the publisher Letter from

Dear Readers,

W

inter is official, and it is a lovely one at that! Yes, I have my boots on. It does kind of seem like “the season” never ended down here, but now I can see, we’ve got our snowbirds back. Florida is the place to be. Welcome! Things are moving around here with huge development and growth all around us. It sure does look like everyone is keeping quite busy, out and about. That is a beautiful thing. I hope that the holidays treated you well. Wouldn’t it be great if we kept the Christmas spirit all year through? It could be Chicken Soup for the Soul. Someone said to me recently that January 2021 feels like the thirteenth month of 2020. In some ways I can identify. As goes an English Proverb; “Good things come to those who wait.” So, I repeat to myself, time to get out of the holding pattern, no more monkey business. Onward and forward. “But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day.” – 2 Peter 3:8 NLT

f you’ve ever experienced restless, painful, or itchy legs, you might have varicose veins. This condition is very common. Did you know more than 30 million Americans have varicose veins? Unfortunately, however, less than 10% of people seek treatment. I would like to provide some education on the condition to you. Varicose veins happen when the valves in leg veins no longer function, resulting in pooling blood in the legs. People often assume these blue, red, or flesh-colored veins are just a cosmetic nuisance or confuse them with spider veins. Some people also write them off as just a sign of getting older. The truth is that varicose veins may be related to a more serious medical condition called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Allowing CVI to continue to get worse can have some serious implications. In addition to causing leg pain and swelling, CVI can result in leg restlessness, skin damage, and even ulcers and open wounds in the leg. The longer the condition the develops, the more likely it is for these symptoms to occur. Therefore it is better to treat varicose veins as soon as possible.

Protecting Your Workers’ Comp Benefits

Law Office of

Olivia Devonmille, P.A.

BY OLIVIA DEVONMILLE, ESQUIRE

W

hen you are injured on the job, there are important steps that you must take to protect your right to collect Workers’ Comp benefits. REPORT THE ACCIDENT: The first thing that you should do after a work accident is to report the accident to your supervisor. This is important even if the injury is minor and you feel that you do not need immediate medical attention. Something like a slip and fall can cause serious injuries that do not show up immediately after the accident. If you wait to report your accident until you realize how badly you are hurt, your employer may claim that you were hurt somewhere other than the workplace. GET MEDICAL CARE: Your employer or their insurance adjuster should provide you with medical care as soon as your accident is reported. It is best to be seen by the doctor right away, even if you think that you are not seriously injured. TELL THE TRUTH: Workers’ compensation benefits can be denied if you fail to give a complete and accurate medical history to all health care providers who treat you for your injuries. The Workers’ Compensation law allows the insurance company to ask questions about your medical and accident history and the law requires you to give full and accurate answers. It is extremely important to be truthful, even if you believe the information is not important. Failure to do this can result in the insurance company denying all your workers’ compensation benefits.

Olivia represents workers who are injured on the job. She brings her unique

perspective and experience

as a former Workers’ Compensation Judge in Fort Pierce.

TAKE PICTURES: If you have injuries which you can see, like a cut or a bruise, take pictures of your injuries. If you are able, take photographs of the scene of the accident. Write down the names of any witnesses to your accident.

Olivia Devonmille, P.A.

In my next column, I will provide you with an overview of available benefits under Florida’s Workers’ Compensation law. If you would like to schedule a free initial consultation to discuss your Workers’ Comp claim, call my office to schedule an appointment.

column Pastor

Mike’s Corner

The Silent Partner

D

uring the 1800’s, a famous organist traveled from town to town across America giving concerts. It was in the days of the old pump organs, so in each town he hired a boy to work the pump behind the organ during the concert. After a performance in one town, he couldn’t shake the young boy he’d hired. As the organist walked towards his hotel in the cool of the evening, the boy beamed up at him. “We sure had a great concert tonight, didn’t we?” “You mean I had a great concert tonight,” replied the maestro. “You only pumped the organ. Now, go home!” The next night, the organist gave another concert in the same town, and once again the boy worked the bellows behind the scenes. The opening piece of the concert was a beautiful fugue by Bach. But as the performer masterfully attacked the notes of the second piece, the music suddenly stopped, his rapid fingering bringing nothing more than a faint clicking sound from the keyboard. That’s when the little boy stuck his head around the corner of the organ, smiled, and said to the maestro, “We aren’t havin’ a very good concert tonight, are we?” Note: A successful partnership recognizes the importance of every player. God tell us in the Bible that, “As Iron Sharpens Iron, so will one man sharpen another”. We are better together. God created us to be relational.

We were not meant to be “Lone Rangers.” We need each other. When I’m by myself I’m in bad company. My stinking thinking can really cause me problems. When I am surrounded by fellow Christian brothers and sisters I receive encouragement and support when needed. I don’t have to take on the problems of life by myself.

“We are better together.” “You are better off to have a friend than to be all alone, because then you will get more enjoyment out of what you earn. If you fall, your friend can help you up. But if you fall without having a friend nearby, you are really in trouble. If you sleep alone, you won’t have anyone to keep you warm on a cold night. Someone might be able to beat up one of you, but not both of you. As the saying goes, “A rope made from three strands of cord is hard to break.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12) et us lean on each other and seek out comfort from being with each other and support one another. Just a Thought.

BY LEONARD S. VILLAFRANCO, ESQ.

ith the current pandemic occurring, people are coming face to face with their own mortality, and realizing they need to plan for the worst. This goes for all of us, no matter our age. As you face your mortality, take an opportunity to learn what we need to do for the people that you love. I recently heard a tragic story from a young woman who recently lost her fiancé to COVID-19. Because she was not listed on her fiancé’s health directive and HIPAA waiver, she could not get any information on his condition from the hospital. Eventually, someone told her that he wasn’t in ICU anymore. While she was relieved, when she hadn’t heard anything else, she called again. She eventually learned that her fiancé wasn’t in the ICU, he had passed away the day before, and no one had told her. No one expects things like this to happen, especially if you are healthy and making plans for your future. But sometimes the worst does happen, and if it does, you want the people you love to be able to grieve properly, without leaving them with a mess of fear and confusion. You want to be sure that certain people in your life are informed if you go to the hospital, and kept up to date on your condition. You’d also want to avoid a drawn-out court process to handle your estate after your death, or save your loved ones from the fate of not being able to access your assets if you are hospitalized. First, have a worst-case scenario conversation with your family. It’s better to face the inevitable with those that we love, and be ready. Next, create an Inventory of “What Matters.” Start right now. It is a great resource to leave for your loved ones, so they know where to find everything that is important to you, and to them, if something should happen to you. Also update your Health Care Directive. This is extra important if you want your loved ones to avoid the tragic situation above. You absolutely must name Legal Guardians for our Kids. Think about what would happen to them right now if something were to happen to you, for both the long term and the future. Do NOT delay reviewing and updating these documents. Finally, schedule an appointment with the law office of Villafranco & Garcia, PLLC at (772) 871-6441… Even if you already have a plan in place. We will review your current situation and bring you up to date to avoid heartache for those that you love.

With warm regards, Leonard S. Villafranco, Esq.

Caring for Your

Heart “We can make lifestyle changes that would directly result in a healthier cardiovascular system.”

C

aring for the heart is one of a human’s most important jobs. Many of us are crippled by fear of heart disease and stroke that simple blood pressure checks cause panic attacks. The customers I am seeing for blood pressure issues are younger than ever, feeling that they have no choice but to be on pharmaceuticals for the rest of their lives. Luckily, I have seen firsthand many people taking their health and heart into their own hands and reversing heart disease. If you go to the CDC’s website the statistics are pretty grim for hypertension. Here are just a few: • Having hypertension puts you at risk for heart disease and stroke, which are leading causes of death in the United States. • In 2018, nearly half a million deaths in the United States included hypertension as a primary or contributing cause. • Nearly half of adults in the United States (108 million, or 45%) have hypertension defined as a systolic blood pressure ≥ 130 mm Hg or a diastolic blood pressure ≥ 80 mm Hg or are taking medication for hypertension. • Only about 1 in 4 adults (24%) with hypertension have their condition under control. • High blood pressure was a primary or contributing cause of death for more than 494,873 people in the United States in 2018. • High blood pressure costs the United States about $131 billion each year, averaged over 12 years from 2003 to 2014.

10

BETTER LIVING & MARKETPLACE MAGAZINE

Those statistics are from 2018. I can’t imagine what they will be after the stressful past year. THERE IS SOME GOOD NEWS! We can make lifestyle changes that would directly result in a healthier cardiovascular system. 1. Eliminate sugar and processed food as your insulin level elevates, so does your blood pressure. Cleveland Clinic, ranked No. 1 in the nation for heart care, does note that insulin resistance and insulin levels can lead to Hypertension. 2. Address any sleep issues you have. Sleep apnea and other sleep disorders can cause a rise in blood pressure. 3. Consider taking Magnesium. Magnesium has a direct effect on the relaxation of vascular smooth muscle and the regulation of ions important to blood pressure control. 4. Add Aged Garlic to your supplement program. 5. Begin a daily Meditation practice

is a month filled with hearts, whether it’s celebrating Valen772-403-4500 | ebruary www.TreasureHealth.org tine’s Day or raising awareness about heart health. At Treasure Coast

Hospice, “having a hospice heart” isn’t reserved just for February, but is a year-round philosophy that drives a team of dedicated healthcare professionals to deliver compassionate care to patients at the end of life and bring comfort to their families. Four decades after Dame Cicely Saunders’ vision of quality end-of-life care, hospice has become a medical specialty focused on meeting the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients and their families. For those in the field, this holistic approach to care is more than just a job, it is a calling. For Treasure Coast Hospice CEO Jackie Kendrick, CHPCA, and her staff, “it’s about having a hospice heart.” “When you have the privilege of caring for patients and families at such an important stage of their lives, you realize that this is not so much a career as a calling,” said Kendrick. “You TREASURE COAST HOSPICE become devoted to the people in your care and CEO JACKIE KENDRICK, CHPCA to the concept that hospice is about life, about making every minute count. While you use every bit of your professional expertise in your work, you lead with your heart. I see this dedication in our team members each and every day. Their commitment to care is truly a labor of love.”

Three Ways Low Inventory Is a Win for Sellers Thursday October 29th, 2020 – For Sellers, Housing Market Updates, Pricing he number of houses for sale today is significantly lower than the high buyer activity in the current housing market. According to Lawrence Yun, Chief Economist for the National Association of Realtors (NAR): “There is no shortage of hopeful, potential buyers, but inventory is historically low.” When the demand for homes is higher than what’s available for sale, it’s a great time for homeowners to sell their house. Here are three ways low inventory can help you win if you’re ready to make a move this fall.

1. Higher Prices

With so many more buyers in the market than homes available for sale, homebuyers are frequently entering into bidding wars for the houses they

The Keyes Company

want to purchase. This buyer competition drives home prices up. As a seller, this can definitely work to your advantage, potentially netting you more for your house when you close the deal.

2. Greater Return on Your Investment

Rising prices mean homes are also gaining value, which drives an increase in the equity you have in your home. In the latest Homeowner Equity Insights Report, CoreLogic explains: “In the second quarter of 2020, the average homeowner gained approximately $9,800 in equity.” This year-over-year growth in equity gives you the ability to put that money toward a down payment on your next home or to keep it as extra savings.

3. Better Terms

When we’re in a sellers’ market like we are today, you’re in the driver’s seat if you sell your house. You have the power to sell on your terms, and buyers are more likely to work with you if it means they can finally move into their dream home. So, is low housing inventory a big deal? Yes, especially if you want to sell your house at the perfect time. Today’s market gives sellers immense negotiating power. However, it won’t last forever, especially as more sellers return to the housing market next year. If you’re considering selling your house, the best time to do so is now.

Bottom Line

If you’re interested in taking advantage of the current sellers’ market, let’s connect today to determine your best move in our local market.

How I Became a “Bug Guy”

T

he first thing people ask me when they see me wearing my neon orange is, “How did you get into the bug business?” The answer is simple – I was one of their many satisfied customers. I had RATS in my attic! Of course we tried to solve the problem ourselves because we knew it would cost and arm and a leg to get rid of them. After a few months of no success we gave up. That’s when I made the call that changed my live. Ken came out and showed me exactly where the rats were getting in. I was stunned how affordable the quote was to get rid of them. He even offered to treat my house and yard for my ongoing ant problem. Needless to say, Ken and Jim came out the very next day to do the work. While Ken was servicing the outside, Jim went over the service with me step by step. A week later, I called the Bug Guys to thank them. Not only were the rats gone, we had no more fire ants! During that phone call, Jim asked me about a position in the Bug Guys family I would be perfect for. Knowing how impressed I was with the service, I knew I wanted to be part of the Bug Guy team. I am one lucky girl surrounded by amazing co-workers and happy customers.
