TREASURE COAST
Letter from
the publisher Dear Readers,
T
he holidays are here and so is the cooler weather! It is the beginning of Fall and the start of sports season not only on television but on our local fields. Like mine, so many families are engaged and on the sidelines cheering on their children at volleyball, soccer, football, basketball and baseball games. This is also the perfect weather to spend more quality time outside with your family, cycling, walking or taking a stroll around your neighborhood. Schools, churches and community partners will be hosting Fall Festivals, Pumpkin Patches and Spooky Trunk or Treats. Be sure to check out the events page which is full of great low or no cost events for the whole family to attend. My family loves attending the Fall Harvest Fest at Tradition. I’m sure I’ll see you all out there as we venture out (safely) and make memories. In November, we will honor all of our Veterans and their contribution and sacrifice for us on Veterans Day. There will be local community events to honor this special holiday. A few months ago, I had the honor of meeting Deb Dougherty, Founder/
Chair of DDS 4Vets, Inc, a local non-profit organization, whose mission is to serve those that have served our country, Veterans. This wonderful organization will be hosting an extravagant gala on October 16th. Guests include Brian Mast, David Webb, Brigadier General Donald Bolduc, and Michael Gier to name a few. Please visit dds4vets.org for ways that you can lend a hand or contribute to this event. This is my favorite time of the year and I am looking forward to all of the holiday traditions, food and just laughing with friends and family. There are those of us that may not be as fortunate and there are so many organizations that provide resources, services, support and meals for the holidays such as Mustard Seed Ministries who will be feeding thousands of people and are in need of turkey donations or $10.00 gift cards to help meet the need. The information to the public will be posted in various locations throughout the community in October. If interested you can contact them at 772-465-6021 and tell them that you want to donate. There are various toy drives throughout the community to benefit children and families such as the Marine Toys for Tots, Downtown Toy Drive Block Party, and 12 Pubs of Christmas Holiday Crawl just to name few.
“Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.”
S

o as the year comes to an end, I usually take time to reflect on all the life events, memories made, and all that I am thankful for. This year has been a bit different, but if you are able to read this, you have so much to be grateful for. No matter what holiday you celebrate, remember to not take any moment for granted and to always be thankful. During this holiday season, continue to hug a little tighter and say “I love you” a little more. May God bless you and keep you!

Ask the Doctor BY DR. HADI SHALHOUB, D.O., FACOS
Are you at risk for AAA?
D
r. Hadi Shalhoub, D.O., FACOS of Advanced Vascular Solutions specializes in repairs of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms through a minimally invasive procedure. Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm is when the wall of the aorta weakens and begins to bulge. An AAA continues to enlarge and rupture if it is left untreated, causing internal bleeding and possibly death. Nearly 200,000 Americans are diagnosed with AAA annually with 15,000 resulting in death. Risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure, gender, lung disease, family history, and age. Smoking can be a major risk for the growth and rupture of an aneurysm. Studies have shown continued smoking increases the rate of the aneurysm to grow by 20% to 25%. The best way to prevent AAA is by exercising regularly. Eating a heart healthy diet accompanied by aerobic activity for at least 20-30 minutes five days a week improves cardiovascular health, thus reducing the risk of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.

What Can I Do If My Workers’ Compensation Claim Is Denied?
I
Law Office of
Olivia Devonmille, P.A.
BY OLIVIA DEVONMILLE, ESQUIRE
f your claim is denied, you should call a Workers’ Compensation attorney immediately to get advice about challenging the denial. Florida’s Workers’ Compensation law gives insurance companies the ability to deny your entire claim, or to deny specific medical or lost wage benefits. If your claim has been denied by the insurance company, either in whole or in part, do not assume that the insurance company has made a correct decision. Insurance companies do not have the final say – a judge does! If you receive a denial, you should consult a lawyer who practices Workers’ Compensation law to get information about your right to fight the denial. As an injured worker, you are entitled to legal representation to fight the denial. Do not hesitate to call a Workers’ Compensation lawyer because you don’t have money to hire a lawyer. When lawyers represent injured workers, attorney’s fees are paid on a contingency basis. This means that there are no upfront retainer fees, and no monthly bills for legal services. Instead, your Workers’ Compensation lawyer only receives attorney’s fees when they have successfully obtained benefits for you. As an added protection for the injured worker, a Workers’ Compensation lawyer cannot take fees without formal approval from a Workers’ Compensation Judge. There are many reasons why a claim might be denied. Did your employer offer you light duty work that you turned down? Did you miss a doctor’s appointment? Did you test positive for drugs or alcohol after a work accident? Were you accused of “misconduct” at work after your accident? Did your doctor release you to return to work, even though you have not fully recovered or received appropriate medical care? These are only some of the defenses that insurance companies will use to try to deny benefits. If you have a denied claim, please call my office to schedule a free initial consultation to discuss your claim with me.
Olivia represents workers who are injured on the job. She brings her unique
perspective and experience
as a former Workers’ Compensation Judge in Fort Pierce.

astor Michael Beath passed away on September 14, 2021, surrounded by what mattered most to him in life, his family. Mike was married to the love of his life, Lorraine, for 53 years. He leaves behind an amazing legacy of which he was very proud: His four children, Jimmy, Wendy, Michael and Dennis, six grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. Pastor Mike started the first Celebrate Recovery on the Treasure Coast at Morningside Church twenty years ago. Mike was the Recovery Pastor at Morningside Church. He was instrumental in so many lives coming to Jesus and beating their addictions in life, their hurts, habits and hang-ups. His passion was to find the hurting and lead them to healing through Jesus Christ. He would get up every morning full of joy and say to Jesus…”Use Me Today.” He always said, “Don’t worry. Everything is going to be okay.” And everything is okay now that he is seated at the table with our Lord.
In Deepest Sympathy. Words cannot match how much he will be missed. With Tremendous Gratitude & Love,

Artificial Reefs and The Oculina Bank
Sponsored By OF FORT PIERCE
T
Christa Stone and Capt. Jack Medla
alchetron.com
he Treasure Coast is home to one of the most impressive stretches of reef structures in the Americas, the Oculina Bank. From its southernmost point in Fort Pierce, the Oculina Bank stretches 90km north up through Cape Canaveral. What makes this reef so impressive is its depth. Ranging from 200400ft of water, it is far deeper than most people would think of when they hear reef. The bank has been hit hard by overfishing that both hurt the fish populations and the coral structures themselves. Regulations and conservation efforts have shown promising results to help bring the Oculina Bank back to its former glory, but the war is never-ending. The bank is home to the Oculina vericosa coral. This is a hard branching coral that grows tree-like structures 2-3m tall. This specific coral serves as the spawning locations and nurseries for the Gag and Scamp groupers. On top of overfishing, the more devastating Oculina varicosa coral effect was the destruction of these coral structures. With their habitat destroyed and their numbers already down, we saw a massive decline in their population. The Oculina Experimental Closed Area (OECA) restricted all commer-

cial fishing and recreational bottom fishing within that zone. As fish populations rise, more of the problem now is to get the corals back and thriving naturally on these reefs. To accomplish this, we are turning to artificial reefs. On the 25th of September, the Tug Singleton sunk by McCulley Marine Services in 165ft of water 18 miles off Fort Pierce Inlet. Alongside McCulley was Christa Stone (The Peoples Reef Project) and James Oppenborn (St Lucie County Coastal Recourses Coordinator). Their goal is to create an artificial structure to where put in the right place will recruit the Oculina vericosa naturally. When these structures begin to grow large enough, divers can cut fragments and place them across various parts of the bank. Anglin Insider was fortunate enough to meet and learn from all of these fantastic people during this process. We will dive into the background and the science that is the actual reason behind these wrecks and artificial reefs. An unbelievable amount of time and effort goes into every reef project, and no other area does it quite as well as the Treasure Coast. These groups are accomplishing amazing things, but little is known about this process. There are many more important reasons than just a fishing number or a dive spot. Anglin Insider will show just that and more on Episode 3, Tug Singleton.

Remembering Florida Highwayman,
Willie Daniels T
he iconic Florida Highwaymen artist, Willie Daniels was a gifted painter who made his mark in his beloved hometown, Fort Pierce. Daniels brought a unique distinguished style that impacted the canvas. Daniels was born in 1950 in Bainbridge, Georgia but later moved to Fort Pierce, Florida in 1960. His family settled just a few houses away from Mary Ann Carroll, Roy McLendon, and Harold Newton – three future original Florida Highwaymen artists. Growing up around these talented artists, Daniels was eager to begin his artistic journey and try his hand with a paintbrush. He was a young, keen observer and learned the skill very quickly. Daniels fostered an instinctive, natural talent with the brush and vibrant illustrations became instantly recognizable. Daniels later became one of the original 26 Highwaymen and was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004. “Daniels paintings are distinctive and unmistakable. Coming of age in the 60s to young adulthood in the 70s, his visual style stands out with densely
packed compositions of curving tree trunks and coiling branches, often suffused with the hues of a bold sky and shimmering reflections, and a palette of almost fluorescent colors. Even a still scene appears to teem with vibrant life.” ~ A. E. Backus Museum. The Florida Highwaymen are a group of well-known African American landscape artists from the 1950s, and 70’s taught by a friend and mentor, A.E. “Bean” Backus, a famous landscape artist. Renowned for their resourcefulness, speed, and creativity, the group of artists employed a unique painting style to assert their economic independence and agency during and after the segregation era. aniels passed Sunday, September 19th, 2021 in Fort Pierce at age 71 after battling a long illness, according to his niece Shontae Armstrong. Daniels will always be remembered as a gentle, caring man that shared his passion for art with the rest of the world.

ince 1956 The Arc of St. Lucie County has been the premier advocate for improving the lives of children and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Over the years, The Arc added programs to address the needs of this fragile population to include residential and employment services, medical transportation, after school care and adult day services. Four modern and updated homes provide 24-hour care for their adult residents. The adult day program assists over 120 participants with life and independency skills, including cooking, laundry, and job preparation. The children’s after-school program, funded by the Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County, has dedicated staff who assist with homework, IEP’s, socialization skills and transportation.

Once a child enters the program at age 5, The Arc of St. Lucie County ensures they reach milestones to transition into the adult program and participants receive a continuum of care throughout their lifetime. “For years, The Arc of St. Lucie County has been known to give individuals with disabilities the opportunity to grow and now our focus is on ameliorating their lives to ensure the highest quality of education and opportunity”, said CEO Athary Koning. Direct Support Professionals (DSP’s) are staff who are trained in CPR, medications, and techniques to redirect participants to become contributing members of society. These staff members are the backbone of the organization, and they work tirelessly to create a loving and emotionally safe environment for participants.
Ms. Koning told us that her participants volunteer in beach clean ups, participate in local events and are self-advocates who “promote inclusion and highlight the ability of each individual, rather than seeing the disability”. arents and guardians are a big part of advocating for more accessibility and resources for their loved ones. Participants speak to community partners about the importance of creating a more equitable society for those with developmental and intellectual disabilities. In October, a handful of The Arc’s participants will accept a proclamation from the St. Lucie County Board of Commissioners for October as “Disability Employment Awareness Month”. Community partners are a large part of keeping the programs vibrant and innovative. “We are grateful for the partnerships we have with the St. Lucie County Community. This is great and embracing place to be”.

f this disease hasn’t affected you or a loved one yet, you’re one of the lucky ones. Unfortunately Arthritis has affected more then 350 million people worldwide, nearly 40 million people in the United States alone. The sad part is that over a quarter million of that number are children. There are two types of Arthritis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones wears down over time. Although osteoarthritis can damage any joint, the disorder most commonly affects joints in your hands, knees, hips and spine. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that can affect more than just your joints. In some people, the condition can damage a wide variety of body systems, including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart and blood vessels. An autoimmune disorder, rheumatoid arthritis occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks your own body’s tissues. Unlike the wear-andtear damage of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis affects the lining of your joints. Arthritis, like all inflammatory conditions of the human body, can be helped by

following a non-inflammatory lifestyle. Unfortunately there is no magic pill, (no matter what you read on social media!) or medical miracle for this disease. I had the privilege of helping a friend with his rheumatoid arthritis and after a challenging year of changing almost every habit he had all his symptoms were reversed. His wife who had anxiety, anemia and daily headaches was also free of her ailments. The body has an amazing ability to heal itself if given the right tools. Here is what he used, keep in mind he was 100% committed. • Skin Brushing 10 minutes a day • Infra Red Sauna 30 minutes 3x a week • Ion Foot Detox 1x a week • 20oz of FRESH vegetable juice each day • No sugar except for occasional fruits • No flour • Curamin 6x day His pain and lack of mobility led him to a healthier life, but it is always better to be preventative. Steps to Establishing Your Non Profit T
o date, I have covered where nonprofits come from and some of the things a person needs to prepare in order to get their nonprofit up and running. This article is going to focus on the actual steps that need to be taken for your non-profit to be established. Concepts and ideas are foundational to beginning the 501C3 application process. Having a solid non-profit concept will largely determine the organization’s level of success. For example, starting a non-profit that helps to provide winter clothing for children who cannot afford it sounds like a very noble cause that is worthy of support. However, if the organization focuses its services on the state of Florida their level of effectiveness will be limited by the state’s climate. These are the types of long-term considerations that must be part of your initial planning. Once your plan is in place you will need to register your organizations appropriately and begin to realize its mission. The following are the steps involved in seeing your 501C3 transition from an idea to a tangible organization: Ideas & Concept Development Your first step is to do as I described above and come up with a concept for your non-profit. IS there a group of people, community situation, or societal ill that you would like to address? Do you have passion and interest for helping a particular group or culture? Is there a way to provide aid and support for the short and long term? Once you have answers to these types of questions you can use them collectively to generate a mission statement. When your non-profits name and mission are outlined succinctly you are ready for the next step.
