utumn has officially begun - the snowbirds are returning! It seems like I have just blinked and the end of the year is nearly here. How is it that time moves so quickly the older we get?... Hmmm. I have learned to enjoy life better when I stay in today. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” Matt: 6-34

This time last year I shared with you that I was expecting my first grandchild. On 11/11 Olivia turns One! Her smile lights up my universe! The fact that she was born on Veteran’s Day is gratitude magnified. It seems like yesterday that my son was in the Middle East serving our country. This is what I call blessings of abundance! I am ever grateful to every Veteran, and I pray “God keep them safe”. On page 31, in honor of our Vets, I have shared a personal treasure. It is a poem, so to speak, that my father wrote while in Okinawa serving in WWII.

Children Are Our Future In Retirement, Finding a Different Type of Purpose

ike all who arrive at retirement’s gate, I was handed a blank slate on which to design a new life and quickly learned that the freedom, which comes with having more time than responsibility, can be sobering and intimidating. Questions abounded. What should be the goal of retirement? How would mine look in hindsight? Could I live it with fulfillment rather than regret? What shiny new purpose would replace the pursuit of security? I found my different type of purpose by more closely examining what has long been my greatest conviction, and then acting on it. And that conviction is this: all children arrive in this world innocent and blameless, dependent, precious, and deserving of love, encouragement, and opportunity. Not some, all. But all are not so fortunate, are they? I was one of the lucky ones; born to parents who wanted

me, loved me unconditionally, exalted and reveled in my achievements, and did everything they could, without envy, to encourage my success. Would they have sacrificed their lives for me? I am quite certain they would. And I am profoundly humbled to know that I have never known even one moment when I was left to wonder whether anyone out there really cared. But again, it didn’t have to be that way and all too often, it isn’t. It’s been said that for a child, feeling unloved is worse than monsters under the bed, and that for any of us raised in a loving, stable home the concept of a child needing someone other than his or her parents to speak for them is almost incomprehensible. Yet practically every day here in Florida, another child or sibling group is added to the more than 29,000 already removed from their parents for their own protection and placed under the supervision of the Department of Children and

Families. And what’s worse, whether they’ve suffered abuse, abandonment, or neglect, is that when the monsters under the bed are their own parents, these kids feel that it is they, and not their parents, who are at fault. Ouch. A judge who saw that all parties in his courtroom had an advocate or a voice except the one most innocent, yet most affected by the outcome - the child, started the Guardian ad Litem Program. Today in our four-county judicial circuit, there are over 300 Guardians protecting the interests of over 800 children. Sadly, another 300 kids are still in immediate need of someone who will stand up for them. It is often the volunteer Guardian’s voice that resonates most loudly with the presiding judge. These cases require no special education other than the 30 hours of certification training provided by the program, plus about 10-15 hours per month for a typical case. But with that and a compassionate heart, congratulations, you qualify. The success stories are legion; the rewards can be extraordinary. Somewhere out there, today, is a child who has perhaps never been to a doctor or dentist, who has been placed,

afraid, in unfamiliar surroundings, who has almost given up academically, or who has no one to make that critical difference in their young life. And while none of us can change the world, we can all change the world of one child. It’s happening every day. The Guardian ad Litem office, in Port St. Lucie, can be reached at 772-785-5804. A request for more information is taken as just that, not as a commitment. But as one former victim - and now herself a Guardian - put it, “If you’re thinking about doing it – do it. If you have the time that you can put into being a child’s guardian ad Litem, do it. Because you have the opportunity to dramatically change a child’s life. Roseann Gregory Cancer Foundation MAKING A DIFFERENCE!

he Roseann Gregory Cancer Foundation (RGCF), will be hosting Harvest Wine & Dine at Tutto Fresco on October 10, 2016 from 6pm-9pm. Tickets are on sale at www.roseanngregory.org, Vivid Hair Salon and Tutto Fresco. “This will be a fun evening, for a great cause,” stated Mary Freitas, Founder and President. Founded in 2011 with the purpose of increasing awareness about cancer, its treatment options and prevention while supporting local cancer patients, they have donated more than $92,000 back to the community. They accomplished this in part through their Indian River State College scholarship fund, which supports students impacted by cancer. They also support local research, such as Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute’s cancer biology program and cancer patients through proceeds donated to Martin Health Foundation, The HANDS Clinic St. Lucie County, Maddie’s Fight and Windsor Imaging. RGCF believe that by working with other organizations, they can maximize their contribution and play a vital part in ending cancer and its devastation. That is why when Mary Freitas, heard that Windsor Imagining was in need of funds to help 70 women get mammograms, she quickly jumped into action and within the hour the board voted to donate $5,000. “It is important to join our efforts with others in the community,” stated Mary Freitas. “The more we work together, the greater the impact we will have.” The Roseann Gregory Cancer Foundation is a local 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization.

If you were lucky enough to have homemade soup growing up you probably would remember the wonderful smell of the stock that was used as the base. Even in my brief vegetarian days I craved homemade soup when I wasn’t feeling well. Even hot broth did the trick for everything that would bother me. So where is the magic in this broth, could that old wise tale of chicken soup curing everything have some merit? In the last two years social media has been abuzz with the talk of bone broth. I took a back seat to learn if there was any stock (LOL) in what they were saying. Luckily my research wasn’t a waste of time. Not only am I convinced but I do 8oz a day myself. Bone broth is not your everyday soup stock. If done correctly you choose the best quality bones available, grass fed, free range and organic ingredients. The best broth is slowly simmered up to 48 hours to get all the best from the bones. Afterward seasoning and or veggies are added. I love adding fresh greens and seaweed to mine. Paws Fur Recovery is a new non-profit founded by Lori Boettger. The organization joins people recovering from addictions with animals in the Humane Society’s care. Their mission statement is, ‘Paying Forward Second Chances.’ “It made sense to do this because people in recovery often feel abandoned and unwanted by society and so do these dogs,” Boettger said. “Prior training is provided to handle the animals and then we volunteer in various ways, like getting them out for walks during the week and showing love. Many dogs need to regain trust in humans.”
