Letter from T H E P U B L I S H E R ST. LUCIE

amazement, smiles and laughter. I thank God for the experience and count it as a precious blessing. Sometimes it is hard for us to see what we have actually been blessed with in life. When we get caught up in work, finances, obligations, technology, politics, self-centeredness, and the like, our blessings can get shrouded. Here’s something that I learned in my daily readings that has proven miraculous to overcome being blocked from seeing the light of the spirit; Thank God each day for whatever is preoccupying my mind. By the end of the day the result is amazing peace. Try it. What do you have to lose? “giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” Eph. 5:20 In this Spring Issue, I am pleased to introduce Mike Lewis, I.T. Tech. Mike is the owner of Mike’s Downtown Computer Repair in Ft. Pierce and is now our newest columnist. I have asked and he has agreed to share his computer expertise with you, our readers. I hope you enjoy.

Hello dear readers, Hello Spring & hooray for more hours of daylight! I’ve already been enjoying the singing of the red birds. The extra hours before sunset keep me feeling awake longer while giving me added work, exercise, family/friend and playtime. I give “spring ahead” five stars! Wishing our snowbirds safe travels back north and see Y’ALL on the return! I am excited to share this photo from my first trip to Disney with the love of my life, my granddaughter Olivia. She is almost 2 ½ now! It was an overwhelming joy to share in her If you do not receive or have the time to pick up our magazine please log onto blmmag.com or email us at betterliving@betterliving.com for convenient home delivery.

For the third year, Better Living is proud to sponsor the Bug Guys Charity Golf Tournament for Grace Way Village. Grace Way Village is our feature article and I encourage you to read about their progress and ventures in community outreach. Whether you are a business owner, golfer or volunteer, perhaps you’ll join in. Turn the page to the Contents and see more of what’s here! Wishing a Happy Mother’s Day to all moms and thinking of mine in heaven. Happy Memorial Day and God bless our Vets! May the sun shine on your smile In joy,

The TASTE

Edible Arrangements A visit with Annette and Jeff Greenberg, owners of Edible Arrangements in Prima Vista Crossing, opened my eyes to a world of imaginative gifts featuring their fabulous fresh fruit. These creations are unique and will create cherished memories of your thoughtfulness. All occasions are appropriate: Business, Birthday, Thank You, Get Well, Sympathy, and of course the Holidays. Your edible bouquet will grace your holiday table as a stunning centerpiece, will definitely be a topic of conversation during the meal, and a ready-to-serve delicious after-dinner treat! Annette and Jeff began brightening our days in 2005. They were among the first 200 Edible Arrangements stores to open (now there are over 1000 in the U.S.) so you can count on their expertise and be confident that your gift will be of the highest quality. Fresh is the secret - fruit is whole until ready to be cut for your order. Annette recommends that you call their store directly after exploring the website so they can help you get exactly what you want. Their designers have a new palette of colors available to customize

8

your “swizzles” for the chocolate-dipped fruit – corporate or team colors, mom’s favorite color, pink for breast cancer awareness, etc. Visit them in their new location and see their newest innovation “edible to go” – healthy pick-me-up options including fresh fruit smoothies and Froyo in a cup (vanilla frozen yogurt blended with fruit). In the store you can also pick up gift boxes - created fresh daily - and see their adorable Teddy Bears and specialty items ready to go. These fun and interesting gifts are very popular and Annette and Jeff are busy so especially this holiday season call early to place your order! Delivery is also available from Fort Pierce all the way to Palm City. Community Outreach

G

Grace Way Village is a community outreach organization that has served St. Lucie County residents in need for 9 years. Its mission is to equip under-resourced families with needed clothing for children birth through the age of 18 and to provide the only food kitchen open on the weekend in St. Lucie County. The clothing program, Hope’s Closet, clothed over 3,200 children in 2017. Life skill workshops are offered each Wednesday when Hope’s Closet is open, allowing an opportunity for parents who shop to grow in knowledge that will benefit them. These workshops are always open to the public. The other program, Matthew’s Café, is open for a lite lunch on Wednesday, allowing another benefit to those who shop, as well as being open to the public. Matthew’s Café is also open every Sunday night from 5:00-6:00 p.m. where a hot meal and fresh salad bar is provided to all who walk through the door. Additionally, volunteer teams package up these meals, delivering them to seniors in need who are unable to get to Matthew’s Café. Over 8,400 meals were served thru the café in 2017. All programs at Grace Way Village are free to participants. All services provided by Grace Way Village are free.

The number of residents served through these two programs validate the struggle that so many of our county residents have in making ends meet. A sobering statistic motivates the effort for implementing the next phase of Grace Way Village. There was a 33% increase of children registered through the St. Lucie County public school system as homeless from 2016 to 2017. As of February 14, 2018, there were 1,688 children registered. Add to this the fact that there are no homeless shelters in St. Lucie County. At the inception of Grace Way Village, the second phase was to build a transitional living facility for homeless families. These statistics

verify that the time is now for this phase to be implemented. As much as there is a need for homeless shelters in our county, this facility will focus on providing training, education, workshops, and internships needed for the families to leave employed, self-supporting, and healthy. Families will stay at the facility for 3 to 18 months, depending on what is needed to achieve these goals. Grace Way Village has hosted two Town Hall Meetings for the community to learn about the needs and plans, as well as to offer their input and support. The next Town Hall Meeting will be at Grace Way

Village on Thursday, April 19th, at 11:30 a.m. A lunch buffet will be available, provided by Treasure Coast Hope for the Homeless Foundation. The most up-to-date plans will be shared. All work done at Grace Way Village is dedicated to meeting the needs of the most vulnerable in our community, particularly the children. Through the programs, children are impacted in a positive way; immediately through Hope’s Closet and Matthew’s Café, and in the future, they will receive long-term help through the transitional living facility.

This transitional living facility will be implemented in 5 stages, beginning with a few cottages, and then moving forward with a large communal living facility that will initially house 12 families. Continuing stages will add family units and cottages in order to help meet the needs of our area’s homeless families.

The View 20/20 is Not Perfect Vision

BY LYNNE C. ERBE, O.D.

W

While I was recently a guest speaker on a local talk radio show, a caller wanted to know why an eye exam has not changed. The caller wanted to know why the traditional eye exam doesn’t include technology to test for a burning car a mile away while driving sixty miles per hour. My immediate thought was that would be cool... but ultimately I had to shift gears to address the question. So here’s my answer. Most people would agree that 20/20 is considered perfect vision. In fact it’s only one small part to describe visual acuity (clarity or sharpness of vision). It only means that at twenty feet you would be able to see what another person with normal vision can also see at twenty feet. The reason we use twenty feet is because everything after that is considered “optical infinity”. So let’s take a look at the caller’s scenario. Your driving on the highway in the middle lane and up ahead you see the exit sign you need to take. At this moment you are using your visual acuity to see where you are going. At the same time your also using depth perception to determine how far the cars are in front of you and peripheral vision

www.facebook.com/Dr-Lynne-Erbe www.eyedoctorstlucie.com

to determine the cars beside you. Now it’s time to change lanes. The exit is one mile away. At sixty miles/hr this gives you one minute to get into the proper lane. You quickly check the rear view mirror, which requires change of focus (accommodation) to adjust. You’re sailing along smoothly when the car ahead suddenly swerves in front of you and applies the brakes. At this point your heart is racing but your color vision caught the red brake lights in time to avoid the potential crash. Although a little shaken, you ultimately reach the exit successfully. This scenario answers the callers question but not every skill the eyes can perform. On a daily basis the eyes can also use tracking skills, contrast sensitivity and processing skills like visual memory to interpret the world around us. During a comprehensive exam the doctor will measure and assess your eye skills. Although not glamorous in today’s world of technology... the traditional exam is still an accurate test. Happy driving!

Spring Clean Your Body with Clay

T

This spring would be a great time to give your body a break from the chemicals and toxins that bombard us on an everyday basis. We must start thinking of our bodies as machines that need to be “tuned up” and “cleaned up” every season. Just like we change the oil in the car and the ac filter in our homes our bodies require the same attention. My favorite tool to cleanse with is bentonite clay. I must stress I have been using Sonnes #7 for years and I trust their quality and effectiveness. Bentonite use dates back since primitive tribes have been using volcanic ash to promote their health. Bentonite has the ability to absorb toxins, which can enhance the immune system and detoxify the body without side effects. The basic concept behind bentonite ability to absorb toxins is the large negatively charged particles. These particles attract positively charged particles, which are mainly waste and toxins in the human body. Bentonite can absorb 40x it’s own weight in B A G E L B R O T H E R S O F N Y. C O M

positively charged substances present in the alimentary canal. It is usually taken with warm water in the morning and undiluted before evening meal. My experience has been improved digestion and improved elimination. I try to increase my fiber intake when using bentonite. Some find it helpful consuming fiber powders during bentonite use. I usually use one bottle a few times a year. It is safe to use long term if needed.

Take care when clicking links to videos, which are outside the typical video sites such as YouTube, Vimeo, Hulu, etc. The external sites usually pop up fake messages asking you to upgrade your video player or media player. This is the #1 way malware and viruses get installed onto your computer. These fake upgrade sites usually get into friends Facebook pages through the same manner of them clicking on the very same video links, that’s why these seem to propagate throughout the network quickly and rapidly. Always look for the name of the company in the link you are clicking to upgrade you software. When in doubt go directly to the

website of the product you would like to update. For instance, if you want to safely upgrade your flash player you would go to www.adobe.com. If you happen to click a link and you do not know what to click, I recommend closing the browser using the X in the corner of your browser window. If that does not work turn the computer off using the start button (be sure to save your work before closing). By Mike Lewis Mike’ Computers Downtown Ft. Pierce

Treasure Coast

Black Chamber of Commerce

A

Advocacy, access to capital, business development, contracting and procurement are but a handful of scenarios the Treasure Coast Black Chamber of Commerce (TCBCC) can provide to minority and womenowned businesses in the tri-counties (St Lucie, Martin, and Indian River). Attributes such as these are the true essence of what the TCBCC is all about. Although, the primary focus is the development of minority and women-owned businesses; the TCBCC does business with people of all colors. Moreover, the TCBCC is a resource available to any person or organization who is open to do business with firms in the Treasure Coast.

The Small Business Administration (SBA) has set-aside programs for minority and women-owned businesses that often fall dormant at the state and local levels of government. Unfortunately, most small businesses that fit the criteria are unaware of the programs specifically dedicated to their demographics. In some instances, when set-aside funding goes unused the funding is used for other “pet projects.” This occurs when there are no firm(s) in the pipeline. The TCBCC’s duty is to ensure existing businesses and entrepreneurs are aware that these programs exist. Therefore, having access to an advocate, such as the TCBCC, often reduces the chances of missed opportunities.

In conclusion, minority and womenowned businesses also participate in the economic mainstream that creates sustainable jobs for the local community at-large. Thus, one of the many benefits of joining the TCBCC is the opportunity to meet and network with people of diverse backgrounds, who could potentially aid in expanding the company’s bottom line. To learn more about the TCBCC, please visit www.tcbcc.biz or call (772) 252-1045.

BETTER LIVING & MARKETPLACE MAGAZINE • BLMMAG.COM

Look, I get it by Brant Hansen “Christian radio” is many things, and not all of them great. I’ve worked in different radio formats, but have spent most of my time on Christian pop stations. I’ve seen all the sides of it. I know the artists, the record companies, the other Christian radio hosts, and the listeners. We’re all messed-up in our own uniquely horrible – and wonderful – ways. I can find things to criticize about the industry and, while I’m at it, about myself. But this, at least, is no longer one of those things: Radio songs are somehow “too positive” and too focused on grace, love, joy, light, and mercy. The analytics site fivethirtyeight.com, has this to say, and it’s worth reading. I appreciate the even-handedness of the writer. (I frequent this site for sports math, politics math, and math math.) The writer cites a common complaint: Christian radio just doesn’t have enough about judgment, sin, darkness, death, etc.

Years ago, I made this argument myself. After all, most of the Psalms aren’t overflowing with happy themes. I love theological discussion, and I’m not a particularly emotional person. I fully realize that life includes much suffering. We should expect it. So why doesn’t Christian music on the radio reflect it? Well, here’s an answer: It’s radio. Radio is a particular medium. People use radio, just like they use any tool. It turns out that people on the way home from a tough job do not use the radio to hear a song about sorrow and judgment. (We can foist it on them for their own good, but they have these darn buttons they can click.) And it’s not just the music; there’s plenty I don’t say on the radio, because people listen to the radio a certain way. I know I have to get to the point, and fast. I know I can’t overwhelm people with a lot of numbers while they’re driving. I know I shouldn’t talk about myself for ten straight minutes, because people didn’t turn on my station for that.

B A G E L B R O T H E R S O F N Y. C O M

Should art reflect the whole of life, what it means to be human, what it means to be a fallen creature in a fallen world? Absolutely. Does this mean Christian music radio needs to reflect all of that? No, because it’s used a particular way. One other thing: If you want more songs about judgment, please feel free to write them. Write great ones: Plaintive ones. Profound ones. Poetic ones. Please do it. I’ll listen. But do know that judgment, itself, is not remarkable. The world swims in it. It’s in the moral air we breathe, in and out of church, in every culture, and has been since the Garden of Eden. But grace, well… that’s different. It’s THE difference, actually. Grace is “amazing”, or so I’ve sung. Maybe there’s a reason people are, perhaps, more drawn to that song than any other. And maybe that’s not so bad after all.

Dealing with Difficult People Preparing to transition a business to a family member, partner, or to sell a business is a complicated process that requires long-term strategizing. Whatever the reason for exiting—whether it be retirement or lack of continuing commitment to the company’s growth— business owners need to ask themselves whether they want to sell or transition. The path for each of these is potentially quite different.

Begin with the end in mind The key with any business is to start thinking about selling or transitioning sooner than later.

“Even when you’re just starting a business, think about where you see it ending up,” said Manning Elliott CPA and partner Rick Gendemann. “That will set the roadmap for you to work with.” The more time that is allowed to maximize a company’s value and strengthen its inner management operations, the better financial result for the owner. Contact me for your free consultation. 772-621-0528. bobtbb@gmail.com

Read Entire Article at: https://biv.com/article/2018/02/ top-tips-transitioning-or-selling-business

You can no longer deny it: Difficult people are everywhere, and we need to learn to deal with them. Whether direct reports, or peer managers, difficult people and their frustrating behavior can take numerous forms. Chronic lateness or under performance, irritability with customers, spats between employees, snipping via e-mails, and gossiping around the water cooler count among the more common versions. Persistent negativity — resisting needed change or shooting down new ideas, complaining constantly, and neglecting commitments — can also crop up in some workplaces. The more serious forms of difficult behavior include inappropriate comments from a manager to an employee that verges on harassment, sabotage of company equipment by a laidoff worker, or even physical attacks on others by an irate or disturbed employee. Regardless of the form that difficult behavior takes, it exacts a serious toll on us.

Dealing with difficult people presents unique and daunting challenges for all of us. Problematic behavior stems from complex emotional forces and expresses itself in numerous forms, each of which requires specialize strategies. We all know people whom we find “difficult” in one way or another, and we’re all called upon to deal with them at

34

some time or another. A difficult person may be one who is condescending, argumentative, belligerent, selfish, flippant, obtuse, or simply rude. Difficult people seem to know just how to “push one’s buttons” and stir up trouble. Dealing with difficult people becomes an exercise in patience, love, and grace. In dealing with difficult people, we must guard against pride. It is important to recall the admonition given by the apostle Paul in Romans 12:3: “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you” (see also Philippians 2:3–4). So, when we know we must deal with a difficult person, we approach the situation in meekness. Love is also key: “Love your neighbor as yourself ” (Galatians 5:14). We are to show God’s love to everyone — including difficult people. Dealing with difficult people is unavoidable. When we deal with them, it’s easy to respond in the flesh. But that just brings out the worst in us. How much better to allow our dealings with difficult people to bring out the fruit of the Spirit in us (Galatians 5:22–23)! By the grace of God, may we deal with difficult people in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and — to top it all off — self-control. May we extend the same love, grace, and mercy that God extended to us. And may we be careful not to become the “difficult people” ourselves!
