Fall is finally in the air in Florida
BY DR. LYNNE ERBE

Cooler temperatures and sparkling sunny days bring trusted sweaters, scarves and boots out of hibernation. Adding a new pair of eyeglasses is also a stylish way to freshen things up! Current fall trends in eyewear continue to highlight frames in rectangular, horn-rimmed and cat eye shapes in warm autumn hues of purple, red and tortoise shell. Gold-rimmed metal is also making a comeback. Trendy clear and neutral styles offer versatility to any outfit. But don’t forget to think pink! In honor of breast cancer awareness month in October, we offer Ellen Tracey readers and sunglasses. A $10.00 donation will be made to the foundation with purchase.

Letter from P U B L I S H E R
Fun times with my sister & brother.
Hello dear readers, I open this issue’s commentary with continued prayers going out to those affected with devastation this timultuous hurricane season. For those of us who are more fortunate, remember, “It is more blessed to give than receive.” Acts 20:25. Even the smallest things, like a kind word can go a long way. This is it! The boots are waiting to rock & roll and my sneakers are jumping for joy! Why? It’s the anticipation of breathing the cooler air. There is just something about it that puts pep in my step and a glide in my stride. Besides, the hurricane season is ending, my snowbird friends are
returning and the holidays are coming. October is breast cancer awareness month. We have a strong community that pulls together giving and receiving help. Two noteworthy organizations in St. Lucie: Friend in Pink: www.FriendsinPink.net and Windsor Community Angels: www. facebook.com/pg/windsorcommunityangels It is always important to me to acknowledge our Veterans. What better time than Veteran’s Day? As for me, I stand for the National Anthem, for we are free because of the

“Brave”! In this issue read about the Rotary Club’s event, Jack Daniel’s A Steak & Whiskey Affair benefiting two veteran’s organizations. Thank you to all Veterans. May God bless & keep you! Having the whole family together does not happen often for me. It always brings lots of laughs and love. Priceless! I am looking forward to turkey day. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone In joyful gratitude,
If you are involved in a community program that is making a positive difference, please contact me @ Valerie@blmmag.com. You just might be the next story.

Conveniently located just a block off US 1 at Rio Mar (North of Prima Vista), Bella Roma is THE REAL DEAL. Since 1980 the Brancaccio family has been serving up homemade delights infused with the heart and soul of their Italian Grandma Anna. As you walk in you’ll be greeted by friendly faces. Bella Roma is famous for their pizza (and they deliver) but one and all can be satisfied with their full menu: Appetizers including Rice Balls Arancini, Soups, Salads, Subs, Calzone, Stromboli and Dinners served with Salad and Garlic Bread. Their Grilled Chicken Salad was a large platter of fresh greens, tomatoes, olives topped with perfectly seasoned grilled chicken breast. The veal parmesan platter was large enough to feed two. There were two large medallions in a light crisp breading topped with sweet and tangy marinara. The side of ziti was perfectly cooked then topped with the same delightful sauce. (Their sauce is made special daily). After placing your order the incredible showcase will capture your attention. Olives and homemade salads and soups are available for take-home along with fresh homemade bread

(they also bake for a lot of other establishments in our area). Also available for takehome are fresh pastas from Mimi’s Ravioli of Hollywood, Florida. Finally, try to pick just one from their selection of beautiful cakes (most popular is the 7-layer) and pastries, made fresh daily. Bella Roma is known as The Home of the Lobster Tail so you can’t go wrong with flaky layers of sweet, airy goodness with a semi-sweet creamy filling all presented in the unique shape of a lobster tail - a fun treat that will remind you of the fine pastries shops of northern Italy or southern New York. As the holidays approach call Bella Roma for your Homemade Pumpkin Pies and Trays of Italian Butter Cookies (2 to 5 pounds) and contact them for catering - your next party will be delicious and worry-free! The family at Bella Roma takes pride in the quality of their food and service. They care about what you think and will do everything possible to ensure that the customer is happy and satisfied. 475 Rio Mar Drive • Pt. Saint Lucie, FL 34984 (772) 343-7406

What do you get when you add thousands of veterans, two veteran organizations and one Rotary Club with a heart? The answer is an event designed for those that love steak, whiskey, cigars and supporting local vets. The Port St. Lucie Sunset Rotary Club will present An Evening with Jack Daniels – a Steak and Whiskey Affair on November 1 at 6:00 p.m. The evening will include a pairing of special Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskeys alongside a five-course menu created for the event by the culinary team at Sam Snead’s Oak Fired Grill & Tavern. Whiskeys will include Gentlemen’s
Jack, Jack Daniels Single Barrel, Jack Daniels Single Barrel Barrel Proof and Jack Daniels Rye, the first Jack Daniels release in over 100 years. In addition to the tasting and dinner, guests will be able to pre-order a personalized engraved bottle of Jack Daniel’s. Handrolled cigars will be offered during the evening; a smoking area will be provided on the restaurant patio. A signature Gentlemen Jack drink, the Sunset Sling, will be available for purchase. Tickets are $100 per person, and there is limited seating available. “This event will be a treat for anyone that enjoys a superb steak dinner with

whiskey and cigars,” said Rotary Club President Jeannette Weiss. “A Jack Daniels ambassador will be on hand to talk about the various whiskeys being offered and to offer tasting tips. We at the Port St. Lucie Sunset Rotary Club are pleased to host an event that will benefit two wonderful veteran’s organizations.” The Club chose United Veterans of St. Lucie County and Honor Flight. “In fact,” said Weiss, “the hardest part was choosing which organizations to donate the proceeds to. There are so many worthy organizations in our community.”

United Veterans of St. Lucie County United Veterans of St. Lucie County raises money through events and grants to purchase handicapped vehicles to transport local veterans to medical services. The organization was founded in the early 1990’s by US Navy veteran Jerry Frost. Frost began transporting veterans to their medical appointments at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center, using his own private vehicle. Eventually, Frost and some other supporters approached the St. Lucie County Administrator for help. The County donated a vehicle for their use. In 2011, the United Veterans of St. Lucie County, Inc. (UVSLCINC) became a 501c(3) not-for-profit organization. Since then, the organization has applied for federal grants and hosted events to purchase additional vehicles. They have purchased vans as well as handicapped
14
equipped buses to accommodate the needs of county veterans with disabilities, such as wheelchairs, walkers, and veterans with K-9s. United Veterans also helped the local Gold Star Mothers build a local memorial in Port St. Lucie.
Southeast Florida Honor Flight, Inc. United Veterans of St. Lucie County, Inc. works with over 30 dedicated military member organizations working to support and care for the veterans of St. Lucie County. One of those organizations is Southeast Florida Honor Flight. According to Honor Flights website, the Honor Flight Network program was conceived by Earl Morse, a physician assistant and Retired Air Force Captain, who wanted to honor the veterans he had taken care of for the past 27 years. In May of 2004, the World War II Memorial was finally completed and dedicated
in Washington, D.C. and quickly became the topic of discussion among Morse’s World War II veteran patients. Morse repeatedly asked his veteran patients if they would ever travel out to visit THEIR memorial. Most felt that somehow, they would make it to D.C., perhaps with a family member or friend. Eventually, it became apparent that most of the veterans did not have the resources to be able to make the trip. That’s when Morse decided to do something. The inaugural Honor Flight took place in May of 2005 in Springfield, Ohio when 6 small planes flew twelve World War II veterans on a visit to the memorial in Washington, DC. After that trip, an ever-expanding waiting list of veterans led a transition to commercial airline carriers. By the end of the first year, Honor Flight had transported 137 World War II veterans to their memorial. Partnering with
BETTER LIVING & MARKETPLACE MAGAZINE • BLMMAG.COM
Honor Air in Hendersonville, North Carolina, "Honor Flight Network." was formed. Since then, thousands and thousands of veterans, including veterans of Korea and Viet Nam and their escorts, have made the emotional trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the World War II and other Memorials. Commercial aircraft are now used so that as many veterans can be accommodated as possible each trip. There are 2 stipulations that have always been in place: the veterans pay nothing, and they must be escorted by volunteers. Because of the age of the WWII veterans, time is of the essence to get as many veterans to the memorial as possible. Southeast Florida Honor Flight, a 100% volunteer organization formed in 2008, is one of the many hubs dedicated to honoring WWII Veterans by flying them to Washington, DC to visit their memorial at absolutely no cost to the veteran. The service area includes Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, Okeechobee, and Palm Beach counties. Veterans, including disabled vets, are welcome and are provided
Larry Breault with food pantry donations
with complimentary wheelchairs, oxygen and medical staff. The trip includes bus transportation to and from the airports, meals, t-shirts, and any other amenities that are required to travel comfortably. Every trip is escorted by a team of welltrained volunteers and guardians. The
volunteers and guardians pay their own way ensuring that 100% of the proceeds go to the mission.
Community Support Needed Weiss hopes this is just the beginning of what will be an annual event. “Both of these organizations provide an important service to veterans in our community. Port St. Lucie Sunset Rotary Club members are honored to be able to provide financial support. We hope this event is wildly successful and that it becomes an annual event to help support these missions. We are asking the community to come out and support this event, and in the end, support our local veterans.” Sponsors for the evening include Hilton Garden Inn PGA Village, Sam Snead’s Oak Fired Grille and Tavern, Better Living & Marketplace, Breakthrough Beverages and Cigar Goose. Sam Snead’s Tavern is located at the Hilton Garden Inn PGA Village, 8540 Commerce Centre Drive, Port St Lucie.

As the cool breeze blows the beautiful autumn leaves off the trees, we dream of savory squash soup, baked beets and homemade apple pie. Okay I know its 92 degrees here but a girl can dream! We are so blessed with the availability of seasonal produce from the entire country. So turn down your AC and start cooking.
Autumn Recipes ROASTED SQUASH SOUP
Ingredients There are far too many fall veggies to mention, but my favorite fall veggies are squash, beets, and brussel sprouts. Even though we can obtain these vegetables anytime I highly suggest seeking out Organic versions that are free from pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. Here are a couple of my favorite recipes:
All these amazing fall produce items are not just colorful but extremely nutritious. It is important to get a variety of vegetables in your diet, especially in different colors.

Meanwhile, in a large pot over medium heat, melt butter and remaining tablespoon olive oil. Add onion, celery, and carrot and cook until softened, 7 to 10 minutes. Season generously with salt, pepper, and thyme. Add roasted squash and potatoes and pour over chicken broth. Simmer 10 minutes, then using an immersion blender, blend soup until creamy. (Alternately, carefully transfer batches of the hot soup to a blender.) Serve garnished with thyme. (continued on the next page)

magine getting up early one brisk Saturday morning–the promise of Christmas break quickly approaching – meeting at the park just close enough to hear the crashing waves from the beach, wrapping your hands around your favorite hot beverage of choice, maybe even enjoying a bagel and cream cheese. The scene you are picturing is one hundreds of locals experience at Christian FM’s Jingle Bell Jog 5K. Whether you’re there to run, cheer or chat with friends, the morning passes way too quickly. But as they say, time flies when you’re having fun. The

Jingle Bell Jog is no different... it’s just a different kind of race. It’s one that’s built on the joys of fun and family. Along with the usual favorite holiday traditions, Treasure Coast families have taken on a new one. After only a couple of years, Christian FM’s Jingle Bell Jog 5K is quickly becoming an institution. You see it is part of our mission at Christian FM to foster faith hope and family, offering wholesome, safe places of fellowship and encouragement. We believe you can never give too much- to your family or to your community.
That’s why we welcome all Treasure Coast families to join us this holiday season for the Jingle Bell Jog, December 16 at South Beach Park in Vero Beach. It’s only $25 for adults to register online and $10 for kids twelve and under. And the first 100 registrants will take away a special holiday t-shirt. Visit Christianfm.com for more information, and register for this fun, jingle-filled Christmas event!

While interest rates were increased twice this year by the Federal Reserve, and we are poised for a third rate hike, banks seem to be ignoring the rate hikes and the interest rate on a 30 year fixed rate mortgage has gone down.
Lower rates mean higher buying power and higher prices for sellers. Inventory for existing homes for sale is still tight in most markets and millennials are starting to enter the market as first time homebuyers while confidence in the employment sector increases. As your neighborhood real estate expert I appreciate the opportunity to service all your real estate needs. Please call me today for a free consultation.

Every day, hunger follows kids around at school, on the playground and wherever they may go.
T
The mission and joy of Grace Packs Inc. is to provide weekly weekend food for students who lack an ample food supply, relieving the burden many of these children endure by being hungry.
Did you know?
• On the Treasure Coast, 23.3% of our children are food insecure; this translates to 28,280 kids not knowing from where their next meal will come.
• In St. Lucie County, 23.5% of children are considered food insecure. These 14,000 children represent the largest number of children in need on the Treasure Coast. Our goal is to furnish breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack items at the end of each school week to students who may be suffering from food insecurity.
We are welcoming volunteers on Tuesdays and Wednesdays that would like to support our hungry children by packing and Research is based on "Map The Meal Gap 2017: Food Insecurity and Child Food Insecurity estimates at the County Level," supported by the Howard G. Things don’t always work out the way we want them to, or the way we think they will. Sometimes we don’t even see it coming. We get hit with some form of pain out of nowhere leaving us feeling desperate and helpless. That’s the way life is. We have storms in our lives. Still, it makes us wonder how God can let these things happen to us. How God can just stand by and watch us suffer? Where is God when it really hurts? Maybe God is actually closer to us than we think. Maybe it’s when we’re in these situations, where everything seems to be falling apart, that God gets an opportunity to remind us of how much he really loves us.
B A G E L B R O T H E R S O F N Y. C O M
Most of the storms in my life were caused by some bad decision I made, or by somebody else, or a combination of both. God didn’t create the storm in my life, but he allowed it to happen. It is in the storms of my life I can cry out to God for help. To many times we try to weather the storms by ourselves, and God is waiting for us to cry out to him. A lot of us have done things in our lives that we’re ashamed of. Some are small things, and some of us have really big and devastating things. Some of us even have things that people close to us don’t know about. Personal junk that we keep to ourselves so we don’t have to deal with it. Because we don’t know how to deal with it, do we? We’re afraid that if we try it’s just going to make everything worse. But no matter how big our junk is, no matter how much what we’ve done has impacted the way other people feel about us or how we feel about ourselves, it hasn’t changed how God feels about us. God loves us, he always has and always will, and there’s nothing we can do to change that.
