Sitting at the bar, I met a couple who are fairly new patrons here at Backroom. I asked them “I’m writing an article about the tavern, can you tell me some things you like about the bar?” Without hesitation, they said, “You feel like family here. The bartenders are terrific, personable, down to earth and relatable. They enjoy talking to customers and that’s a welcome change from other establishments.” With a fully stocked bar, 8 beers on tap, 10 TVs, pool tables, dart boards, juke box, Golden Tee, foosball and more, this place has it all. Life continues to happen. We all experience struggles, perhaps with work, acquaintances, family, friends, illness, death, etc., etc. I am no stranger to these. Take hope, a new dawn arises. 1 Thessalonians 5:16 says “Always be joyful.” To quote a friend, “We are going to have tough times over the years. So when the bad times come, it doesn’t mean we have to dance around and be happy about it. We just have to remember that these moments won’t last forever.” I have heard many times; if we were to lay down our cross, and we could choose another’s, we would pick up our own. So instead, let us not allow the “bad” things define us. Pastor Mike’s Corner Column speaks about this in this month’s issue. I am thrilled that winter is coming! Welcome back snowbirds. Com’ on down cooler weather!
Hello dear readers, I recently went flipping through my old CDs. Yes, CDs. I came across my Billy Joel CD, slipped into the player, and enjoyed one of my favorite songs, These Are The Times to Remember. I was happy for the reminder. Don’t those words ring truer the older we get? They do for me. One thing that I love is when I stop and recognize the Red Birds, Wood Storks and Spoonbills that visit me in the morning. I’m setting an intention to really notice the simple things like spending time with family, friends, or even getting to know someone new. The days to hold on to are right now. Thanks Billy! As I was telling her how amazing they were I realized my readers might want to know too! Yams, beets, parsnips, turnips, rutabagas, carrots, yuca, kohlrabi, onions, garlic, celery root (or celeriac), horseradish, daikon, turmeric, jicama, Jerusalem artichokes, radishes, and ginger are all considered roots. Because root vegetables grow underground, they absorb a great amount of nutrients from the soil.

Friends in Pink
F
Friends In Pink is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charity. Our sole mission is to help breast cancer patients in Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties. Founded in 2005, we provide diagnosed Breast Cancer patients, who have inadequate or no health insurance with financial assistance for their Breast Cancer surgery and treatment. A medical bill that represents a minimum of $356,000.00 per person on the Treasure Coast.

The strength and growth of Friends In Pink hinges on our ability to meet the Breast Cancer needs of local friends, neighbors, co-workers and people that provide personal services like hair-dressers or landscapers, for instance. By the time you knew what to call it; you were neck deep in it. It’s called life. And this one is yours. No one else has your version. You’ll never bump into yourself on the sidewalk. You’ll never meet anyone who has your exact blend of lineage, loves, and longings. Your life will never be lived by anyone else. Life is racing by, and if we aren’t careful, you and I will look up. And our shot at it will have passed us by.
But if you’re anything like me, it’s not enough for you to do well. You want to do good. You want your life to matter. You want to live in such a way that the world will be glad you did. I once compared life to a football game. Suppose life had the same time pattern as a football game. Suppose that there were four quarters in the “Game of Life”. And for conversational purposes let us say that the “Game of Life” lasted 80 years. You started the game at birth and the game ended 80 years later. Each quarter would consist of 20 years. First quarter = Birth to 20. Second quarter=21 to 40. Third quarter=41to 60. And fourth quarter
The question is what quarter are you in, and what’s the score? Are you down by a touchdown or more? Are you ahead or behind and most importantly what quarter are you in? Life can pass us by so fast and before you know it you’re at the two-minute warning. The good news is that no matter where you’re at, no matter what quarter you’re in, and no matter what the score, there is a way to guarantee a win. We have an awesome owner and his name is God, and we have a huge fan base in heaven rooting us onto victory. If we stay to the playbook (The Bible) and follow the coach’s game plan, we can’t lose. There is a huge Super bowl party waiting for us in heaven. God made us for an eternal life with Him. What am I doing in this life that will enhance my eternal life? ...Just a thought.
My prayer is that all of us would look at our lives as an opportunity to help someone else and to be less self-centered and more compassionate, to love others the way Jesus loved me. As we approach the Holiday Season I pray that we catch the spirit of love and be grateful for this thing called “LIFE”.

• 1 (3-pound) sugar pumpkin, stemmed, halved lengthwise, and seeded • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil • 1/4 cup apple cider • 1/3 cup light brown sugar • 3 tablespoons honey • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/4 teaspoon grated fresh nutmeg • Pinch of ground cloves

Step 1 Preheat oven to 350°F. Brush cut sides of pumpkin halves with oil. Arrange pumpkin halves, cut side down, on a large rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in preheated oven until very tender when pierced with a fork, about 50 minutes. Remove from oven, and let cool slightly, about 10 minutes. Step 2 Scoop flesh from cooled pumpkin; transfer to bowl of a food processor. Discard pumpkin shell. Add apple cider; process until smooth, about 1 minute, stopping to scrape down sides of bowl as needed. I’ve been doing some thinking lately about how powerful the testimony of
God’s provision, through the goodness of our listeners. That has kept afloat our radio ministry here at Christian FM. It’s staggering to consider the fact that we are a faith-based ministry that has been sustained through nearly three decades of broadcasting (since 1990), through good times and bad times despite the seeming economic impossibility of meeting the rising costs of operating such an enterprise.
The truth is, most Christian radio stations struggle to keep broadcasting because of how rapidly costs have risen in the industry. Due to competition from other stations in the market where they broadcast and economic pressures many rely on accepting donations from national ministries to air their talk programs or preaching, and must constantly ask their listeners to send in donations. If they can’t

pay their bills they will be forced to give up their license, as so many have done, and perhaps lose it to a secular broadcasting company.

The songs we play are carefully selected so that each one may have an impact on someone who tunes in at any given time to cause them to give thanks and praise our Lord. I believe that by being faithful in serving the greatest number of residents we are fulfilling The Great Commission, that is, “Go into the world and preach the good news of Jesus Christ!” So what is it that causes someone to sacrificially give financial help to a radio
station like Christian FM? Well, I’ve asked a number of listeners that question over the years and the answers are all pretty similar. It doesn’t make a difference whether the listener is a male or female, most say, the thing that compels them to be a supporter is because of our programming, our air-personalities and our steady focus on how Jesus is central to our faith! They desire to take ownership of the message and a heart to share it is the reason to give. We make decisions every day, big decisions and small ones. Most stressful is how to be good stewards of the money God gives us. We are moved to give to a cause greater than ourselves because our hearts long to be in the center of God’s will. Those who act out of this conviction say it creates a bond with their favorite station that wouldn’t exist if they weren’t helping financially. To those heroes of the faith I say, thank you for being there for us all these years! It’s because of you that anyone can tune in 91.9 and 96.3 and listen to WSCF, Christian FM.
