Hello dear readers,

Happy August! I hope you all have enjoyed the first half of the summer. Maybe you’ve even been able to take a little vacay. I must share that I had an adventurous road trip to northern Minnesota, which gave me my last blast of cold, in late May. The whole way, and all through the trip, all I could think was; God, you make the most amazing, breathtaking pictures, thank you! ~”You thrill me, Lord, with all you have done for me!” Psalm 92:4. It’s the simple things in life that fill me the most. Even right here in St. Lucie, check out those spectacular skies before & after our late day storms. We are so pleased with the many positive comments and questions on our last issue’s “Save the Chimps” article. I owe accolades to Joanna Johnson for the wonderful article and a job well done! For all who are interested in visiting the sanctuary, Save the Chimps’ members day is coming up. It only happens twice a year. Be sure to check our Community Events Calendar for the date and contact STC for membership information. It’s Back to School Time! A very busy time for parents to prepare and redirect into shifting schedules. Please browse though our pages for savings, plus mind, body and soul support in our wonderful columns! Speaking of surprises, there is always something we can learn. Many of you may know this, but it is not something that I ever gave enough thought to. Because I was working with several people running for some type of political office, I found out how important a Primary Election is. As dutiful American citizens we have the luxury of vote and voice. Should we forgo our right to vote in a Primary Election, our favorite candidate may not make it to the General Election. Art Mundo,

Expression and Education in Art

where like-minded spirits could positively impact the lives of everyone who entered their doors. Allie Comer, Deena Wynne, Sherry Horton and Ginny Piech Street got together one day about 8 years ago and made it happen... the ART MUNDO manifestation began! The entire community embraced the project and the vision with support, backing and funding came from all areas and organizations. The support was overwhelming and humbling! With only a few people together, a good idea and 8 years later still growing strong, giving back and growing forward. A ton of talent, support, volunteers and donations continue to flow through the center. It’s all about the community outreach, awareness for the downtown area (Keep Ft Pierce Funky project), and really all of St Lucie County. An Encouraging refuge for incumbent artists to be, think, live and create outside of the box... it’s permeated space where you’re taught to look at life differently. These Light Workers are not just in the art business they are in the people business!

As back to school time approaches so do the lyrics of an old song. “I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they posses inside, give them a sense of pride. Let the children’s laughter remind us who we used to be.” There’s a local place that brings that to light and life everyday! Art Mundo & Orange Avenue Studios, is a center for creative expression in beautiful, Historic Downtown Ft. Pierce. For the past 7 years it has served as a dynamic cultural hub drawing artists of all ages, backgrounds, vibrant personalities and mediums of interest to the historic center. Four phenomenal female artists and visionaries had an idea for bringing the arts to Ft Pierce in a unique community of culture and change. They envisioned a place that would make art approachable, fun and full of life, free of judgment, full of support, love and encouragement. To create a place

Most of their causes have gotten pretty big like... St Lucie County’s Art Show an Annual High School event. Every single private and public high school is invited to participate in conjunction with high school teachers throughout the county. Art Mundo hosts an open reception in the Underground Gallery and the general public casts their votes. Over the years Art Mundo has presented large cash awards directly to the students or made considerable donations to schools themselves for art supplies, always in huge demand and greatly appreciated. This year it just blossomed with Marsha Cross as Art Mundo’s liaison artist. Marsha is in charge of this huge undertaking operating flawlessly and full of grace, just floated right through it. Side note... Marsha Cross was the first studio rented when Art Mundo opened. “Lil Feet” program is yet another passionate cause Art Mundo is deeply involved in, where retired fireman boots are donated for works of art that are created by our Art Mundo volunteer artists and proceeds help buy new shoes for under privileged SLC school children. Art Mundo also Partners with VSA Florida and the Billy Miller Art for Life foundation hosting the second annual “A Different View” of art by artists who are not defined by their abilities, disabilities, addictions or M a r k e t p l a c e

any other label. Their creative and self-expressive talents were on display from April through June at Art Mundo. They hosted the “Empty Bowls Project” in April with all proceeds benefiting the Treasure Coast Food Bank. They hosted the “Art of Confinement project” displaying artwork by prisoners of Okeechobee Corrections Institution where donations and art supplies were raised, greatly appreciated and put to good use. They are a proud sponsor and partner with Big Brothers, Big Sisters and countless other organizations. Their donations have not gone unappreciated for fund raising events and worthy causes. Among the events are Heathcote Botanical Gardens Annual Bonsai Ball, Quarters Auction, and the Emerging Artist program. Art Mundo encourages artists from all ages and walks of life to “get their creative on” through exploration and expression. Each new artist has a professional artist mentor embracing his or her journey. See side photo of inspirational new 14-year-old artist Imani Noel. “She is amazing, charming, humble and undoubtedly one of the most talented “Emerging Artists” we have had the fortune of working with!” As well as side info about an amazing 5-year-old artist finding his wings and soaring at this young age! When I think of Art Mundo, and all that they have done and continue to do pretty much operating solely on donations, volunteers and labors of love! In February 2011 I was diagnosed with Breast cancer at the age of 48. My Father passed away a few months later from esophageal cancer. It was like cancer was surrounding me suffocating me

change. I started to contemplate my previous life and realized I was a workaholic and so much more. I never took time for me and I never took the time to look up at the Sky or just breathe. My surgery took place at Martin Memorial Hospital in Stuart FL; My brilliant surgeon Dr. Mark Beatty who also performed my mothers bi lateral mastectomy 6 years prior walked me through each step and answered all my questions in gentle caring way. To this day I thank and praise him and the entire staff at this amazing hospital. After my recovery from a Bi Lateral Mastectomy, I started taking and learning about yoga and fell in love. My diet changed as well and I started to slow down and appreciate life on a daily basis. I was so blessed with beautiful family and friends who continued to show me I was enough. My world was becoming settled down and my health was improving with each breath. My yoga practice continued to inspire me and in 2012 with the love and support of my precious mother we opened Down To Earth Yoga Studio together. You see I truly was never happy running, from my emotions hiding and masking who I really was. Yoga taught me to honor myself without force but with love. In time it became how I started to think and live. The Mind, Body and Spirit link started to connect with me in my life on and off the matt. Today with all my heart I truly feel that Cancer saved my life and allowed me to find who I am, a beautiful spiritual cancer survivor, breathing and helping others walk the path of Love and understanding. I love my Life and live each day as if it is my last. I know today that cancer does not define me. I honor the place in you which is love, truth, light and peace. When you are in that place within yourself, and I am in that place within myself, we are one. A respectful bow from soul to soul. Namaste

It has been six months since you woke up feeling ready to tackle the world. A new year, high hopes and full of ambition. That this year will be different! But for all the good intentions, only a tiny fraction of us keep our resolutions; University of Scranton research suggests that just 8% of people achieve their New Year’s goals. I believe we can revisit and revitalize or goals. Possibly simplify, or be more realistic. Throughout the world, humans have the tendency to wish for the same things. Time and time again we are shown that we need to take care of our emotional self before we can “fix” our physical body. Research shows that everyone either hopes to lose weight or have a more fit body. Unfortunately most of us give up within the first month. I have planned a summer of hope for myself and I hope all my readers will come along for the journey. I made it into a check list in case you need accountability. This list will empower you to feel healthier so you can make better choices about your next moment in life.

9. Have protein with each meal. It can be vegan forms of protein. Look for high quality protein, organic, free range, grass fed and keep to the size of a deck of cards if animal source. 10. Sit in quiet for ten minutes, or with your favorite uplifting song.

My hope for all of us is if we nurture ourselves and add healthy habits into ourlife, we will love ourselves and the world we live in.

Summer is my favorite time of year. Vacations, parties, long days outdoors with friends and family and PLENTY OF SUN. During this time of the year it is extremely important that we pay special attention to our skin. One of the most effective ways to build a defense against sun damage is to boost your skin’s immunity with healthy daily doses of Vitamin C. Vitamin C is essential to healthy skin. As we age our skin’s natural supply of this nutrient decreases. When other factors like smoking, overexposure to UV light, and pollution and lack of nutrient rich foods are added in, Vitamin C decreases even more rapidly causing signs of aging. The great news is that you can replenish your skin’s Vitamin C levels and slow down the effects of time on your skin.

When it comes to treating age and sunspots, Vitamin C can be just as effective as a chemical peel! While it’s not a replacement for sunscreen, vitamin C protects against and may repair UV damage like discoloration and fine lines. Taking vitamin C through a supplement or food is great for your health, but to target signs of aging on your face, topical vitamin C is best. In fact, applying vitamin C to the skin can be 20 times more effective than taking it orally. Look for products that contain between 3% and 10% of vitamin C and include the active ingredient ascorbic acid or L-ascorbic acid. Pay attention to the packaging – all antioxidants, including vitamin C, are vulnerable to deterioration in the presence of air and light. Unless the product is in an airtight and opaque package, don’t buy it! Apply topical vitamin C once a day, ideally after you’ve exfoliated in the morning to utilize vitamin C’s sun-protecting properties. On rare occasions, topical vitamin C can cause some mild dryness or flaking. Counteract this side effect with a moisturizer. Vitamin C is safe to combine with all your other skin care products.
