eel the breeze? All I can hear in my head is the song, “Walking on Sunshine.” Totally ready for Fall! It was so brutally hot this summer. I couldn’t wait to get out of town for a few weeks to beat the heat. My trip took me to Long Island, NYC, Mahopac, Maine and a few places in between. I had family reunions, visited my hometown and reconnected with my high school bestie. New memories and friends were made. It was wonderful. All in all, I received a new dose of gratitude for my home and my own bed. Best of all, I came home to this bundle of joy (photo), my grandson Wyatt. He has the spotlight with me this issue! How is it they get so big so fast?! Olivia, my granddaughter, turns four on Veteran’s Day! Shortly after my return, Hurricane Dorian got everyone’s attention. It was days of preparation,

waiting and then returning to normal for everyone here. Sadly this is not the case for the Bahamas. Many caring people from all over are helping in all kinds of ways. I learned of Operation 300 from the news app that I downloaded prior to the hurricane. In this issue we share what and who they are. Find out about the relief they are providing in the Bahamas and how you can help. As most know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I am happy to have the acquaintance of Judy Perkins and dear friend Melissa McClelland who are both breast cancer survivors. They have both been gracious enough to tell their story. Thank you ladies! It will start to get very busy around here with the snowbirds arriving and the holidays coming. The Events Calendar is full. Check it out to plan ahead. What is near and dear to my heart, our brave service men and women that serve and sacrifice, Happy Veteran’s Day. “And out of them shall proceed thanksgiving and the voice of them that make merry: and I will multiply them, and they shall not be few; I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small.” 2 Corinthians 4:15 No matter what you do, find something to give thanks for! Thank you to all who participate in publishing Better Living & Marketplace! I am grateful to you and our faithful readers. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! God bless,

holistic health

Arthritis I f this disease hasn’t affected you or a loved one yet, you’re one of the lucky ones.

Unfortunately Arthritis has affected more then 350 million people worldwide, nearly 40 million people in the United States alone. The sad part is that over a quarter million of that number are children. There are two types of Arthritis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

FOR MORE SAVINGS, SEE OUR COUPON ON PAGE 16

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones wears down over time. Although osteoarthritis can damage any joint, the disorder most commonly affects joints in your hands, knees, hips and spine. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that can affect more than just your joints. In some people, the condition can damage a wide variety of body systems, including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart and blood vessels. An autoimmune disorder, rheumatoid arthritis occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks your own body’s tissues. Unlike the wear-and-tear damage of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis affects the lining of your joints. Arthritis, like all inflammatory conditions of the human body, can be helped by following a non-inflammatory lifestyle. Unfortunately there is no magic pill, (no matter what you read on social media!) or medical miracle for this disease. I had the privilege of helping a friend with his rheumatoid arthritis and after a challenging year of changing almost every habit he had all his symptoms were reversed. His wife who had anxiety, anemia and daily headaches was also free of her ailments.

OPERATION 300

All Gave Some–Some Gave All

S

tarted in September 2012 by Tara Vaughn Baldwin, in honor of her brother SOC Aaron Vaughn (SEAL). The organization chose to honor Special Operations Chief Vaughn by giving his kids, and other children who have suffered such tremendous loss, the opportunity to spend a little time living like Aaron: full of abandon, pure joy, and utter hilarity...even if only for a weekend at a time. The support of the community in building this dream has been surreal. They took what seemed impossible and made it possible. Their hearts are full of love, honor, and respect for not only Aaron, but for all of those like him, who gave their tomorrows for our todays. Operation 300 couldn’t do what they do without the support of donors and partners! Operation 300 covers all expenses for camps including travel, food, activities and lodging for children of the fallen and their mothers. This year alone, at least 7 camps will be hosted to benefit almost 300 children. Donations make this possible. The organization is currently accepting applications for children ages 6-18, who have lost their father in one of the following ways: KIA, Killed in Training or Service-Related Death. All other applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. GET INVOLVED Volunteers play a vital part in the success of our mission. We are looking not only for those who are willing to come and work, but also those who would see themselves as a positive role model and mentor to the children who attend our camps. We hope that our mentors will build long-lasting relationships with our children and invest more than just their time. Please visit www.op300.org and do whatever you can to help honor the sacrifice of the fallen.

A Breast Cancer

P

ort St. Lucie resident, Judy Perkins, was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer in August 2013. After becoming metastatic, she had more than a dozen standard treatments that failed her. Then, she discovered a clinical trial at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The trial, “Immunotherapy Using Tumor Infiltrating Lymphocytes for Patients with Metastatic Cancer”, appears to have cured her metastatic breast cancer, which is typically considered to be incurable. The theory behind this treatment is that part of a patient’s immune system may still be capable of fighting the cancer. Tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) are white blood cells that have penetrated the tumor and recognize the mutations in the cancer. However, the cancer is able to send signals that keep the TIL from multiplying and the immune system from attacking. In August 2015, to develop Judy’s treatment, one of her tumors was surgically

removed. The tumor was cut into 24 pieces and the TIL were watched to see if any of them would recognize her cancer. In four of the 24 pieces, activity was seen. Subsequently, the active TIL from these four tumor pieces were expanded into an army of about 80 billion T-cells focused on killing her cancer. Ms. Perkins received this “selective TIL treatment” in December 2015. By May 2016, all of her tumors had “melted away”. Dr. Steve Rosenberg, the Chief of Surgery at the NCI, created this technology and published the results of the trial in the prestigious science journal, “Nature”, in June 2018.

National Diabetes Awareness Month

N

ovember is national diabetes month. Chances are you probably know someone with the disease. 30 million Americans are affected in 2019 and a rising trend that at the current rate estimates 1 in 4 Americans will be diagnosed by 2050. The two most commonly known types are type 1 and type 2 and are categorized by age of onset NOT by treatments. Type 1 occurs in adolescence and is an autoimmune process that destroys the cells that produce insulin. The only treatment is insulin. Type 2 is adult onset and is a decline in the production or the inability to use available insulin. Treatments include diet and exercise, oral medications, newer injectable medication to increase insulin production and insulin injections. Taking insulin with adult onset does not make that person now a type 1. Other forms of diabetes can occur during pregnancy or secondary to certain medications. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas to help our bodies absorb “sugar a.k.a. glucose for energy/cell function. Excess glucose is stored as fat for future needs. When the body is having trouble processing glucose it stays

in the blood...hence the term high blood sugar. Over time this puts too much pressure on the blood vessels causing damage. Naturally the most delicate vessels will be damaged first, which are in the eyes, the kidneys and the feet. A dilated eye exam is a non-invasive way for the doctor to examine these vessels that enter the eye. The doctor can determine if there are no problems or may grade some damage as mild, moderate or severe. A report is then sent to the pri-

My Cancer Saved My Life, and I Found My Way Home. BY MELISSA MCCLELLAND

I

n February 2011 I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 48. My father passed away a few months later from esophageal cancer. It was like cancer was surrounding me suffocating me emotionally, physically and spiritually, and I had two choices accept it head on or run like I had done my entire life. With the support of loved ones I stepped into a program of change. I started to contemplate my previous life and realized I was a workaholic and so much more. I never took time for me and I never took the time to look up at the sky or just breathe. My surgery took place at Martin Memorial Hospital in Stuart, Florida. My brilliant surgeon Dr. Mark Beatty who also performed my mother’s bilateral mastectomy 6 years prior walked me through each step and answered all my questions in gentle caring way. To this day I thank and praise him and the entire staff at this amazing hospital. After my recovery from a bilateral mastectomy I started taking and learning about yoga and fell in love. My diet changed as well and I started to slow down and appreciate life on a daily basis. I was so blessed with beautiful family and friends who continued to show me I was enough. My world was becoming settled down and my health was improving with each breath. My yoga practice continued to inspire me and in 2012 with the love and support of my precious mother we opened Down To Earth Yoga Studio together. You see I truly was never happy – running from my emotions, hiding and masking who I really was. Yoga taught me to honor myself without force but with love. In time it became how I started to think and live. The Mind, Body and Spirit link started to connect with me in my life on and off the mat. Today with all my heart I truly feel that cancer saved my life and allowed me to find Who I am, a beautiful spiritual cancer survivor, breathing and helping others walk the path of love and understanding. I love my life and live each day as if it is my last. I know today that cancer does not define me. The light in me honors and respects the light in you a respect bow soul to soul as one! Namaste

it back and recline, breathe in the dry salt air and rest for 45 minutes in the most delightful room in St. Lucie County. Salt therapy, also called halotherapy, is a therapeutic and 100% natural, drug-free and non-invasive treatment. Salt therapy is a method of inhaling pure, dry, micronized salt air particles. These particles are inhaled into the sinuses and the lungs, absorbing bacteria and pollutants and providing an anti-inflammatory and cleansing effect. This process supports and strengthens the body’s immune system by eliminating toxins and allergens that are trapped within the mucus lining of the respiratory system. Salt therapy also has amazing benefits for skin. If you are looking for relief from allergies, asthma, sinusitis, COPD, cystic fibrosis, skin issues, stress and more, call and book your 45 minute session now. It will be sure to leave you breathing easy! – Laura

Pastor Mike’s Corner

Two Important Truths

N

o one has everything figured out all the time. Not you. Not me. There will always be times and situations of uncertainty --- whether in the areas of health, finances, or relationships. And in those unavoidable, unresolved spaces of life, all you and I can do is have hope. And for that hope, we can always rely on God’s word. I want to share some of the many promises of hope from God’s word. One of the greatest promises of Scripture is found in Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,’ says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” (NLT) You may know this promise from God in your head, but that doesn’t mean you always feel it in your heart. Sometimes, your hope is shattered when a setback comes your way. Setbacks are part of life. We all experience them, and we can’t avoid them. You lose a job. A relationship ends. Your health fails. So when a setback does happen---and it will---it’s common to feel anxious, fearful or angry. But that doesn’t mean you have to stay stuck there. You can move past the setback, and the emotions that come with it, to a place of hope. ow? Through these two important truths…. Remember how much God loves you. Remember that God’s plan is good. So what do these two truths have in common? They both require you to choose faith over fear. When you’re experiencing a setback, trust that God loves you and has a plan for you. It’s not easy, but it’s the only path forward. We are obligated to encourage people to choose faith over fear by sharing the certain hope of Jesus Christ---and for me it was life changing when someone lead me to Jesus through their hope strength and experiences. Let’s not keep our faith and hope in Jesus a secret. God Bless, Pastor Mike
