Letter from P U B L I S H E R Hello dear readers,

H

appy August! I think most will agree that the heat and humidity has been a little over the top, even for Florida. Looking on the bright side, this is the time of year many of us take vacation. Hopefully that is you, and if not, let’s just call having AC a “Staycation”. One thing that I have been truly enjoying this time of year is watching the deep pink colored Roseate Spoonbills, Wood Storks and Blue Herons. They are magnificent.

That brings to mind how much they and we depend on healthy waters. My hope is for a solution to heal and correct the pollutants affecting our “ecological jewel”, the St. Lucie River and each of the impacted waterways. We have many challenges in today’s world and there is much going on all around us. I decided to have a chat with my pastor a few days ago about the chaos, discord and heartbreaking worldly events. This is just a clip of what he shared: “When the foundations are shaking and you wish you could hide, remember that God is still in control. His power is not diminished by any form of events.” If we choose, we can apply this to anything in our lives. Thanks Pastor Mike!

“He’s an impressive man.” So said an attendee at a recent homeowner’s association meeting at which Sheriff Ken Mascara was speaking. “Articulate, smart and a straightshooter,” the resident continued. St. Lucie County Sheriff Mascara has an impressive record as well. From the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01 through today, he has consistently partnered with federal and state authorities to provide the maximum safety and security for our county’s residents. He was there for us when Hurricanes Frances, Jeanne and Wilma hit. He was there solving the quadruple homicides back in 2006 along the Florida Turnpike here in our county. He took the task force lead back in 2007-2008, arresting more than 80 child sexual predators. He heard the plight of hundreds of our most vulnerable residents investigating and shutting down a sophisticated identity theft ring.

The bogus animal shelter exposed for their dog abuse and embezzlement in 2011? Sheriff Ken Mascara. The meth lab busts – over a dozen in 2012? Sheriff Ken Mascara. The domestic violence murderers prosecuted and jailed in 2014? Sheriff Ken Mascara. Remember the abducted teen “Ricky” in 2015? Sheriff Ken Mascara found him in Orange County and brought him home quickly and safely. Crime is down in St. Lucie County nearly 30% since he took office. He has done all of this while consistently keeping his budgets under control, always spending your tax dollars wisely. These are the results you can expect with Sheriff Ken Mascara’s leadership. Yes, he is an impressive man. He is professional, ethical and committed to the highest standards of conduct for himself and his deputies. A vote for Ken Mascara is a vote for the positive future and by Joanna Johnson continued security of St. Lucie County.

Andersons ARMY W

hile new initiatives in the fight against cancer are beginning worked on, a Port St. Lucie woman has just returned from the front lines in the battle to cure cancer with some hopeful news. Judy Perkins Anderson has had Stage 4 breast cancer since August 2013. She was originally diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 and had a mastectomy. Since she became metastatic, in the last 2-1/2 years, she has been through numerous treatments including several different hormonal therapies, chemotherapies and targeted therapies. Last summer, with treatment options running out, she found out about a clinical trial at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD. The trial, “Immunotherapy Using Tumor Infiltrating Lymphocytes for Patients with Metastatic Cancer”, builds on existing immunotherapy that has already

shown success with melanoma patients. This trial expands the patient population to include people with other cancers with solid metastatic tumors. The theory behind this treatment is that part of our immune system is still trying to fight the cancer. However, most of our immune system no longer recognizes the cancer as an enemy and is no longer trying to attack it. Tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) are white blood cells (WBCs) that have penetrated the tumor and are trying to fight the cancer. They are a small minority of the WBCs in our bodies and do not have sufficient numbers to effectively fight the cancer. In Mrs. Anderson’s case, she had a tumor removed in August 2015 to potentially develop her treatment. Her tu-

mor was cut into 24 pieces and the TIL were watched to see if any of them would attack the cancer. In four of the 24 pieces, activity was seen. Subsequently, the active TIL from these four tumor pieces were grown up into an army of about 80 billion T-cells focused only on killing her cancer. This “selective TIL treatment” was ready for Mrs. Anderson just before Christmas in December 2015. Prior to receiving her “TIL army” as Mrs. Anderson calls it, she was given high dose chemotherapy that killed all the other WBCs in her system. This way, when the selective TIL treatment was infused, the only target was the cancer cells. With time, her bone marrow will regenerate the other WBCs, which are an integral part of our normal immunity that fights infections and disease.

Lynne C. Erbe O.D.

Mrs. Anderson returned home on New Year’s Day 2016 and has been recovering from the TIL treatment which can be, in her words, “a grueling affair”. Amazingly, she reports that more than half a dozen tumors that she could feel in her chest have “melted away”. She has stopped all pain meds that she had been taking to control the pain from the cancer. Her doctors at NIH are already very optimistic saying that such a rapid response is unusual. Mrs. Anderson will get scans in early February that will confirm what she already knows, that she is heading for a remission. How long it will last, remains to be seen. But, for other patients that have responded, sometimes the remissions have lasted a long time. Until there is evidence to the contrary, Mrs. Anderson is resuming life without cancer and beginning once again to plan for the future.

Owners/managers and sisters Tj and Carrol Ann serve up cooked-to-order breakfasts, lunches and baked goods in a warm and down-home atmosphere. Homemade corned beef hash, cast-iron open-faced frittatas, Western, Mexican and Greek omelets, challah bread or cinnamon and raisin French toast, and buttermilk pancakes will surely start your day off right. s the sun was battling with the storm clouds for dominance of the sky, excited Grace Way Village volunteers set up for the arrival of the golfers. It was exhilarating watching all the golf carts head out to the green! Moods were high, thankful that the threatening storm lost to the sun, allowing for a surprising low humidity day. The abundance of raffles allowed for a lot of fun as all entered the clubhouse for lunch and a cold drink. Jim Pond, co-owner of the bug guys, welcomed and thanked all for coming out to support the work of Grace Way Village through its programs: Hope’s Closet 4 Children, Matthew’s Café, and Getting Ahead. Cathie Mouring, Executive Director of Grace Way Village, repeated the thanks, as well as thanking the hosting entity of the tournament, the Bug Guys, and the team of volunteers that put it all together. Impressive facts were shared regarding the work that was being done, as wellas the continual need for donations of children and teen clothing, nonperishable food, and volunteers. The sharing of a few client stories emphasized the importance of the work, supported by fundraisers such as this, as well as financial donations from

Ashley’s VOICE

by Julie White

I

f you’re lucky you have not known anyone personally who has committed suicide, but more likely you have had a relative or friend take their own life, have known of friends of friends, and you’ve heard others who have talked about it. You experienced the full spectrum of emotions – shock that they are gone, sadness and disbelief as you realize you are not going to see them or talk to them again, then questions - What role did I play? What could I have done better? Did I tell them why I love them, why I need them, why I want them to be around? Lisa Pettey-Coogan has a powerful message – hopefully making these questions unnecessary. She speaks out for suicide awareness and prevention. “This is something that is near and dear to my heart and needs all the attention. It is so very important that people become more aware of what

is happening around us and try to make a difference.” One key way she does this is promoting the Out of the Darkness Walks for suicide awareness organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Suicide prevention doesn’t get anywhere near the funding given to other leading causes of death. By registering for the walk or making a donation you can join the cause to change the conversation about mental health and put a stop to this tragic loss of life. The Port St. Lucie Community Walk is coming up this fall on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at 9 a.m. Please visit http://afsp.donordrive.com/ to register and donate. Lisa, whose daughter Ashley committed suicide three years ago at the age of 30, also reaches out to the communi-

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month ty in her movement to prevent suicide. “I want to tell people my story and be very open in talking about how families are destroyed. After losing my daughter to suicide, I gave up for a long time and then I realized - Ashley wouldn’t want me to do that. After a year of not working I decided to get involved by speaking up.” Lisa has “probably talked to 1000 people in the last two years and what I hear is “This is the only way out” or “I wanted to make it all go away.” But, Lisa emphasizes, “I truly believe that there is a moment of clarity where they think they do not want to do it.” Lisa relates how her story touched one of her listeners. “After hearing me speak about life without Ashley, how hard her birthdays are, spending Mother’s Day missing her, being sad at Christmas, and explaining that it is 10 times harder to go on living without her, this young woman told me that for the first time she realized she hadn’t thought of what it would be like for her family and that she could see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.” Lisa’s is also creating Ashley’s Voice Foundation with one of her goals being to travel around the country visiting schools “speaking for Ashley since she can’t.” “People don’t like to say the word ‘suicide’. I am open and honest about what happened. I know of two kids I have saved – after listening to my story they got themselves to clinics where they could get needed medical attention and also express their feelings and work through them.”

are not getting enough sleep, they may be using alcohol or drugs, the may have struggles with depression or being bullied. Whatever the reason, the feelings are overwhelming and confusing. They may feel like they have nowhere to go to talk to anyone and are afraid to talk to their parents. Signs to watch for, not just in teens but anyone, are: not getting dressed or showering, not eating, they won’t leave their room, withdrawing from others, losing interest in things that were previously important to them. We need to keep our antennas up and watch out for each other. When suicide feels like the perfect solution and “no one will miss me” what can you do? Lisa explains: “Communication is the first step. Be open and extremely honest, ask why, what is so terrible? Make them open up – don’t just brush it off. Let them know “You can tell me anything even if it is scary”. Realize that they need to trust one person and it may not be you. Emphasize “you will be missed – you are important!” To lend your support to this vital cause and help Lisa with her mission, mark your calendars now for Saturday, November 5, 2016, for The Port St. Lucie Community Walk. If you can’t walk please donate. Go to http://afsp. donordrive.com/ for all the details.

Another goal is to improve the availability of support. Lisa describes the situation she faced: “I tried to link up with other parents – there are so many more than you would ever think – but there are NOT enough support groups and the groups that are available are either far away or meet seldom (once a month). Unfortunately, suicide-related support pales in comparison to support for those struggling with drug and alcohol addiction.” Lisa understands “parents are terrified. It is hard to believe it is happening to their child.” What is happening? Something is causing unclear thinking - a medication they are taking might be incorrect or they aren’t taking it correctly, they

Summertime relaxation is almost over and school is back in session. It would be wise to incorporate a few simple things right away to avoid feeling stressed, especially when getting ready in the mornings. Parents and children should plan a few good habits and be consistent with these routines until it becomes normal to everyone. During summer, families have generally relaxed their sleep and wake patterns. Now adults and children should reset into a more structured bedtime. Young or old when we are tired, normal daily activities can quickly unravel into outbursts of frustration. This has an undesirable effect and can hinder a child’s readiness to learn. Everyone – including teachers – should get plenty of rest to avoid problems arising due to lack of sleep. Studies show most people move about 30 percent slower after waking, so it makes sense to prepare whatever possible the night before. Try incorporating a few after dinner routines on school nights even though you may be tired from a long day. Give children a list of specific tasks to prepare for morning. Have them choose what to eat for breakfast and set the table. Prepare school lunches and snacks. Children can get their own book bag ready at night and put it near their shoes. Let them choose and try on clothes the night before to ensure they like how it looks and feels. Don’t forget to check the weather channel. Set alarms to allow enough time for everyone to get ready. To avoid derailing your schedule, parents and children should make a rule not to check emails or go online before leaving for school. Try a few little changes to bring more peace and happiness into your back to school routine.

“As school begins, we are seeking to begin the process of filling each of our Grace Packs schools' pantries and letting our community know the need and how helpful they can be!” Laura Klosterman

“THE FACE OF HUNGER” The current child food insecurity statistics for St Lucie County reveal that 26.1% of our children (or 15,970 kids) do not know from where their next meal will come. This research is based on "Map the Meal Gap 2016: Food Insecurity and Child Food Insecurity Estimates at the County Level", supported by the Howard G Buffett Foundation and The Nielson Company. The mission and joy of Grace Packs, Inc. is to provide weekly weekend food for students

who lack an ample food supply, relieving the burden many of these children endure by being hungry. Our goal is to furnish breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack items at the end of each school week to students who may be suffering from food insecurity. We are pleased that our program continues to grow, and we are currently assisting students affected by hunger in fifteen schools.

Coconut Oil

and its Amazing Uses

I absolutely love coconut oil, even when the media and good intentioned dieticians were telling us that all Fat was bad I knew it could not be true. Luckily the truth about fat is common knowledge now, I just hope it’s not too late. So just to be clear not all fat is bad! Unfortunately what manufacturers do to these healthy fats is another matter. Coconut oil is loaded with saturated fats, which actually do not harm the blood lipid profile like previously thought. After reading this article I am hoping that you will be jumping into your car to get some coconut oil. Please, please make sure your oil fits this profile so you will receive all the amazing benefits coconut oil has to offer. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

ORGANIC RAW UNREFINED NOT HYDROGENATED NO BLEACHING NOT DEODORIZED EXTRA VIRGIN

I was saddened to see many well-known companies guilty of the above practices to cut costs and be supposedly more consumer friendly. One company said there customers didn’t like the smell of coconut oil so the bleaching and deodorizing was necessary. I hope all my readers would be willing to get through a pleasant smell to reap the rewards! The first benefit that is not usually written about is how coconut oil kills bad things in your body like bacteria and viruses. Now you may think these only interfere in your day to day life when you’re sick but they can create many of your daily symptoms that you’re suffering with. When coconut oil is enzymatically digested, it also forms a monoglyceride called monolaurin. Both lauric acid and monolaurin can kill harmful pathogens like bacteria, viruses and fungi.

B A G E L B R O T H E R S O F N Y. C O M

For example, these substances have been shown to kill the bacteria Staphylococcus Aureus (a very dangerous pathogen) and the yeast Candida Albicans, a common source of yeast infections in humans. I have seen Candida create havoc in many people’s lives, from headaches, sugar craving and depression just to name a few. When our bodies are out of balance constant hunger, especially for the wrong types of food can be a huge problem. Coconut oil can stop that feeling. I am experimenting with this one myself. If you consume three tablespoons throughout the day not only does it show to reduce hunger but also decrease your waistline. I enjoy mixed into my shakes but many customers enjoy it in their coffee, spread on sprouted bread or right off a spoon. Given that coconut oil can reduce appetite and increase fat burning, it makes sense that it can also help you lose weight. Coconut oil appears to be especially effective in reducing abdominal weight which lodges in the abdominal cavity and around organs. This is the most dangerous fat of all and is highly associated with many Western diseases. This may be related to the way the fatty acids in it are metabolized, because ketone bodies can have an appetite reducing effect. These are just a few reasons to add coconut oil to your diet. There are so many more! Please spend some time learning about coconut oil you won’t regret it. If you have coco nut oil at home that isn’t good enough to ingest it makes a great base for a sugar or sa lt body scrub.

ince June, Treasure Coast families have been participating with Christian FM in the greatest summer radio event in the area - The Great Treasure Hunt. If you’ve ever wondered why they call this the Treasure Coast, this was your chance to get up close and personal with the dramatic history of our coastline. It all started in July 1715 when a fleet of twelve Spanish ships left Havana for the long voyage back to Spain. They were loaded down with silver, gold, and all manner of precious jewels. But… they didn’t get very far. Right along our coast, they encountered the raging winds and pounding waves of a hurricane! All but one of the ships was lost, and the precious cargo spilled onto the ocean floor. However, in 1948, a man strolling the beaches near Sebastian Inlet found several gold coins and set off a series of treasure hunting adventures that continue today. Thousands of our listeners registered to hunt, followed the clues and rolled up their sleeves to unearth seven hidden keys. And one will win a mother load of real Spanish

treasure from our partner West Bay Trading Company who has stepped alongside to make this educational event a possibility once again. Christian FM is so grateful for our amazing business partners, our inspiring on-air personalities, and Christian artists that supply the uplifting tunes you sing along with every day. You’ll get a chance to worship with these great artists in person through our Night of Joy and Rock the Universe giveaways. These concerts, held at Disney and Universal Orlando respectively are coming up in the fall, and we can’t wait to worship with our listeners at the theme parks. We hope this summer was a great time of creating memories with your loved ones, keeping that summer brain sharp, and having an overall fun time. Although searching for “treasure” is fun, we hope you’re reminded that real, lasting treasure is less tangible. Our hope and the greatest gift in our lives are the promises of Jesus and the everlasting life he offers to all who believe.
