorbs it is one of the most important aspects of maintaining proper health. We have approximately 25 feet of intestine running through our body absorbing and filtering everything we consume. Think of the amount of irritation it would take to inflame 25 feet... Yet many of us walk around with chronic digestive issues that eventually wear our body’s immune system down very quickly and cause that inflammation to spread to other areas like the skin and joints causing rashes, acne, pain and discomfort. People want a quick fix. The simple solution is to SIMPLIFY and PURIFY your diet. The biggest culprits of digestive inflammation are processed foods, sugars, gluten and dairy. Walk into the grocery store and try to find the “real” food. It is the food that exists on the perimeter of the store. The center isles are full of “food products” not real food. Ask yourself 3 questions before eating anything. If you can answer yes to any of the questions then you can eat it. Question 1: “Is this food NATURAL?” In this instance “Natural” means did it come from a real source and is it in an unprocessed state. Keeping your food close to its natural state is very important. Mass produced food products are designed to make you over consume. Food manufacturers make no profits off of you eating one cookie. Foods consumed in their natural state are hard to over consume. You could easily eat the 6 potatoes it takes to make that bag of potato chips in one sitting. Right? This is how processing food makes it frighteningly easy to over eat.

Question 2: “Is this food Nutritious?” After all food is fuel. Food is designed to give your body the energy it needs to function. Emotional eating is used many times to “ease stress”. This is an illusion. Comfort and pamper yourself with habits that lift you up. Take a walk on the beach, get a massage, visit a friend... Don’t EAT. Eat because you are hungry. PERIOD.

Finally Question 3: “Is this food Special?” We all have times when we want something that we know doesn’t fit into the Natural or Nutritious category. If you are tempted to eat decadent, rich foods ask yourself, if they are “special”. Did your grandmother bake your favorite ginger snap cookies or lasagna made from scratch, prepared with thought and love for you? If the answer to that is “yes” then by all means have some and enjoy it guilt free. You are more likely to have a slice of homemade cheesecake and be satisfied than if you chose to eat an entire store bought cheesecake. Eat a small portion of what you want and be done.
