t’s back. Holiday time. But something is a little different this year. 2020 baby, it’s a new decade! I can remember, many years ago when I used to think, “How old will I be in the year 2020?” Surely I can tell you that I thought, “I will be old.” And certainly not thinking of how wonderful it would be to be a young grandma, “oh what fun.” Of course we all know now, that 50 is the new 30 anyway (hee hee). All in all, I am excited for the New Year ahead. What a great time to celebrate life, and organize clutter between the ears. 2020 poses inspiration to begin anew, learning from our hindsight. I love to take time between Christmas and New Year to search my heart and refresh my intentions. Because of my built-in forgetter, I again remind myself, “To thine own self be true!”
If you’ve been a reader for awhile, you may recall our article on PATCHES, PPEC from a few years ago. I am truly honored to feature them and the children for Christmas this year. Please take a moment to get acquainted. I am deeply appreciative of the sponsors who have donated for their Christmas celebration. You light up their lives!

“It’s Never Too Late for a New Beginning”
H
ere we are going into another New Year. The older I get the faster time seems to go by. The New Year always brings in the opportunity to make New Year Resolutions. This year I am going to _________” or “This year I am going to stop _______” You can fill in the blanks. And of course we all know that most New Year Resolutions fail to be fulfilled. That doesn’t stop us from making them. Our hearts want to do this or that but somewhere life gets in the way and we get side tracked. I know I will be making a couple of New Year Resolutions this coming New Year’s Eve. I believe it is “Never Too Late for a New Beginning”. If there’s one thing that I’ve learned in all of my years of recovery it is this: “If Nothing Changes, Nothing Changes”. Another little cliché I am reminded of is: “If I want to change a thought, I need to move a muscle”. It seems that New Year’s Eve is the time we all become aware that some changes may be needed if we are going to improve in some area of our lives. I’ve been reading some great books by John Maxwell, “How Successful People Think” / “3 Things Successful People Do” and of course the one I liked the best was “Be All You Can Be”. One thing all three of these books had in common was that the Best Book I could read for self-improvement was “The Good Book”. In that book I am reminded that I am not perfect and I never will be, I am a work in progress and I am constantly changing in a changing world. So where am I going with all of this? I guess I want everyone to know that it’s ok to make New Year resolutions and that it takes commitment and sacrifice to accomplish them, and like someone said, “It’s better to have tried and failed than to not have tried at all”. The words “Fear Not” are mentioned 365 times in the Bible, one for each day of the year. I know God is watching over us and wants us to know He has a plan and purpose for each and every one of us. I look forward to this coming New Year with great anticipation to see what God has in store for all of us as we seek His guidance and wisdom. Happy New Year everyone and God Bless you all. Where Miracles Happen his is the wish of Angelia Stokes, the new acting Director of Nursing, and PATCHES staff in Fort Pierce. Celebrating Christmas with the children is the event. The week before Christmas, PATCHES will have a special day for the children. We can help make this a joyous occasion with our donations of toys and supplies for the celebration and for the children to take home. Their excitement is contagious as they “celebrate every holiday as if it is your last.” Celebrating the holidays helps PATCHES make the children feel special. But beyond the holidays every single day the nursing personnel and therapists at PATCHES emphasize enjoying every moment with the children. PATCHES is not a daycare needing toys for the children - they are a skilled nursing center providing specialty care for children, ages birth to 21 years old, who have extraordinary medical conditions. PATCHES stands for Pediatric Alternative Treatment, Care, Housing & Evaluation Services. It is a PPEC, which means Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care. This means that nursing personnel and therapists provide ongoing specialty care which helps these children stay out of the hospital or lessen their hospital stays and reduce emergency room visits. ithout PATCHES right here in St. Lucie County, families would have to travel to Miami or Gainesville for infusions or other treatment. The nearest children’s hospital is St. Mary’s in West Palm Beach. PATCHES is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization and is only funded through individual donations. They are a Medicaid fee-forservice health care facility. It is the only non-profit PPEC’s in St Lucie County. Chronically ill children come daily to PATCHES to receive specialty nursing care for medical conditions like complications from premature birth, open heart surgery, birth defects, and genetic disorders, to name a few. Usually more than one system in the body is affected. Multiple surgeries can result in development delay and they are at a high risk of developing infection. They may need tube feeding, have IVs, infusion ports or tracheostomies. Children with chronic illnesses may be non-ambulatory and/or nonverbal. These conditions are usually permanent. PATCHES delivers medically-necessary nursing care for any child, regardless of the ability of their family to pay. Think of PATCHES as a home health/hospital combo. When you enter PATCHES you immediately feel the love the children receive in this beautiful facility. It is very organized, clean, and a warm feeling envelops you when you realize how much the nursing personnel care for and love their jobs. All staff are medical professionals – RN’s, LPN’s CNA’s, EMTs, and therapists - highly skilled pediatric healthcare professionals, sharing their training and knowledge to make every day a bright one for the children. PATCHES is open 12 hours daily, five days a week. Vital signs are taken every morning upon arrival. The well-designed space has a collection of beautiful functional rooms that facilitate the needs of the children and where the care and therapy take place including respiratory therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational

therapy. In the kitchen breakfast, lunch, and snacks are prepared by nursing personnel and some foods require texture modification. To make these delightful rooms possible, equipment and supplies are needed. Some immediate needs are electronic blood pressure machines, pulse oximeters, no touch thermometers, and electric weight stand up and baby scales. Beyond medical supplies, we also need items such as play mats, baby gate play yards and electric swings. Anything used at home is what Patches needs. PATCHES provides a safe, nurturing, home like place for children to thrive physically, socially and developmentally. The loving care being provided gives the families much needed support, allowing parents to go to work or school with less worry and giving the whole family a less stressful and stable home environment. Parents are able to have peace of mind. Beyond receiving specialty medical treatments, older children receiving therapy might be able to return to public school and lead a normal life. With the ability to interact with each other, children enjoy the socialization they get at PATCHES as an alternative to having nursing at home. ngelia Stokes welcomes visitors and encourages you to come and see where your donations go. If you are interested in touring the facility, please contact PATCHES. The staff gives excellent care, and the children here are loved. Relationships are established and bonds are built. “When you look at the medical conditions these young children are faced with daily, yet they’re still laughing and smiling, it puts life in another perspective”. The children here are just incredible. We are very honored to be a part of their lives!
Supplies Needed: Diapers, wipes, bibs, high chairs, twin sheets, reusable bed pads, mattress pads, crib sheets, pillows, pillowcases, Kleenex tissues, etc. Toys: Children always need toys! Motivational and educational toys and musical toys especially provide music therapy for children. In addition, we are in need of play mats, baby gate play yards, electric swings, etc.
How To Make Donations: You can purchase an item or bring it in. Monetary donations are always welcomed. You will receive a receipt for tax purposes. Angelia emphasizes: “Any amount anyone is capable of giving is greatly appreciated.

VISION
2020 Vision. A single word. A word with many meanings and a word with many applications.
LYNNE C. ERBE, O.D.
V
ision is commonly considered one of the five senses and the ability to process the world around us. For most of us it means eyesight. However vision can also be described as something seen in a dream or the power of imagination or a clear idea about a future plan of action. Vision can also be used to describe something of beauty. Ultimately, Vision is a multitasker. Year 2020 is an especially pertinent year for me as an eye doctor. The American Optometric Association has dubbed it the year of the comprehensive eye examination. It’s been my pleasure to write about this in previous articles and an opportunity for me to discuss more topics throughout the year. My “Vision” is to continue keeping you informed with eye related observances, special events, fun facts or maybe a joke or two. 2020 is also a new beginning for my practice. I’m proud to announce I will be moving to a new location! The facility will highlight new technology in the exam rooms and in the optical. There will be special promotions and events throughout the year. The new address is 702 SW Port St. Lucie Blvd in the Grand Oaks Square Plaza. It’s been my honor to serve this community for the past 17 years. My staff and I will continue to serve your eye care needs for many years to come. Your Vision Our Passion Together Keeping Your World in Focus.

Hibiscus Children’s Center & Behavior Basics, Inc. Welcome New Clients in SafeCare Program
S
t. Lucie County/Indian River County – Hibiscus Children’s Center was pleased to announce a new prevention program serving St. Lucie and Indian River County families earlier this year. SafeCare is a collaborative partnership between Hibiscus Children’s Center and Behavior Basics, Inc. The program, which is focused on providing parenting education through home visits, welcomes new clients and the services are free. SafeCare is funded, in part, by Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County and Communities Connected for Kids.
Some of the feedback the SafeCare Program has received from our participating parents: “Very helpful,” “I love everything about SafeCare,” “Good job Ms. Jean,” “Loved our visits, very beneficial. My child’s progress has been amazing, by continuing our child-parent interaction and using it daily. I had an amazing instructor,” “Very helpful and recommend to other parents,” and “Deidra was very informative, kind, and helpful. We learned so many helpful things.” All families are eligible for the program if they have at least one child in the home under the age of six. Changing Hearts
T
here’s no heavenly announcement. No angels with trumpets. We don’t get Facebook notices from the Holy Spirit’s page. At Christian FM we’re typically unaware of what God is actually doing through our ministry until we receive a simple message like this one: “Listening to Christian FM has caused me to begin thinking about my own spiritual needs. I know I need something I haven’t had before. I need real answers and I am realizing Jesus has those answers.” We hear this story again and again. At Christian FM, we keep it simple. Our mission is to draw people closer to Jesus Christ. We do this by offering a radio station that is engaging and fun, yet continually focuses each listener on the person of Christ. Day by day hearts are encouraged to draw closer to Jesus Christ. Perhaps there are more dramatic methods. No doubt there are higher-visibility ministries in the world. But God has given us a simple vision and a task to perform, and we do it by his Grace.

BETTER LIVING & MARKETPLACE MAGAZINE
The historian Will Durant once observed, “Caesar sought to change men by changing institutions; Jesus changed institutions by changing men.” An encounter with Jesus dramatically changed a small group of uneducated fishermen, and in less than 300 years the pagan Roman world became dominated by Christianity. When men’s hearts are changed by an encounter with Jesus Christ, it will affect everything they touch, to the ends of the earth. Want to change the world? Let’s do it the way Jesus did, by changing hearts. Our mission at Christian FM is to inspire listeners to grow closer to Christ through encouraging words and music. For our listeners and supporters, we would like to say thank you for being there for us all these years! It’s because of you that anyone can tune in to Christian FM and listen to the good news of Christ. -Jon Hamilton
