Hello dear readers,

hat sweet memories I have of this time of year! Can you imagine a Thanksgiving dinner with a large Italian family?! I don’t even know how we ever ate all that food! Two separate seven course meals! We had the full Italian dinner with all the holiday specials, and the turkey dinner with all ethnic specialties. What was priceless was having the whole family together, and it was extra-large. Seven sets of aunts and uncles on one side of the family and eight sets of aunts and uncles on the other side, which of course produced many cousins. I do miss those days and my loved ones, including my mom and dad who live with Jesus now.

This year more memory makers will happen. I have been holding my tongue but now I am so excited to share that I will be a grandma for the first time this November! That will be # 1 on my list of thanks to God on Thanksgiving. I can’t wait to share more with you in the months to come. Happy Thanksgiving everyone, be blessed, especially by the small things. In the meanwhile, I am ready for the cooler color of Fall. It’s going to get a little busier around these parts with our northern friends returning. St. Lucie is surely growing. I love to see business pick up for everyone and I stay committed to helping small businesses grow. Continuing to expose non-profit organizations, the people behind them and the people they help is a great pleasure. Somewhere within these pages are a couple of “thank you” notes that gave me a smile when I received them. Please enjoy our special features and columns. The Number One Dis-ease Killing Americans

by Dr. Stuart Shipe, DAOM, MS, RPh Although you might think immediately of the most wellknown disease states such as heart disease, cancer or stroke, this disease doesn’t get much publicity. It attacks insidiously yet is so common. Its symptoms may start with simple fatigue that robs you of vitality, endurance and youth. If the symptom is ignored since it’s so common, then headaches may occur. They might be minor at first and then escalate to debilitating migraines if not addressed. The disease can strike the digestive system causing reflux, stomach, bloating, or inflammation. You may think it’s not enough rest or that you ate the wrong food that promoted these attacks. Although, an improper diet may have contributed to the problem, it’s not the cause. Stimulants and medications such as energy drinks, analgesics, and antacids are used to treat the symptoms. This disease can attack the nervous and skeletal muscle systems as well causing pain, joint stiffness, insomnia, and hormonal imbalances. The chronic use of sleep aides, muscle relaxants, or bioidentical hormones are the go-to remedies often used for years before the true cause of the disease is found. Neck and shoulder stiffness and lower back pain are usually assumed to be from ‘working too hard’ or ‘a long day’. You might have

never associated your chronic allergies from this disease either. These symptoms make you feel old. They reduce your ability to enjoy your hobbies. They even reduce your productivity at work or prevent you from enjoying relationships with your friends and family. If you haven’t guessed by now what this dis-ease is, let me introduce you to stress. Our bodies are well adapted to handle stress in emergencies. Small glands positioned above our kidneys called the adrenals, release either a short-acting stress hormone called adrenalin that stimulates your heart, lungs, and muscles into action or a long-acting stress hormone called cortisol. These hormones shut down your reproductive, digestive, immune, detoxification, and many other systems considered ‘non-essential’ during the emergency situation. Inflammation, weight gain, poor sugar control, and recently even Alzheimer’s have been linked to their overproduction. The first thing that should be done is for your doctor to check with simple tests if your adrenal function is in a reactive, sustained or exhausted phase. There are many natural herbs and whole food vitamins that can supplement the adrenal and begin to reverse the long-term damage stress has caused.

has provided over 400 Free Mammograms in 3 Years by Jeanette Weiss

They typically have a waiting list of 70 women waiting to receive mammograms. “We would rather be able to provide the test on demand than ask a woman to wait and live with the possibility of undiagnosed breast cancer,” said Co-Founder Kerri Dolan. “That’s why fundraising is so important to us.” Windsor Community Angels held their 2nd Annual 5K Walk/Run in downtown Fort Pierce earlier this year. Future events will include a pub crawl and the 3rd Annual 5K in the spring. A big fundraiser that benefits the organization is the Stuart Sailfish Club Saltwater Sister’s Lady Angler Tournament October 17 & 18 at Pirate’s Cove Resort & Marina in Stuart. The public is invited to attend that event, even those not fishing. “This is also just a big party on Saturday, the 18th,” said Dolan. “You don’t have to fish the tournament to participate and have fun. There are themed costume contests, a huge silent auction and raffle, dinner and dancing and more. We would love to see a big crowd at this

With nearly 65,000 uninsured people in St. Lucie County alone, the odds of a woman having breast cancer and going undiagnosed and untreated are far too great. That’s why Windsor Community Angels exists. Founded only 3 years ago, the organization’s sole purpose is to provide free mammograms to uninsured women. To date, the organization has provided more than 400 free mammograms to local men and women, and those mammograms have resulted in several diagnosed cases of breast cancer. “We’re definitely helping to save lives here in St. Lucie County,” said Deby Duke, President and Co-Founder of Windsor Community Angels. “We have said it a hundred times and will say it a hundred more: No woman should forego getting a mammogram simply because she cannot afford it. When investment professionals assist investors with creating an overall plan, they must look at a number of factors to determine what types of investments are right for their clients. Not everyone has the same time horizon, for instance. If one couple’s goal is to come up with enough cash for the down payment on a house, they probably will not choose the same investment vehicle as a couple whose goal is to fund their newborn child’s college education. Because the couple saving for a house will need their funds in a shorter time frame, their investment is likely to be a short-term investment, whereas the other couple may be able to tie up their funds in a longer-term investment vehicle. Tolerance for risk is another factor investment professionals must consider before advising their clients. Risk is the chance investors take of making or losing money on their investments. In general, the greater the risk, the more investors stand to gain or lose.

For most Floridians fall is a magical time of year. We can actually walk on the sand without getting burned and enjoy an evening stroll without sweating. But for me the most exciting part of fall is that some of the healthiest veggies are in season. My favorites are the cruciferous vegetables. Here are the most popular, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, bok choy and brussels sprouts. You don’t have to look far to discover all the amazing benefits of these veggies. The most researched being cancer prevention. They are also commonly used for hormone balancing. Cruciferous vegetables are rich in nutrients and an excellent fiber source. In addition, they contain sulfur-containing chemicals, known as glucosinolates. The glucosinolates in cruciferous vegetables are broken down to form biologically active compounds such as indoles. Indole-3-carbinol has been frequently researched for anticancer benefits. Here are some of the benefits of eating cruciferous vegetables: • They help protect cells from DNA damage • They help inactivate carcinogens • They have antiviral and antibacterial effects • They have anti-inflammatory effects • They inhibit tumor blood vessel formation and tumor cell migration I always try to suggest consuming two to three serving a day of these vegetables. For some this may be difficult so a convenient pill version is available. Unfortunately some of the “magic” can be lost when you turn anything into a pill. If gas is an unwelcome side effect of eating these veggies try taking enzymes and probiotics to strengthen your digestive system. Another trick is chopping broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower into tiny pieces and just having a little bit each hour. I love adding a dash of apple cider vinegar, which also has great health benefits. I also love making a hearty soup or stir fry with the bok choy. Please keep in mind chopped and raw is always better than cooked for the anti cancer benefits. The fiber in these vegetables do help you feel full which can also help you stay away from toxic, acidic foods that put a burden on your body. Happy Fall everyone

Pizza & Pasta Many times I have heard that good Italian food doesn’t exist in Port St. Lucie! However, that certainly is no longer true! Being of Italian decent, with a mother who cooked like a culinary chef, I am here to tell you, that you don’t have to look any further than Panariello’s at its new location in Coco Vista Plaza (near Cameo/PSL Blvd). Mike, Rita and their sons have a first class operation! The food, the decor (great art work, Italian floor tiles, etc.) and the wait staff all shine! They have been in the restaurant business for over 12 years and have perfected their way of doing business! It’s not only beautiful, well decorated, bright and clean, it is also family friendly and the prices are very reasonable. Their menu consists of everything ranging from pizza, subs, salads to mouth watering entrees! My latest visit consisted of salad, which was crisp and delicious, pasta fagoli (just like mamma’s) for my guest, followed by 4-cheese tortellini with prosciutto di Parma! Mamma Mia, que deliciosa! The veal parmigiana was equally superb, tender and cooked to perfection! The garlic rolls are the best you will ever taste. Also, noteworthy, is a FREE bottle of wine when 2 entrees are ordered. All desserts are made in house and you will not be able to resist any of them! The cream puffs are a taste of heaven, the cheesecake, the pasticiotti, the sfogliatelle (my father’s favorite), are all diet breakers! I have tried them all! Do you hear the cries of your neighbors at night? Does it keep you awake? They are lost and without hope, but it is easy to forget their constant pain. Did you know there are more people who have never been inside a church or synagogue in your community than there is in any other area in America? It’s true. A recent Barna study showed of 117 markets surveyed across America, the five county area encompassing the Treasure Coast was number one per-capita, for never having attended a church. There is no denying the great need for the hope of God is this community; but many of the hopeless would never think to step foot in a church…that’s a foreign concept to them. So hope must reach them in other ways. While there are thousands that will never enter a church in our community, 95% of those hurting hearts will turn on the radio this week. The purpose of Christian FM is to provide hope and encouragement by sharing the Word of God on the airwaves in our community. Will you share hope with your neighbors in need? Jesus gives hope and

grace to all who come to Him, and His open arms turn none in need away.
