Weather your significant other, parent, child, family member, neighbor or a dear friend; let your heart shine in their lives. Sometimes we have no clue that we can make the biggest difference to another just by saying a kind word. I recently heard a new song by Kari Jobe. The lyrics are like this; “We are the light of the world, we are the city on a hill, we gotta let the light shine.” It completely shifted my focus to “what is really important in life?” We all have a purpose. ”You are the salt of the earth; 14”You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill 13 cannot be hidden..” Matthew 5:13-14 It is in giving that we receive. Just ask Sandee Allen who has been working with the Humane Society SLC for years. This year is the 11th Annual Fur Ball. The Fur Ball is a fund-raiser for HSSLC and the Humane Society is a non-profit organization that needs your help. Julie White our feature writer, had an interview with Sandee and shares a wonderful article with lots of information about HSSLC and the Fur Ball. It is the 50th Anniversary of the SLC Fair! After the event all funds from The Fur Ball go toward the general fund for the Humane Society of Saint Lucie County, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit open admission shelter meaning they won’t refuse any dog or cat, stray, injured, or just unwanted. Besides their care for the homeless pets, they provide low-cost spay and neuter for resident of St. Lucie County. The HSSLC provides shelter and love for 7000 to 8000 animals each year. Sandee explains “This is a team effort with staff and volunteers. We have two huge fenced in areas and every day we take out every dog and play with them. We make all attempts to provide a good home for our dogs and cats. Every weekend look for us at events around the county with pets ready for adoption. We are in Petco every day and in 2014 there were 400 adoptions out of Petco. We are in PetSmart on weekends too. We are at all Saturday events with our mobile adoption units. For instance, we were recently at Pirate Fest in downtown Fort Pierce where we walked around with the pets. We take our pets everywhere we can possibly take them to find them good homes. Foster homes are a big part of our service. After animals are in the shelter for a while they get very shy which hampers adoption because they do not appear energetic to potential families. At foster homes the dogs and cats learn to be social and outgoing and they are taken to the outdoor events.”

How much does it cost to adopt? “Generally $90.00 for a dog which includes the spay and neuter, all shots, and a microchip. Too many of us take for granted a very special organ inside of us. Although it only weighs eight to ten ounces its job is one of the most important in the human body. This organ, the human heart, beats one hundred thousand times a day, pumping two thousand gallons of blood to sixty thousand miles of blood vessels. Some time we have false security that if we get our cholesterol checked and do a stress test we are safe. Heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States can be prevented. Other than a genetic issue we can make a difference between life and death. Studies show that it only takes six habits to drastically reduce your risk of a heart attack. 1. Don’t smoke.
2. Keep a healthy weight.
3. Get moderate to vigorous exercise for at least 2.5 hours a week. 4. Watch seven less hours of TV/screen-time a week. 5. Drink one or fewer alcohol beverages daily.
6. Eat a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish or EFA’S. As well as limit sugary drinks, process and red meats, trans fats, and sodium. Do not worry if this seems impossible, study participants lower their risks while following some of these suggestions. St. Lucie County Fair History their permanent home. Setting up at the new location took place in a rather hurried fashion, but was just about flawless. Revenues for gate attendance that first year was just shy of doubling. Phase one buildings included 3 air conditioned exhibit halls, a small livestock show arena, a concession picnic pavilion and 4 livestock buildings. Phase 2 included a small animal/ “ag”tivity exhibit hall and a 200 x 300 multi-purpose arena. The new fairgrounds is large enough to carry on multiple events at one time. Upon completion it will be the second largest fairgrounds in the state of Florida.

ifty years ago, a small group of individuals decided it was time St. Lucie County had their own fair. They formed a committee and laid the foundation to what has become the single largest annual event on the Treasure Coast.
The community asked for a better fairgrounds and it is the community that is helping to build this fantastic facility. The County of St. Lucie, the Community and the St. Lucie County Fair Association have made a commitment to build a top notch facility that everyone will be proud of. Requests from the community to help came in right from the start. Tommy Hawkins of Hawkin’s and Son’s paving gathered site preparation businesses to help with the clearing. With help from the County the infrastructure was under way.
In January of 1965, the Association voted to hold the first fair in February of 1966, working with the Sandy Shoes Committee and the Cattlemen’s Parade the first fair dates were designated to be February 25 through March 6, 1966. Deggeller Attractions was the first Midway operator. Once the infrastructure was completed, it was time for the buildings. The St. Lucie County Fair has featured some of the country’s top headliners, including: Trace Adkins, Toby Keith, Montgomery Gentry, Lorretta Lynn, Billy Ray Cyrus, Jake Owen, John Anderson, Charlie Daniels, 38 Special, The Guess Who, Kellie Pickler, Little Jimmy Dickens and Tracy Byrd to name a few. These talented artists have brought fair crowds to their feet with their incredible performances. The St. Lucie County Fair has always been extremely proud of the youth exhibits held each year at the fair. The market steer and swine auctions have received state recognition. The record held for top price for steers is owned by Ryan Holley at $10.50 per lb. in 2004. Evan Miller (2004) owns the record held for top price on the swine at $42.00 per lb., which is also a state record. Youth exhibits include sewing, food, knitting, quilting, wood working, small animals, large animals and a multitude of educational projects. This year we are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the St. Lucie County Fair. The Fair opens on Friday, February 27 and will run through March 8, 2015. It has grown to be the largest annual event on the Treasure Coast with almost 140,000 paid attendees in 2014. Every day there is something new and exciting happening at the Fair. Daily promotions, live entertainment and dozens of rides on the midway. Bring the family and help us celebrate 50 years of fun. Advance tickets are on sale now at stluciecountyfair.org.
Memories: Pat Dunn (has volunteered at each Fair for 50 years) I was part of the very first St. Lucie County Fair through membership in the St. Lucie County Farm Bureau. I sold tickets from a booth in the middle of the access road. Tickets were $1.00 per car. Later my children showed dairy cows in the livestock area, doing this for many years and later moving on to beef livestock. As time passed, I was appointed by the Board of Directors to be in charge of Booth Rentals renting space to commercial exhibitors. I was elected to the Board of Directors and served in various offices on the Board, being elected President – Fair Manager for the 1986-87 year. I still volunteer at the Fair at the willcall ticket window and look forward to being at the St. Lucie County Fair every year.

Let’s Go Partner The physical benefits of exercise are well documented but have you thought about how exercise can enhance your love life? A 5K race, a yoga class or a workout at the gym may not seem like a romantic outing, but experts agree that couples who exercise together can not only stave off the extra pounds that are often linked to married life, but they can strengthen their relationship and their sex life, and possibly live happily ever after Sweating it out together is a good way to reduce stress in a relationship while also building better communication and common goals. It’s also a great way to enhance what goes on in the bedroom. Exercise definitely enhances the sex life because it reduces stress and increases energy and self -esteem. It’s only logical to assume that as your self- esteem increases,
you will feel more desirable to your partner. Sex hormones like testosterone are naturally elevated by short, intense exercise sessions. A better sex life isn’t the only reason to hit the gym together, couples who do so are more motivated and more committed to staying fit and healthy and keeping each other on track. Couples who exercise together are more likely to stick with an exercise program. The Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness showed that after 12 months, only 6.3 percent of married couples dropped out of their workout routine, while a whopping 43 percent of married singles did. What is another bonus to sweating with your sweetie? It can be a good way to work through any conflicts. When you come away from an exercise session with a renewed sense of strength and control, and you see your partner doing the same thing, it’s easier to look at daily problems as somewhat trivial and unimportant.
Here are five tips to get you started sweating together. 1. Pick a race. Whether it’s a 5K or a marathon, training towards something together can be especially bonding. Even if you aren’t the same speed and running side-byside the whole time, encouraging each other and sharing workouts can be a great way to get in shape and have fun doing it. It is always good to set a goal to achieve together. 2. Don’t compete. Not many couples can—or should—compare and compete. This can create friction between partners. Keep the emphasis on health and not competition. 3. Think outside the box. Working out together doesn’t always have to entail a formal exercise class. Dance, ride bikes, play golf or tennis, or maybe ramp up those long walks on the beach. 4. Respect each other’s likes and dislikes. One of you might like the treadmill while the other wants to lift weights. It’s all about honoring each other’s personal likes and dislikes, instead of trying to force yourselves to do everything exactly the same. Open up to your partner’s interests. Who knows? You may really like golf and he may love zumba.
