Letter from T H E

P U B L I S H E R Hello dear readers,

O

ur “New Year” is in full swing. Welcome to the “Sweetheart Issue” of Better Living & Marketplace. In an email that I received, this year was referred to as “Sweet 16”. Yes, I second that notion! The weather alone makes me happy. As I take my evening walks, the brisk air is exhilarating as I stare at the “oh so pretty” sunsets.

This month we celebrate Valentine’s Day (always one of my favorite days). To that, I have included a very special piece written by my Great Aunt Gilda who just turned 85. She is a beautiful woman inside and out. Isn’t it a perfect time to let your family, friend or significant other know that you love them? Don’t want to say it? How about giving one of those little Valentine cards we gave out in elementary school? LOL (laugh out loud) … that could work. Recently I came across the Prayer of St. Francis. Here is a portion: “Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.” As Easter approaches, I shall focus on these things. Are you looking to get involved in community and have some fun? We feature articles on Grace Way Village, Heathcote Botanical Gardens’ Bonsai Ball and the St. Lucie County Fair that may be your cup of tea. There is more, so I hope you’ll take the time to read cover to cover. Even though life is not always a bowl of cherries; Carpe Diem: (Sieze the Day), enjoy special moments and find that “It is better to love than be loved.” With Joy,

Bagel Brothers of New York ~ “It Ain’t The Water”

There’s a thought that NY bagels are the best because of NY water. But one Port St. Lucie businessman tackled the challenge of knocking that notion out of peoples’ heads. He actually shipped some Port St. Lucie water to his father’s bagel shop in Deer Park, Long Island. The customers could not tell the difference AT ALL. And it is that kind of outside-the-box thinking that has made Original Bagel Brothers in Tradition Square such a success. But the retail shop is only the tip of the iceberg for these two entrepreneurs.

Joe Carfino and Jason Dippolito were pals in high school on Long Island. As the years went by, they developed a vision. Tradition Square in Port St. Lucie was the up-and-coming place to be. And so, on December 1, 2006, after signing a ten year lease, the retail store was opened.

Joe Carfino and Jason Dippolito Not only has the store flourished, but Jay and Joe leased warehouse space in St. Lucie West a few years ago so that they would have the room to make their genuine NY bagels. Four million bagels a year! The wholesale bagel business has been unbelievably successful for them. And every morning – very early every morning - trucks leave the warehouse loaded with fresh bagels for local businesses and distributors in Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, and other Florida hot spots. They even ship par-baked/frozen bagel dough out of the country!

The demand is exploding. The warehouse is staffed seven days a week, with 12-14 happy and loyal employees making bagels day and night. The ‘brothers’ are now looking to build a 25k sq. ft. facility here in town to handle the surge. They even hope to offer school tours of their operation. They’re printing bags with custom logos, bar codes, nutrition labels to market their sensational product. They’re catering the construction trade for the new Tradition hospital expansion. And if that weren’t enough, they fill in their spare time with consulting services and demos.

Joe’s enthusiasm and passion are contagious. He says it best: “The day I wake up and don’t want to go to work is the day I sell.” That’s not happening any time soon. Joe and Jay are about to renew their Tradition lease for another ten years. Kudos to them and thank you for what you have given our town.

“realities” behind our neighbors’ doors. Things we take for granted like air conditioning or even electricity they do not have and cannot afford.”

Imagine - not being able to afford to clothe your child in mandatory school attire or having to tape their shoes together . . . Hope’s Closet 4 Children accepts donations of gently used clothes and shoes for ages newborn to 17. Director of Hope’s Closet, Linda Chastain, expresses gratitude for “the generosity of the community in their clothing donations.” (600 to 1000 items of clothing are distributed each week!) Volunteers lovingly sort the donated clothing. “We only distribute clothing that we would want our own children to wear thus anything we can’t use is passed on to other agencies.” After sorting, the clothing is hung on racks in beautifully painted rooms - a rich teal for the teen room and a cheery yellow for the children’s room – presenting a boutique feel for the “shoppers.” All families are referred by local agencies and schools to Hope’s Closet.

Imagine - not being able to feed your children . . . Matthew’s Café serves lunch on Wednesday and dinner on Sunday. Food comes from the Treasure Coast Food Bank as well as donations from food drives, benefits, and corporate sponsors. Sunday dinner gives families a restaurant-style experience and what may be their only hot meal. Volunteer groups serve each week and on 5th Sundays the Board of Directors of Grace Way serves! After the meal families can take home a bag of nonperishable food from the pantry stocked by donations. The cost for Sunday dinner for 100 to 125 people is reasonable at $350. Go online to find out ways to donate. www.gracewayvillage.com.

Imagine - having no hope . . . Getting Ahead in a Just Getting-by World is an 8-week course where attendees are led by two facilitators at Grace Way as they explore their neighborhood and family situations to learn what is holding them back and then are encouraged to set goals. For instance, they learn that things they have been taught are “convenient” are actually predators in their neighborhood like check cashing institutions. After completing the course the ideal progression is to bring the graduate together with an employer who has completed the Saint Lucie County “Bridges Out of Poverty” training workshop. (Learn more at http://www.roundtableslc. com, Roundtable Initiatives). Grace Way also offers workshops weekly on topics like money management and health.

Get Involved with the Inaugural Annual Charity Golf Event United Way is a major source of funding for Grace Way Village but they also need donations from our community. Two of these generous members are Jim Pond and Ken Stanley, Jr., owners of “The Bug Guys.” They are sponsoring their inaugural golf tournament to raise money for Grace Way Village on June 11, 2016. They reached their goal of getting their business to a “solid” point in 5 years and then “do something more” and are asking the same of others - to “pay it forward.” Jim’s heartwarming experiences serving Sunday dinner at Matthew’s Café led them to believe Grace Way is a perfect fit. They are working hard to organize the event. All proceeds directly support Grace Way Village programs with none going towards salary/staff expenses. They anticipate your experience will be so positive that you will say “I want to play every year.” If you’re thinking “I’m not a golfer” - don’t let that stop you from sponsoring a hole or breakfast. And by all means spread the word – you’re sure to know a golfer even if you’re not one! Jim strongly recommends visiting Grace Way Village first-hand to see their wonderful operation and volunteers. “There is nothing like the tour or greeting and getting to know your neighbors by serving dinner on Sunday (4 to 6:30 p.m.) or entertain with your musical talents.” Cathie invites all to contact her to arrange a tour or to find out more about Grace Way Village. To get more information about being a sponsor and/or the golf tournament contact Jim @ jpond@thebugguys.com.

H O L I S T I CHealth Never Give Up

by Joanne Augusto Owner of Nutrition World

It is not uncommon in our society for people to hide in their homes when they’re dieting or starting a health regimen. The thought of being faced with the temptations cripple many of us. I have learned that it is possible to step out into the real world during the journey and remembering it is the journey that matters not just the goal. I have discovered that dating, vacations or even just watching your favorite show has certain built in habits. For me it is alcohol with dates, sugar with vacations and chips with television. Once I identified each habit and the feeling it was giving me I researched healthy alternatives that would give the same feeling. At first it is only natural to be defensive of our unhealthy habits. Just take it one day at a time. The first step in identifying unhealthy habits is make a food journal for ten days. If this seems like a daunting task for you just write the bad stuff down. After ten days highlight all the unhealthy choices. That would be anything with sugar, white flour, fried, and chemicals such as diet food or drinks. Count how many in each category and see which you consumed the least. That would be the first to give up. Most say 21 days does the trick I always say a month to be safe. Not a bite. Continue this with each category. Trust me it is much easier than trying to give up everything at once. If making a choice of what to give up first is difficult let’s just say flour, all flour even organic and gluten free is a great place to start. When your brain thinks it can have other favorites it isn’t as difficult to give up the flour. Remember to drink lots of water, get fresh air and be patient with yourself.

En·cour·age·ment

Encouragement. e action of giving someone support, conndence, or hope; e persuasion to do or to continue something. En-cour-age-ment. .eere’s something about a kind word or sweet compliment that can make a day or even a week. Encouraging people are the easiest to be around, and some consciously choose friends or family to surround themselves with who are more encouraging. We all crave it, but did you know kn we need it?

Studies have show that while emotions such as fear, stress, stress, anger and anxiety narrow individuals’ focus, inhibit their concentration and decrease their cognitive abilities, positive emotions can have an opposite affect.

The Bonsai Ball Heathcote Botanical Gardens rang out 2015 in shining style with their Garden of Lights grand illumination. On weekends from Thanksgiving through New Year’s, the Gardens offered thousands of lights in unique displays. Handcrafted light flowers bordered a twinkling pond on the Main Lawn, while handcrafted butterflies floated around the Reflection Garden. Elegant shapes in the Japanese Garden and Bonsai Gallery were accented with dramatic lighting, and there was a nod to our seaside locale along Treasure Coast

Encouragement causes upbeat thoughts and happiness, which in turn causes increased focus, a less self-centered outlook, and better cognitive performance abilities for demanding tasks. Studies have even shown signiicant impact of physic and exercise abilities can be caused by encouragement, and medical practices are more affective with the use of encouragement on patients.

Encouragement has a huge impact on Encou thoughts, performance, and outlook, so it is important to be surrounded by encouragement. While sometimes it can seem encouraging voices are hard to come by, there is one source of encouragement that has been constant in this community for over 26 years… Christian FM.

Christian FM is a daily source of encouragement for thousands of lives, and the family at Christian FM wants to be your daily source of encouragement. Tune into 96.3 to hear encouraging songs about your worth and purpose, and share time with fellow mothers and fathers who fail daily, but nd encouragement together. Turn your day around on 96.3 today.

Way. Gigantic Heathcote the Bear served as a friendly mascot where guests could snap unique photos. Kids loved Santa’s Village, where the Jolly Old Elf was often found. Kids of all ages roasted marshmallows at the S’mores Station to create their own treats. The 2nd Street Bistro food truck offered more substantial fare. Such a huge undertaking could never have happened without a cadre of dedicated volunteers. Thanks go to each of them, as well as the generous event sponsors. Heathcote offers a special public thank-you to Mayor Linda Hudson, of Fort Pierce, and Mayor Greg Oravec, of Port St. Lucie, for their support, and to the Fort Pierce Police Department for their extra patrols. Thanks also go to the Florida Department of Transportation for providing great road signs on US 1. As Heathcote rang in the New Year, there was much to celebrate because 2016 is the 30th anniversary year of the Gardens. The first major event is the Sixth Annual Bonsai Ball. Mark your calendars for this colorful evening on March 19, from 5 – 9 pm. Join us for Asian cuisine, music by the Takai Drummers, live and silent auctions of special treasures, and – of course – strolls along Heathcote’s lovely paths. The Bonsai Ball helps to maintain the amazing James J. Smith Bonsai Gallery where over 100 tropical bonsai are on public display. Volunteers are the lifeblood of Heathcote. From the Desk of Bob Leone Business Broker

Sellers Guide Our Proven 5-Step Process Our objective is to conndentially sell your business, together with its assets, inventory and real estate, in the shortest amount of time, at the best possible price and terms, and with the least amount of inconvenience. Acquisition Experts uses a proven 5-Step Process to procure a Buyer for your business and close the sale: STEP 1 – VALUATION I will give you an opinion of value based on my 9 years experience in the South Florida marketplace. Business valuations are based on assets, inventory at Seller’s cost and “Owner’s Beneet” (or discretionary cash ow), which is comprised of the corporation’s net income plus owner’s salary, interest expense, depreciation, discretionary expenses and other personal “perks” paid by the business. e “goodwill” of your business, the value above and beyond the physical asset value, is generally based on a multiple of Owner’s Beneet that varies according to business type and industry.

A BETTER WAY Matters

TO HEALTH 1605 NW Federal Hwy., Stuart, FL 34994, 772-398-4550

of the heart

The philosophy of Chinese medicine in regard to emotions, places more importance on a disruption in the patients Organ balance from improper diet, poor lifestyle habits, the environment, or any toxins. The belief is that even an excess display or a lack of emotion may lead to dis-ease in the body. It is the disruption of blood flow or vital life force called Qi (pronounced ‘chee’) in the Organ that causes the emotion. This is similar to a kink in a garden hose that prevents water from sustaining a garden.

What if I told you that all emotions flowed from the Heart and not the mind? Western conby Dr. Stuart Shipe, temporary medicine is DAOM, MS, RPh always trying to find which brain chemical is deficient that causes the emotions of depression, anxiety, anger, worry, or hyperactivity. This philosophy in Chinese medicine is called “chasing the dragon’s tail.” In other words, always trying to supplement chemicals or hormones to artificially provide for that which the body is seemingly deficient of. Patients end up having to rely on these medications to mask their emotional imbalances. When they try and discontinue the medication, the negative effects that are felt further support their continued drug dependence.

An abstract emotion called “Shen,” resides in the Heart. It is said to be one of three treasures we possess. Shen is found in individuals with characteristics of inner mental calmness, uncluttered thought, and good focus. An unbalanced Heart caused from stress and the factors mentioned previously can disrupt this mental ease leading to insomnia and emotional outbursts. An excess display of emotion can unbalance the Organs and conversely, an unbalanced Organ promotes the display of various associated emotions. Checking the balance of these Organs has been the practice of Chinese physicians for thousands of years. To find the root source of the problem, Chinese doctors rely on natural diagnostic means involving palpating, observing, questioning, and using any of their senses to discern clues. Getting to the Heart of the matter, I would encourage you to get your body checked out to determine what balance your Organs are in.

Q: How can Chiropractic help me? A: Chiropractic can assist you by maintaining your spine’s proper alignment. Every organ in the body is under some kind of neurological (nerve) control. So doesn’t it seem sensible that when the nerve impulses are compromised by misalignments, the nerve ow is altered, and your body doesn’t function at its optimal level? Q: What is an adjustment? A: An adjustment is a gentle correction of a mis-aligned joint that relieves pressure on nearby nerves and help restore proper movement into that joint.

With Love from Aunt Gilda Financial Planning is not an event, but rather a process. During our lifetime, we are constantly in the process of making, managing, investing, and spending money. More often than not, we make our way through day-to-day, without taking the time to either plan or coordinate our financial affairs. Financial issues, problems, and decisions are addressed as they arise. Many people, who would not dream of beginning a cross-country trip without a GPS or at least a good atlas, never even consider the importance of having a financial road map during the many years they will earn and spend money. Without an adequate map, they are unlikely to reach a destination of financial security. The financial planning process should produce that financial road map.

Love Day, February 14 As we approach Valentine’s Day, urgent thoughts and feelings coming forcibly to the fore. The look of love, the feelings of love, embraceable you, and close to you, and many many more pleasing and satisfying songs of old music to our ears, no bore. Youths make such a game of it; it puts them on a high level or awareness, a loving way to be cute, coy and kissable and certainly adding much shy levity. While the older and the elderly respect this special date, they have known true love for quite some time; they do not obviate, but do appreciate.

As with any map, you can’t decide how to get where you are going without knowing where you are. Effective financial planning begins with a clear understanding of where you are financially. This understanding is derived from information your financial professional should ask you to provide. The information can be qualitative, such as your risk tolerance or how you may feel about providing for family members or charity. The information can also be quantitative (the financial facts). The facts may include your estate planning documents (wills, trusts, powers of attorney), personal financial statements, budgets, retirement plans/ brokerage accounts/outside account statements, insurance policies, and income tax returns.

So, young or old let’s focus ourselves on a happy lovable day to reinforce our true spirits, and deep down feelings of warmth. Shared loving togetherness for the sake of those we cherish and care about with the very slightest hints to palpitate. ENJOY!

St. Lucie County Fair is almost here! The first St. Lucie County Fair was held in 1966. The ten-day event was designated to start on the last Friday of February, each year. The 2016 Fair begins on Friday, February 26 and runs through Sunday, March 6. The Fair was originally held next to the St. Lucie County Airport. Then in 1999, the Fair Association purchased 250 acres at the intersection of Midway Road and Okeechobee Road for the new fairgrounds. In 2003, the Fair Association moved the SLC Fair to its permanent home. Upon completion it will be the second largest fairgrounds in the state of Florida. The Fair is filled with great family fun and outstanding entertainment. It all starts with thrilling rides on the midway. The annual petting zoo, livestock show, arts and crafts, school displays, racing pigs, demolition derby, rodeo, amazing food, live entertainment and so much more, fill the fairgrounds each year. The St. Lucie County Fair has always been extremely proud of the youth exhibits held each year at the fair. The market steer and swine auctions have received state recognition. The record held for top price for steers is owned by Ryan Holley at $10.50 per lb. in 2004. Evan Miller (2004) owns the record held for top price on the swine at $42.00 per lb., which is also a state record. Youth exhibits include sewing, food, knitting, quilting, wood working, small animals, large animals and a multitude of educational projects. The St. Lucie County Fair has featured some of the country’s top headliners, including: Trace Adkins, Toby Keith, Montgomery Gentry, Loretta Lynn, Billy Ray Cyrus, Jake Owen, John Anderson, Charlie Daniels, 38 Special, The Guess Who, Kellie Pickler, Little Jimmy Dickens and Tracy Byrd to name a few. These talented artists have brought fair crowds to their feet with their incredible performances. The St. Lucie County Fair has grown to be the largest annual event on the Treasure Coast with almost 140,000 paid attendees in 2014. Every day there is something new and exciting happening at the Fair. New attractions include: the first annual youth Goat Show, the World of Recycling, Jurassic Park Comes Alive, Island Steel Drum Band, The Transformer, Sega the Robot, Buford the Bear and Laser Tag. The PRCA Wide Open Rodeo is opening weekend, Hairball returns March 4 and the Demo Derby is March 5. The World Class Midway is open all 10-days!
